NJWonderful Week @ RV #19
Left on 09/05/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We thoroughly enjoyed our recent week stay at Rudder Village #19 in Pirates Cove.
The house is beautiful, comfortable, clean, has big rooms, well decorated, wonderful decks (2 levels!) and views. Ac and ceiling fans kept the house cool.
Located on a lagoon, views of the sound and sunsets over the marsh were a treat. Spent many hours fishing with my family off of the dock located behind the house, catching many fish (speckled trout, puppy drums, croakers, and even a small flounder) and a few eels, and caught plenty of crabs in the traps provided and those we brought with us. Of course our children enjoyed feeding the ducks as well.
The Pirates Cove community is a great place - secure, wonderful big homes, beautifully landscaped. We took advantage of the nearby fitness center, pool and tennis courts, as well as strolled through the amazing docks that go along all of the lagoons, as well as visited the marina filled with very impressive boats. Did not make it to the restauramt or tiki bar, but hope to next visit.
So much to do at the house and in OBX we didn't get a chance to use the provided canoe, bicycles or Sony Playstation as we had anticipated! By the way, that new 42 inch tv appears much bigger than that, maybe due to the great sound system connected to it.
The house was well stocked with kitchen supplies and a starter set of some paper products - I noted this wasn't the case based on earlier reviews I read. We also enjoyed grilling on the provided Weber gas grill.
The location of the home was also terrific. Located on a cul de sac in Pirates Cove community, it was a very quiet location as it was not in the beach towns, yet 5 minutes to Manteo, Nags Head, beaches, Jeanettes Pier and some great restaurants. Short drive to Kill Devil Hills/Kitty Hawk as well as Bodie Island lighthouse, outlets, food stores, etc. Also when I looked on the map I had some concern as it was so close to the bridge coming over from Nags Head to Roanoke Island, but you are far enough away that you don't even know the highway or bridge is there. If you have your own boat, this would be an ideal location, as I suspect you could dock right near the house. Also met some very friendly neighbors on the docks.
A few minor drawbacks. Would have been nice if coffee filters were provided, but paper towels did the trick! As noted in another review, the upstairs fridge struggled to keep at least the freezer cold enough. The last drawback was a fair amount of small ants in the house, concentrated in kitchen, upstairs bathroom, and living room. Ant spray was supplied and we used it when the numbers warranted it. Also came across several what appeared to be palmetto bugs, which are large cockroaches, which we disposed of. But I must reiterate that the house was so enjoyable that these drawbacks would not stop us from coming back, but keeps me from giving this home a 5 star rating. And I suspect the insect problems are a common problem in OBX, based on some quick unscientific Google research I just did!
Also, be ready to climb stairs. The kitchen, living room, main area is on the top floor, so that's 2 full flights up from the ground. One of the main bedrooms is also up top, so you can plan around that. I assume this is typical for the elevated ocean homes.
All in all, a great place to visit. -

WalkersvillePeaceful place to unwind on the Sound size.
Left on 08/01/2012 for a stay in July 2012
This is a lovely home with a decent view of the sound. We enjoy the easy access to the sound for our jetski. There is plenty of outdoor space with a covered front porch, upper deck and covered lower deck. The patio furniture was comfortable.
The king size bed in the lower master bedroom was extremely comfortable. The queen size bed on the top floor not so comfortable - it lacked support. This property offered 3 fold out cots or beds which came in very handy.
There is plenty to do from this property: fishing and crabbing directly behind the property, canoeing in the canals, basketball, swimming in the community pool or working out at the fitness center.
You will need to bring your own beach umbrella and beach chairs. The beach is an easy 5 to 10 minute drive. There is a wonderful public beach with lifeguards and outdoor shower just a short drive down Rt 12.

SidneyWonderful Family Vacation!!
Left on 06/25/2012 for a stay in June 2011
The first thing I noticed was how clean the house was and so pretty! I love the beach theme and how large the rooms were. The bathrooms were large and the views from the windows were beautiful! We had ages from 8 months to 62 years and everyone felt at home. The location was perfect, close to the beach and shops but peaceful at night. I truely can't say anything negative about our experience except that our stay was too short!

Canandaigua, NYSpacious, comfy, affordable!
Left on 08/19/2011 for a stay in August 2011
Overall, I would give this property a 3.5 star rating...somewhere between average and very good. First, what we loved: The layout of the house worked perfectly for our family of 4 adults and 3 children - plenty of space! The view of the Sound from the balcony was a nice surprise, and we loved being able to dock our rented pontoon and catch our own crabs right behind our house! Having an extra fridge in the basement and a canoe for our use was great as well. Although it was too hot to sit outside most days (95+) the furniture on the balcony was really nice and comfy.
Areas for improvement: First, the ants. We called management our first day there asking for new ant traps, and none were delivered. I suppose we could have purchased new ones, but felt that should not have been our responsibility. Which brings me to the many other items we had to purchase at Food Lion that we could have brought from home had we known ahead of time: T Paper, P Towel, Garbage Bags, Salt, Sugar, Coffee Filters, Dishwasher Det, Kitchen Cleaner, etc. I buy these items in bulk at home for much less than what we had to pay at Food Lion. A list of which items are provided by management and which items renters are responsible for could easily be emailed a week or so ahead of time, saving people time and money.
Second, we had trouble getting hot water in the lower-level Master bath shower. Again, we called for maintenance on the first day and no one ever came to fix the problem - not a great showing by PC! The only other nit-picky item was that the upstairs fridge really didn't keep things very cold (the older fridge in basement worked much-better) and the a/C had trouble keeping the upstairs cool in the heat. Adjusted the lower-level vents to force more air upstairs and kept the blinds closed and fans whirring during the day, but it didn't help much. The decor was a bit outdated as well, but for the $$, we didn't expect granite countertops and brand-new furniture either!

This is our second year staying at Pirate's Cove and each time, was everything expected and more. The layout of RV#19 worked out great because our children and the grandchildren were on the lower level and privacy was had by all.
The customer service of Pirate's Cove each year has been excellent. -

We enjoyed our stay at Rv19 in Pirates Cove. The location was very nice for our children close to the pool, the children enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and canoeing. The bedding was a little tight for our 7 children (and one boyfriend). Overall our stay was very nice and the rental supprt staff was very helpful.

This was the first time we have stayed in a Home. We had extra family members and it worked out perfectly. We love how we could see the sound and I (mom)could wake and see the sunrise from my own bed if I didnt want to get up yet! We are planning to stay in another house next year with 5 bedrooms. We really, really enjoyed this home #19 RV, it met our every need. Thanks so much to the maintenance dept. they were always wonderful to deal with when we needed them. Cant wait to see you next year!! My hubby and I may have to make a separate trip of our own too! :) Happy summer to you all and God Bless You!

Chesapeake, VAA Fabulous Vacation for Everyone
Left on 12/21/2010 for a stay in August 2010
We vacationed in august and had a fabulous time. We spent our mornings drinking coffee and evenings after dinner on the back deck overlooking a beautiful view of the canal out to the sound and one of the two pools. It is very spacious, accommodating eight of us comfortably and was very clean and tastefully decorated. The cul-de-sac is very quiet and we were very impressed with how clean and manicured the entire community is. There was always something to do; swimming at the pool, canoeing, taking long walks on the docks, relaxing in the hammock, going to the snack/tiki bar and watching the boats come in and out. My husband was able to join a make-up charter and returned with a white marlin and lots of dolphin. The location is great as it is just a short drive to the quaint town of Manteo, the beaches, shopping and many dining choices. I would recommend, without reservation, a vacation to Rudder Village #19 and we hope to do it again next year.
