Newcastle upon Tyne, UKGood location - shame about the cleanliness
Left on 09/10/2011 for a stay in November 2010
The apartment is in a good area with easy access to the Metro. The building was very quiet at night with no disturbance from neighbours or traffic. The apartment was decorated stylishly, with nice wooden floors and acres of cupboard space. The heating system worked very well.
However, on our arrival, we immediately noticed that it had not been cleaned, although the bed had been made up. A handle was hanging off one of the kitchen cupboard doors and the shower curtain was missing.
These problems were reported to Friendly Rentals and two maintenance men arrived to fix the handle, replace light bulbs and the shower curtain; but no cleaner was available.
That night, we had to use the apartment which was in a dirty state. Every surface, except for the two glass tables, was covered in dust; there were balls of dust and hair in the bedroom. The bathroom was particularly bad with evidence of hairs and toothpaste left by previous occupants. The basin and the shower were both grubby. The grouting between the floor tiles was ingrained with dirt.
The kitchen sink was not clean. Some of the forks still had egg stuck on them and there was cooked egg stuck to the counter top, and the hob was sticky. There were no wine glasses and there was a broken corkscrew. One of the drinking glasses had a sharp broken edge and another had lipstick marks on it. The cafetiere had a very bad crack, so was unusable. Obviously no one had bothered to check the inventory or cleanliness.
The black nylon rug in the living area was a haven for bits of food that had been dropped by previous occupants, and had not been vacuumed. The walls of the apartment needed attention. There were large cracks in every room, plus damp and signs of mould in the bedroom. Beside the main door to the apartment, the walls were very grubby with marks and needed fresh paint.
This was all reported to Friendly Rentals. On the second day a cleaner came while we were out. They only cleaned the basin and the sink, and folded our towels up. No attempt was made to do any other cleaning, dusting or vacuuming.
If you like to have silver balls artfully arranged in a dish and don't mind a bit of grime, then this is the place for you! However, you have to pay a cleaning fee upfront. What could this be for?
We have stayed in Spain using Friendly Rentals on two previous occasions – Barcelona and Valencia. On both occasions we had a spotlessly clean apartment and were extremely happy with all the arrangements. Friendly Rentals has expanded greatly in recent years and it would seem that this might have compromised the service they are able to offer. We will not be using them again. We stayed at Latina IV in November 2010 using Friendly Rentals. -
