A three and a half storey house set in 1000 year old native trees in the scenic hill country of the northern Manawatu District. Designed in the 1970s, with brick and wood floors, a central spiral staircase, and a tiled conservatory, the Retreat is ideal as a honeymoon destination, or a quirky get-away-from-it-all holiday house for a group of friends. With a queen bedroom, a double bedroom, and 2 single beds up a vertical ladder, the open plan design is not user-friendly for young children or the very old.

The location is very private, but it is only a short walk past the pond and across the croquet lawn to enjoy a breakfast or dinner... at the Homestead, should you feel like a change from catering for yourselves.

The Retreat is 3 hours from Rotorua or Wellington, an ideal mid-way stop, and is on a scenic through route off State Highway 1. Mairenui Rural Retreat, of which the Retreat is one part of the complex, is a farmstay and fishing retreat close to one of the best flyfishing rivers in New Zealand, the Rangitikei River. Fishing guides are available on reservation. The small river flowing through the property is ideal for swimming.
