Fantastic stay, at the heart of Moroccan hot summer life

Left on 08/15/2011 for a stay in August 2011

Just back from a great week in Marrakech, staying at Dar azure, following a week on the coast at Essaouria.
It was early days of Ramadan, and 42'C on one day. Dar azure was a welcome relief from the heat, with the luxury of air conditioning in the bedrooms. The courtyard always had a section of shade, and the lighting in the evenings with the fountain was very relaxing.
This riad was excellent value for money - the whole place has fantastic examples of Moroccan furniture and fixings, and the en-suite bathrooms are all made up to a very high standard, with dazzling mozaics too. The roof is fantastic, with a great area to chill in dappled shade, drink mint tea and laze in the sun.
The courtyard was a very impressive venue for breakfast, with a friendly finch flying down to snatch the odd bread crumb.
Khadija came to made breakfast and tidy each morning; she was very friendly and able to give helpful advice.
The neighbours and kiosk owners on Derb Chtouka and the top end of Rue de la Kasbah friendly and welcoming, and it was easy to buy cheap provisions around this area. Even a brand new grand taxi parked nearby, and I was able to track down the owner nearby, who was great value, including a ride back to the airport.
      Highly recommended.

So glad to hear that you had such an enjoyable and relaxing time at our riad Dar Azure in the Kasbah. As you mentioned, it's a very charming,, friendly and authentic quarter of Marrakech's old walled Medina, and that's why we chose it!

lovely, well situated riad in the Kasbah area

Left on 06/15/2011 for a stay in April 2011

We stayed for five days at Dar azure in april with a group of seven friends. The Dar was in a terrific position in the quiet Kasbah area just a ten minute stroll from Jemaa el Fna.
The four bedrooms are well appointed with ensuite bathrooms, each opening onto a courtyard or balcony. The roof terrace, furnished with comfortable outdoor furniture, is a fabulous place to sit at any time of the day enjoying views over the rooftops of Marrakech.
The maid/cook Khadija is a charming and sweet young woman who made us a delicious Moroccan breakfast daily.

The owner, Jackie Kelly, was a delight to deal with from our first enquiry months before we actually went to Morocco and her invaluable advice and cheerful answering of all our questions made the whole lead-up to our holiday so much more enjoyable. She organized transfers for us, into the atlas foothills to have lunch at a Kasbah and also to Fez which was our next port of call.

There are several excellent restaurants near the dar and also a couple of great places for massage or hammam within a couple of minutes walk.

Altogether a fabulous holiday experience which we can enthusiastically recommend to anyone wanting to rent a riad in Marrakech.

      A must - Superb accommodation

Left on 04/14/2011 for a stay in March 2011

Such a lovely riad situated in the best part of Marrakech (the old town) which has such character. The pictures give a true reflection of the accommodation which was spacious and authentic. The rooftop terrace was used every night with wonderful views. We would not hesitate to go back to Dar azure. The welcome received from the local representative was great. He not only served the evening meal (pre-ordered) but gave us loads of information about the place which put us all at ease. Breakfast was on the odd occasion a little repetitive but possibly we should have spoken to her about this but all in all was delicious.

A fantastic retreat that allows you to explore Marrakech

Left on 03/16/2011 for a stay in February 2011

Dar azure is a wonderful retreat for exploring Marrakech. Great for a family. We spent 3 days on a Sahara expedition with 4 young children. This includes accommodation and breakfast and evening meal. It was a lot of time in a mini bus but we all had a great time. The kids loved the camel ride and sleeping in the sand dunes in a bedouin camp. Fantastic value for money too. If your kids are up to a long journey, with plenty of stops and lovely places to visit it could be for you. But not if they get car sick. Crossing the atlas mountains is a very twisty rouite. Highly recommended and a great experience for chuildren.

Delighted to hear that you and your family enjoyed your stay at Dar Azure and found it a great base for exploring the clity. For those staying for a week, a 2 night trip to the desert is a must. Children love the new experiences of sleeping out in the desert under the stars and riding on camels!

      How relaxing was that!

We all enjoyed Dar azure and wish we were still there!!Khadijah was a joy - always cheery and there when needed.
Hassan & Martyn were also great and organised a fab trip to the Ourika Valley for us, so thanks very much for the contacts and all the information that you supplied prior to our visit which was very useful and helped to enhance our stay.
What a nice area too - very friendly and relaxed. We didn't cook any gastronomic delights but it was great to be able to shop locally in the markets and shops, and then throw things together in the kitchen - hope Khadijah wasn't too perturbed by our efforts.

Khadija was delighted to hear your comments. She really enjoys cooking for our guests, who always tell us how much they enjoyed her home-cooked tajines! The Kasbah is a very convenient area of the Medina, where you'll find everything on your doorstep!

Superb Riad - quiet but close enough to the center

Left on 12/23/2010 for a stay in December 2010

We are int he middle of our stay and can't recommend this Riad enough. The owners have furnished it beautifully and the whole experience is well worth it. The maid is excellent and her breakfasts are delightfull. With seven of us staying there is room for us all to be together but big enough to find a quiet corner if required.

The main Medina is a short walk away passsed the Kasbah shops before you reach the main square. We are so glad that we are not closer to the Medina as the noise would be too much with all our kids as well. The local agents are extremely helpful and will organise everything you need.

The locl shops are excellent and will still bargain, though not as much as the Medina Souks. Locals are very friendly and helpful, always willing to direct you to a local shop. The nearby Hammam Les Bains De L'Alhambra was excellent (On the recommendation of the local agent Hassan) and well worth the visit - in fact we want to go again.

Al in all a stunning place to stay and the gallery pictures do not do it justice it is better than it looks!

An oasis of calm in the Medina

Left on 07/07/2010 for a stay in July 2010

I stayed in Dar azure with 3 friends and we were really delighted with our choice. The house itself is lovely, all 4 bedrooms have ensuites so we each had our own space. The rooms are comfortable and the a/C was very welcome in the July heat. Every room is equipped with a hairdryer which is a nice touch and the towels are a decent size.

The location is perfect. Initially I was concerned that we were a little further from the main square than a lot of hotels but once we arrived I realised this was a blessing. The house is in a quiet residential street and the local kids were delightful, always smiling and practising their English and French on us. As four women we felt quite comfortable coming home late at night and we never got hassled in our street at all. However, once you get closer to the square it's a different story as the touts hang around outside hotels waiting for you to come out in the morning.

There are several lovely places to eat nearby, notably an amazing restaurant just a few doors up from the house. There are also lots of local shops to get drinks, fruit etc. There is also a well known hotel around the corner which makes giving directions to taxi drivers very easy if you don't feel like walking home.

The whole trip was a wonderful experience and Dar azure definitely contributed to our enjoyment of Marrakech. I will certainly come back and would have no hesitation is recommending it to my friends and family.

We are so glad you enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of Dar Azure and that you felt at home in this charming and interesting area of the Medina. The Kasbah is a convenient location, with many sights, shops and restaurants on your doorstep. Also being able access the house right up to the front door by taxi, is a big bonus in the Medina, especially at night, or when you come home laden with too many goodies! Many thanks for your kind comments. Jackie and Luke
