Our 3 days at Strathisla were a highlight of our trip to Sri Lanka. The beautifully restored house is set in a lovely lush rainforest garden overlooking a valley of forest and paddy fields. It feels like a real home away from home with wonderful food served up by the very hospitable JKO and his wife who also took us on a very interesting walking tour of the property and surrounding. We were all sorry to leave.

melbourne, australiaa restful break from the tourist trail...

After travelling for a while...you can reach a stage where you feel that everyone is seeing the same things!!! Staying at Strathisla gives you an authentic experience of Sri Lankan country side with a welcome absence of hoards of tourists. The grand old home is truly a comfortable and restful place to soak up delightful tea plantation countryside. It is also close to Kandy and to the cultural sights so that if peace and quiet is not what you are after all day and evening then there is plenty to explore. Both Peter and Jaykumar the manager are balcony to ponder on and even had a fire fly come and visit!!

A wonderful place to stay. A beautifully renovated colonial tea plantation bungalow with character and history. The spacious and generously proportioned rooms were a pleasure to spend time in as was the luxuriant tropical garden and swimming pool looking over the hills and tea plantations below.
The delicious food was prepared with love and care using local Sri Lankan recipes and special requests were catered for, as were children's needs.
We were taken on a guided walk of the local tea plantation and to the stunning local waterhole and Buddhist temple nestled in the rock above it. On another day we visited a local tea factory for a tour and tea tasting - a fascinating experience.
Pete and his staff were very friendly and helpful and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay. They also gave us a wonderful insight into Sri Lankan life. We'll definitely come back again on our next trip.

Sydney, AustraliaBest place in Sri Lanka
Left on 05/16/2012 for a stay in January 2012
We stayed at this gorgeous, beautifully restored bungalow for 5 days. It's a hidden retreat in luscious green surroundings away from the hustle and bustle of the main town but still situated in a local residential area. One of the great things is that there are only three bedrooms which makes you feel very at home. The rooms are light and airy, spacious and beautifully set out. You feel instantly relaxed as soon as you walk through the door.
There is a great outdoor area where you can sit on the shady veranda and have breakfast overlooking the valley, or jump into the wonderful swimming pool. The home cooked food was beyond amazing. It was incredible and to be honest the best food we had in Sri Lanka!
We found our stay here to be a refreshing change to Kandy and in hindsight would have preferred to stay here and leave out noisy, hectic Kandy altogether. The crew made us feel incredibly welcome and created a holiday highlight experience for us that was really memorable!
There is absolutely nothing you couldn't like about this place, go now!! -

Strathisla Bungalow had just finished a major restoration when I came and stayed. It has beautifully captured the origional colonial charm that is a delight for all travelers from all walks of life.
Nestled on the side of a deep valley the views are breathtaking. Its a perfect distance from the large towns, enabling you to forget about the rest of the world, but close enough to give you access to all the highlights of The Hill Country, the temples of Kandy, the tea plantations, water holes, unforgettable hiking options and motor cycle riding.
All the rooms in the bungalow are very large and spacious and very comfortable, the windows offer more amazing views to the valley below.
When I was not off exploring the tea country, my favorite place was the huge verandah overlooking the huge pool which of course overlooks the valley. Why (if you are going to spend a quiet day in) would you need to go anywhere else? I think I ate every meal on the verandah and by day was entertained by squirrels, sunbirds, eagles and kingfishers and at night I could have sat watching the fireflies for hours.
Jko and Pryia's cooking was excellent, offering excellent Sri Lanken and Western food, though I always prefer the Sri Lanken when given the choice and theirs was so good how could I refuse.
My 2 weeks prior to visiting The Hill Country were very hectic and Stathisla offered me the much needed place to unwind for a few days before returning home and a window into the heart of Sri Lanka that I thought I would never find
Thank-you so much Jko, Prya and Peter. Because of your wonderful hospitality my few short days with you will not be forgotten for years to come. And will remain my favorite place that I stayed in while I was in Sri Lanka.

This is for those who seek an authentic remote experience away from the tourist hotspots and the commercial exploiters that can annoy visitors. A ten minute drive from Matale up the mountains, you will notice the modest rural lifestyle and peaceful setting. The accommodation comes in colonial era manor converted to accommodate travelers. It is simple and basic accommodation yet clean and comfortable. There is a swimming pool, relaxing verandah and vista over the local mountainous region that will make sure this is the most relaxing part of your stay in Sri Lanka. A friendly Tamil family manage the property, and a delicious Sri Lankan style lunch is available daily.
A modest walk around the area will reveal the local farming community (so humble and friendly), the indentured tea farmers nearby (admirable but poignant) and the local spiritual practices and temples(modest but welcoming).
A drive further up the hill gives opportunity to visit waterfalls and a colonial golf course, as well as some spectacular views if weather permits.
It is about one hour's drive from Candy, and another hour or so to Sigiri Rock, making this a convenient and refreshing stop over on the way to those areas. Transport and tours to all of these areas can be arranged at the Guest House.
