LancasterJungle Love
Left on 02/25/2013 for a stay in February 2013
We loved our stay at Big House and miss being there! We also stayed at several hotels in Costa Rica, but their customer service did not compare to that of Daan and his wife. Daan always offered assistance and was willing to help arrange anything we needed. In fact, since I am a teacher, I mentioned I was interested in seeing a school. Daan took me with him to drop off his daughter so I could have a look around. Since the jungle is damp and the beach is sandy, we went through clothes quickly. Again, what wonderful customer service - each day our laundry basket would be picked up and would magically be returned later in the day. There are also fold-up camping chairs that you can borrow from the office to use at the beach.
We were glad we had packed lightly, as we ended up walking from Manzanillo to Congo Bongo with our luggage, and Congo Bongo has a gravel lane. (As you get near Manzanillo on the bus, be looking on the left for the Congo Bongo sign - you can tell the bus to stop there, you don't need to ride all the way in to town). If you use Interbus, they can drop you at the door, but we enjoyed the adventure and experience of the local bus, and it was much more affordable.
Daan must have an artistic eye. The simple decorations, Costa Rican rocking chairs and unique dining table made Big House very visually pleasing and restful. Tropical plants have been artfully blended-in around the houses and the path to the beach. We absolutely loved our walk to the beach through the jungle. People told us to bring ear plugs for the howler monkeys, and they certainly are loud and unique, but we loved hearing them along with the other noises and rain at night. The bedrooms were a bit more rustic than I thought they would be, but it really didn't matter. It just made it more like a little cabin in the woods. When you sit in Big House, it is private. You do not need to be looking at what others are doing. Yet the other houses are close enough that you do not feel isolated. You can sometimes hear others at a distance, almost like camping, but there is more space between you.
It was very easy to cook, and we enjoyed our evenings around the table. A few tips for being at the house with teens: If your kids are not adventurous eaters, bring along peanut butter from Peurto Viejo or San Jose, as the stores in Manzanillo only have a few basic items (You can get bread, jam, milk, beans, rice, pasta, hot dogs, beer, wine, etc). Treat yourselves to fresh pineapple and mango. Pack a deck of cards, and before you go, collect a list of games that can be played with one deck. We enjoyed playing Hearts, President and Spoons with the kids in the evening. We tried to limit Wifi time and spend time together as a family. When starting to cook, first check the pots to see if they need a quick rinse. They probably will be fine, but one night I didn't check, and when I looked down into the pot, I was boiling ants along with the pasta. (Who cares, you are here for the adventure and true beauty, not Ritz and Glitz). Look up how to play carpet ball online. We made our own court in the sand and spent hours tossing a coconut - trying to knock each others' (looked like walnuts or baby coconuts) into a small ditch. We also played bocci ball using coconuts.
As for local entertainment, we enjoyed holding the baby monkeys at the Jaguar Rescue Center and loved the fun and beauty of the zipline canopy tour. Snorkeling was not that great, but it could be worth the effort to swim out near the coral on a day when the water is calm.
Do take bug spray, but we did not find the mosquitos to be more bothersome than a summer evening in Pennsylvania.
We had wanted a vacation where our children could absorb some of the culture of a country - not do the all-inclusive kind approach, but not be overwhelmed with culture shock either. This was the perfect blend of exposure and being tourists. The bus ride from San Jose showed the beauty of the mist-covered mountains, banana plantations, and where the jungle meets the sea. Yet we also saw homes, poverty, garbage, and reality.
We stayed at "Casa Grande" for six nights and it has become a part of our souls. We will always hold our memories of our stay there close in our hearts. -

Duluth, MinnesotaBest place I've ever stayed
Left on 02/24/2013 for a stay in February 2013
This is the most beautiful spot I've ever stayed. It is like outdoor living with all the comforts of indoor living and everything you need. The hosts were so nice and took care of us so well including great restaurant recommendations and a great local guide Omar who took us on the most amazing tours of the jungle. We stayed in the root house, I can't explain what it's like to sit outside on the rocking chair in a tropical rain storm listening to the drops on the roof and watching the jungle at night. It's the best experience I've ever had. We are for sure coming back every year if not sooner! Oh and did I mention the outdoor shower right in a tree, the howler monkeys and the dogs and cats, all so great. The beach is close by and extremely beautiful.

Mount Pleasant, South CarolinaWonderful and relaxing
Left on 10/04/2012 for a stay in September 2012
My wife and I stayed at the Palm House for a week in Sept. It was perfect for the 2 of us. There was an extra room as well, so our kids would have been comfortable here as well, except we left them in the states this visit to CR. It was exactly what we needed. We left our cell phones in the states, and there was no tv. We did have our ipad, and there was easy wifi access so we could stay in touch with the kids when we wanted to. If you want to shop and be pampered in a 5 star hotel this is not for you. If you want to get away from everything in a wonderful house on a beautiful property in the jungle this is perfect.
The monkeys will frequently run around the trees right above your house. They'll also drop sticks, leaves and nuts on your house as well. You'll also be visited by toucans and parrots. At night geckos and things i didn't know what they were visited as well. The natural beauty is amazing.
The beach is an easy 10 minute walk through the jungle. Daan, Ernesto and Jose have done an incredible job with the property. We had a car so getting to Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo was easy. The people we met were very friendly. There are plenty of good restaurants near by as well. Plenty of places to have a beer with a view of the caribbean.
Daan was more than happy to point you in the right direction for restaurants, and things to do. Jose and Ernesto were also very helpful and friendly.
If you want a beautiful, quiet (when the howler monkeys aren't doing their thng, or the parrots squawking) and relaxing place to stay, I would recommend to stay here. I hope to go back, and we'll take the kids next time. -

My daughter, her boy friend and myself spent the first week of our Christmas Holiday in CR at Palm House. We loved everything about it. Daan, his family and staff are the nicest people and a huge source of information. The houses are wonderfully appointed with comfortable furniture and attention to details. Sure it is humid and there are bugs (none in the bedrooms) but wouldn't you expect that in the rain forest? We saw an abundance of birds and other animals and the forest was beautiful. The beach is wild and beautiful, the water very warm and Daan organised a walk through the forest with Omar, a local who showed us some amazing things. The whole week was an amazing experience. I wish I was still there.
