UKLoved having this much space
Left on 05/22/2013 for a stay in May 2013
Considering this place is right in the centre of Melbourne, I was surprised by how quiet and spacious it was. I really liked the furniture and overall style, and how the owners leave you alone (there's no onsite reception).
A good value stay and a great base from which to explore Melbourne. -

Pros: We really enjoyed our stay. The apartment had everything we needed and was central and convenient as promised. Clean, comfortable and loads of light. We also liked the very unique design touches.
Cons: One of the reviews cautioned that the hot water is really hot - it is! It's fine, but just take care! -

This apartment was great! It was in such a great location. The apartment is neat, clean and comfortable. Check-in although daunting at first was actually really easy. Easier than some hotels! The apartment has it's own unique character that is charming and inviting. We did not want to leave! As an extra bonus we were very generously allowed late check out as our flight was in the late afternoon. The apartment is very private and quiet, ideal for the long weekend getaway. I will definitly stay at alkira again. Can not praise the apartment enough!

LondonGreat Find!
Left on 04/12/2013 for a stay in April 2013
I come to Melbourne often and tend to have trouble finding larger, central places to stay which have character. This place is great. It's not part of a chain, has genuine personal touches (loved the vintage metal desk!) and is very reasonably priced.
It doesn't have a concierge service, (so if that's what you are after this isn't for you) - but it has all that I needed and is the sort of place I wish I owned myself.

Sydney, AustraliaVery average...
Left on 04/07/2013 for a stay in March 2013
I wanted to like this place and thought I would give all the positive reviews but I found myself asking "How did the apartment get selected as one of the best getaways?". In my opinion, I certainly think there are places in Melbourne that offer a better experience and value.
Pros:
- Communication from Michelle was excellent.
- Building security was excellent.
- Apartment is large and offers plenty of space.
- Bedroom has a door which is needed (see cons).
- Writing desk shown on the pictures is a good size and nicely positioned by the window.
- Windows let in a good amount of natural sunlight.
- Kitchen and amenities are adequate, not stellar, but adequate.
- Cafe on ground floor of building has excellent coffee/breakfasts.
- Location is convenient.
Cons:
- Convenient location also means lots of street noise including from daily street sweeping and garbage trucks running near midnight. Double glazing would go a long way towards reducing the street noise.
- Bedroom door helps significantly to reduce truck noise so that you can get some sleep but it does create a claustrophobic feeling.
- I was expecting there to be wireless internet which is the main reason I selected apartment alkira but couldn't find anything. I did find instructions in a drawer which said that a wireless signal may be able to be received from the cafe on the ground floor but the signal may be weak. It was. The other stated option was another place outside of the building.
- Lighting is terrible, particularly in the darkly painted bathroom. Even after moving a lamp in, it was impractical to see my face while shaving or to put product in my hair. I'm not sure how a woman would apply makeup properly.
- I'm only 5'8 and I thought the shower was way too short/low. If you're 5'10 or taller, it'd be a struggle. Shower stall was also quite small compared to others I've experienced. Shower rod for the curtain isn't the most secure.
- Credit card payment is not an option.

We chose this place based on the great reviews it received from others. So pleased we did. It was a terrific option for somewhere central, close to shops, cafes, art gallery & theatres and very moderately priced.

LondonMuch Better than Expected!
Left on 03/19/2013 for a stay in March 2013
I was a bit nervous about booking this apartment.
The reviews were very good but it was so reasonably priced I was sure it wouldn't look anything like the pics on the web. I was so pleasantly surprised when we arrived as it was just as nicely presented as the photos and much bigger than it looked on the website. When my husband lay on the bed I knew we'd hit gold - as he's so fussy with beds - but he announced that he thought it would do just fine!
So yes, I would recommend to anyone - fussy or not. We had a lovely time in Melbourne. -

We enjoyed a fabulous stay at alkira apartments on a 9 day visit to Melbourne for some long overdue R and R. The apartment was absolutely fantastic; well appointed, spacious, comfortable and brilliantly located to everything from shopping, restaurants and bars through to the free tram service and Southbank. We have already recommended alkira to friends and its a no-brainer that we will be staying there again.

Left on 05/31/2012 for a stay in March 2012
I travel a fair bit and always try to find self-contained apartments because I really hate hotel rooms. This one was great - spacious, clean, funky style, really central and very good value. The check-in is a little unusual, (you pick up the key from a shop near the apartment) but I actually quite liked that because I like my privacy and appreciated being able to check in under my own steam. My only complaints would be that the hot water from the taps is quite hot (so I just had to remember to moderate with cold water) and the internet is a bit sluggish at times, but overall I really liked staying here.

Left on 05/24/2012 for a stay in January 2012
My wife and I were in town for the australian Open and the apartment was within walking distance to the venue, which was perfect. As you can probably tell from the pictures, the decor is very funky/stylish, but not very comfortable. The check-in is a little strange (you find the key at a local grocery store), but it worked OK for us. The Wi-fi is dreadfully slow, so beware if you need to stay in touch via computer. Overall, the location and the value were the highlights.

Beaconsfield, Bucks. U.K.Great central location in Melbourne
Left on 04/06/2012 for a stay in January 2012
Good sized one bed apartment in central location, very short walk to Flinders St. Station(tram terminal as well as trains)and also short walk across bridge to South Bank with restaurants, cafes, casino etc. and although on a busy street, we found it quiet, especially in the bedroom which at the back of the apartment. There is an excellent Visitor Information Centre situated in Flinders Square, where you can buy a good value weekly ticket for the trams. A good Coles supermarket is just 2 blocks away opposite the side entrance to Flinders St. Station.
The apartment is a good size and the kitchen although smallish was well equipped and there is a top loader washing machine, but no tumble dryer. I thought it would be a problem to get clothes dry but found if I washed first thing in morning and hung clothes on a "clothes horse", they were dry by the evening. The lounge is spacious with a study area and free wifi - much appreciated as not many places offer this facility. The furnishings are art deco style and somewhat quirky - certainly very different from the usual apartment. The bedroom is large and bedding is of good quality, lots of fluffy towels are supplied in the bathroom. We stayed for a week and found that practically all everyday requirements were supplied - e.g. washing powder, washing up liquid, toilet rolls etc. There is no car parking facility but being in the city we really did not need a car, trams and trains are excellent and most sights are within walking distance of this apartment. Booking on line from the U.K. was no problem at all and the owner was extremely helpful in answering any queries we had. Keys had to be collected from a local convenience store 5 mins walk away, but that was no problem.
The only negative comment I would make is that we found the apartment slightly dark. The bedroom and bathroom especially would be better with additional lighting for the evenings. -

We stayed in alkira apartment for a week while visiting Melbourne for the Grand Prix. Our goal was to stay somewhere a little 'different' that truly reflected 'Melbourne' rather than staying at a predictable hotel. We certainly got what we asked for! Very edgy space, with a bold colour scheme and very quirky antique furniture. The location of this property was truly brilliant as it was only a few minutes walk to the Mall, a minute or two to the nearest tram stop, and about a 5 minute walk to Flinders Station. Someone has obviously gone to a lot of trouble to decorate the property, and a lot of thought put into the amenities offered for guests. A couple of small negatives - a very strange smell seemed to linger in the apartment - we think it was cooking smells from the cafe below. After a few minutes with the windows open and fans on it seemed to clear. Some minor maintenance might be needed too, but nothing that seriously affected our stay. I wouldnt probably stay here again, because I do appreciate the standard of service offered by hotels (and the opportunity to speak with someone face to face if there is a problem), but I would reccomend it to couples wanting to try something difference and really feel like 'Melbournians' for the weekend.

We were charmed by this beautiful and central apartment a few steps away from shops and tourist attractions. We enjoyed the little extras as a welcome and the kindness over email with the owners as well as all the tips on Melbourne.
I do recommend this great value place for a few days or a few weeks.
We will certainly be back as Melbourne is a great city. -

We went to Melbourne for one of my partner's 'zero' birthdays and are sooo pleased we found this delightful apartment. It really made our stay special. It's wonderfully centrally located and elegantly styled. The ecclectic retro furniture and art give it a real individual feel. A word of warning though, there is no on-site parking and the meter inspectors are vicious!

My partner and I stayed at alkira apartments when we were doing a casual visit to Melbourne. The location of alkira was perfect, it was close to the shops, train station and transport.
I found the main thing was to not expect anyone to be there to greet you - this could be a negative or positive depending on who you are.
The apartment itself was very clean and cosy. It's decorations were very unique - loved the small little touches eg. chocolate, sugar cubes, music Cd's, a whole pile of travel brochures and guides and coffee machine.
The bedroom was very nice and dark and the bed very comfortable, however all through the night I would be woken up by knocking, which probably occurred every couple of hours for some unknown reason. Furthermore, on one of the days I stayed there the lobby smelt like vomit (though that's not really alkira's fault).
In general, loved the small details that the owner's had put into the apartment but I just wish I found out the cause of that knocking was because that meant a night without good rest. -

I loved the quirky and unique furniture and decor - such a great departure from beige hotel rooms. Only thing I wished for was a better vacuum cleaner for the dark bedroom carpet which shows everything! Booking was easy, although I struggled to find the key box (small thing). Otherwise, apartment had everything you need for a comfortable stay and location was perfect for a CBD experience; close to transport, shopping, food and bars. Would stay again!

Left on 01/30/2012 for a stay in January 2012
My wife and I were in Melbourne for the australian Open and could not have found a better place to stay. We were a block from the free trams that sent to the tennis center. 3 stops later and we were staring at Rod Laver arena. Yet with all it's convenience close to shopping and restaurants in the CBD, it was on a quiet street where we looked into the trees out our windows. The apartment is creatively decorated and well-appointed and felt like we were staying in a friend's loft in any major city. Finally, I should comment on how easy the owner was to deal with. She was very friendly and helpful. it was a very positive experience.

Really enjoyed our 3 days stay at alkira. The apartment is spacious and very nicely furnished and has everything you could possibly need. Fantastic location in terms of accessing the city and Southbank areas and an easy walk from Southern Cross station. Also close to many good restaurants and cafes. Only difficulty we had was reading the codes on the key deposit boxes - if you need glasses make sure you have them with you.

SydneyLovely long weekend away
Left on 10/13/2011 for a stay in September 2011
We stayed at apartment alkira for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. The apartment was well laid out and really really spacious, which we didn't expect. We also love the quirky vintage furniture, very different to all other usual self contained apartment. The location is very convenient to all that melbourne cbd can offer. Although it was drizzling and extremely windy and cold outside, the moment we stepped into the apartment it was very well insulated even before we turned on the heater.
The downside to the apartment was the fact that we needed to get the key from the grocery shop; which was not located very far but with big luggage towed it was a little bit inconvenient. But all in all, it was a really great experience and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone else considering this place for a stay while in Melbourne. We would definitely come back next time we are in Melbourne.

Left on 07/18/2011 for a stay in July 2011
Apartment alkira is a gem in Melbourne.
After looking at Hotels and other apartments decided on alkira, and glad we did.
Being in a residential building means you are not plagued with noise from the guests in the next room or on your floor. You have the freedom hotels seem to take away from you, you relax, you have more than enough space and you come and go as you please.
Being so close to the trams, Flinders Station, Degraves Street and the boundless shopping Melbourne offers are further benefits..
Will stay here again I am sure. -

After reviewing many apartments in Melbourne, we decided on alkira due to the reviews which described it as something a little different, and also its location being a few doors up from Flinders Street and Queen. We weren't disappointed at all and loved our 8 days stay. It's on the first level overlooking the tree-lined street, main living area has polished concrete floor and is very spacious. The heating was very good and the area warmed up quickly. There's a well-equipped kitchen if you feel inclined as we did especially after visiting Queen Vic Markets. Coffee shops are all around, even one in the building. It just has everything going for a comfortable stay and within easy walking distance to almost everything. Even CDs and Dvds are provided. It really is a great find.

Left on 04/16/2011 for a stay in February 2011
This place is just what it says on the tin...huge, great style, clean, comfortable bed, nice products, location, location, location...so points for all that. My only 'but' is that there is no onsite parking - this is actually ok because the place is amazingly central and well connected by all forms of public transport, but it's a drag if you do happen to bring your car. Don't get me wrong, it's a comfortable walk to all the best bits of the CBD - about 10 minutes to the Queen Vic market, the same to the top of Collins street - less to the arts Centre, Art Gallery and arts Centre, but no good if you want to drive to the suburbs. Still, good value for a great central base.

Left on 02/18/2011 for a stay in February 2011
My boyfriend and I were looking for a self contained apartment in the centre of Melbourne so we could easily get to everything we wanted to see during our week there. Some short stay apartments claimed to be in the CBD but on closer inspection they were on the outskirts - which would have been a nuisance if we'd ended up there. This place is really and truly in the thick of things - a short five minute walk to just about anything in the city.
We loved the style of the place too. It's full of gorgeous retro stuff and has a really individual feel to it. The bed was comfy too. -

I spent a week at apartment alkira and really enjoyed my stay. The apartment is quite spacious and comfortable and has a real style to it - so much more enjoyable than hotel rooms which all seem to look the same these days.
It's located right in the middle of the centre of Melbourne but in a quieter street so you are really central but also tucked away.
Overall a great find!
