Here is the first thing you need to about these condos, the furniture is hit or miss. You just have to go in eyes wide open that unless you and your wife can put up with dated furniture, dirty carpets and dated kitchens and baths, going into a condo may not be for you.
That said, We went to Makena Surf on an excellent offer, about 600 a night plus a free car rental during the time. This was a ground floor ocean front from steps from the beach. The unit in the F building -- was late century furnished and we did not want it. We worked with Customer service to find another unit. We upgraded to a similar unit in the E building which was outstanding. We paid more but it was worth it. I mean worth it. The unit was steps fromt the beach, like the F building, but the furnishing were top notch. best showers ever. great kitchen. Great bedroom and no carpets.
We never left the unit. We ate there. Spent most of our days walking from the lanai to the beach and back. read three books over 8 days. we even extended a day. Wifi was spotty even though each unit had its own 5.2 ghz wireless router. Never understood that.
Snorkeling there is outstanding. simply swim 100 yards around the corner and you will be swimming with the turtles and the beautiful fish. Boat tours come here to snorkel, so you know it is one of the better spots. it is a great sandy beach. with a wonderful all day breeze that peels the stress away layer by layer.
There is a semi nude beach a short walk away if that is your thing.
The people at Destination Hawaii Resorts: Shawn, Victoria, Velma, Roxanne, and others including the housekeeping took care of us.
Its a gated community, easy parking. Pools and barbecues are available but we never used them. And an easy drive to wailea and kihei if you want to go out for dinner. of course go to snorkel bobs to get your snorkel gear.
we are already planning our trip for next year.
Lastly note. Different companies manage different units. so beware. Destination resorts handled our trip. They have select units. We saw three. F107, E102 and B302. I would recommend all of those buildings but the furnishings in F107 are dated.

We stayed in this corner condo unit with views of Chang's beach and the southern coast of Maui. The expansive view from the balcony (glass all around) was the best part...we've never spent so much time indoors just gazing out at different times of the day or eaten so many meals at home on vacation! The great views extend into the living room and kitchen. Unfortunately that's where they end! The two bedrooms are in the back and while you can hear the ocean from there if you try...you don't have any views from there or from the bathroom. Both are not as bright in comparison. These were our least favorite parts of an otherwise remarkable condo! The place was remarkably clean and well maintained (note: they do have a 5-day minimum). One small quibble: we really missed not having an iPod player in this unit (or candles)! Although we did find a CD player...but who listens to CD these days???
