The Reef House is an ocean front house on a beautiful 8 mile stretch of sandy beach in a private neighborhood in Bahama Palm Shores on the island of Abaco in the Bahamas. The beach is surrounded by natural reefs that calm the waves and make for perfect swimming, snorkeling, or fishing in the clear waters, or you can just walk on the un-crowded shore.
The Reef House is our second home, and fully furnished for our, as well as our guests enjoyment. As you enter, the great room has cathedral ceilings with a complete kitchen, and a spacious dining and living area that opens to the screened porch overlooking the ocean. There are stairs to th...e sundeck, (or moondeck), on top of the porch. Off either side of the great room there are two queen sized bedrooms
with adjoining full baths. Upstairs there are two loft bedrooms accessible by individual stairs, and they have two twin beds in each. The house can easily accommodate two families, or 8 people, and the kitchen, dining, and living facilities are designed for that also. There is only one Bahamian hammock on the porch, and you have to get in line for that. There is usually an unbelievable ocean breeze, but we do have central air conditioning for when the breeze dies; and also heat for those rare cool winter evenings.
The amenities include a gas stove, outdoor gas grill, microwave, refrigerator with ice maker, extra frig, brisker, dishwasher, garbage compacter, pure filtered water, and clothes washer and drier. There is hi speed Wi-Fi throughout the house, and a Vonage telephone for free calls to the States, and a cell phone for local calls. For your entertainment, there is a 39" flat screen satellite TV, DVD, and a stereo/CD player with ipod station, and some "island" CD's. In the cabinets you will find a library with some local lore, playing cards, games, binoculars, and a serious telescope in the bedroom. We furnish a 10' Walker Bay dinghy, a fiberglass 2 person kayak, and an inflatable raft for our guests. There is an outdoor shower for when you come off the beach.
The Reef House is about 20 miles from the nearest town, which is Marsh Harbour. It is recommended that you rent a car, (about $350 to $400 a week), which gives you the ability to explore the entire island of Abaco, that varies from isolated fishing villages to fancy resorts. There are ferries to the out islands, such as Elbow Cay, Guana Cay, and Man-O-War, or you can rent a boat for as little as 1/2 day. There are also guides who will take you fishing, scuba, snorkeling, or just island hopping. Abaco island stretches on for 120 miles, and the Reef House is centrally located as a perfect starting place to travel the island.
Marsh Harbour is a small, one stoplight, tourist friendly, town surrounding a beautiful harbor, with many unique restaurants, shoppes, liquor stores, hardware stores, and several grocery stores, one of which is a true supermarket with some items you won't find in the U.S. There are no casinos or gambling in Marsh Harbour, hence it is safe and very little crime. I feel as safe in the Reef House as I do in our house in the states, and that is very safe! The U.S. Dollar is accepted everywhere in the Bahamas, and most places take credit cards.
We rent the Reef House for a minimum of 1 week, (7 nights), and the rent is $1,800 a week.
We require a deposit of $800 to reserve a week. Of course you may stay longer than a week, and
the charge is $225 for each additional night. If you stayed a second week, that would be only $1,575 for the second week. That is all inclusive, and there are no cleaning fees or taxes. You are responsible, and are required to pay for any breakage that occurs during occupancy. Our caretaker is Jackie Albury, who lives nearby, and you will be able to contact her for questions or problems. Once you have committed with a deposit, we will send directions and maps, and much more information about the Reef House and its surroundings.
The Reef House is about 160 miles due east of West Palm Beach, Florida. You get to Abaco by flying to Marsh Harbour International Airport, which is undergoing a beautiful renovation by the Bahamas government. The airport has direct flights by Continental and American airlines from the States, however if you get to Florida or Nassau, there are several smaller airlines, including Bahamas Air, that fly to Marsh Harbour. It is anticipated, that with the completion of the new airport, there will be many
