The apartment was spacious and full of lovely objets and paintings. Very close to downtown, yet quiet (except for the crowd upstairs who were like thundering elephants.) The building is being renovated at this time, so there was a lot of dust and the apartment was not as clean as it should have been. In fact, we left early because my wife has allergies to dust and could not tolerate the amount of dust in the flat. The stairwells also could use some cleaning. We never met Oleg, but we did have his wonderful bagels. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is liveable. There is free parking which is a minor miracle in downtown Montreal. It would have been nice to have been told that when you turn on the a/c and the microwave at the same time, the fuse will blow! Overall, a pleasant experience, but the place needs some serious cleaning.

Manchester, United KingdomLovely apartment in historic area, close to everything
Left on 03/16/2013 for a stay in February 2013
Partner, adult daughter and myself stayed here for 3 nights in February 2013. Oleg welcomed us with delicious bagels and there were other essentials we could use - coffee, jam etc. We liked the layout of the apartment with its dark polished wood floors and exposed brick walls and the bedrooms were both comfortable. We enjoyed walking down to atwater market and also had a day up the mountain, (again we walked as it was a clear, sunny but cold day). It was only 5 minutes to the nearest Metro station (Lionel Groulx). We got the taxi from the airport, but if we returned, we'd get the airport bus and walk up from Lionel Groulx metro. Apartment close to city centre. Great to stay in an authentic historic part of the city rather than in an anonymous hotel room, and so much more flexible. We'd be happy to stay at Oleg's apartment again, if we return to Montreal.

Left on 02/25/2013 for a stay in February 2013
The perfect place to stay, to start with Oleg's warm and friendly welcome, and a most appreciated treat of bagels and cream cheese. Tea and coffee and other "essentials" were at our disposal in the cupboards, so were toiletry items. Plenty of towels too, and a very comfortable bed. The living area is spacious and very cosy, the flat is well heated, the water very hot, and there are books and board games (and a TV), and house plants. Lovely stylish furniture, beautiful glasses in the cabinet, all contribute to the homely feel. We truly felt at home, and loved to spend time in the flat. Internet worked perfectly. The location is great, 4 mins to the commercial centre and the Green metro line, and 6-7 mins to the Orange line, and buses all around. Yet the flat is in a pretty tree lined, quiet side street with lovely old houses. Perfect! We'd definitely come back, at any season.

Oleg is a wonderful vacation rental owner, full of information and willing to share his knowledge with guests. He met us at the apartment when we arrived and made sure we were comfortable. The second day he delivered fresh bagels to our door. The apartment is bright and cheerful and cozy even when it's cool or rainy outside. Lots of skylights and windows help to let in the natural light. Warm wood floors and antiques make the apartment feel quite homey. Amenities include free wifi and fun touches like live plants indoors and on the balcony. Very close to the atwater and Lionel-Groulx metro stations which can take you all over the city. We used the metro frequently so we didn't have to fight the busy downtown traffic. But on those occasions when we drove, we were able to get to the highways very quickly and easily for out of town journeys to Mont Tremblant and other destinations. Also close to some of the "underground city" to explore shopping when the weather is cold and wet, a short walk to many restaurants as well as the atwater market and local groceries. If you bring a car, there is usually a free parking place behind the building or optional on-street parking. A very good location from which to explore Montreal, giving you a lot of space to spread out and much less expensive than a hotel. Plus you can make your own meals to accommodate dietary needs and save a few dollars too.

New Paltz, New YorkLittle gem nestled in central locale
Left on 10/25/2012 for a stay in October 2012
Based upon Trip advisor and our familiarity with Montreal we chose the Rue Souvenir location. In the midst of an urban neighborhood this amply tree-lined street offers a tremendous amount of privacy and quietude, yet is incredibly centric in terms of proximity to most everything you'd wish to do in Montreal. The two bedroom apt., albeit quirky in its' decor, is at the same time incredibly comfortable and homey. We were two couples on this trip and the second bedroom was too small for our friends, hence I would advise that the apt. be for either one couple or a couple with a child.
Far and away, one of the most compelling argument to stay in this apartment is the owner, Oleg de Vreeze. Here is someone quick to lend a helping hand, readily available to offer knowledgeable advice and full of light-hearted humor. Without Oleg's urging, we would have missed out on the opportunity to experience take-out from the famous Schwartz's Deli and it's mind-blowing "Poutine"...Funny aside, when Oleg first asked if I knew 'poutine', I thought he was referring to Putin, the Russian president...Lol.
Even after our return home his assistance continued. My wife discovered that she'd left her Ipad charger behind, and Oleg was on it immediately, mailing it back to us asap.
Again, the location of apartment is ideal...a two minute walk to the atwater Metro Station, a five minute walk down to the renowned atwater Farmers Market and easy walking distance to lots of interesting places including Westmount neighborhood, the Fine art Museum, McGill University, Ste. Catherine botiques...all that you would ask for.
Bottom line, is I would recommend this apartment to anyone wishing an earthier, Montreal living experience. -

Wonderful hosts, great value, great location
Left on 09/02/2012 for a stay in August 2012
From a utility, convenience & value standpoint, our family of four (2 teenagers) were very happy to have rented this apartment instead of staying at a hotel.
Firstly, the hosts were very gracious. Oleg met us and helped us with our luggage up the steep stairs. We called when we thought we were an hour away but were delayed by another hour in traffic, but Oleg stayed until we arrived. Luda came by the next day with a bag of wonderful fresh Montreal bagels. Luda also came by when we check out and gladly help with our luggage down the stairs.
You get plenty of space for everybody to stretch out. The convenience of the kitchen allows for flexibility for meals. Location is walking distance from grocery store and shops and restaurants.
The apartment is very very clean despite being an old building. Furniture is comfortable and warm & charming. Kitchen has all the basic utensils. The hosts has lots of basic stuff like coffee, spices, condiments, olive oil, butter, paper towels, etc for us to start. They also provide lots of information about grocery store and restaurants in the area.
The apartment have a few deficiencies but nothing that is annoyingly inconvenient. So despite these, I would still recommend this rental for the value and gracious hosts.
a) The front door lights might be on a timer but it seems to be off as it did not turn on when it was dark in the evening and did not turn off in the morning when bright.
b) There was a bit too much stuff in the hallway stairs to the apartment on second floor. It could use a cleanup.
c) The air conditioner is in the kitchen only, but it was sufficient to cool the apartment in august. We were comfortable to sleep at night albeit we need to keep the bedroom doors open to get the cool air into the room.
d) Water pressure in the shower is extremely weak.Unfortuately, they said they have tried everything to fix it but it is out of their control given.
But I reiterate that for the cost that you'd pay, these weren't too much of an annoyance for us. And there is a free parking spot for our car out back. We had one small hiccup with the wifi but we called near 11pm and they rebooted the router (in another apartment) and it worked great for the rest of our stay.
For visiting Montreal, the location is very convenient to take the subway downtown (east) or to drive to the Canadian Railway Musuem(southwest) or to Mont Royal(North). -

Wonderful location within a short walk to two metro stations so there was no need to use our car once we arrived (we were also given a convenient parking spot ). The owner was incredibly helpful in giving us suggestions on things to do or providing directions. He mentioned Bixi Bikes to us and it was a great inexpensive way to get around the city (provided the weather is nice). Montreal is a very bikeable city and even for me (Mom) who hadn't been on a bike in close to a couple decades, it was very enjoyable. The bikes can be picked up and dropped off at hundreds of different area locations. As for the apartment itself, it is very spacious and has lots of old character ,so it feels like you are living more like a Montreal native than a tourist which we all loved. The check-in/out process was easy and friendly (Oleg was terrific). The unit is located in a quiet area that is still close to anything you want to see or do. We would definitely stay there again.

This character-filled apartment is full of quirky charm and has everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a welcoming bag of bagels from Oleg. It fronts a quiet, leafy, one-way street which is lined with beautiful old apartments and is within easy walking distance of two Metro stations, the atwater market and the atwater Metro shopping complex. Unfortunately the next door neighbours are renovating their apartment (which is only about a foot from the back deck) and this caused some issues during our stay, but Oleg and Luda did all they could to reduce the intrusion. The apartment could also be a little noisy at night if you decided to sleep with the window open (as we did on hot nights), as the main bedroom picks up noise from the nearby railway line and major road at the rear. As non-smokers, we also found the cigarette smoke from other tenants to be invasive, but these are all issues out of the owner's control and they do all they can to make the apartment as comfortable as possible. A great location and a memorable space.

Stayed with my husband, sister-in-law and brother-in-law this weekend. Very nice apartment, well furnished, warm, very clean and fully stocked. Beautiful hardwood floors, exposed brick wall, high ceilings. Nice location within a 10-minute walk from the atwater Market, which opens early and where fresh croissants can be purchased for a yummy breakfast. Nice deck with a BBQ, There are two large flights of stairs (1 outdoor, the other to get to the 2nd floor), which could be a challenge to anyone who is blind or has trouble walking, but one of our party is blind and she managed fine, after getting to know the apartment. St. Catherine's Street a five-minute walk away, with tons of restaurants. Old Montreal and Downtown are easily accessed via taxi or the metro. The owners are very friendly and helpful. I am definitely planning on coming back, this time with the kids. This is a perfect rental and a great way to experience Montreal as if you were a native.

IndianapolisThis Apartment was AWESOME!
Left on 02/17/2012 for a stay in January 2012
My boyfriend and I stayed in this apartment the last week of January 2012. The reason for our trip was to attend a Montreal Canadiens game. We drove almost 900 miles one way from Indiana to do this (no, we are not crazy). Our trip also coincided with the Super Bowl and the massive crowds of people that filed into our city, so we had to get away. I utilized Trip Advisor to find an apartment or vacation rental that would meet our needs. My primary concern was the weather since we had never been to Canada before. Given that it was probable that we would have a lot of snow, I wanted to be within walking distance of the Bell Center, a grocery store, gas station, etc. Basically if we could not drive, we needed to be able to walk to get what we needed. We planned our trip months in advance, and I was shocked to find that other apartments had already been booked (primarily, ones that were closer to the Bell Center). I liked the reviews other Trip Advisor members provided for this apartment and the owner, so I was super excited that it was available.
The De Vreeze’s are a hilarious couple who were prompt in returning e-mails and getting us the rental agreement. The rental was also extremely affordable for the location in comparison to other apartments in the area. It took us 2 days to reach Montreal, and we were actually really early getting in. This was no problem – we called Oleg and he told us where to park when we got there. We had no problem finding the place and Oleg was out front clearing the ice off the steps. He graciously offered to help us take our stuff into the apartment and once we got situated, he gave us a tour of the apartment. It was actually a lot bigger than I anticipated. You enter in the living room and there is a front and back bedroom, a single bathroom with a tub, and a kitchen that is an eat-in (there is also another dining area in the living room). I wish we would have been here in the spring because there were also 2 balconies, but with the snow we could not use them. The apartment was more than adequate for the 2 of us. There was an eclectic mix of antique and modern furniture and there were plenty of dishes, pans, silver wear, etc. in the kitchen. Oleg provided his contact numbers if we needed anything or had any issues at all. He also told us about a ton of things we could do or see (see my other reviews) and he also directed us to the “cheap” grocery store The PA, which was awesome and only like 2 blocks away. We had a bit of “sticker shock” when we went to a few grocery stores. I am used to buying a box of brand name cereal on sale for $1.88 – an off brand in Montreal runs over $6. Everything here was really expensive, except for produce at the PA, which was way cheaper than we can get it in Indiana. Anyway, back to the apartment.
The apartment is in a very old building, so it has all the cool quirks that only age can provide, like original hardwood floors, huge front windows, and exposed brick in the living room. As a part time antique dealer, I thought this was super cool. That being said, it is not fancy or modern. It is like an apartment a normal person would live in -and it was clean, especially the bathroom. The apartment was also very quiet, on a more or less private street, and it was in a very safe part of town. As I said before, we were a 5 minute or less walk to the grocery store, a gas station was less than a 2 minute walk away, and the Bell Center was about a 15-20 minute walk in the snow. If we ever came back to Montreal, I would stay here again.
There were a few things that prospective visitors might want to take into account. You MUST use stairs to get into the apartment, and they are steep since they are old. If you have little children or you have issues doing stairs, this might not work for you. I know we packed a TON of crap with us and it was a haul getting it all in, but we did it. There is a commuter train that regularly ran directly behind the apartment, but honestly it was not obtrusive or too noisy. I live one block away from a fire station at home, and that is something I consider to be obnoxious, the train was not. There is street parking in the front – but it was taken the whole time we were there. So, we used the parking spot in the back. We rented a Kia Sedan, which is larger than the car I own and we BARELY got the car in the spot. You have to park between a tree and a privacy fence – I have no idea if an SUV would even fit in the spot. Also, since there was snow, we did not use the spiral stair case in the back so we had to walk around to the front of the building to enter the apartment. This was not a problem at all, but just so you are aware. -

Left on 02/03/2012 for a stay in December 2011
I stayed here for nine days after Christmas with two, and occasionally three, adult children. It is not your usual serviced apartment, being furnished and equipped with quite an eclectic assortment of furnishings and accessories.
The apartment is somewhat aged, with uneven floors and dodgy-looking electrical wiring, but it was comfortably heated with individual room controls, and most of the appliances worked. The kitchen was reasonably well-supplied for cooking-in. There was a small portable washing machine in the kitchen that worked ll, but larger loads and tumble drying had to be done in the spooky basement. In winter, we could not use the external back staircase to access the basement, and had to walk around the block.
The apartment was in a residential street quite close to a major shopping centre and the subway, and an easy walk downtown, if you can face the Montreal cold weather. There was both on- and off- street parking- a bonus in this city.
The bedding and linen were excellent, but the bathroom towels could be upgraded, and there were insufficient towel racks. The water pressure in the shower was somewhat dismal, but the temperature was ok.
Although a futon was available when my third child came to visit, it was really uncomfortable and not suitable for regular use.
The only significant drawback was the wi-fi Internet which was fairly weak and unreliable, often cutting out.
We quite enjoyed our stay here, and would be happy to return, as it really suited our purpose. -

Great place good location close to metro and down town, Less expensive then a hotel down town and you get an apartment not just a room . We were there in December for a week so it was cold and snowy, it is a very comfortable place warm and cozy . If we ever chose to go again I'm sure we will book this place . The owner met us the day we arrived and even helped Carrie in the luggage etc , left us bagels too. He is very helpful and extremely nice.
If you are staying long enough that you need grocers there is a IGa a few blocks away in a shopping center and they will deliver a SaQ is close by too. Well equipped apartment in an upscale part of town. Parking is off the street around back in view of the back porch
You have to go around back to get to your car and it is not a long walk . Don't worry you can unload out front so don't let that be a concern, It is a cul de sac so you have very little traffic to contend with, We have a small dog to walk and sent our teen out to walk him with no fear . There are other dogs in the building and all were friendly to ours -

The owner is very responsive and easy-going (also great sense of humor). Arranging the lease for our long-weekend stay was a piece of cake. The owner was there waiting for us when we arrived, gave us a quick tour of the place - which was very quaint, indeed - and even bought us a bag of Montreal's famous bagels!
The location was fantastic - the apartment is on the 3rd floor of the building of a quiet, wooded street. Parking is not an issue if you intend to drive. The grocery store, restaurants, and the metro were just a few minutes' walk away. Very convenient.
This place is advertised as a 2-bedroom that can sleep 4 people, and it is. However, the bed in the second room is a single. The owner did have a futon there that could be set up separately, but my husband and I were too lazy to and decided to cram into the tiny bed together. Would've been nice to have a bigger second bed so that we could have slept together comfortably, but it was doable for 2 nights. That's really my only issue with the place.
The deck out back was great - be sure to make use of it if you can! Overall a great stay. I would definitely check to see if this place is available again the next time we decide to visit Montreal. -

A comfortable apartment in a very convenient location close to the atwater metro station.
The apartment was as described and while not luxurious it is clean, well furnished and competitively priced. What makes it special is the service provided by Oleg and Luda. They were very helpful and kind; Oleg met me half way upon arrival as I walked to the apt from the metro station (on an extremely hot and humid day) and my wife and I were able to use another apt the afternoon of the day we checked out (we had a late flight). All in all a very pleasant stay that I would do again and can recommend to others. -

Canberra, AustraliaBrilliant owners, excellent service, great location, comfortable
Left on 06/01/2011 for a stay in May 2011
1) The apartment: Firstly, the key things you need to know - This apartment is spacious, well equipped, comfortable and clean. It is located one floor from the top and has some lovely antique/vintage oak furnishings which, when teamed with the bare brick feature wall and period features (high ceilings, iron "juliet type" balcony from the 2nd bedroom, wooden floors) make it both warm in ambiance and comfortable, which is such a change from the modernist starkness of hotel rooms. It is located in between 2 subway(metro) stations which are a 10 minute ride to the old town (Atwater on the green line and Lionel Groulx on the orange line) which is easy to use and cheap, is about 200 metres to a large shopping plaza, 100 metres to the atwater Library (which has computers/internet if you don't travel with one or a smartphone) and about 800 metres to the atwater market (and the Premiere Moisson patisserie - delicious!!).
2) The owners: They are truly excellent! They really go above and beyond to accommodate you and your needs (within the bounds of possibility). They are such warm, friendly and helpful people that I can't sing their praises highly enough. The difference is that they actually like people, like to engage with the traveller and they care about their apartment. I think the day they stop enjoying the interaction with the travellers who stay there, is the day they'll give up doing it. If you are a traveller who also likes people, enjoys travel and is open to the world and experiences you will also love these people as much as I did.
3) The verdict: Finding this apartment and getting to know both the owners and Montreal was a true highlight of my very long and extended travel to the USa and Canada. I would recommend it to friends, return like a shot myself if only I was closer and will put it on my "Definitely must return" list. (A word or two only extra: if you have problems with stairs, are not used to apartment living (you can hear the people above walking around) or prefer hotel rooms with stark furnishings and impersonal service, this and many other places in Montreal, may not be for you). Do yourself a favour in your life...go to Montreal and rent this apartment! -

Left on 05/06/2011 for a stay in March 2011
We had three adults staying in this nice-sized apartment. It was charmingly decorated and well-furnished and you have pretty much everything you need to be very comfortable. It was in a good location, not central, but close to 2 metro lines and close to a lot of shopping and dining (we especially liked the atwater Market). You have to take two flights of stairs to get there (a little tricky if you have heavy luggage or mobility issues) and 1 flight of stairs is outside and icy in the winter. Off street parking was available, but out back and not very close to the entrance. The washer and dryer are located in the basement, 2 floors down and outside- so pretty inconvenient, but there if you absolutely need it. The bathroom was in need of updating, but overall these are the inconveniences that go with the charming old Victorian architecture. If you don't mind the issues, its a pleasant place to stay and Oleg and Luda are very friendly and helpful.

We visited Montreal with my 1.5 year old twins, and we had a great time. Oleg and Luda went out of their way to make our stay more comfortable (childproofing the apartment by installing gate on stairs, blocking specific areas), providing toys (which the kids loved!), and delicious bagels for our breakfasts. The master bedroom was nice and spacious, we were to fit both pack 'n play cribs in there comfortable with us. The DeVreezes were available to answer all our questions, and we had a good stay.

Left on 01/04/2011 for a stay in December 2010
My family stayed here for a week at Christmas as we were visiting extended family. The apartment is a charming, beautifully-maintained old place with lots of character, but also comfortable and functional. We had a big family dinner there that worked fine. The location is really perfect: At the edge of downtown, two blocks from both the atwater Market and the Forum/Alexis Nihon Plaza with its Metro station, and also right next to a freeway entrance so you have access to the whole city. But the street itself is quiet and pretty. Owners are also very helpful, and the internet is fast. There were two negatives. Water pressure for the shower was sometimes iffy, and the laundry machines were in the basement, requiring that you go outside to get to them (bad when it's bitterly cold). But we will eagerly stay there again, and recommend this place to others.
