      Didnt want to leave!

Left on 07/21/2012 for a stay in July 2012

Booked through Sykes which was very smooth booking online.
Finding the cottage was slightly difficult as its on the main road and not actually on Jubilee Place!!! There is a cottage across the road that stands back - there are huge plant pots with rocks in front on the standing. This is the parking space for Merle Cottage ( there is a photo in the porchway once you get into the cottage - showing the parking space). At the same side of the parking space is a board "Eggs for sale" which can be purchased from the bungalow behind the cottage.
There was milk in the fridge ( which the caretaker had told me would be ) and a vase of fresh flowers on the table. The garden is well kept as is the cottage. The photos are as it is and already we miss it - only left this morning lol.
There is constant hot water and a lovely log burner, which we used first couple of nights.
Whilst the cottage is clean - there was some dust and a few cobwebs but nothing major.
The kitchen is well equipped with everything you could possibly need - reading the visitors book - there had been people who had stayed at the cottage on more than a couple of occasions and one or two over Christmas and New Year.
Double bedroom has a very comfy bed - the furniture is oldy worldy but lovely. There are a couple of old newspapers in the top drawer of the big chest of drawers in this bedroom - which makes interesting reading.
Second bedroom has 2 single beds in and are comfy with wardrobe and drawers.
Bathroom has loo, sink and bath with shower over and I loved the pebble tiles in there.
Towels and bed linen are included in the price - I usually take my own towels but didnt this time as didnt have any room in the car lol Towels at the cottage were lovely and soft.
For a cottage it was very spacious - I know because I have lived in many and Merle Cottage is lovely.
My son (17yo) and I loved the location. Both our dogs, a 10mth old beagle and 7yo lab absolutely loved the garden.
There are walks starting literally from the gate and we walked every day. This was our very first walking holiday and shall book again.
The cottage is double glazed and we didnt have a problem with the main road - I slept with the window open all nights and slept like a log!
Im not adding any photos as they are like the ones showing the cottage as it really is.
      Highly Recommended.

      Very Comfortable Stay.

Left on 03/02/2012 for a stay in December 2011

The cottage was just as described in brochure a little bit dated inside but that added to its charachter. We were there for christmas week we had our lunch sat in fromt of the open fire and then played games round the table, everything we wanted in the kitchen as of the whole house, the garden was safe for our dogs and the walks from the front door were fantastic, the village was friendly and very close for essential goods. We really enjoyed our stay we will be booking again for this christmas but will probably try a diffrent location as we like trying diffrent places.

The ideal location for a rural break

Left on 12/02/2011 for a stay in October 2011

We have visited Merle cottage on three occasions now, so it is a known quantity for us. Its location is ideal for walkers and dog owners, lying within a short distance of riverbank walks along the Tees and longer routes on the hill, including a section of the Pennine Way. Middleton itself is a friendly place with a small Co-op, a couple of pubs, several cafes and a chippy - the kind of place where visitors are greeted rather than ignored. The cottage is clean, well-maintained and furnished to a good standard. Its enclosed garden makes it highly suitable for a pet. We have very happy memories of our visits and will no doubt return next year.

      comfortable

Left on 12/20/2009 for a stay in February 2009

Service from Sykes was excellent and we would definitely use Sykes again.

We liked the cottage. It was very old fashioned - like a time warp in parts BUT it was spotlessly clean and provided everything you would need. There was plenty of room. It was decorated and well equipped.

Location - good for many walks in the penines etc - but Middleton in Teesdale - the main pub was closed down and the other one did not provide food. There was the hotel. The shop was good.

Liked best - the cottage with the enclosed garden (a very nice garden). Liked least - the amenities for eating out.

Relaxing place to stay in Middleton-in-Teesdale

Left on 12/11/2009 for a stay in June 2009

This cottage is comfortable and cosy and has everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Some of the decoration is a little dated but the kitchen and bathroom had obviously been done up recently and the cottage is great value for its size. Middleton-in-Teesdale is a lovely village with a good restuarant and a couple of reasonable pubs plus a Co-op which stays open late. It's an excellent location for walking and there are lots of interesting places nearby to visit. Only real downside was the fact that the cottage is right next to an A road which was quite busy at times so even though there is a small garden you could not really enjoy sitting out in it.
