Description from the owner

We love our house and the fact that we were responsible for restoring it and also live upstairs should both be important endorsements about the quality of the building and specifically, this newly renovated apartment. The apartment has been designed to be on the ground level for two reasons: to have views of the gardens and to allow large rolling luggage to be taken directly from the sidewalk and down a short ramp and into the apartment (no stairs). We hope the photos and the written description will assist you in your decision; however, there are additional advantages to which we like to call your attention. The apartment offers Wifi service...Read more

We could not have been happier with our accommodation.

Mr Karg was helpful yet unobtrusive, a real gentleman.
Location was a safe & quiet residential area, close to public transport & food markets.
Short or long stay, value for money like this in Manhattan is rare!
It felt more like a home than a Hotel.

      Excelente!!

Left on 12/24/2012 for a stay in November 2012

Left on 10/25/2012 for a stay in October 2012

We've been in this apartment from 12 to 20 October 2012. I mean, the experience was very good. This very clean, and has everything you could possibly need. It is well connected with the subway and bus stops, in 15 minutes you are to Time Square. The area is quiet, no noise. Bill, the owner lives in the same building and will help you in anything you need. It is highly recommended, we would return to the same.

Quiet spot in a busy city

Left on 10/04/2012 for a stay in September 2012

We enjoyed the relative quiet of this studio apartment in Upper West Side, near Riverside Park and good delis for buying food. It's within walking distance of the north end of Central Park and close to the Metro station. Only basic kitchen equipment was provided and the room is too small for easy chairs but everything was clean and otherwise comfortable. Wifi was a bit erratic here as the apartment we were in is below the street, so also not suitable for people with disabilities.

      New York Birthday Trip

Left on 09/20/2012 for a stay in September 2012

I planned a trip for my grandmother and I to go to New York for our birthdays. I booked this room with Bill and I'm so glad I did. It was just enough space for the 2 of us and in a very nice location, close to the river and park. We we able to walk, catch the bus, and Subway and feel like real New Yorkers =) Our trip was sadly cut short due to a death in the family but while we were there, we had a blast.

Bill was extremely helpful and kind. Whenever we get back to NYC we will be staying in one of Bill's apartments.

      Nice area but...

Left on 09/20/2012 for a stay in August 2012

Garden View Studio was in a very nice area and close to buses and the subway. The variety of food available nearby was a bonus. The title Garden View is apt, as it is only a glimpse of the neighbour's pots through the window. We enjoyed visiting New York, however we are unlikely to stay here again. The flat was tiny and there was only the bare minimum of crockery and cutlery. The outside area was dirty and depressing, not particularly conducive to al fresco dining.

Response from William Karg - 09/28/2012

      William Karg

      Owner

As guests leave I ask them how their visit or the apartment could have been improved. In this case I must have forgotten to ask that question. I will follow the lead of these guest suggestions and increase the crockery and cutlery. I must say, however, because the limit on the apartment is two people and there is two of everything, some things may go unused. The size of the apartment is what it is. Two different gardens may be viewed from the apartment windows, hence the name "garden view”. I must say that I never intended for the back yard seating area to be cleaned and polished enough for dining; but it does give me a good idea. Unfortunately during this visit, and some others, a neighbor was doing some masonry work and some of that dust did collect on the yard furniture.

Thank you Bill for a fantastic stay in NY. The apartment was just right for our style of holidaying and we were most comfortable for the week. Your assistance and support were very much appreciated.
The transport options were superb and the Red 1 line and cathedral parkway station figured in all our day planning.
Good selection of local shops with great fresh food at good prices.
As it turned out the internet access was the best we had for the entire 4 week stay in all the places we stayed.

It was our first vacations at New York. We decided to rent this studio for our honeymoon trip and we were very pleased to meet William Karg.
When we arrived on august 2012, we reached at the rental easily and Bill was there to welcome us. We stayed 9 nights to his property and we had everything we needed. A comfort room & a king bed, an equipping kitchen, a window air-condition, a big tv, a nice bathroom with all the comforts we wanted to, an iron and ironboard and a hair-dryer e.t.c.
The rental is at a great location, near to subway station, next to few super markets and 10 mins far away from the Central Park by foot.
We really enjoyed our vacations to this studio. We have to mention that Bill was really kind, friendly and he helped us to everything we needed.
We would recommend this studio to anyone who's looking for a lovely studio, it is a good choice value for money.

      Solid Little Crash Pad

Left on 08/14/2012 for a stay in July 2012

My wife and I stayed here for 4 days in early July and were generally pleased with the apartment. The owner, Bill, lives in the same building and was there when we arrived to give us keys and a brief orientation. He made himself available for any questions that we had with the surrounding area or Manhattan in general and was pleasant to deal with. All we needed was a safe place to leave our things and to sleep at night. This unit satisfied those needs. The unit itself was smaller than I thought, smaller than an average hotel room. The kitchen had all the basic essentials but was very tight. I can't imagine doing anything other than boiling water or making toast in there, but when you're in New York how much are you really going to cook??? The fridge was new and very cold which was needed during our stay as the heat was stiffling. Speaking of stiffling, there was a small window a/C unit that kept us as cool as we desired.

The best part about this apartment is the area it's in. The building is on a quiet, tree-lined street, 2 blocks (5 mins) from the 108th street subway station, close to stores and restaurants. It's nice to be a tourist and feel like a local. Aside from my backpack and camera slung across my chest, I felt like a local for a few days which is a great way to really experience a city. If you are willing to take the subway and go without the amenities of a hotel, this is a great place to start your Manhattan adventures from .

Enjoyable stay, was sufficient for what we required/wanted

Left on 07/15/2012 for a stay in June 2012

The service by Bill was great. He was more than happy to help and give advice as needed/wanted. The room was OK, a bit smaller than we thought it would be, but it suited what we wanted and served its purposed. Location was great for us with the park and river just a few minutes one way and Broadway a few minutes the other way. The subway just 2 block up - perfect for what we required. The best was the type of house it was in, it really reminded us that we were in New York and thats what its all about. The least I guess was the size of the room - as mentioned smaller than we anticipated - but hey - it really served our purpose and we werent in it that much anyway; so not really a big deal. It was very clean and tidy and the kitchen had all that we needed, so no real issues.

Great value studio in charming neighbourhood

Left on 05/19/2012 for a stay in December 2011

I stayed here for a couple of weeks with my teenage daughter on our first visit to NYC. It provided a perfect base for us to explore the city, being close to transport including a number of bus routes which we favoured so we could see our surroundings and get our bearings. We quickly felt at home because of William's warmth and hospitality. The neighbourhood is residential and that helped us feel a little less like tourists. The studio is small but is clean and well designed, with everything we needed included. We paid less than is currently being quoted on Trip advisor and it was certainly exceptionally good value. Definitely a better option than a hotel, especially for a relatively long stay.

The apartment is located in a great neighbourhood, just a short walk to the subway with plenty of wonderful healthy food options nearby. especially bagels! It was quiet, warm and cosy. Pillow cases needed replacing as odor and no protective covers and place not very clean; 2 large towels for drying and we bought 2 hand towels. Had to pickup key at one location and then go to apartment which cost more taxi fare. Since no one was scheduled to come in, he did allow late checkout which was nice.

We stayed in this splendid apartment over Christmas and we had a wonderful time. The apartment is very comfortable and super clean with everything you need for a short city stay from laundry facilities to a bottle opener, with use of a nice little garden thrown in. The chief positives of this rental however are the location and the landlord. Between Broadway and the Hudson Park the apartment sits in a beautiful building on a street which feels uncommonly safe. William is a charming man who makes you feel welcome and well looked after. We will be staying again and have already recommended this place to friends and family planning trips to the big city.

Left on 10/19/2011 for a stay in October 2011

This place was great - location, price, apartment, landlord. Securing the space with Bill was very easy. There are lots of places out there that turn out to be scams. Bill put me at ease by sending me information on his building, business and a little bit about his family. My sis and I took a red eye flight so arrived in NYC at 9am. Bill allowed us to check in and leave our luggage while we explored the city. The location is great and felt safe. The subway station is only 2 blocks away. All conveniences were steps away - grocery stores, Rite-Aid, restaurants, bakeries, cafes, transportation. The apartment itself was perfect for two people. I liked that there was a TV in the room to catch up on world/national events and free WiFi. Overall, it was excellent. I will definitely contact Bill for my next visit to NYC since he has other units that accommodate more people.

What a great value for NY!

Left on 10/11/2011 for a stay in September 2011

Everything went smoothly with this accommodation. We arrived prior to check-in and were able to leave our luggage at the apartment while waiting for it to be ready around 3 pm. We just took the short walk to the subway and occupied ourselves with New York (the plan anyway!) for a few hours. The owner was on his way out so we walked with him toward the subway, and he directed us to a shop where we could buy umbrellas because it was raining quite a lot.

The room was big enough for two people. The bathroom is small, but it does the job. We had to carry our luggage down a flight of steps but I believe there is an easier way in from the garden for those needing an accommodation.

The location is pretty good. It is great when you consider everything within walking distance - a great bagel shop, convenience stores, grocery, little restaurants, Columbia U, etc. And the price is great for the location. It is a bit north so if you are doing a lot farther south in the city, just keep that in mind when hopping on the subway. We experienced a significant delay one night due to subway issues (obviously that is an issue with the sub, not the apartment, but just keep it in mind if you have plans or reservations dependent on a specific time).

All in all it is not a flashy place but it is comfortable enough, has everything you could need, including an informative and flexible owner, and is a great price. We recommend!

      Far away from attractions

Left on 08/03/2011 for a stay in July 2011

This was my first visit to NYC. Although the subway was just a block away, and the subway was very quick to the main attractions of Manhattan, you could not walk to any tourist attractions of Manhattan. The owner was very friendly and prompt in getting us situated upon our arrival. The cost, I am told, is much cheaper than mid-town accommodations. The room is actually in the basement. It has more amenities than I needed, e.g. microwave, fridge, etc. The a/C is a window a/C which in order to stay cool has to be on all night and it is very noisy. The sink in the bathroom is very hard to shave at as it is cramped into a corner behind the door. The neighborhood, which is near Harlem, was something I was worried about before arriving. It turned out to be a nice neighborhood, without any security issues to be concerned about, although there were bars on the windows. Actually, this gave me a better sense of security when I left many of my personal possessions in the room during my touristy meanderings during the day. Again, the owner was very accommodating and friendly.

The Studio rental at Bowview was the perfect launch point for a fabulous trip to NYC. Perfectly convenient to the Subway line, and right around the corner from a wonderful market and some great and economical eateries. Our favourite meal was at Rack and Soul, a smoker pit BBQ place on W109th and Broadway. I had an amazing fried catfish po'boy sandwich with a side of collard greens. We stayed during a bit of a heat wave and the aC, while a bit noisy, kept us plenty cool. It is a very quiet neighbourhood and combined with the sound of the aC fan we were not bothered by any street noise. We did find street parking right in front of the unit but had to use a parking garage up the street for the last day because of street cleaning. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is only a few blocks away - the largest cathedral in all of the United States. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this rental to a friend however on my next trip back to NYC I will likely stay in a different neighbourhood but only because it would be nice to have a different experience. I didn't get to see much of the lower east side and it looked interesting.

The neighborhood has everything you need from shopping to dining to entertainment, and is very safe and friendly. The subway station is a block away and Central Park is about a 10 min. walk. I highly recommend making your stay in New York at this property.
