      Beautifully decorated condo, amazing view!

Left on 05/21/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We have rented many condos in Hawaii, but this one far surpassed all the others. The view/location was the initial draw, but the unit was professionally decorated and had all the comforts of home - modern kitchen, high end bedding, internet, comfortable furniture, cable TV, beach chairs, etc. The owner was extremely helpful answering questions before arrival and even supplied a very nice basket of Maui produced goods that was wonderful to enjoy! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone!

      Wonderful condo

Left on 04/18/2013 for a stay in February 2013

We stayed at this condo for 10 delightful days. The setting was perfect for our family vacation with two beaches just steps away.We snorkeled (saw lots of turtles), boogie boarded and built many sand castles right at what sometimes seemed like our own private beaches. If it isn't a day for the ocean there are two pools that can be enjoyed. The condo complex has beautiful, lush gardens that are immaculately maintained. The views from the condo are spectacular. We saw whales every day and the sunset view was great since it faces west.
The condo has everything that that you could possibly need. We had never been to condo that was so well supplied. We truly felt that we were valued guests. It is on the third floor which was not a problem for us and really made the view even better.

The owner was very easy to communicate with to make the arrangements for our visit. It is a great place inside and out. I'm glad he shares it.

      Relax in a Gorgeous Setting!

Left on 02/15/2013 for a stay in January 2012

We have been returning to this unit for years & enjoy the amenities more each visit. The unit is spacious & well appointed & the kitchen has all of the equipment that one needs to concoct delicious, fresh meals. The addition of the barbecue on the lanai is perfect! Makena Surf is a quiet & serene location but close to the hub-bub of Kihei. The two pools are gorgeous, the four tennis courts beautifully maintained, the grounds & herb gardens beautiful & lush. The beach is just outside the front door & the snorkeling & turtle viewing are spectacular. We thoroughly enjoy our visits & return home refreshed & rested.

      Feel like an owner

Left on 01/17/2013 for a stay in November 2012

We have stayed in many places in Maui but we will come back to Makena Surf F304 in the future.
This condo gives you the feel of being an owner of Maui oceanfront property. The complex is small (107 units), quiet, with a wonderful beach just steps away, closer than the walk from any Maui hotel to the beach.
The condo is immaculately maintained, not worn out or dated like most Wailea/Makena hotel rooms. Sub-zero refrigerator, granite countertops, washer/dryer, gas barbeque grill on the patio, full cable TV and Wifi, there is simply nothing here that is lacking. Tremendous value for a luxury vacation.

      Best spot on Maui

Left on 11/16/2012 for a stay in October 2012

We have stayed all over Maui over the past several years, but this is truly the best place on the island. The condo is beautifully decorated and has everything you need for an enjoyable stay. It is situated on the ocean with fantastic snorkeling right off the beach. Beautiful palm trees blow in the breeze right off the lanai. Besides the beach directly adjacent to the condo, Big Beach is right down the road. It is one of the best beaches in all Hawaii. This is our third stay and we would not consider staying anywhere else.

      Heaven on Earth

Left on 10/22/2012 for a stay in October 2012

I had been to Maui before but my two previous experiences were in the Lahaina area. Lahaina is nice but a bit too crowded and touristy for me. This time we stayed in Wailea at the Makena Surf, unit F304. This is a perfect spot for those that love the beauty and tranquility of say Kauai but want to be near lots of things to do which Maui offers. Makena Surf is a lovely secluded spot with a great beach right in front. Our unit F104 was on the top floor with breathtaking oceanfront views of the Pacific. The unit itself was highly upgraded as well. Dealing with the owner of the unit Jim was super easy and he even called us our first day to make sure everything was fine. I think he is in real estate and his personal touch service showed. We plan to rent this unit every year as an annual trip.

      Great ocean front property

Left on 10/12/2012 for a stay in August 2012

My family had a wonderful relaxing stay in spacious Makena Surf F304. It was all that we expected with respect to ocean view and proximity to a nice quiet beach with excellent snorkeling (with turtles). The lanai was our favorite spot to relax in the morning and at the end of the day. We appreciated there was a gas grill on the lanai so that we did not have to cook down by the pool. It made preparing dinners easy for the guy who need to give his wife a break. I couldn't agree more with all the positive remarks about this condo. I also agree that some of the older rattan furniture could be updated as others have commented. I take exception with negative comments about the beds which we found to be comfortable considering we appreciate a firm mattress. The property has beautiful grounds and the management team was very responsive and engaging when needed. Overall this unit offers excellent ocean front value for the price. We would stay again even if the furniture was not updated. Honestly, the furniture is really not that bad.

Best Week Ever at Makena Surf

Left on 10/04/2012 for a stay in August 2012

We had a great stay at Makena Surf F304. The space is much bigger than it looks from the pictures on the website, and the view is way better in person. We were very pleased with the rooms and the 2 bathrooms were ideal, when sharing with teenagers. The location to the beach and snorkeling was incredible- you can't get any closer. My day would start early, coffee on the lanai and watch the sun come up, and then join the snorkelers for an hour with our reptile neighbors. It is a very popular spot for snorkeling - kids and adults, because it is so easy to reach the reef from the beach. We would see 4-6 turtles every day on the reef. The water clarity is amazing. The beach is nice too for a morning swim, and in the afternoon, the waves usually come in. I like bodyboarding, but some of us don't like waves, so we swam in the morning, when it is very calm. We would go shopping from 4-6 pm when the surf came up. I think this was actually the nicest beach we went to in all of Maui. It was "our beach" and not crowded at all.

About the condo - it is very well appointed. I like the fact that they have soaps and detergent and salt and pepper - even coffee for the first morning- the Destinations Resorts people do a good job. I never had a problem cooking - the kitchen had loads of pots, pans, knives, etc. We got a load of refresher linens half way through the week, which was nice. The landscaping and gardens are very well kept. We used the pool every day, usually in the afternoon/evening. We liked the little hot tub they have too. The kids liked the pool. Most nights we liked to grill out on the lanai and eat outside and watch the sun go down. The view is really great - on a clear day you can see Molokai. But the turtles were the thing I will remember about the trip. I really can't think of a problem with this location. We all agree that the Makena Surf vacation was our best ever, and the condo was absolutely wonderful. We loved it.

      special!

Makena Surf is old Hawaii...calm, peaceful, respectful of history. A place to just "be". We have stayed several times in Jim's condo; he is the perfect host! The view is not to be believed...lots of lanai time. We have seen some amazing whale action. The remodeled kitchen and baths are nicely done. The beach and main pool are steps away. Jim provides all the amenities...umbrellas, beach chairs, mats, etc. I noticed that one guest talked about elevators! Not old style! Just rent a ground floor unit if that is an issue. Big Beach is just down the road. Several great restaurants in Wailea, minutes away, as well as shopping big and small.

      Best Location in Paradise

Left on 10/02/2012 for a stay in September 2012

As seasoned travelers to Hawaii (over 25 trips), we have found that Makena Surf F304 offers the best of all worlds and it has become our "go to" spot for rest and relaxation. Makena Surf is not part of a developed strip of hotels/resorts/condos. It is this seclusion from the hustle and bustle that keeps us coming back to this little slice of heaven.

First, the Makena Surf development is beautifully and well maintained. The pools provide plenty of sun and shade on comfortable chaise lounges. These are not resort pools; no slides, lazy rivers or other devices that encourage noise generating activities. If you're traveling with young children who like to play games in pools, this may not be the best choice. We didn't start coming to the Makena Surf until our kids were past that stage. If you want to swim laps or read around the pool this is definitely the place for you. But that assumes that you can tear yourself away from the beach, which has clean, soft sand and amazing snorkeling. The honu (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle) are frequent visitors to the beach, so you don't have to snorkel to enjoy the local wildlife. Local kayaking outfitters bring their trips to the point just beyond the condo for snorkeling. This is a five minute swim from the Makena Surf beach.
One of the "features" of the Makena Surf that we really appreciate are the tennis courts that are included in the price. On our most recent visit, we were the only ones who used the courts the entire week we were there.

F304 is directly on the ocean. Absolutely nothing comes between the lanai and the glorious Hawaii sunset. The unit has a new, well equipped kitchen and recently renovated bathrooms.

The owner, Jim, is very responsive and easy to deal with and Destination Resorts, which manages the property locally, has concierge services for anything you need during your stay.

      Would definitely stay here again.

Left on 10/02/2012 for a stay in September 2012

We booked this condo through the web site www.makenasurf.com and dealt with Jim Osgood during the booking process. Mr. Osgood was quickly responsive to my initial inquiry about availability as well as subsequent emails with questions. The rental process was easy and there was no resulting confusion or delays upon check-in. Mr. Osgood was kind enough to let us know in advance about some potential repair work to the neighboring condo scheduled for the week we were to be there and offered an opportunity to cancel our reservation.

The condo is located a bit south of a more populous area and therefore a bit quieter, which is what my wife and I were looking for. The thing that strikes you first about this unit is the incredible 180° view from the large lanai. We traveled all over Maui during our 10 day stay and saw very few views that equaled that which was available everyday from this condo. The sunsets from the lanai were particularly impressive.

This is a 3rd floor walk-up unit, so if you have ambulatory problems, you should be aware. The flights to the 3rd floor are not particularly arduous and posed no problem for us. I do believe the 3rd floor location enhances the above-mentioned view from the lanai.

The condo was nicely furnished and clean. There was a grill on the lanai as well as table and chairs for dining and a couple of lounge chairs, making the lanai the most frequented area in the condo during our stay. The kitchen was also very well appointed with new appliances and virtually everything one needed if dining in.

The beach is a short walk away with a really nice place to snorkel. Other reviews mentioned the turtles that frequent the reef that lies just in front of the F building. I saw at least one turtle on virtually every snorkeling trip I took, which was every day. During our stay, the beach was never crowded, although it did get a bit busier on the weekends.

There are numerous restaurants a short distance from the condo, including those located in resorts along the same road on which the condo is located and on S. Kihei Rd., which is maybe a 5-10 minute drive away. There are also a couple of grocery stores relatively close by. The Safeway seemed to be the largest and best stocked of the stores we saw.

There are beach chairs and an umbrella available for the unit. If I had to nitpick, I would urge an upgrade on the umbrella.

Overall, this was a very good experience and if our travels ever bring us back to Maui, we wouldn’t hesitate to book this condo again.

      Very Disappointing

Left on 09/05/2012 for a stay in August 2012

We were very excited to stay in this unit at Makena Surf but had a very disappointing experience. Our hope is to prevent other families from having a similar experience. First, the good.
      - The development is very lovely, secluded and on a gorgeous beach in Makena.
      - The owner, James Osgood, was excellent to deal with. Very prompt and courteous in dealing with a somewhat significant problem we ran into. Nothing but good to say about him personally.
      - The view is very nice, but to be honest, they are all nice in this development and this isn't any better/worse than others.
      - Kitchen and bathroom renovations are fairly recent and nicely done. Kitchen well supplied.

Now, for the bad. Not all of these are the owner's responsibility, but families should be aware.
      - Furnishings are cheap, outdated and beneath a condo that charges this much for rental. The sofa is disgusting, the beds are box springs and mattresses on wheels. Uncomfortable. Every movement is like an earthquake. Cheap polyester bedspreads from Target add to the ambiance. Update the interior with quality furnishings and decor.
      - Truly one of the most un-family-friendly developments we've encountered in Hawaii. All kidding aside, the development actually has a "No Marco Polo" rule, along with a myriad of other rules aimed at ensuring that the sound of children playing doesn't assault the gentle ears of the older visitors and residents. No float toys, no loud noises, no splashing, etc. Every day I would walk by the pool (there are two) and wonder who the rules were for exactly, as there was almost never anybody there. I understand the reasoning, but there are two pools (which, by the way, are your run-of-the-mill, medium-sized backyard pools, nothing special). Make one an adult pool and one for families, or grab some aloha and figure out that the sound of children laughing and playing is something to be enjoyed, not muffled.
      - The beach here is too rough for children under 10 to swim in if there is any surf, which there was while we were there. There is good snorkeling off the rocks, but we didn't feel safe having our kids snorkel there and went to other beaches all but one of the days we were there.
      - On third floor of a building with no elevator.
      - No fitness facility.

Overall, if you are used to staying in smallish, older vacation rentals, you will love this. However, drive through Wailea and the rest of Makena and you will see there is far better available for the same price.

Response from James Osgood - 10/04/2012

      James Osgood

      Owner

We regret that this guest did not find our condo up to their standards. For full transparency, we did have an ant problem when this guest arrived (the "significant problem" referred to above). We remedied it immediately. It can be difficult to keep ants at bay in a tropical environment but we usually do an excellent job. That said, we do have a guarantee of 100% satisfaction and stick by it. This guest had a 3 week reservation and, after only 2 nights in our unit, asked for and received a refund for the remaining nights. In the 24 years of renting our unit, we have only had to do this 3 times. I think that's a pretty good track record.

I'd also like to address a few of the other concerns mentioned above:

First, the Makena Surf complex is kid friendly, but within reason. Most of our guests appreciate the relaxing pool areas. If you're looking for a pool play-land for your children, the Grand Wailea, which is just a few minutes down the road, may be a better choice.

Second, our unit has been designed by a local interior designer to give it both a luxurious and island feel. The couch is only three months old and we are currently in the process of upgrading the bedding to hotel-style top sheets with fabric scarves. We encourage you to check out our virtual tour to get a better sense of the decor!

Magical Makena surf unit F304! Your search is over on Maui...

Left on 06/09/2011 for a stay in May 2011

I don’t know where to begin. After almost a year of research before our trip to Hawaii, I can honestly say it all paid off with the Makena Surf Unit F304. I scoured the reviews on Tripadvisor and elsewhere and was hesitant to make the reservation for fear of missing out on something better. After considering the Four Seasons and the Grand Wailea, along with numerous other condos, I’m telling you – this place is it. Look no further on Maui!!

The word spectacular does not begin to describe the ocean view here. You are right on the ocean (and I mean super close) which is exactly what we had hoped for. This particular unit is ideally situated within Makena Surf because not only is it in the best building (building F) which is closest to the ocean, but it’s also located on the third and highest level which offers the best view!! I can go on and on about the view. We relaxed many mornings and evenings on the huge lanai watching the ocean and admiring the tranquility of the beach. We loved the mornings on the lanai eating breakfast and spotting turtles in the great snorkeling site right in front of the condo and the evenings with balmy ocean breezes and the sounds of the waves crashing. This is a quiet, peaceful place and not for those looking for loud music or night life.

The unit looked brand new and was brilliantly renovated and tastefully decorated. It offers granite in the kitchen and bathrooms, stunning cabinetry, updated fixtures, eye-catching artwork and comfortable furniture and beds. The bathrooms have walk-in showers with glass doors and rainshower heads along with a hand held shower attachment (in the master bath) which short people will appreciate. The soft water was a bonus so lots of lather and good rinse ability! The king size bed in the master bedroom was like sleeping on a cloud, nice flat-screen TV’s (that we rarely watched as we couldn’t tear ourselves away from the lanai and that view), and lovely welcome fruit basket.

Right next to the unit is a short path leading down to the most pristine beach with white sand and clear, blue water with very gentle waves (if any at all). The beach is amazingly sparse with people and has the feeling of a private beach. No hoards of people here! It is paradise! The unit provides beach gear including comfy beach chairs (light and easy to carry) and a beach umbrella that came in handy. As mentioned above, a short swim from the beach takes you to the bluff in front of the condo where there is great snorkeling.

In addition to the perfect beach, there are two swimming pools. We visited the one right near unit F304 and it rarely had people in it. The pool was an adequate size and was clean and warm with a fantastic hot tub next to it. Both the pool area and the entire grounds are covered with every tropical plant and flower you can imagine. It is like your own private botanical garden that is meticulously maintained. The maturity and beauty of the gardens further enhances this already perfect oasis!

During our stay, we walked the paved beach path/walk that runs from the Polo Beach Club up past the Wailea Marriott. We walked in front of the Fairmont Kea Lani, Four Seasons, Grand Wailea Resort, Wailea Beach Villas and the Marriott and I can’t tell you how many people were jammed into this area! It was insane and the beach was packed with people at almost 6:00!! No privacy anywhere and the beaches were not nearly as nice as Makena beach. That walk confirmed that we had found the perfect spot for our stay – secluded, quiet and beautiful. I was so thankful we got it right and I’m afraid to let out the secret of this place!

Overall, this place is a solid 5 stars and we are already dreaming of a future visit. Just book it - you will not regret it!! Btw, we booked directly with Jim Osgood who is the owner and pleasant to deal with. I had broken my ankle the previous year in Hana, Maui (our first visit to Hawaii) before we could arrive at the condo and Mr. Osgood was kind enough to apply a partial credit toward this year’s visit.

Ps – We’d also recommend taking the Molokini crater snorkeling tour (Molokini Express at 6 am was awesome with no other boats in sight!) on board the Kai Kanani which departs from the beach at Makena Beach & Golf Resort. It’s just a mile away and we saw tons of fish, a few turtles (one within inches of us but you’re not allowed to touch) and even some dolphins.

The unit was beautiful and we are already talking about going back. It is close to the beach, but also we enjoyed our time on the deck sun bathing, and watching for the turtles out in the ocean.

The beach at Makena Surf is wonderful for both swimming and snorkeling in the morning, and the complex is quiet and private. This condo has a great view and all the amenities. We loved eating breakfast on the lanai after snorkeling and watching sunsets in the evening. It was so relaxing and we had a wonderful time.

      Stunning property

Left on 12/01/2009 for a stay in November 2009

Had an absolutely beautiful stay at Makena Surf. The location had lush and mature plantings and the view was exceptional. When we arrived we walked throught to the lanai and there were dolphins leaping out of the water right off the beach. What a welcome! Everything about this unit is top notch. The furniture was new and very comfortable and again that view. Wow - the pictures don't show how close the ocean is to the unit. It was great to start every morning on the lanai. Can't wait to return.

Loved the entire trip this year! Starting with the condo, spectacular views,
sunsets, didn't need to snorkel to see the turtles! Pool surrounded by Island
foliage...not condos peering down on you! Beach? What can I say, "PERFECT
for the swimmer, snorkeler, sunbather and body surfer! Did I mention each
bedroom had it's own TV? Lame I know, but relaxing after a long day in the
surf! Condo owner greeter us with a BIG beautiful basket of eats and drink!
Much appreciated after a long travel day!

In my opinion, you will not find a better place to stay in Maui than Makena Surf. Jim Osgood's fully remodeled condo offers the best of everything. If you want to be just steps from the best beach in Maui, and have awesome sunset views right from your lanai, this is the place. Jim is very accommidating and will make sure everything is in place for your stay in paradise. Aloha

      Heaven on earth!

Left on 10/30/2009 for a stay in May 2009

Staying in this condo is heaven on earth! The ocean view is spectacular and the condo is beautiful, warm and inviting. It's a top notch condo and is thoughtfully filled with everything I could possibly need or want. I especially enjoy having a washing machine and dryer in the condo so I can pack and travel light. The beach is easily accesible and snorkling with the turtles in the mornings is so thrilling! The colorful sunsets right over the ocean were an added bonus. I rate this condo a 10 out of 10! For those of you who want classy comfort and convenience while enjoying this fabulous island of Maui- this is the place to stay!

Beautiful unit at the best condos in south Maui

Left on 10/30/2009 for a stay in May 2009

We've seen and stayed in several units at the Makena Surf, and F304 was among the best. Private, nicely appointed, new kitchen and great views. The owner was a pleasure to deal with as well, I hope we will be back!

      pretty much heaven!

Left on 10/29/2009 for a stay in September 2009

Maui had never been my favorite island--until I stayed at this condo. The beach was fantastic, with snorkeling and great sand right outside the door and never more than ten people in sight (usually we had it to ourselves.) It's just an easy ten minute drive to the Shops at Wailea and some of the 5-star resorts for umbrella drinks and grand buffet breakfasts, although it was much nicer to actually stay at this fabulous condo. It was recently remodeled and everything was very comfortable. Great kitchen. Great beds. If we needed anything, we just had to look and there it was! Beautifully landscaped grounds. Easy check-in. And the view from the large lanai was the stuff of postcards. I loved this condo and can't wait to go back!

      What a great vacation experience!!

Left on 10/22/2009 for a stay in July 2009

The condo is in beautiful condition with a great view overlooking the water. The location is great for being a bit away from the busier tourist areas, yet close enough to shopping and a reasonable drive from some of the larger towns worth visiting. The complex has a comfortable feel with nice people occupying the units. At the same time, there is a great amount of privacy in the unit itself. The deck overlooks a great snorkeling site so we could scout out the turtles before heading down for a quick snorkel. We took advantage of the full kitchen on the nights that we stayed in for dinner. All in all, we had a great time in Maui and especially enjoyed these excellent accommodations in Makena!

      Paradise in Makena

Left on 10/22/2009 for a stay in April 2009

This unit at Makena surf made our visit completely enjoyable. The breath taking ocean view created a truly unique backdrop and living space. You couldn't dine any closer to the ocean than the lanai outside the living room! The upgraded ammenities suited every vacation need and the design of the condo provided a very comfortable atmosphere. We have stayed in other condos at Makena, and this was by far the most impressive. The unit is surrounded by beautiful manicured grounds and is a joyful walk away from the private sandy beach. Our trip was incredible and can't wait to return to the Makena!

      Makena Surf F304

Left on 10/22/2009 for a stay in October 2009

I can't say enough good things about our stay at Makena Surf 304—even
though I am torn in knowing that if I say too many good things, our
chances of getting desired dates next summer might be more difficult. Alas,
vacation buzz wins...so here is a review for all to see!

The location is magical and the beach is pristine, secluded, spectacular and
perfect for all ages. The condo complex has been renovated and is near
good dining and shopping, as well additional other great snorkel spots and
      surfing beaches.

The home itself is peaceful, clean, comfortable, modern, tastefully designed
      and very well-appointed.

The owner was courteous, friendly, and helpful. The resort service was on
par with an luxury condo rental.

Our favorite things about our stay:
Waking up and coming home to the spectacular view
Breakfasts and sunset dinners on the lanai
Swimming, snorkeling and evening walks on the beach
Hiding out at the pool and playing evening tennis
The spice garden next to the BBQ
      Surfing nearby at Kalama Park
Cooking after a day of snorkeling and surfing in the modern kitchen

      "Simply the Best"

Left on 10/22/2009 for a stay in April 2009

Going to Maui? Jim Osgood's Makena Surf Condo is as he claims "Simply the Best". After our first visit almost 20 years ago we tried a few other places, including upscale hotels. Believe us nothing compares to this ocean front property! The recent remodel insured this unit remains a five stars property. This is the perfect place for a honeymoon or a family vacation. Watch the whales and sun-set from the lanai or snorkel turtle town and enjoy the (almost) private beach. If you need a crowd you can walk to near-by shopping, restaurants and resort hotels in Wailea. Will we stay here again...absolutely, again and again!
