      Beautiful resort

Left on 07/27/2011 for a stay in July 2011

Manuel antonio is our second stop after arenal. Locals we interacted with all agreed on tulemar being one of the top resorts in the area and it sure didn't disappoint. A security gate makes the resort feels safe and secluded. The office is to the right of the gate, and the staffs were friendly and informative. Once the check in is done, we hopped into the shuttle and started our decent down the steep hill to our room. Our room was 303 in the 1 bedroom selected villa. It was a last minute decision prior to departure to upgrade from bungalow to select and villa and I am so glad we did! The huge difference between the two is the awesome balcony. Perfect place for us to lounge during the rain and still being able to enjoy the view outside. The bungalows seem darker from outside when we walked by, still had gorgeous views however does seem dated as other reviewers stated. There is one downside to our room though, which is that there is a tri-level private house to the right of us that blocks the awesome sunset we were hoping to see from our balcony. I'm not sure if it's because of the private home, our villa isn't surrounded by tall plants and trees like the other ones are, we've only seen one monkey during our 4 day stay. The monkey jumped on the only tree next to our villa and was gone within seconds. We were extremely disappointed since we had high expectations of seeing monkeys. That was another reason I upgraded to the villa, but oh well. The private beach is nice. The waves get high and rough in the afternoon. The worker there will set up umbrellas and loungers for you. Some rocks in the water so water shoes might be helpful. The provide boogie boards, kayaks and fins. The bar is pricy (typical resort price) but the drinks are good.
As far as food goes, market is walking distance to the left of tulemar entrance. We brought bags of fruit during the transfer from arenal to Manuel off the fruit stands. 5 mangoes for $1, can't beat that. Had the driver stop at the market and picked up drinks and bottle of wine, didn't get coffee since they provide you with it in the room and also a coffee maker. Got cereals, bread and butter and that took care of breakfast since we always have to leave early for excursions. The room does have stove and cookware if you want to cook yourself. We went to Victorias for the first night. Pricy but good ambience. Kids like the pizza and pasta while two adults ordered some special items. Dinner was $140 for the four of us including virgin cocktails and two kids and alcohol drinks for me and my husband. Following days we discovered cafe Milagros! After days of eating pizza, pastas and casados I was so glad for a change of food. I tried all the wraps there and enjoyed every single one. Mahi mahi anything there is yummy, and the coffee specialty drinks are to die for. My favorite was expresso shake with expresso and chocolate chip ice cream, kids loved the yuca fries and blackberry lemonade. I made the whole family come back every single day after. The shuttle drivers are nice enough to drive us there since it isn't far from tulemar, about 200 feet from entrance, but it was nice not having to walk in the rain so was extremely grateful.
Now the excursions. We did rafting, ATv and walking tour in Manuel antonio national park. The tour operator was referred by a family friend that was here last year. One of the best operators we've had not to speak of the price, which is much cheaper than going through hotels. I will write a separate review under unique tours, costa rica since they don't operate under tulemar, or simplely write me nd I'll pass on the detail info. We also used this certified park guide that was recommended by the same tour operator, he met us on the bus on the way to the park. Price is extremely fair and he kept the kids on the toes by pointing out interesting facts throughout. Never a dull moment. And if you are thinking about going to the park, please do not go without a guide or you will circle the park wondering why you are there. Things they point out are sometimes smaller than your nails and camouflaged, I kept questioning the guide if they are fake and that's why he knows exactly where to look. He laughs and simply steps closer so the creature would move to prove the point. Also, let me know if you want his info for the tour.
One last note. People there are very relaxed and laid back. Do not go there with your big city attitude. My husband was told several times to slow down and enjoy, pure life is what they go by. I loved it when my husband was speechless. Imagine having a rafting guide tell you to sit down and enjoy the water fall, and keeps telling you to sit and enjoy with a calm voice... Pure life he says. Wow it was refreshing while most of the tours we've been with was rushed rushed rushed.
