Casa del Cielo Grande is located in Merida Centro, in the subdivision of Santiago on Calle 59A (entre 82 y 84). A very well situated area with everything you may need close at hand.
A short walking distance from Clinica Merida (the home of some of the best medical specialists in Mexico, and a favorite for plastic surgery) Specialists treat you immediately - no referral from a GP required. The IMSS (Mx Medical Plan), a large AKI superstore is only 1 ½ blocks away from the casa, but if you prefer, Wal-Mart is a $27 MP taxi ride away.
There are 5 cocina economicas (inexpensive eateries for take out or, in some cases, eat in…they also deliver to the casa), all these within 2 blocks of the casa – 2 are on the same block!, 2 hair dressers/ beauticians within 1 block, A seafood patio bar/restaurant is no further than one block from here. There are at least 3 Chinese restaurants within a five minute walk.
Copy shops, Internet facilities/faxes, hardware / paint stores, carpentry shops, and upholstery and metal shops are all within one block.
It is only 1 ½ (long) blocks to the Zoo, which is as much an “adult†experience as it is a child’s. The Zoo has trains that circumferences the area every few minutes, many vendors’ stalls, and lots of different types of eating areas. There is even free internet wireless in the park area of the Zoo. It hosts free stage shows, public dancing and entertainment throughout the week. We were amazed at how clean and beautiful this landmark is. There are now two zoos in Merida.
Merida offers many many free events throughout the week. Lots of open air music and dancing - ethnic, as well as public participation. Loads of fun and no expenditure required...
Laundry services (for personal needs) are close at hand and items can be delivered for a small fee. Phone cards for your cells are available across the street from the casa.
We have lots and lots of information in a guest binder that show tours, prices, places of interest, doctors, dentists, night clubs, restaurants etc. and so much moremanicures, pedicures and massages are available in your apt or poolside, with some notice.

Additional fees will be charged for misuse of electricity. I.E. Please turn off all fans, lights, and a/c when leaving the property or when not inside for lengthly periods of time. All windows must be closed when using the a/c. $50.00/ week for A/C useage. Electricity is VERY expensive here, so this is a necessary additional charge.
There is a 10% discount for 3rd time return visitors!!! We will give a discount for 2 full or more months rental @ $1,250.00 CDN / mo. plus applic electricity fees etc. This is a savings of $40.00 CDN per month!!! The months must be booked ahead as no discount will be given for first month if guests want to extend their stay.

Amber's and John"s is a delightful place. The garden is pretty, well planned and well maintained, so there is privacy, a good place to "catch the rays", read or swim. The cassita is very comfortable and contains almost everything one needs for a month's stay. We walked every day in a nearby large park where there was lots of activity, a zoo and even a train. There is an "Akea" grocery store only 5 minutes away. Walmart and other large stores are further away which can be reached by bus or taxi or a long walk.
We enjoyed visiting the museums, downtown restaurants, and a large local market. We found the Mayans to be very friendly and always busy modernizing the downtown area. On Sundays some downtown streets are closed to traffic and live music is played in the squares with dancing for every one.
John was very helpful with suggestions for out of town tours and organizing taxis. We enjoyed the trip to Uxmal seeing and climbing the ruins, also stopping at a country market and a cenote on the way. Another day trip by bus took us to Celestun to see hundreds of flamingos and a panga ride with a local captain.
Amber has a good map showing the various bus routes and stops in the city. We found both amber and John to be great hosts and cooks. They often shared their culinary delights with us and also entertained us when their friends visited. We stayed a month and extended our visit another week. It's hard to believe how the time flies and it's been months since your stay with us. We often talk about what nice people you both are and how much we enjoyed having you here with us. The trees and the plants have grown so much since then, so it's more lush than ever. The back veranda is redone and tiled, the both outside kitchens have full roofs and workers are now replacing the front hedge with that high wall we spoke of. Hopefully we'll see you again in your travels. Take care, stay well, and continue enjoying your lives to the fullest!

Truly a piece of personal paradise in the middle of a bustling city. Amber and John provided not only wonderful hosting abilities but a tropical and comfortable resort style vacation. Once through the gates you are in an oasis of calm and comfort, yet you can walk to anything you wish within the city. The apartment is private and tastefully decorated with all you could desire. The grounds and pool are impeccably maintained and truly a feast for the eyes. Music and delicious home cooking are a part of this wonderful package not to mention friendship and pets away from home. Everyone is happy and helpful not to mention authentically friendly. You do not leave here without a new friendship. We shared some fantastic meals with John and amber as well as cocktails and stories. No picture or description could really do justice to the spread these fine people offer to their guests. If you want privacy you got it. If you want to party, you got it. If you want the best deal in Merida, I bet you got that too. We will be back to visit and hope that John and amber keep up this wonderful opportunity for others to share. Truly a fantastic and fun experience. Thanks for everything!!!

We stayed in this cozy casita for three weeks and loved every minute. Amber and John are so gracious and made us feel very welcome. They prepare a great meal nightly and we were always invited to join them. Every meal was fantastic! We had beautiful December weather for walking and exploring Merida but it was a little cool for swimming. We really appreciated John and amber's advice about what to do in the beautiful city of Merida. We especially enjoyed a trip to Progresso with John and amber and a night dancing at one of their favorite clubs. The apartment was fully stocked with everything you could possibly need. A nice grocery is located just a few blocks away. We walked all over Merida in the day and after dark and always felt completely safe. The residents of Merida were super friendly and always helpful. We both speak some Spanish and that was really helpful because many of the locals speak only Spanish. That made our trip even more fun.

Once again, a great time was had by all - just waay too short, wont be making that mistake again. Hope the Mexican a** plant recovers from tequilla night ( or was that rum night???)Your place is even more beautiful with all the extra work done in the last 8 months and we couldnt belive how much the plants have grown!Hope that Juanita Banana isnt driving you two nuts after the extensive spoiling. Girls...It was even more fun than the last time if that's possible! Your suitcase is waiting for you...I aired your clothes out on the line so they'll be fresh for your arrival. At least this time you won't have to cart so much down!
The a** plant has recovered remarkably and all filled in LOL. J has to keep pruning back some of the bigger trees just so people can walk back there, cus they're shooting up like crazy...gotta love this Merida weather!
Juanita Banana "thinks" everyone loves her the most, and loves to be spoiled, but I know you loved it as much as she did. After you left, she was always wanting "up" for quite a few days....thanks Fay LOL!!

I originally found Casa de Cielo Grande on the internet. After doing some more research and contacting amber and John via Email, I decided that my first week was going to be spent here. I am so glad that I decided to do so.
John and amber definitely make Casa de Cielo Grande a wonderful place to be! Both of them have spent the last three years in Merida and have an intimate knowledge of the area and people that they are more than happy to share. They were both extremely helpful and joining John on his morning walk showed me a side of Merida that I would have otherwise missed.
The apartment is outstanding. As mentioned in the description, it's located in the very back of the property behind the pool, giving the resident(s) complete privacy and even comes with its own tables and hammocks. The shower is hot and pressurized more than any other place I've found so far. The apartment comes with all the amenities you could want and there were many times when I put something on the shopping list only to find that amber and John had already thoughtfully provided it. High speed internet is available and blazing fast, the TV has the platinum package of channels and the air conditioner works flawlessly. In terms of apartments in Merida, it doesn't get much better than that! :P
There is a supermarket only a 5 minute walk away and there are plenty of cocina economicas (small diners) in the neighborhood where a good (and cheap!) meal can be had. Speaking of meals... Let's talk about dinners at Casa del Cielo Grande. Every night, John and amber cook an absolutely great meal. For a small fee to help with groceries, the guests can join them and I highly recommend they do so. I can't think of the last time I had so many great meals in such a short time. They both love to cook and it shows!
Give this place a try! You won't be dissapointed!

Just got back the other day and miss amber, John, and "the kids" already. Beautiful apt. containing absolutely all the amenities and more! Spotlessly clean, crystal clear pool and immaculate grounds. Privacy and/or partying at its best. Superb food and mean margaritas. Cannot thank you guys enough for everything. A wonderful vacation and priceless new friends, what more could a person ask for :)

We stayed a week in Jan. and a couple of days on our way back from Progreso in Feb. We had the best time. Amber and John are terrific, they invited us into their home and fed us numerous times. We hung out, went to the amazing market in Merida; we felt like it was our home. Great value, good location and perfect host and hostess and so are the dogs, Bonita Banana, Paco, Rosa and lets not forget Clint Eastwood! Merida is a terrific city to explore, a great vibe, but, the best part was meeting John and amber.

Amber & John have created a sweet, tranquil oasis in the heart of Merida's Centro district. Their apartment is actually a separate casita, set way back from the street and totally private. It is fully equipped with every kitchen convenience, cable tv, and a king-size bed that is incredibly comfortable. The casita is immaculate as is the rest of the property which includes a bar, swimming pool, and four of the dearest Chihuahuas on the planet! Amber and John went out of their way to make us feel at home; they even had dinner waiting when we arrived at almost 11 p.m.! (they are great cooks). They are so friendly and helpful, you feel like you're staying with family. And there is no concern about the 'clothing optional' - we chose the clothed option and it was not an issue. This is a wonderful find and we would recommend it without reservation to anyone planning a visit to Merida.

This is one of the best vacations we have ever had. Amber and John go out of their way to make their guests feel at home. Everything for one's comfort and even more is to be found in the apartment, including needles and thread. Our hosts are laid back, interesting and kind people, who did all they could to make our stay worthwhile, even to inviting us to share their Christmas and New Year's Eve fetes with their friends. We were absolutely relaxed, and so able to enjoy this interesting city and its surroundings. We would love to return. What more can we say? Thank you amber, John and "children" for a superior holiday.

We recently returned from a weekend stay at Casa del Cielo Grande. in (the Santiago neighbourhood) Merida. We were impressed with the fresh appearance and cleanliness of the front entrance and throughout the facility. Expats Canadians, John & Amber Klontieg have owned the property since 2008 and spent considerable time and money constantly upgrading. The pool and deck area was cleaned and maintained daily as was the common area. Palms and greenery have added some coolness to Merida's hot sun. The apartment, which was our home for the weekend, was unbelievably equipped with everything imaginable including a veggie steamer!
We soon began to relax and fell under the charm of our hosts and their beautiful setting. Casa del Cielo Grande is well located withinin walking distance of Santiago park, grocery stores and local bakeries.We also enjoyed listening to the stories of moving to and living in Mexico. Although attentative to our needs and requests they also gave us our space and we never felt we were intruding. The pool was refreshingly welcome in Merida's November heat. The apartment is advertised as clothing optional and we were never made to feel uncomfortable about our choice of attire or otherwise. We highly recommend staying here and look forward to a longer stay next time.
Some notable hi-lites are: outside grills for cooking; bar stool swing seats at the Tiki Bar; local birds; cactus garden; several eating areas; poolside showers and washroom; the apartments kingsize bed, John's attention to detail and ambers' good taste. I've been to several 5 star resorts in Mexico, as well as Spain, Portugal, England, Peutro Rico, Costa Rica, Greece, Hawaii, & 5 different cruises...but this is my comfort place! Definately one of my most relaxed vacations with hosts who will visit, talk, help with info, party, or let us enjoy our own space. Loved having our own special ( definately 5 star ) "casita" & pool outside the door, & a great little bar next to that where we enjoyed time with our hosts daily. Even tried kerioke in their home with their Mexican friends. Such a great experiance to be with Canadian locals who were willing to actually introduce us to Mexican locals! Hospitality 2nd to none! A great way to learn more! I hesitate at telling others how great our visit was as I'd like to keep it a secret. If you do visit make sure you ask John if he will cook up his absolutly awesome chilli relenos! I've tried them everywhere I've been where they are on the menu but non compare to Johns! We enjoyed them with J & A, but I also enjoyed them the next day for breakfast and lunch! This was our first trip to Merida. John and amber meet us at the gate and made us feel very welcome from the minute we arrived.The casita was spotless and felt very comfortable. The pool was crystal clear and very inviting. John cleans the pool everyday.
John and amber gave us a wealth of information about Merida on what to see. I would stay here again and again.

Lisa, the space looks empty so I just had to fill it in LOL. You and hubby have been here two times now, and we're looking forward to a 3rd as soon as you can make it. J's margs are still the same and the party atmosphere thrives when you two are here. We always have a hoot spending time with the two of you. This property is absoulty perfect!
It is spotlessly clean and stocked with everything you would need for cooking or relaxing.
John and amber are the perfect host and truly enjoy people. If you dont stay at their place when in Merida you are truly missing out. They are a wealth of knowlege on most anything about the area and will be glad to fill you in on anything you want to know.
We have stayed at this property twice and will not stay anywhere else. It is a outstanding value for a property of this quality.
John keeps the pool spotless as well as the beautiful grounds.
I will be back every chance I get as it is the perfect vacation property as well as the perfect location. (Safe-and wlking distance to everything including Plaza Grande!)
