Additional Location Information
Olizy-sur-Chiers is a rural village with 170 inhabitants located in the French Ardennes and lies on the border of the departments Champagne Ardennes and Meuse. An ideal starting point for hiking in the beautiful wooded hilly landscape, rich in streams, rivers and springs.
A region steeped in history: the castle of Sedan and Bouillon, the Citadel of Montmédy, the cathedral of Reims and in Mont-devant-Sassey a beautiful Romanesque church (11th century).
Interesting cities nearby are Reims (Champagne and the Jeanne d'Arc cathedral)), Verdun, Metz and Nancy and Orval with its Abbey (and its famous beer).
The history of World War I and II is just around the corner: Verdun and the last fortress of the Maginot Line.
The following activities are also possible in the vicinity: golf, tennis, kayaking, a visit to the European Beer Museum and the marina in Stenay, the felt Museum in Mouzon, hiking, karting, mountain biking, horseback riding or a shopping visit to Sedan, Verdun or Charleville-Les Mezieres. Douzy has a nice swimming pool located on open water.
In Sedan is the largest castle in Europe located, in Montmédy you will find an impressive castle, and at 5 km away in Ville-la-Ferte the last fortress of the Maginot line. Verdun is located at a distance of 45 km.
Those interested in military history can indulge themselves: La Grande Guerre (WWI) had its apotheosis in this area and in Sedan in 1870 the Franco-Prussian war was settled.
The weekly markets are Friday morning in Stenay and Saturday in Sedan. In the summer there are plenty of ‘brocantes’ or 'vide grenier' in the immediate vicinity. And on Sunday the hypermarkets are open in the morning.
In a hour drive you are in Luxembourg, Reims or Metz with a branch of the Pompidou Centre and the Smurfs Park, the Euro Space Center and two hours away from Paris, EuroDisney and Brussels. From Sedan the TGV 'speeds' you to Paris.
The region has many excellent restaurants at very affordable prices with regional cuisine.
For example, in Le Boucher des Garcons in Stenay the locals lunch with a three-course menu (Menu du Jour) served for only 12.50 Euro.
In Carignan you will find La Gourmandière : a restaurant 'traditionnel gastronomique spécialité cuisine des Ardenne' cooking at Michelin level.
In addition, the supply in the hypermarkets unsurpassed!
