Like Chueca, La Latina is a barrio-within-a-barrio, too distinctive on its own to be absorbed by its greater area, largely the barrio of Palacio. Named for Beatriz Galindo, a 15th century-born Spanish university professor better known as "La Latina" for her impressive domination of the Latin language, the exact boundaries of the neighbourhood are a bit of a gray area and unofficial in nature, so it's best just to experiment with exploration!

Quintessentially Spanish, La Latina is most often associated with sites like the neoclassical Real Basílica de San Francisco el Grande, a Catholic temple constructed during the 18th century that is now a Spanish national monument. Plaza de la Cebada, one of the oldest squares of Madrid, and the open-air Sunday market of El Rastro, are often used as reference landmarks for the zone identified as La Latina. Plaza Mayor and Lavapiés, another barrio-within-a-barrio, are frequently recognised cut-off points.

Besides its historical atmosphere and the timeless architecture that comes along with it, nowadays La Latina is especially renowned for its excellent tapas bars. From the first night of spring to the close of autumn, when winter season begins to hamper the nocturnal scene of the neighbourhood's largely-pedestrianised plazas, Madrilenians of all different backgrounds can often be found meandering through the La Latina's zigzagging roads and alleyways, making their way from one establishment to another, ready for more snacks, drinks and lively socialising.


Despite its ancient streets, bursting with classically medieval character, La Latina has endured as one of the most dynamic and active of Madrid's communities. Its extraordinary architecture, authentic Spanish restaurants, lively taverns, and famous tapas bars have made it one of the first go-to spots for visitors of central Madrid. The quickest arrival to this must-see mini-barrio lies just outside its namesake metro station, La Latina, on Metro Madrid Line 5.
