A wonderful spot, tucked away from the town. Quiet, beautiful, and homey. Nicely furnished with the bare necessities for cooking. The hot tub was where we spent most of our time. We kept meaning to take the canoe out but by the time we got done with our Russian River rafting trip we didn't want to spend any more time in a boat. The grill on the deck was great for dinner one night, the kitchen was adequate for everything else. The owner was incredibly friendly and accommodating. And the dog loved it, so all in all it was a great experience and I would definitely consider going back.
Ps the river is about 300 yards away from the house through the backyard.Response from Russian River Vacation Homes - 10/22/2012

Even though you didn't get a chance to take the canoe out, it sounds like you made great use of your time at the River!

We received very good service from Russian River Vacation Homes. Everything went smoothly. We love the area and were looking forward to being on the river. The house has a very large, open backyard that is very pretty and restful. The apartment is pleasant and appointed nicely (simple but interesting) and it has everything you need. It would be particularly good if you have kids because you have a kitchen and an extra bedroom with twin beds. But for a couple "just getting away", I think it is a bit costly since it is really just someone's basement fixed-up nicely. In other words, low ceilings, a bit musty and you hear the sounds from the upstairs. That is O.K. with us since it is a river home but not at that cost. We thought we could even out expenses since a kayak was offered and then we would not have to rent one. But it was quite difficult for my husband and I to carry this heavy canoe down a hill and then hard for us as novices to get in the boat while it was in deep water. (We actually flipped it over and got all wet) Also, it was advertized as a large beach but actually there is not much of one right there. Better to rent your kayaks up the way on the beach. In general, in spite of all this, it was a pleasant experience and the deck is very pretty and relaxing. I would return if the price were lower but I think she is asking a little too much money for the amenities and total ambiance.

Hello -
Thank you for the review - we love getting feedback from guests and a chance to reply! We work hard to make the descriptions of our homes as honest as possible (on our website) so expectations and reality are similarly matched. We don't want anyone surprised when they reach a house!
Kathleen's River Garden is the lower unit of an upper/lower duplex and it is our most economically priced home to reflect this. Thankfully, Kathleen has been in hospitality for years and most folks don't have issues with the noise from upstairs. Access along the river changes annually, seasonally and sometimes weekly depending on weather, summer dams and the release of water up river, so the beach tends to change as well. The photo on our site shows the beach at that point, but we can't guarantee that it will look like this every time. It's a bummer we all live with.
Some of my best memories from summer trips to the river as a kid were the contests of seeing who would tip their canoe first and who would stay dry the longest... And who could get their canoe upright and floating again the most quickly! I use a kayak now, but I love those old heavy canoes - usually more stable!

I rented this cabin with a couple friends and we stayed for 2 nights. It's in a great location right on the river and the house itself is very nice. The inside is cute and cozy. The kitchen and living room are just large enough. It's clean. There's even laundry. And the best part was the beautiful patio which is quiet and faces the river, and has a nice hot tub and eating area. And lastly, it came with a kayak which was a bonus! I would definitely stay here again!

Great property, the hot tub is a great bonus to the site. The private beach with the canoe is another great bonus to this site. We did not expect to be so close to the Landlord, who lives upstairs. Though she was very sweet and helpful making our stay pleasant.

our check in was ver smooth, the house was perfect for our family of four. Our girls loved sharing a room and hot tub. the weather was fantastic - 85' days and cool clear nights. Waking up to foggy mornings helped us enjoy coffee and games. the quaint house was very relaxing. We are looking forward to our next visit.

We had a wonderful and relaxing weekend at Kathleen's. Laid out by the river (about a 60 second walk from the back door), went tubing, used the hot tub at night, grilled on the back porch... couldn't have been nicer! Kathleen was very welcoming and sweet. We will definitely be back.

My daughter, her two dogs, and I had a very relaxing 4 nights. Kathleen was very warm and welcoming and provided her newspaper each day. We loved the deck, the hot tub, the lawn and the dogs enjoyed the river. It would have been perfect if the surrounding trees were 10' shorter so we could have had more sun.

Left on 05/08/2011 for a stay in January 2010
I stayed here with my husband, my mother, and our dog for a MLK weekend wine tasting. Both the apartment and the wine tasting weekend were fantastic. The apartment is the above-ground basement of a house, and has a beautiful view of the backyard and river.
The two bedrooms were very nice, and there were plenty of towels for the whole family. Our dog loved exploring the extensive backyard. It was reasonably close the wineries, but far enough away to be quite and not overrun even on a holiday weekend.
The only issue we had was finding the house the first time. The street numbers are not in order, and they are hard to see. -

Hello,
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay at Kathleen's River Garden... We are very up front in letting folks know that it is the lower unit of a duplex and the owner lives upstairs. I actually think this is a cute place for a quick get away! And the rates reflect the fact that this home has an unusual layout and some shared yard space.
Guests at Kathleen's do have their own hot tub, entrance, canoe in the summer, and so on...
And, like many of the quirky river homes, Kathleen's was built pre-1950 and floors are not perfectly level... Most of us river-folk are pretty used to it and some of us even love it! I never have to close my fridge door by hand...

Spending 3 relaxing evenings @ Kathleen's riverfrontage unit was what the doctor ordered. Kicking back in the deck chairs overlooking the river, tossing balls in the expansive yard for my german shepherd puppy, & kayaking on the Russian River was truly a delight! There is nothing like the Russian River area.

We stayed in Kathleen's River garden unit and we absolutely loved it. It was the most peaceful and tranquil week of my life. If you need a break from reality - this is the place, the river is you backyard and it has a bank to sit on and watch the water flow. A couple of very good romantic restaurants about a block away and beautiful hike every morning, it was wonderful.

We had a great time. We were able to cook a couple of meal at home and went out to some great places walking distance from there. The only problem was the owners live above you so if you or they were loud it would be a problem. But it worked out fine for us. Our teenagers really enjoyed the canoe.

This riverfront property is gorgeous and is in a great location. The owner was extremely nice and accommodating so, it is difficult to complain. But, in fairness to future renters, I thought the rental was very noisy. The property description is a bit misleading. I consider a "duplex" to be 2 units - side by side. This rental is similar to a basement level in-law apartment with the owner's house above. There seems to be no insulation in the ceiling because you could hear extremely loud foot traffic above. Because I live in the city and am constantly surrounded by noise, I look forward to a good night's sleep when vacationing. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case.
