Additional Location Information
Villa Andalucia in Competa is nestled 700 metres above sea level in the Sierra Almijara, perched upon a hill side with picturesque views. A delightful medium-sized white Spanish village. It is one of Andlucia's famous white villages or Pueblo Blancos - the white washed walls reflect the beautiful summer sun, on doors, windows and walls throughout Competa town. We are 30 mins from Nerja, Torrox & Torre del Mar, 50 mins from Malaga city & airport, Granada is 1hr 30 min drive away, Seville 2hr 30 mins & Gibraltar the same. Locally there is horse riding & 80 walks available in the National Park.
Competa has 35 bars and restaurants offering excellent tapas and meals at low prices. The area of Competa has one of the best climates in Europe, and the land surrounding the village and down to the coast is filled with vineyards, olive, almond and lemon groves. The locally produced Moscatel wine is famous throughout the region. You can visit one of the bodegas and taste it yourself!
Noche del Vino is Competa's famous wine festival. It is always held on the 15th August the date never changes. It is a local celebration in Competa of the start of the crushing of the grapes season. During August you will find plenty of grapes to eat at Villa Andalucia, but we have not had chance to make our own wine yet. About midday you can see some of the locals carrying the basket of grapes on their heads and the local band playing music whilst they walk to Plaza Vendimia, where they put on a display of crushing the grapes by foot to their local songs. There is free Vino flowing all day long and also free migas (garlic and breadcrumb fried up in huge paella dish). The local children are dressed in their flamenco gear and put a show on in the same square, also one the local groups will do a few acts as well. There is also a street market where you can buy local goods.

Villa andalucia is a wonderful quiet and warm place, ideal to get away from the rush of our daily lives. Situated above the city with beautiful view on the mountains and the sea - we even saw the atlas mountains of africa once. With a nice garden to enjoy our breakfast and BBQ, a refreshing swimming pool to recover our muscles after a long walk, and a loungy terrasse to relax with a good glass of wine. Helen was very welcoming and made us feel at home, we had a good time together.

This is my 7th year visiting competa and i am always made welcome at the villa,it is clean and everything you need is there.
the location is superb as it is about 10 mins walk out of town on the side of the hill, this makes the views from the balconies spectacular, If you can't manage the hill, the taxi service is very good and Helen will help you to sort them out.this makes it a good place even if you have slight mobility problems.I love going back there as it helps me recharge my batteries.Response from Helen Hares - 08/25/2012

We had a great time in Competa in Villa andalucia. Helen and Phil were very welcoming. Having breakfast with the view over the valleys and mountains was great. Competa is a lovely village with restaurants, cafes and supermarkets. We plan to return but probably in spring or autumn (though the summer heat was bearable with the breeze) so that we can go walking in the national park. And we enjoyed the very Spanish feria/fiesta.

I can't recommend this villa and its wonderful owners highly enough. Nestled in a little corner of authentic Spain, set out on its own in a stunning mountainside location but within easy walk of an adorable little town, it really does have everything you could want for a relaxed Spanish break. Nothing is too much trouble for Phil and Helen, the owners, and their obvious pride in their home and the village becomes infectious. By the time we left, I wanted to live there too! As an English family, it was especially helpful that they took time to show us around and explain some of the local customs to us, which made us much more confident in striking out on our own and so get the most out of our holiday. The facilities are excellent, pretty much everything you could want, everything is neat and clean. We won't hesitate to make another reservation for next year.

This was definitely a holiday with a difference. Really nice hosts who did everything possible to make our stay an enjoyable one. The views are spectacular, the breakfasts great, the room spotlessly clean and the village typically Spanish with everyone friendly.
Great location (but best if you have a car) restaurants really good and well priced and although we did not take advantage of the national Park I am sure this would also add a great dimension for those who enjoy walkin
Will definitely return.

Left on 10/15/2010 for a stay in September 2010
We very much enjoyed our stay in the Orange Room at Villa andalucia which was clean, spacious & very comfortable with an en suite shower room, full sized fridge & tea & coffee making facilities. The setting is special, high in the mountains on the northern edge of Competa the villa isn't overlooked; the gardens are lovely & the views across the valley to the distant coast are stunning. We alternated time relaxing poolside with days exploring the area during our stay. Favourite places include the coast especially Puerta Banus; Marbella's old town; pretty Frigiliania near Nerja &, further away but well worth the trip, Ronda & the alhambra Palace & gardens at Granada (though Granada itself disappointing). The only reason I didn't give 5 stars to the location is because of the fear factor of the narrow, twisting, mountainside road up to Competa but that wouldn't bother most other people at all as proven by the many who return time after time to enjoy Phil & Helen's warm hospitality!

Left on 10/05/2010 for a stay in July 2010
Our arrival was a little later than expected however, the welcome was warm and inviting with a short tour of the facilities, garden and pool to get our bearings and settle us in. The views and garden were breathtaking. A full and detailed explanation of how things worked and to organise breakfast followed before we were left to unpack. The town centre is a short down hill walk where a range of restaurants, bars, shops all await exploration. The walk back to the Villa is a bit more tricky and up hill - I found flat, sensible shoes a must!
Our en suite room was air conditioned with some very thoughtful items such as cork screw, a range of tea, coffee, sugar and a supply of chilled water kept in the fridge collected from a near by spring available for our use in the room. Books and tourist information leaflets were also available in the room with an information booklet detailing services and facilities of the Villa. Our room had a private patio with very comfortable chairs and table for further R&R.; An absolute delight for a short break. -

Left on 10/04/2010 for a stay in September 2010
Villa andalucia is very comfortable and is conveniently located for the village centre's shops and restaurants. The gardens, terraces and pool add to the villa's attraction. Overall, Villa andalucia is very good value overall, but with the exchange rate, GBP to Euro, as it is, the breakfast might seem a bit dear. However, each room has at least fridge and kettle (see website for details).
Competa lies at the top of a valley, and many of its streets are very steep or have steps. There is good walking in the nearby National Park: the friendly owners are knowledgeable about the area and can supply maps and leaflets. A car is useful but not absolutely essential. -

Left on 02/11/2010 for a stay in May 2009
I stayed at Villa Andalucia for a week and had such a wonderful time.
The journey from Malaga airport was very easy and straight forward as Phil and Helen gave me very clear instructions on how to get there.
The Villa is situated on a nice quiet road up above the town, so you don't really have any problems with any traffic at all. And it is easily accessable if your circle the town, avoiding the centre altogether.
My room was extremely spacous and had everything I might need in it. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful in everyway possible. I was really made to feel welcome the whole time I was there.
The views from the Villa down to the coast are stunning and the walks in the area around the Villa are lovely. You have your own little private seating area outside your room where you can take in the view and enjoy the beauty of the place.
The local town, Competa, is just a short walk from the Villa and there are plenty of great places to eat there, or you can just sit in the square, eating ice cream or drinking a glass of wine or a cup of coffee and watch the local world go by. The town is not spoilt by being "touristy", it is still a working Spanish town. It is worth being with the owners down in the town to get the friendly flavour of the place, as they are well known to the locals and take part in every thing that goes on there.
There are plenty of really nice places to drive out to for the day if you rent a car at the airport as I did.
I also played on one of the golf courses down on the coast with Phil, one of the owners, and had a really nice game. It is worth taking your golf clubs.
I would recommend the Villa to anybody, I think you will really enjoy yourselves there, as I did.
Happy Holidaying!!!! -

Left on 02/11/2010 for a stay in August 2009
The Villa Andalucia was just great. it's clean, they got a pool, a barbeque, a nice lawn and everything and it looks like you would normally pay a whole lotta money for such a guesthouse to stay, but actually it was really really cheap. The landscape is beautiful and phil and helen are very nice and freandly persons. Just the little village named Competa is somewhat strange, it seems that only tourists are living there for some reason. And well, it's a small village, so you can't expect anything spectacular there. It's just pretty far away from everything. So, it's nice and quite if you just want to relax, but if you're young and active you probably will get bored after a few days. All in all - I highly recommend the Villa Andalucia.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Andalucia :-
1) Accomodation was clean, comfortable, with a lovely pool and garden to relax in and we enjoyed lazy afternoons around the pool with the dog!
2) Our hosts were very welcoming and informative
3) The area is great for walking and we really enjoyed being in a traditional spanish village rather than in a tourist resort
4) There were plenty of good restuarants within walking distance
5) Would love to explore the area further and have no hesitation in recommending Villa Andalucia -

We could fill this page and several others. We have stayed twice at the Villa, [ 2008 & 2009 ]on the first occasion as we left my Wife said to me we ' have to come back here', she has never as far as I can recall ever said that before and we have visited many Countries. The Villa is superb, and the views stunning. Competa is a lovely village, with superb bars, restaurants, and a very genuine friendly population. Phil and Helen treat you more like friends than visitors, and Helen's Aunt Pauline and her husband Peter who live next door are a very nice couple, we spent many hours sitting on the patio drinking wine, and eating nibbles and chatting until the early hours !.
To sum up in one word, ' SUPERB '

I stayed at Villa Aandalucia last spring. It is very comfortable and Helen & Phil
are very friendly and help-full. great breakfast just right for walking. The
rooms are decorated in the Spanish style and very tastefully furnished, the
fridge ideal for the mountain water & the BEER. It was very pleasant to come
back after a days walking and sit on the terrace watching the sunset and the
fabulous view with a cold beer or 3. Its ideally placed for walking in the
mountains or just taking in a typical Moorish village with loads of history.
Competa is a friendly village that welcomes visitors with bars & restaurants
that serve good spanish food & wine. -

This was the second time that we had visited Villa Andalucia. The first was the most enjoyable holiday that we had had in a very long time and had to book immediately for the following year which was equally as good. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome and at home by Helen and Phil. The rooms were lovely and very clean, as was the whole villa. It is so relaxing and the views are spectacular. The Spanish people in the village are very friendly but if you want a bit more bustle then there is a very good bus service into busier towns. We enjoyed one or two barbecues at the villa with Helen, Phil and Jake and this was very enjoyable. The food is fantastic, the company brillant and the music superb. We will certainly be going again. Thanks for a fantastic holiday and making us feel so welcome, like one of the family.

We have stayed many times at Villa Andalucia, twice a year for several years - sometimes two weeks and sometimes three. We have always found the same care and response to our needs. The villa's situation is very convenient for local walks and many restaurants where excellent and reasonably priced food is served. The views from the villa are spectacular and it is very centrally placed for visiting other places by bus or car. We really cannot recommend it highly enough and shall certainly continue to make our regular visits there.

Our fourth stay in Competa. We love this typical spanish village, quiet but there is plenty to do. Sept 09 we stayed at Villa Andalucia - Helen and Phil gave the best hospitality, gave us some great information about the local area and places to visit. The garden and pool area were a great place to relax and unwind after days out site seeing or walking. Helen and Phil will invite guests to any BBQs they hold; during our stay we had fabulous food at their BBQ as good if not better than any of the top class restaurants in the village. We will definately be staying in Competa again and nowhere else will do - it will always have to be Villa Andalucia - the next time we will visit will be when one of the many festivals are on in the village - VILLA ANDALUCIA - "A LITTLE GEM"
