Description from the owner
The Casa de Luz is an extraordinary five bedroom holiday home overlooking the Andalucian village of Almachar.
This traditional Spanish house has been beautifully renovated in the Moorish style. The accommodation is built on three floors around a central atrium, lit naturally through a translucent roof. A spacious upper lounge leads to a large terrace with breathtaking views. In the foreground orchards of mango avocado and muscatel grape with orange and lemon groves. In the distance the Sierra Tejeda mountain range dominated by the majestic Mt. Maroma.

FranceA truly authentic andalusian experience
Left on 01/19/2012 for a stay in July 2011
This is a spacious traditional house in a very authentic white andalusian village. Don't expect to find a lot of activities for tourists, but the local people are friendly, when you can decipher their accent :) The village has plenty of bars, and shops where you can get basic supplies. It also has an open air municipal swimming pool open daily from mid-June onwards. Malaga is about a hour's drive away (along a very windy road!). Other beach resorts such as Nerja (our favourite) are 40 mins' drive. If you want a beach holiday, Almachar is not a good choice, but we liked being away from the touristy areas on the coast.
Note, this location is not suitable for anyone with difficulty walking or climbing! The streets in the village are narrow and very steep, the house is not accessible directly by car, and parking in the village itself is limited. We found it easiest to park on the edge of the village and walk (the wheeled shopping trolley supplied in the house was in constant use!).
The house is not luxurious, but it's comfortable, attractively furnished in andalusian style, and equipped with everything you'd need for a holiday. It could do with a couple of comfortable armchairs in the living area though.
When we were there the weather was very hot -- about 35-38C every day. The bulk of the house remained cool without any need for air conditioning, and we slept comfortably in the first floor bedrooms with the windows open. Fans are provided but we didn't use them all that much. The top floor, directly under the roof, did get unbearably hot during the day, but we didn't really use it -- except to access the lovely roof terrace with its fabulous view.
I'd recommend this to anyone who wants an off-the-beaten-track andalusian holiday. Ability to speak at least basic Spanish is highly recommended!

LondonFantastic location, ideal for exploring historic andalusia
Left on 10/16/2011 for a stay in September 2011
Casa de Luz is nestled in a traditional Spanish village where the locals were very friendly and patient with our basic spanish. The village has a good supply of shops, bars, fiesta's and cultural events e.g. Local Flamenco association. But, remember if travelling on a Saturday the food shops are closed from midday onwards until Monday. The Casa is ideally situated for Granada and the La alhambra, Cordoba with its Mezquita and Ronda with its bullring and gorge. The Casa was versatile and spacious for our party of 7 and the views from the terrace over the mountains were stunning.
We frequented the cove beach at Moro about 40 minutes drive from the Casa, just passed Nerja which was fantastic for both snorkelling and swimming.
If you enjoy fishing then Torre del Mar is a great place to fish after dark for sardines and bass.
We had a great time and thanks to Judy and John for their warm welcome and summary of local information on arrival. This was a great holiday which we all enjoyed and the Casa was an excellent base to explore the area.

The Casa was everything and more we were looking for. As a parent I wanted my children to experience a different world to ours and this was that and more. The people in the village were lovely and very welcoming. We had a great time, the house had all we needed. The parking was a concern but we learned to go everywhere on foot. This again allowed us to experience the village's way of life. The wecoming meal was great as there were foods we had never tried before. All the bedrooms were comfortable and the kitchen was very easy to work in. The fireplace was an added bonus. We came back to australia from our holiday and immediately enrolled in a Spanish course to work on our language skills for our next visit. What a life changing experience.!

Niamey, NigerA gorgeous village retreat!
Left on 01/17/2011 for a stay in December 2010
We were looking for a place to start our Spain trip where we would have a week of quiet and peace in a beautiful rural surrounding. With hectic lives we wanted something out of the city to help us slow down and enjoy the family with no distractions! This house was beautiful and perfect for a family! Comfortable beds, well stocked kitchen, sitting room with tv etc and everything you could need. We really enjoyed spending time walking through this village and other ones nearby and checking out the tiny restaurants and cafes. Our kids loved they could run up and down the cobblestone streets. We also went into Malaga when we wanted some serious shopping since it was only 30 minutes away (on a windy windy road!). A great mix of village living with city access. I would highly recommend this to anyhow who is looking for a house in this area! Many thanks to John and Judy!

JohannesburgFantastic house for a family reunion and a holiday
Left on 11/18/2010 for a stay in November 2010
Casa de Luz is as good as the website claims it to be. We were a party of 10 - 2 seniors, 2 couples with 4 kids between us, aged between 2 and 7. The house is huge and more than spacious enough for such a big group. It has beautiful views over the village and mountains. We liked that it was in a non-touristy village. We got to practice our Spanish! The locals were helpful, and even though the village is small, there is plenty of variety in the shops and there are a number of pubs and restaurants. In fact, we had our best meal at a local pub - Bar Lopez. Try the paella they do on a Friday. Delicious and very, very inexpensive. The village is quite central if you want to explore the region. We did day trips to Cordoba, Granada, Malaga, the beaches. If we had been there for longer, we would have gone to Seville. John and Judy's service was excellent. They helped us out when the airline lost our luggage, and also when one of our party needed a doctor. There is only one downside to the house and that is the railings around the stairs and corridors overlooking the central atrium are not very safe for young children. Our 2 year old spent the first day trying to climb under them. Luckily, the novelty wore off. John and Judy do say that the house is not expressly designed for young children. But that aside, it is well equipped for kids with Dvds, videos, toys, books. All in all, a fantastic house and location for a family get-together.

Thanks Michele for your lovely review. We do warn guests about the rails, and also provide a stair gate so that toddlers can remain safe under supervision on the ground floor.

My mother and I spent 9 days in Southern Spain and decided to base our selves in the centre of all the major places to visit. We were so happy to stay at Casa de Luz it was just beautiful, such a great retreat after gorgeous daily drives. Our exceptionally friendly host John took us on a tour of the house, and described the area perfectly - an easy transition in to village life :) Mum and I agree that the best parts of the house were the incredibly comfortable beds and the top terrace - the views are totally magical.

This was a great spot for our hiking group. We had plenty of accomodation for everyone and we enjoyed having a couple of cook-ins with everyone helping out in the kitchen and then relaxing in the lounge watching a movie. The village is really charming and unspoilt and the locals very friendly and helpful.

From booking to departure, John and Judy offer a service which is second to none. All the right information is provided to ensure a comfortable stay in their wonderful house. It also ensured easy access to a range of things to do in the local area. The house easily accommodated our party of eight. Bedrooms are comfortable and the lounge/kitchen areas are very attractive. The view from the rooftop terrace is simply stunning. We particularly appreciated the wood burning stove during some unusually chilly weather in January. The village is within easy reach of Malaga, Nerja and Granada. The local village is a delight and the "menu del deia" at the Cafe Lopez well worth trying. A number of shops are available selling basic provisions and if required there is a Hypermarket within several miles. There is nothing to dislike about the House or its location. We would heartily recommend a stay at this beautiful house at any time of the year.

Left on 01/05/2010 for a stay in October 2009
My husband, my nine year old son and myself chose this peaceful yet incredibly central little place for our autumn break last yr.Arriving through an authentic and oh so charming village, we found the place easily, and found ourselves in the good and capeable hands of mr and mrs Perry. The two room casita gave us plenty of room - we could easily have brought a guest with us. The view is indescribeable, and the information and service from the Perrys had everything we needed.
We spent a week doing a mix of lazy days on the beach, seeing incredible old Moorish sights (dont miss the Alhambra) and retiring to the peace of the pueblo in the evening. The best way to see the region if you ask me!! -

Our party of six stayed at Casa de Luz prior to catching our trans-Atlantic cruise. The drive from Malaga to the home took us along winding roads through very picturesque countryside and Almachar built on the side of a mountain, was full of character, charm and hospitality. We enjoyed cooking our breakfasts and dinners in the modern kitchen and it was great to sit around the dining room table reminiscing about our day trips. Happy Hours on the rooftop balcony were an added bonus. Accommodation was clean, comfortable and the perfect area to use as a base. Have recommended Casa de Luz to friends and hope to have the opportunity to visit there again.

Papa Westray, OrkneyJohn and Jude's gem in the heart of the Axarquia. Fantastic!
Left on 01/01/2010 for a stay in September 2009
John & Jude welcomed us with extraordinary warmth and hospitality. After acquainting us with the layout of the many bedrooms, bathrooms, Andalusian kitchen and stunning roof terrace, we were left with local wine and an array of fruits from their own nearby orchards. The many rooms radiate off a broad, open central light well where bright light penetrates right to the base of its Moorish style support columns. This makes the house very light but without the usual associated heat. It is an easy, short walk from the church square where we were usually able to park our car. Casa de Luz is spacious, well thought out and really charmingly furnished with traditional and contemporary perfectly juxtaposed. The kitchen is really well equipped and a joy to use. Our group of eight were all able to sit very comfortably round the chunky dining table where the open plan of the kitchen and dining rooms made cooking and eating a very convivial experience. Likewise, the roof terrace is equipped with a large table, plenty of seating and a very good barbeque for long, lazy lunches. The house is located about halfway up the village hillside of charming labyrinthal streets, giving it fantastic views across the 'campo' to 'la Maroma', the largest mountain in the 'Sierra Tejeda', which one is inevitably tempted to visit (a very easy drive with car access well up onto the mountain and a further easy walk into superb scenery). The village is great fun to explore with little shops suddenly appearing where you'd least expect them. There are quite a few bar/restaurants, all at their most vibrant at midday when the often sumptuous 'menu del dia' can be sampled.(Find out which day 'paella' is on at Bar Lopez near the top square, it's fantastic!) We ventured by car and on foot to nearby villages, all with their own distinct characters and charms. Malaga, a very interesting city, is an easy drive for a day of culture and retail therapy.
Our only bad experience was having to leave Casa de Luz. -

Left on 09/03/2009 for a stay in July 2009
Communication with the owner by E-mail was excellent. We were given helpful information in advance and had a warm welcome at Almà char.
We loved the Casas' authentic style, the whitewashed walls, beautiful furniture and tiles and the spectacular view over the village and mountains.
The lovely "white village" is situated far-off the big hotels and is a perfect place-to-stay for independent travellers. Plus it's a good starting point for trips around Andalusia (Malaga, Granada, Ronda, Tarifa etc.)
Next time we won't travel in July/August again. Temperatures around 40 degrees celsius were just a little too hot ;-) -

We spent in Almachar in Casa de Luz with our big family fantastic time in the turn of June and July 2008, feeling hospitality, professionalism, kindness and ( last but not least) good taste with everything concerning interiors, advises in complex provided guides and discreetness in service. If you need open-eyed but cultural and unimposing assistance, you are in good hands. Really, we took a certain risk former year to come to Almachar with four kids and two seniors, but now we are looking forward to be there again this year.
We found there what we wanted: silence, authenticity of environment , nearness of tourist attractions (see) but distance from crowd. That is why we can wish all of you to follow our steps at John?s and Judy?s place. All what you find on vivasiesta.com webpage is real.

Casa de Luz is a lovely, tastefully modernised large town house with a front patio and roof terrace. The house is perfect for a large family or group of friends and very comfortable. Situated in a typical 'white village', Almachar has a variety of bars and shops and is a bustling with local life with no hint of tourism to spoil it. The house is in a quiet area but perfect for exploring the village and surrounding areas. It is only a short drive from the coast and Malaga, which has a lovely old city centre and port full of excellent restaurants and cultural centres. The surrounding countryside is spectacular. We have stayed at Casa de Luz on a number of occasions - I can't wait to return!

Five of us, two couples and a grandaughter, enjoyed our stay very much. The house is comfortable and well furnished. The village and villagers are charming. Left on 05/07/2009 for a stay in December 2008
We have stayed at the Casa de Luz in the beautiful white mountain village of Almachar both in June and in December and have had a brilliant time there summer and winter alike. The house is beautifully fitted out in true Andalucian fashion, with all mod cons - it is perfect. It is peaceful and the views from the house are stunning. There are many picturesque and scenic walks in the surrounding hills and if you don't feel like cooking that day, there is a wonderful authentic family run bar/restaurant in the village serving a 3 course meal of amazing value, cooked by the owners using fresh local produce delivered on a daily basis. There are small supermarkets in the village for provisions and the Almachar folk are friendly and helpful. It is only a half hour drive to the beautiful artistic city of Malaga, and other places like Granada, Antequera,Nerja and Maro are equally easy to drive to for a day in another Andalucian city or a day by the sea.
The owners of the house are extremely kind and helpful and very knowledgeable with regard to the local area. We'd definitely recommend this house - it would be suitable for almost any small group of people - the house is large enough to guarantee privacy if needed and great for gatherings around the dinner table either inside or up on the large roof terrace, where you can sunbathe, barbecue or lie in the shade and read. A great centre for a relaxing and varied holiday. Go there!
