Exclusive to Spain Select, Carretas 202 is one of eight luxury two-bedroom apartments located just off of Madrid's Puerta del Sol. Spain Select Carretas puts Madrid's most important attractions within walking distance. In less than five minutes, visitors can step out of the apartment building and walk directly to the city's famous Plaza Mayor, the centrepiece of what is known as Austrian Madrid . Just beyond the Plaza, visitors can continue walking to the Royal Palace and the Cathedral of the Almudena. The Puerta del Sol is one of the most well-known and busiest places in Madrid. This famous square is where the clock hangs that rings in the N...ew Year in Spain, prompting Spaniards to eat a grape for each of the twelve chimes. Adjacent to the square is the Preciados Shopping District, which includes several buildings of an "El Corte Inglés" department store. Crowded with tourists and locals by day, the area is still lively in the evenings as there are many restaurants, cafés and bars nearby. Just a short distance away is the Plaza de Santa Ana, where there are many terraces for outdoor dining. As the geographic centre of the city, the Puerta del Sol has excellent metro and bus communications, and the Atocha train station is a 15-minute walk or just three metro stops away. Spain Select Carretas is to all effects a new building, yet it maintains a perfectly restored traditional façade. Carretas 202 is a two-bedroom apartment with high quality fittings and furnishings. It has been professionally decorated and incorporates original artwork. The living room is very bright, thanks to its two balconied windows that overlook the street below, and the light marble floors. Bold burgundy paintwork and matching decorative elements have been employed, providing a nice contrast to the light floors. The two double bedrooms are situated in the interior of the building and are very quiet. Please note that whilst the building has an elevator, there is a small staircase before you reach the lobby .

Surface Area: 70 m2. Second floor. The entrance hall leads into a living / dining area with a balcony facing out onto the street. It is furnished with a 3-seater sofa, a wooden coffee table, a shelving unit with an LCD TV, DVD player and a wooden dining table for four. Along the corridor are two double bedrooms: 1 double bedroom (queen-sized bed 1.60m x 1.90m) with fitted wardrobes and 1 twin bedroom (2 single beds 0.90m x 1.90m) without wardrobe. There is a bathroom with a walk-in shower. The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator / freezer, oven, 4-ring ceramic hob (stove), dishwasher, washing machine and a breakfast bar with two stools. There is an additional half bathroom. There is marble flooring throughout the apartment, except for the bathroom and kitchen, which are tiled.

  My husband and I rented an apartment on the second floor in this same building, also offered by Spain Select. It was decorated similarly to the photos of the third floor apartment shown here: modern, sleek design, some (fake) orchids here and there, flat screen TV, etc. We were thrilled with everything about the experience. We arrived early in the morning, and were able to call Spain Select from our cell phone once we got to Sol (the are where the apartment is) and they sent an agent to check us in almost immediately. It was a quick, easy process (we paid with credit card), and the security deposit was returned without any problems as well.
  
  The apartment itself was spotlessly clean, and in a perfect location right in the middle of Madrid. It was half a block from the Metro, although we only used it to get to/from the airport, as everything else was in walking distance (note, my husband and I enjoy walking, so anything within 2-3 miles is walkable for us): shopping, the museums, restaurants, etc.
  
  It *was* a bit loud at night, but that is to be expected in a city with nightlife like Madrid's. The building was very secure, well-lit, and well-maintained. Unfortunately, the kitchen over did not work (we wanted to make Thanksgiving pie since we're american and stayed over the Thanksgiving holiday), but the washing machine worked as did all the other fixtures in the apartment, so it was no big deal. Oh, and the shower had the most amazing water pressure I can remember experiencing basically ever. : )
  
  If you've not tried staying in an apartment, this is definitely a good place to start: quick, easy, more privacy, much more space to relax and enjoy, quieter, etc. than a hotel.

  Dear Jenny, On behalf of the entire Spain Select team, thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are thrilled that you and your husband enjoyed both the Carretas apartment and Madrid itself! We're sorry, however, to hear that you were left without Thanksgiving pie and I've just asked our maintenance staff to go over to the apartment to check it out as this is the first time we've received word that it wasn't working. Next time you join us over here (hopefully soon!), please let us know as soon as something like this occurs because our policy is to take immediate action.
