Left on 11/08/2012 for a stay in October 2012
We stayed 6 days after visitng Venice and Rome. The owner met us just beyond train station and walked us up to the apt. It was a very relaxing stay because of location, site, and sights. Upstairs apt shower is a corner shower that was unique. Three patios for the upstairs apt. Long walk up a ramp street or straight down lots of stairs around houses. Lots of places to eat and everyplace served great meals. Easy to use train or boat to visit other villages. The view was the very best and we left the door open all night to hear the sounds of the sea. Very clean and well equiped kitchen. Lower trails were still closed from slides, so we hiked the upper trails through vineyards and hills.

We stayed in both of the apartments at Casa Baluardo for only two short nights for our friends 50th birthday - a perfect place for two couples and the most beautiful views and sunsets you can imagine. Excellent hospitality, fantastic location and all the amenities you need. The three ocean view patios made this the perfect place for a nice glass of wine and relaxing conversation with our best friends. We will be back.

My wife and I stayed in the lower unit and my brother stayed in the upper apartment. Our unit was very clean. Bed very comfortable. Loved the patio and view out over the sea. Owner was waiting for us at the tunnel end to escort us up the steep and heart pumping street to the apartment. It is well woth the effort. We are 65 and in good shape so it was no problem. Arbaspaa was wonderful and very responsive to my numerous previsit questions about the area. They have a new internet point in town which was nice to use to stay in touch with family. The only suggestion I would have for any change would be a coffee pot that holds more than two cups at a time!

We really enjoyed our stay in Casa Baluardo (upstairs). The unit was clean and the views are spectacular. We would definitely stay again. This unit is perfect for a couple. I would not want to try to fit more than 2 although there is a day bed along with the double. Ms. Bonfiglio was great to work with and keeps the place spotless and in good repair. The only aspect of the place that is kind of weird is the tub/shower; never seen one like it before and it was a bit challenging. It's definitely a space saver! One other thing to consider. This place is up quite a few stairs, so you'll get in shape coming and going. It's worth it because that's what creates the wonderful views. It literally sits on a cliff above the bay at Manarola. Of all the Cinque Terre villages (we visited them all), we both thought Manarola was the best. Don't miss the hill hike from Manarola to Corniglia! It's steep but you'll feel like you're in the Sound of Music!

My husband and I traveled to Cinque Terre in September and planned it so that it fit between Florence and Rome. Cinque was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Making reservations with arbaspaa was flaweless. Manarola in our opinion is the ideal town to be in of the 5. the apt location was perfect. Right off the main street, just a few minutes, and only 25-30 steps. Much better than most of the other locations in terms of # of stairs, and the view was perfect. Right over the swim hole, view of the ocean, and amazing sunsets.

Left on 09/18/2012 for a stay in August 2012
The apartment is small but well contained and had all that we needed for the 8 nights. Checking is was very smooth, although be prepared for the stairs! We stayed in august and it was very hot (35 degrees most days), so only having a fan was pretty hot some nights.
It has magnificent views down to the water and a lovely little back deck to relax on.
The owner also left a complimentary bottle of wine, which was a lovely thought. -

Like other reviews, this one gave me a little bit of the willies in terms of booking, calling and meeting up with the proprietor of the hotel. This was the first time my wife or I had been to Cinque Terre so we had not a clue on how things work. But Emanuela, the owner, is great and the property is beautiful and sublime.
There are two units, the 1 and 2. 1 is the first floor and the one we had. 2 is the 2nd floor and potentially more expensive. If given the choice, I would have preferred the second floor but it wasn't available for the dates I needed.
Anyway, either one is amazing for the view. Straight out into the Ligurian Sea and you are literally part of the view if looking at Manarola from the water.
The actual room is a kitchen and eating area and a bedroom. The kitchen has a small fridge, all the utensils, glasses and plates you would need, and the bedroom was small, but clean and comfortable. One point - the bedroom in Baluardo 1 has no window to look outside from. So if you have an issue with this, you might want to look upstairs or elsewhere.
As for the logistics - its as intuitive as you could imagine. You get off the train in Manarola, walk through a tunnel for 2 minutes and when you emerge on the other side, Emanuela is waiting for you at a restaurant. No steps yet.
However, then you walk up a hill and down the hill (no steps yet) and through a quaint quintessentially Italian town, and to the first set of steps. Her son helped us with one of our bags and she offered to take my wifes bag. About 30 steps up and later we were at the front door.
Emanuela is very kind and lives in the "neighborhood", about 10-15 steps down toward ths street. For a stay of 2-3 days, this is a great place. But its an apartment so don't expect room service, your bed to be made every day and wifi is not available here. (wifi not being available was great. You're on vacation. Enjoy the view with a glass of Cinque Terre wine and leave the world at the train station)
The pictures represented on the site are accurate and mine would offer no benefit as the view is the same. We enjoyed the stay immensely. -

Our family of 4 (two teens) stayed in Casa Baluardo 1&2. The accomadations were modern, clean and better than I had anticipated. I was hesitant about the check-in process (not having an actual address & having to meet someone outside the train station who would escort us to the unit), but it was simple, worked well and helped provide local village culture. Property management was accomadating and professional throughout the rental process. After visiting all 5 villages, Manarola remains our choice for housing in Cinque Terre. We consolidated luggage and checked bags at the Pisa Centrale train station which I recommend considering the stairs required to access this property, however, so well worth it! This is the property for beautiful, private oceanfront balconies.

Wonderful stay in this apartment; it was spotlessly clean, very, very quiet, and had amazing views from its two balconies (both private). We would absolutely stay in this exact apartment again and highly recommend it...the bed was a queen and comfortable, the kitchen was fully equipped, and there was a clothesline and clothespins for laundry. I would only caution anyone who has problems walking up stairs that it is a long way up from the main street in Manarola to the apartment (but, that is why the views are so spectacular and it is so quiet here). We are not in bad shape but not athletes either, and we had no problems with the walk up. You will not regret this apartment stay! We had three nights and it was a perfect amount of time for Manarola (which is a fantastic little village, everyone is friendly, the food was the best we had in all of Italy, and everything is extremely affordable).

People very friendly and very helpful. Centrally located to restaurants etc. Apartment clean and comfortable with great balconies to enjoy the wonderful views. The shower pressure in 2nd apartment could be better. Plenty of room. Just lovely and relaxing. Stairs a problem if you are not fairly fit. Because there are quite a few.

We stayed 4 days in this apartment, thoroughly enjoyed it, the stairs weren't too demanding in comparison to some plces we stayed in Italy, the view was spectacular and it was windy when we were there (no ferries) and the waves crashing over the breakwater were awesome. We were in the upper apartment with the 3 private decks, and as has been mentioned previously, the shower lacks power somewhat and was very difficult to regulate, however that's our only complaint. Check in was simple, we were met at the train station, and when we went out in the afternoon, we came back to find a bottle of the local wine had been provided for us. All in all a great stay

Casa Baluardo was a dream-come-true. We wanted a Cinqua Terra experience with open-sea views, privacy, room to unpack and stretch out all while being close to the town amenities. And this (second floor) apartment was all of that and more. Sure, there were a few steps to get there, but that justified our extensive eating! And the bathroom was a little tight, but in return we had three large balconies overlooking the crashing mediterranean. The kitchen accommodated our coffee and breakfast needs and the bed was as comfortable as at home. Meeting our representative at the train station (at 8pm!) was flawless and she was most accommodating. We have absolutely nothing to complain about. It was perfect.

I stayed in the gourd floor apartment...as per other reviews, it is simple, but had everything i wanted...a kitchen, a clean and comfortable bathroom and bedroom and an amazing view...the view makes it all worth it...all zillion steps you have to lug your case up!! I would very much recommend this place..i looked at lots of others that were more designer and more funky, but you spend so little time inside, that the view is all i needed really at the end of the day. Kitchen well kitted out, bathroom good with a hairdryer, just no oven, washing machine or iron. Lovely owner who was super helpful when we had a huge storm and the power went out for hours! Great value. The company you book through is ok, but not super helpful.

The view is spectacular!!
The accommodations themselves are rustic but Cinque Terre isn't about glamour and luxury. We had the upstairs apartment which had a small but clean bathroom -- we would have preferred more water pressure but that wasn't that big of an issue. The kitchen was functional and the bed was comfortable. What else could one want?
We had *three* balconies/patios, one with seating and a table -- all had amazing views! We had supper while the sun set on the sea (the co-op grocery store in town has fresh pesto and walnut sauce, fresh pasta, fruits, veggies and wine.) We could hear the waves crashing below from kitchen and bedroom.
We ignored the tiny ants and house flies, which seem to be everywhere in Cinque Terre, and had the most marvelous time here with daily swims after days of hiking and exploring the region. We would definitely use this apartment again -- it was in town but far away enough to be very quiet. -

Are you looking for an all inclusive five star level hotel accomodation? Keep looking...
Are you looking for a simple but fully functional and clean apartment with the best possible view? Look no further!
I have stayed in many places throughout the years, and this apartment is on the top of the list when it comes to view. Simple perfect 180 degree view of the ocean.
Kitchen adequately, but simply, equipped. Bedroom likewise. Bathroom clean but small.
To get here you need to climb stairs. But, the more you climb the better the view, so why complain? Lifts can be found in other cities. -

We recently spent 12 days in Italy, our first trip to Europe. While we loved Florence and Rome, the Cinque Terre was clearly our favorite! Upon arriving in Manarola at almost 6 p.m., we expected difficulty because we had been unable to reach our landlord by phone (she had needed to leave town for a medical appointment). But the arbaspaa office was still open and the staff were welcoming and extremely helpful. We were guided to our apartments and able to settle in immediately. We hiked the trails, reveled in the wonderful local food (fresh and in the restaurants) and enjoyed terrific views of the Mediterranean every moment we were in the apartments! Thank you for helping us to have a very memorable visit!

We stayed three nights at Baluardo 1, the lower of two apartments in Manarola while we explored the beautiful Cinque Terre area. Perched on the cliff high above the adriatic Sea, the view along the coast is breath-taking and the sunsets stunning. The downstairs apartment is small but perfectly comfortable and adequate for us as a couple who wanted an authentic Cinque Terre experience, not a tourist hotel. We made contact with Emanuela by phone and she met us at the restaurant just out of the train station. She took us to the apartment which is a bit of a climb up a narrow winding path and steps but that's the nature of the Cinque Terre villages. They are built on steep hillsides and cliffs which is why they are so unique and picturesque. The bedroom was a wee bit dark because it has no windows but we were hardly in the apartment at all, except to sleep and shower. We ate at the quaint little restaurants in the village and spent our days exploring the incredibly scenic world-famed Cinque Terre walkway. At the end of each day we came home to a glass of local wine, cheese and nibbles on the gorgeous sun-drenched balcony, watching the boats and swimmers below, bathed in the golden glow of the sun going down over the distant horizon. A truly memorable experience - exactly what we were looking for. Thank-you Emanuela.

Initial access a bit difficult with two nonfunctioning telephone numbers, but after that everything was wonderful. Well furnished apartment with amazing views of Cinque Terre and Manarola harbor. Wonderful terrace for sitting and watching the morning light with expresso and evening sunsets with wine. Quiet and away from the bustle of the center of town, making it well worth the climb. Manarola is a great location from which to explore Cinque Terre and this apartment is an outstanding place to rest after your adventures.

We were very happy with our stay in Il Baluardo I & II. There were five of us in our group and we were able to all be together in the same building, yet enjoy separate sleeping quarters and bathrooms. Our apartment on the lower level had a lovely terrace from which we enjoyed many hours of sitting, enjoying a wine and the view. The apartment consisted of a small entry area, a nice sized kitchen, a sufficient bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs was for the family of three and they had a larger bedroom with a third bed in it. We congregated downstairs because our kitchen was larger.
Check in was a bit stressful until things got ironed out. Our contact number had changed but we were not notified of that, so there we were, in the rain, trying to get through to our landlady to no avail. I managed to get in touch with the arbaspaa people (an office just above the Tabacchi) and the lovely young women there were able to get me set up. Our landlady's son came to help us with the luggage. It is quite a trek up to this apartment, but it is certainly worth the effort. I would warn anyone who has issues with stairs or hills to seek out another residence, because this one is challenging for all but the young and extremely fit. That said, my 67 year old husband managed to make it up and down those stairs, just taking his time and resting when needed. And as I said before, the view is most worth it. No matter the time of day or night, we were enchanted by the beauty of Manarola and the panorama that was laid out before us.
I heartily recommend Manarola as a destination, Arbaspaa as a rental agency and Il Baluardo as a residence. You will be entranced! -
