Milwaukee, WIGreat place for a family gathering
Left on 05/01/2013 for a stay in April 2013
I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a location for a small family party. Our group was made up of three couples and a 6 year old, and there was plenty of space for all. There is plenty of cookware and appliances in the kitchen for those who prefer cooking to dining out - but the local community is within walking distance, and offers many restaurants as well. There is great access to outdoor activities like hiking and fishing, and plenty options if the weather doesn't cooperate.

ILBeautiful Cabin in the Woods
Left on 04/01/2013 for a stay in March 2013
My family and I decided to get away for the weekend and found this cabin on flipkey. Leah, the owner, was very accommodating to our request on such a short notice. She even called us on our way up there to let us know that there was a lot of snow and we may want to purchase boots at the local Walmart if we hadn't brought any. It was so nice of her to inform us so we could be prepared. The cabin had everything we needed. We played many board games, enjoyed the beautiful fireplace,went hiking and walked on the iced covered lake. My family and I had a wonderful bonding mini-vacation. Even though it was cold and rainy when we went, we still had an amazing time. I would definately recommend staying in this cabin. Not only is the cabin beautifully maintained, but the owner is extremely nice.

My family had a great weekend at the Buckhorn Lake Cabin to celebrate my dad's retirement. The cabin itself was beautiful and very comfortable, and we especially enjoyed the wood fireplace. It was a great weekend to get away and have some time to enjoy the outdoors, talk as a family, and have fun together. We also took the opportunity to go cross-country skiing at the nearby Levis Mound Ski Trails. These trails were extremely well-maintained and a beautiful place to ski.
The only drawback to the cabin that we could see was the smell of the water, which other people have also noted. With that exception, this was a fantastic place to stay, and we had a great weekend.Response from Unique Handmade Log Cabin, Lots of Amenities,Lake - 03/25/2013

Not many people are familiar with the many recreational opportunities, and fun things to do in the Black River Falls area. That being said, I belive most people just love relaxing in front of the fire the best. We hope you can come back and enjoy another wonderful season at our cabin. It would be fun to keep track of our guests who experienced all four seasons up here. leah

MinneapolisEmbraced by Pines and Crackling Fire
Left on 12/16/2012 for a stay in December 2012
Surrounded by pine country. Welcoming large cabin--cathedral ceilings, cozy living room with huge fireplace and plenty of handcut wood. Buckhorn lake across the road and Lake arbutus near by. Made homemade meals or as our friends said 5 star cooking--roomy kitchen and dining area. The bedrooms were comfortable and warm. Took a drive to Black River Falls--checked out the old fashioned candy counter in the General Store and a little microbrew, wine and cheese shop and cafe (Orange Moose?). Night of the snowstorm had a beer and pizza (crust is handmade) at the nearby mug in Hatfield close by. A wonderful cabin for friends to share the quiet and peace amidst the pines.
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart's core. Yeats

Milwaukee/MinneapolisSisters and Brothers Weekend
Left on 11/05/2012 for a stay in November 2012
Every fall my sister and her husband, my husband and his brother along with his wife and their children gather for what we simply call "Sister's and Brother's Weekend". It started 4 years ago and each year we search for just the right cabin that will suit our growing family and offer plenty of activity for us to enjoy. We always hope that we find a place that we can return to year after year and finally, I think we have found it!
This cabin has a lot to offer that others do not--indoor game options (ping pong, etc.), a well stocked wood pile for indoor or outdoor cozy fires, optional canoe and kayak rentals and more. The cabin was exceptionally clean and there was not a long list of chores to do when we left.
With the great outdoors beckoning there is no need for TV/internet distractions. We enjoyed paddling our way up and down the flowage, hiked on local trails, and found a county park near by to let our toddler expel his energy!
The owners, Leah and Tim, have taken great pride in building a retreat for themselves and have willfully shared it with the public through rentals...Leah was a great communicator prior to our arrival to make sure our stay would be as perfect as possible.
We plan to return in 2013 for the 5th annual Sister's and Brother's Weekend!Response from Unique Handmade Log Cabin, Lots of Amenities,Lake - 11/11/2012

This was our second time renting Buckhorn Lake Cabin. We are a group of friends who met at a camp in Iowa in the late 60s/early 70s. We get together every 3 to 4 months at different locations in the Midwest. The cabin is ideal for our get togethers. The layout is great with the openness of the kitchen, dining, and family room. Tim and Leah provide plenty of firewood for the fireplace and firepit. We ate only one meal out and were surprised at the great food at "The Mug" in Hatfield - we highly recommend their broasted chicken and pizza. Leah is great to work with; very responsive when setting up the reservation and then throughout the process. We will definitely be back!

Left on 09/30/2012 for a stay in September 2012
This year, I decided to give my family a weekend vacation as the major part of their Christmas present. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. The highlight of it was spending precious time together in a beautiful area of our state, while also enjoying a welcoming and spacious cabin.
This property is so easy to recommend to others, especially since all contact with the owner was friendly and informative. The property was very well maintained and had all the amenities as listed in the description. It was clean and comfy with plenty of firewood furnished for both the outdoor firepit and the indoor fireplace, both of which we thoroughly enjoyed. I appreciated that a stroller, booster chair, and safety gates were provided to use with my 10-month old grandson, as well as lawn chairs, life jackets, and grills for us to use. The owners have truly thought of many conveniences to help guests be comfortable. We didn't even get to use the games provided as the weather was gorgeous.
My sons went fishing two of the days in the canoe we rented from the owner. One caught a Northern which he released, and the other caught a bass from shore. So, no fish fry to cook, but some good, quality time for my sons. It was so amazingly relaxing and peaceful and we hope to return to continue this new "early Christmas" tradition for our family.Response from Unique Handmade Log Cabin, Lots of Amenities,Lake - 10/01/2012

Carbondale, ILA nice getaway
Left on 09/24/2012 for a stay in September 2012
The cabin was very nice, and located in a very secluded region. There is a nice lake adjacent to the cabin for canoeing and kayaking. The cabin itself was spacious, elegant, and consisted of all wood. There is a nice fireplace in the den area as well as a fire pit in the backyard of the cabin. There was wood for both fire pits located on the property. There were bikes and grills both ready for our use; as well as an entire stocked cabin with silverware, plates, utensils, etc. Ping pong table was a plus. Only downfall was the "sulfur" smell to the water. Overall though a great place for a family vacation or friend get together.

Thank-you for your lovely comments. Oh that wonderful sulfur. Our closest neighbor only had to dig 40 feet., but we had to dig 200 feet to get water. What that means is that the water is very healthy to drink because it is so far away from surface pollution such as pesticides from local farms. We test the water through the health department.
The down side, is the sulfur smell. I advise guests to bring drinking water. We supply a gallon of water in the refrigerator to start off with. We also tell guests that vacationers spend hundred's of dollars to go to sulfur spring resorts, and we have that amenity at the cabin. Your skin feels softer after showers and baths!

What a cute, clean cabin with the "Up North" charm. We especially loved having all the activities provided for the entire family, especially the ping pong and foosball tables. Left on 01/27/2012 for a stay in January 2012
Arrived at the cabin after an afternoon of skiing and tubing at nearby Bruce Mound, a short ten minute drive away. Stepping into the cabin, that fresh wood smell, the beautiful layout, the peace of a quiet home, a relaxing relief to our drive up from Chicago. From the moment we got the fire started, the weekend just got better and better. From the children to the adults, we all found things to keep us busy or relaxed, depending on what you were looking for. The kitchen was more than accomodating to our needs, everything we needed to pull off all meals of the day were available. A 50 yard walk to the lake the next morning provided us the opportunity to shovel off an ice skating rink for all of us. Overall, the weekend wasn't anything short of amazing.

Left on 01/17/2012 for a stay in January 2012
We stayed here for 3 nights in January & had a great time- the kitchen has everything you'll need or want- plenty of pots, pans, crock pot, big stuff, little stuff, they have it all.
The fireplace is great, and warms the cabin up very nicely- better than watching TV any time & they provide plenty of firewood, right on the porch so we didn't come close to running out- towels, linens & extra pillows/blankets were plentiful- very nice cabin & private setting with evergreens all around.
We went to Hatfield to watch the Packers game at "The Mug" and the locals were all very friendly & the service was great- Nice place, well run, well stocked- can't think of anything that was lacking, and would recommend this place to anyone.

I shared an exceptional weekend at this cabin with several dear girlfriends from near and far recently. The dusting of snow the night before we arrived made it even more magical and enjoyable. As mentioned by other reviewers, the cabin is extremely welcoming and comfortable and lacks absolutely nothing! It is so well stocked and cared for, and feels like an old shoe the minute you walk inside the front door. We kept a fire stoked the entire weekend long in that gorgeous stone fireplace, enjoyed walks around the lake. ate some fabulous meals, laughed a lot and toured some of the sights nearby. It was a perfect getaway that I would highly recommend to others. Don't miss staying at this incredible home - it's truly one in a million!

This is a lovely home and evokes just what you imagine when you think of a log cabin in the woods. It is clean and well-stocked, and it has a wonderful atmosphere for gatherings of family and friends. You can walk the gorgeous grounds, hike or go to the frozen lake, or you can hang out in front of the stone fireplace and absorb the ambiance. It's hand-crafted and tastefully decorated; and it's obvious the owner is concerned about guests having everything they need. It's clean, new and nicely appointed. We enjoyed the peace and quiet and didn't want to leave.

Our extended family spent a week at Buckhorn Lake Cabin and had a phenomenal time. The cabin was just the right size for our 8 adults and 2 toddlers. We could have fit more, too! The cabin was well stocked with the kitchen utensils and pots and pans we needed to feel right at home. We cooked and ate like we were on vacation! There were a few intense games of Scrabble and fires inside and out. The absence of TV was wonderful and everyone brought their instruments and song requests for a few jam sessions in our pajamas. We explored all of the state and county parks around us and when we'd had enough nature, we hit the Mug for some pickle chips, cheese curds and buckets of shorties. Our 2 year old called it the "Benture house" (adventure house) and as we left she said, "I go back my benture house". We hope to be back!
