    Additional Location Information

Molteno was founded in 1874 and named after Sir John Molteno, the first prime minister of the Cape Colony. The area experiences warm summers and chilly, dry winters, with occasional snowfalls. The town is situated high in the Stormberg Mountains and is approximately 150 km from the country's only ski resort, Tiffindell.

Molteno is home to Ouma Rusks (click here for the Ouma Rusks story) and the Stormberg biltong factory.

The town has several botanical gardens, a monument to Queen Victoria, and an historic library built from local stone.

The Molteno Museum is located in the stone library building and portrays the history of the town and its surrounds. It contains a range of artifacts, from stone-age tools to Khoisan, Xhosa and Voortrekker relics including a large collection of vintage guns. It also houses local war relics from the Boer War, and a display of pioneering historical photography from the region, the "Lomax Collection".

Also of historical interest are the blockhouses that are located in the area, dating from the Boer War, and the Stormberg Battlefields.

The Johannes Meintjes Memorial Room in the Molteno High School houses an important collection of more than 70 art works of the well known artist, author and historian, Johannes Meintjes (1923 - 1980), and is perhaps the most representative single collection of Johannes Meintjes’ creative output.

The town has one of the oldest railway stations in South Africa - now officially reopened after being closed for repairs. The station lies on the main line from East London, inland to Johannesburg. This line was actually planned and begun by the same John Molteno after whom the town is named, but the railway only reached the town in 1884.

There are numerous San rock paintings in the surrounding mountain ranges. The area around the town offers ample opportunity to view rock art, fossils and stone age tools uncovered in caves and diggings close to Molteno. There are also three extinct volcanoes in the vicinity.

There are 4X4 trails in the mountains and the nearby Molteno Dam offers water-skiing, canoeing and trout-fishing. Mark and Russell from Ruslington will gladly pack you a picnic hamper should you wish to enjoy time at the dam.

Mrs de Wet from the dairy farm in Onverwacht will gladly take visitors around. Mark or Russell at Ruslington will assist in making arrangements for a visit.

The bowling green directly opposite Ruslington holds bowling tournaments which are very popular with visitors to the area.

The well known artist, Eric Oswald Eatwell, lives and works in Molteno for the Allen Wilson Ministries, putting the needs of the poor above his own. Alongside is one of his famous works "Autumn", painted in oils in the post impressionist style.

A car is recommended when staying in Molteno and there is safe, secure parking on-site at Ruslington B & B.
