Description from the owner
Great views, wrap around deck, close to world famous vistas and trails to hike or off road. Can sleep up to 12 guests.
Welcome to our Moab cabin. We love the great outdoors and adventure in the Moab area. By fact that you are here, we know you do as well. We tried camping with tents and sleeping bags when we were younger, and while, we respect those who enjoy camping we discovered that the creature comforts or lack thereof made the difference in our partnership with Nature. At our last family camp out and after burning a hole in our new eight man tent and burning my hand with our new gas lantern scrambling inside to escape a Summer rai...Read more

Available for short (3 days 3 nights) or long (1-2 week) vacation stays. 1700 sq. feet of modern convenience but still a cabin.

Click on our blog link below to view more photos and excerpts from other guests. Call or email today to check availability as the cabin generally reserves 4-6 weeks in advance. We welcome you to the area and Susie and I are genuinely pleased that you are considering the cabin for your get away. We promise you wonβt be disappointed, on the contrary you will have a vacation to remember for life.
The road up to the cabin is a county maintained road that winds up the canyon walls with no guardrails and is beautiful and fun to the adventurous westerner but can be scary to the uninitiated traveler on country roads. This 15 mile drive will take between 40-45 minutes, more if you stop to take pictures. The 1/2 mile private lane off the main road into the cabin is a dirt road and not maintained. Depending upon weather that means it can be rutted and or muddy. Low profile cars such as a Prius are not recommended. 4 wheel drive is not necessary but higher clearance vehicles are better suited for this lane. In good weather we drive our Camry there with no problem but all should be forewarned that this half mile lane is a dirt road subject to weather conditions.

Durham, North CarolinaIllusions of Grandeur
Left on 04/04/2013 for a stay in March 2013
The greatest compliment a guest can make is to say the descriptions and photos were exactly how we found the property to be. Sadly, that is not the case with this Moab cabin. John, the owner, suffers from both sins of omission and sins of grandeur. The 13-mile distance from Moab to the cabin is described as a 30-minute drive on a gravel road. Before even driving to the cabin, the caretaker who lives full-time near the cabin texted us to say it's a 45-minute drive and to come late in the day because we probably wouldn't want to return to town. Was she ever right. The treacherous, narrow Sand Flats Road winds around hairpin turns and sheer drop-offs with no guardrails. It is a beautiful drive through the Slickrock Biking area, but you'll be lucky to reach speeds of 20 mph on the top portion. Once you reach the half-mile turnoff to the cabin, prepare to slow to 5 mph as the 12-inch ruts and protruding boulders will bring you to a stand-still. The road has not been properly graded (even with snowmelt) nor covered with crush and run. Once we arrived at the cabin, we quickly realized that the photos with views and things to do just a 'walk from the cabin' or 'nearby' were misleading. You do see the gorgeous LaSal Mt. range from the front door, but a huge storage shed mars the view from the front deck. The photo of a sunset on Moab rim and view of the Canyonlands from the cabin is not true. The cabin is a 15 minute drive from the hoodoo, not just on its backside. Castle Valley Overlook is not 'by the cabin' and there are no hiking trails on the property. We expected a destination place and sadly were mislead. You must drive to everything. It is the perfect place if you're a mountain biker and want to play in the Slickrock area. We wanted to explore arches and Canyonlands and had to factor in a 90 minute drive, along with driving to the parks. Canyonlands alone is an extra hour. The cabin itself is portrayed correctly though I'd say it sleeps 4 adults comfortably. It is not deluxe accommodations. It was dusty and musty smelling, especially the bedding. The propane heater which only heats the upstairs went out so we suffered through two 20 degree nights. However, if it's a campfire you want, total silence, and a gazillion stars, then this is the place for you. One step up from camping...and a family of mice will keep you company.

Owner
Good morning Patty, while grateful for you taking the time to review the cabin I was disappointed that you failed to mention a couple of critical items. First, of my own volition I refunded a portion of your payment because of the hassles you had with the heater and did so happily.
Second and in my mind the biggest thing you failed to mention is the correspondence you and I had back in september of 2012 when you initially inquired about the cabin and in your own words from an email you sent on September 19 2012 "Thanks for letting me know.
I believe you have given me all the points in our first conversation when you tried to talk me out of renting your place. However, I will call you."
As you will recall I warned you of the conditions of the weather, roads and being the first guests of the season after the cabin has been closed for nearly 4 months of winter. In both written emails and our phone conversations I was very clear to explain the conditions you would encounter in Mid March. Every single photo posted anywhere on our listings is labeled exactly as is. None are fake. Nearly all the trails for biking and hiking on or near the property were under snow when you came and I explained this possibility in our earlier correspondence. The cabin was sealed tight, winterized just prior to your arrival and as far as mice are concerned, did you see a mouse or just signs of mice somewhere on the property? It is a country home. We regularly monitor and take action for pest control in every season. Early spring may reflect sign of pests but certainly no one is going to share the cabin with a family of mice. Finally, I state here publicly for all who will read, the drive up to the cabin is a 40-45 minute drive on a county maintained road with absolute gorgeous views. Granted it is a void of guardrails and has hair pin turns and follows the canyon up to the cabin. That is one of the main reasons we bought the place. The details and photos of the cabin are all accurate. On our list of things to do is eventually move the storage shed to a more discreet location. I feel your review is a blindside because I have reviewed our correspondence and feel I was absolutely upright in describing the circumstances of reserving a mid-march time frame at the cabin. Readers of your review are left to think it was not as advertised. They didn't see my emails to you describing the parameters of the time you wanted to come. I tried talking you into an April reservation when issues with road conditions, availability of trails, cold etc. would not be an issue, but you insisted you and your partner were hearty folk and could handle it. To any reader of this review, I encourage you to call or write me for an accurate description of the experience you will have at the cabin. -

Want a unique experience in the back country of Moab? Then this may be the place for you. This cabin is in a beautiful location away from everything so you can see the real stars at night. It is just down the road from a breathtaking view of Castle Valley. It is near to many adventure roads for 4x4s, motorcycles or mountain biking and hiking. John, the owner, is very nice, but a bit disorganized. After setting the date and sending the deposit to him, he never sent anymore information, dates or requests for payment. I had to contact him to find out when to pay him again. John doesn't disclose just exactly how far out this place is. He states it is within 30 minutes of Moab. Not!!! It is 13 miles from Moab on roads that have some absolutely beautiful views, but get progressively worse and should require 4x4 to get there. It would have been nice if we were told ahead of time the condition of the road and just how far away it is. Don't take any nice vehicle out there. It made it a very, very long drive to come and go with activities we wanted to do in and around Moab. The cabin is sorely in need of maintenance, repair and a good thorough cleaning. Farland, the caretaker, lives close by and is readily available, but leaves you be if you want. You will be sharing the cabin with a large family of mice. We met some every morning in the kitchen. Some sort of ash fell from the vaulted ceiling every time we turned on the ceiling fan and got all over us and our stuff. The beds were clean, except the pull outs that had mice droppings throughout. The towels were clean, but we had to clean the bathrooms before we used them. The kitchen was relatively clean and very well stocked. We did enjoy sitting around the fire out back our last night. Depending on what you can overlook, you can make it a memorable experience, but the price you pay is way too much for the accommodations and distance.
Response from John Lundberg - 05/19/2012
Owner
Hi Mary Lou, while I cringed as I read your review, I am appreciative of the feedback. Farland did tell me of the mice, the first we have had this year, and she has set traps and we believe we got them all. Spring came a bit late and so did they. (please keep in mind it is a country home) No excuse for any droppings however and Farland has taken steps to check that. As far as disorganized I have to agree. It is amazing how complex scheduling guests, maintenance, taxes, inspections, and assorted requests becomes with such a property. As a one man operation at this end I need to get some help with the administration of all this as the use of the cabin has grown exponentially over the last year. I believe it comes across that way. I knew that we had spoken over the phone however so assumed you had all you were wanting. I will make an effort to contact the guests prior to arrival to make sure. The distance from town is 13 miles and I do it in 30 minutes but I am familiar with the road. it is a county maintained road but no doubt is not for the faint of heart as it winds its way up the mountain. Most but obviously not all determine this to be an asset not a liability. As far as price I will reach out to you and offer a portion of credit/refund . It is not our intention to have anyone feel slighted. So thank you for your feedback, we will address each one, except the roads.

Our family of 9 spent spring break in this great cabin. We brought our trailer with all of our dirt bikes and atv's. We also had another pick up and there was plenty of room to park everything. This cabin is located close the several trails and has amazing views everywhere you look! We had plenty of room to spread out and relax after a day of riding.

Having not been invited to the royal wedding (that's it with us and he royals), we took off for Utah instead. A bit different from london except, despite a 15 mile drive up the mountain to the cabin, it was still quicker to get home in the evenings after another tame day out. Not. From the 2 lane blacktop through the big country to the martian landscape of the needles, the whole experience was awesome. Moab was full of character(s) - I'm sure ZZ top and all his brothers were in town that week - and the cabin felt like being out on the frontier.
We want to go back. Yee hah.

Hi Drew, thanks for the review. As I recall you hiked, climbed, explored and went places many of us familiar with the area have not gone. To the top a pinnacle for example. Post that photo so folks can see where you climbed.

We wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at your Moab Cabin. We found that the whole family can have fun exploring Moab's backcountry. Whether we were on dirt-bikes or mountain bikes we were never at a loss for a new trail to test our skills. We even found time to absorb the awe inspiring beauty in arches National Park with several incredible hikes. The cozy log cabin was a perfect out of the way peaceful retreat after a hard day of adventure. While enjoying a home cooked meal we marveled at the forever views out one window and mountain splendor out another window. Although the sunsets were spectacular the crystal clear starry nights by the campfire provided the encore. We found the Cabin easily accomodated our family and even met my wife's approval for being clean. On the way home, we were already planning our return to the Cabin and Moab. I feel truly blessed that our family was able to enjoy our time together at your Cabin. We appreciated John's willingness to work with us and accomodate our schedule. The whole experience has put the Cabin at the top of our list for a vacation.

What a phenomenal getaway spot ... there are so many reasons I loved this place. The cabin is so inviting and home-y with plenty of space and great amenities that contributed to a relaxing and rejuvenating stay. I loved the firepit ... hanging out roasting marshmallows while being with people I love. I loved the overall feeling of the cabin. And the property is incredible with easy access to beautiful hikes and jogging areas. The location is very conducive to communing with nature and getting away from the rush of life. I look forward to the time when I can return to this haven!

I loved this trip to Moab. We were close enough to the city to be able to buy groceries, go the movies, go rafting or swimming, and also to use the aTV on the many trails around the outskirts of Moab. There were also beautiful quiet moments hiking, biking, or just sitting and enjoying the cooler air in the mountains without the hustle and bustle of the people in town.

Our family took a family adventure vacation to the Cabin in June 2008. My son had just graduated from high school and my daughter turned 16 while we were there. We hiked everything- Arches, Canyonlands, Lasalle Mountains and "the neighborhood"--we went out to eat and cooked stupendous meals at the cabin. We mountain biked with Rim Tours. We befriended the ubiquitous and wonderful Farland. We lived and played together 24-7 in the most comfortable unique home one could ask for. We matched world cup soccer and climbed a mountain face with locals. We marveled at the sights, the sounds, the stars and the drive to and from the cabin. We always felt the love and presence in spirit of the owners who encouraged us to enjoy the love of their lives-this place unique onto itself--the Moab Cabin. I couldn't have been more pleased with our stay. Thank you Lundbergs for sharing your treasure! Your friends, Bruce, Karen, Scott and Nikki Schoenberger, Toledo, Ohio

Bruce, thank you for your kind words, we appreciate them. We fondly remember when your daughter turned 16 and still liked the cabin experience. We feel that if teenagers like the place we have hit a home run. Best of luck to your family. We hope to see you again some time.

I absolutely loved my stay at John's cabin with my Dad!!! The location of the cabin is unmatched in the area and the views are spectacular! The cabin includes a/C which came in handy over our stay, the satellite television was great for after biking and hiking, and the biking in the area is great because on the roads you get very little motorized traffic! The best part about it is how quiet it gets, you literally could here a pin drop! I would sincerly recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a quiet getaway, or anyone needing a basecamp for their adventures in Moab, Utah (being halfway between the La Sals and Moab.) John you have a great place! Ryan Haydon

My family and I absolutely loved our stay at this cabin! Incredible views right from the cabin as well as many many more within short distances. Great dirt bike riding, mountain biking, hiking, sightseeing, and relaxing. And the sky at night there, I almost forgot how many stars there really are until I saw the sky at this cabin. No light pollution, just pure space. We plan on returning to this cabin again without a doubt. 11 out of 10 stars.

The drive up the hill from Moab was spectacular. From world class red-rock scenery to high elevation aspen groves. While it is too toasty to enjoy the heat of Moab, this cabin offered a pleasant cool day of relaxation at 7000 feet elevation. The lakes and trails and forests that surround this cabin are astounding. Easy drive to arches NP and Canyonlands NP. I want to go back again with my wife and five daughters. It's the vacation of a life time. Not ritzy, but clean, cool, comfortable and gorgeous.
