Description from the owner

CORAZÓN DE TIZA

THE SPACE

Corazón de Tiza is a studio apartment devoted to Madrid’s Movida. Its name is inspired by a famous Spanish Top 1 song from the Radio Futura band. We are surrounded by movie posters, books and comics, photographs and original records…

The colours and the brightness give a special atmosphere to the Corazón de Tiza. When the sunlight hits the 80’s disco balls, we live an almost magical moments!

The apartment is on the first floor of a newly constructed building of the Malasañana neighbourhood. The peace one can enjoy in the studio apartment is in bright contrast with the hustle and bust...Read more

Plaza del “2 de Mayo”: here, on the 2nd of may 1808, two young captains, Luis Daoíz and Pedro Velarde fought the Napoleonic army. 172 years later, this same place was the birthplace of the trend that would place the city of Madrid in the vanguard of the musical, plastic and cinematographic arts: the “Movida”. “There were four of us”, remembers the film director Pedro Almodovar, “but we made a lot of noise”.

From a day to another, the black and white city of our childhood and youth became the city of colourful Mohawk haircuts and leather jackets customized to suit the user’s taste. An alteration. The Madrid Nouvelle Vague took shape losing its prejudices in this peaceful, almost intimate spot of Madrid, the breeding ground of the most eccentric, the most provocative projects.

Film directors and musicians, fashion designers, plastic artists and drawers, out of nowhere and for whom “there’s nowhere like away from home”, found shelter in the various bars of the area, the new temples of the hedonist gospel, nowadays the pilgrimage places for those that come from Paris or New York to “get up to date”. From those days and still up and running, one can find La Vía Láctea, founded in 1979 with the objective of bringing to Madrid the aesthetics of New York’s musical bares; and El Penta, that Antonio Vega immortalized in his song “La chica de ayer”.

Time went by and Malasaña is still encouraging this peculiar mix without any complexes between traditional and modern shops. Through its streets, the old-fashioned grocer’s shops where traditions have been kept alive for centuries stand side to side with the tattoos studios and the modern shops where the “vintage” has taken over the ancient.

Here, the new trend of “micro-theatre” blends with the old-fashioned cafés: Ruiz, the Parnasillo or Pepe Botella, in 12, San Andrés street; the café La Palma, in the street with the same name; the Comercial, in the close-by Glorieta de Bilbao, a few meters away from the old Real Hospicio del Ave María y San Fernando, nowadays a Pedro de Ribera work of art metropolitan museum.

One piece of information: in Malasaña one can find more bookshops than supermarkets, hardware stores or real estate agencies.
