Auckland Region, New ZealandMuri retreat - fantastic
Left on 12/05/2012 for a stay in November 2012
We enjoyed the seclusion & the privacy not to mention the personal touch, it was home away from home, 10mins walk away from Muri Beach, amazing helpful hosts who bent over backwards to make us feel welcome, they even bought us a fruit platter, showed us how to husk a coconut, we would definitely stay there again.

Muri Retreat is away from the crowds of Muri Lagoon which is a bonus. The apartment had everything we needed including a comfortable bed, great shower and well equipped kitchen. Whilst we had a car we could walk to the beach, cafes and restaurants. Phoebe and Steve are very welcoming. Don't miss the coconut demonstration. We stayed a week and could have made it a month

MelbourneLife as it is meant to be!
Left on 08/26/2012 for a stay in August 2012
From the very first minute we arrived, Steve and Phoebe welcomed us with open arms. Their hospitality was wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble from welcoming us into their 'retreat', recommending things to do and places to see, offering us fresh fruit and teaching us how to husk and open coconuts. The accommodation is very comfortable and peaceful. The short walk up the hill from the main road was easily achieved. It is ideally located in the 'cool' of the hillside and protected from the wind which blew up during part of our stay. Unable to lay on the beach due to the wind, the pool at the 'retreat' was sheltered and very comfortable. Each morning we would wake to views over the hills and Muri lagoon from our upper level room. The kitchen utensils and equipment enabled us to make up meals from supplies we bought at the supermarket, the local stalls or the market. We would take our meals/drinks out onto the balcony and take in the views (including the views of the luscious garden and pool). The accommodation was an easy walk to the Muri 'village' shops, cafes and restaurants... and of course the beautiful Muri lagoon.
Steve and Phoebe's Muri Retreat was the most comfortable and 'easy going' places we have ever stayed. One of the most relaxing holidays we have ever had. Thanks. We will be back!

Las Vegas, NevadaRetreat at Muri Retreat
Left on 08/06/2012 for a stay in August 2012
My husband and I are avid travelers. We decided to stay at Muri Retreat on our first trip to the Cook Islands and we were lucky to find this jem. The resort was very clean and the grounds were lush and immaculate. We rented the downstairs unit. It was perfect for two. The bed was comfortable, shower pressure good and easy to assess kitchen and lounge area. The BBQ/Pool area was fun and we enjoyed many a BBQ with music and dancing under the tropical hut. It was wonderful to relax by the pool with a Matutu beer in hand:)
The hosts Phoebe and Steve were the most complementary and helpful people to have provided us a rental thus far. The first day Steve showed us how to husk a coconut and Phoebe brought us fresh fruit. Each day we got fresh passion fruit, bananas and/or paw paw and coconut. My husband loves coconut water and learned to husk his own by the end.
We didn't use the TV much as the weather was great sunny 9 out of 13 days but, it was nice to have to watch the Olympics and for rainy or chilling days. -

Christchurch, New ZealandFabulous apartments for a group of friends
Left on 08/03/2012 for a stay in July 2012
We travelled as three couples, so had 3 of the four apartments. They were super clean and well equipped. Steve and Phoebe were just awesome, they welcomed us with fresh fruit (and continued to bring it throughout the stay), they advised us on places to go and even gave us a lift in the back of their ute. The BBQ area was awesome and we could pick fresh chillies from the garden. There is a walk to the beach (not far) and you will need a torch at night, but big plus was being there and not being surrounded by other people, it felt like our own place. We have already decided we will go back!

Wellington, New ZealandGreat place and excellent value!
Left on 08/01/2012 for a stay in July 2012
We went to Raro to attend a friend's wedding and wanted to stay in the Muri area as that is where the wedding was and all of our other friends were staying. We stayed for a week in the smallest unit of this 4 unit house. It was perfect for what we needed. Had a two top burner, microwave, fridge, etc. Sometimes the noise from those walking around upstairs was a bit annoying but could not hear anything apart from that from our neighbors. It was really excellent value for what it offered especially compared to some of the prices our friends paid in the same area. We would definitely go back again and encourage our friends to rent out the other units as it would be a really fun place to be together. Would definitely recommend getting a scooter as soon as you arrive as it makes getting up and down the driveway that much quicker! :) Also, be sure to visit the Banana wine guy just down the driveway.

255100Great place for a laid back holiday
Left on 06/19/2012 for a stay in June 2012
Muri Retreat is essentially one large house that has been separated into 4 separate accomodation spaces. We stayed for approx. 1 week in one of the first floor apartments and found it had everything we needed including a kitchen to prepare our own food and a balcony area from where we could relax looking at the water. Fortunately the room is also well screened to help keep the mozzies at bay. It is located about 500metres inland from the main road and while we enjoyed walking / cycling, there is space for a car / motor scooter if preferred. The hosts are very helpful providing just the right balance of being available for a chat / info but not in your face. They were great!

Left on 06/10/2012 for a stay in January 2012
We stayed here in mid-January for 3 weeks and could not have wished for better. We like to be self-sufficient and enjoy peace and quiet and this place delivered both. The apartments were clean and in a great location, literally 2 minutes to one of the best snorkelling spots on the island. We hired a scooter which gave us greater freedom to explore the island. Phoebe and Steve were great hosts, very friendly and knowledgeable. The apartments were clean, plenty big enough, with all you needed to self-cater. We would highly recommend staying here and if we ever get back to Raro we definitely be staying here.

New ZealandThe higher you go the better it gets
Left on 04/20/2012 for a stay in April 2012
Ok so we rented 3 of the 4 rooms out based on the fact that our adult children could have their own space but we could get together as a group when we wanted. Our expectations were very well met. Initially I was concerned that we weren't staying on the beach but soon realised that 'retiring' after a sunny day on the beach to our own private oasis in the lush gardens was pure magic. Views to die for, made a G&T; at sunset something special.
Steve and Pheobe really making staying here a real treat, personal touches too numerous to mention.
I would recommend the 2 upstairs rooms with their spacious balconies and views. They are bigger than all the other 'bungalows' around the island (yep checked out most of them) and of course so much better value for money.
Staying on the hill means you get to try out so much more of the island, grab a couple of mopeds from Donnell at Pacific Cars just down the road and you are off for a purely awesome time. 3 minutes to Fruits of Rarotonga and the best snorkeling on the island. Take a morning stroll down the drive to one of the quietest and most beautiful beaches I have ever come across. It's also easy to get to all the Muri bars and restaurants by foot by walking along the beach.
Totally recommend a Wednesday music evening at The Waterline Restaurant 20 mins away on the bus...by far the best entertainment and food we had. But remember you can save yourselves hundreds if not thousands of dollars by self catering at Muri Retreat. We took an extra suitcase of frozen meat cheese, milk etc which lasted us 2 weeks. The average main meal out cost is $30nz so can really add up when there is 6 of you and dad is paying!
Don't hesitate booking this place if you're a DIY sort of family or group. Hope it doesn't get too popular because you better not book it out when we want to go back soon! -

Steve & Phoebe were great hosts which matched their great apartments. I traveled with 2 other friends and we had a wonderful time at Rarotonga, partly in thanks to the wonderful accommodations. The island typically has mosquitos but Steve & Phoebe took great lengths to make sure their lodgings were completely screened to keep the critters out. The grounds of their apartments were well kept with beautiful tropical plants. The very clean salt water pool was an added bonus if we didn't want to walk 5mins to the beach. Would highly recommend this place!

Wilmington, North CarolinaPeaceful, Comfortable, Wonderful!!!
Left on 10/22/2011 for a stay in September 2011
Based on great advice from other Tripadvisor travelers, we booked an upstairs studio apartment for a month. Our goal was to have an experience closer to day to day island life than resort life. Muri Retreat provided everything we wished for and more! Even though we arrived quite early, Steve and Phoebe were there to welcome us. Apartment was exactly as advertised on their website; clean, nicely appointed and a very comfortable king size bed to greet the sunrise every morning. We settled in like we lived there our entire lives. Over the course of the month, Steve and Phoebe gave us many great suggestions for places to go and things to do.
They brought us fresh bananas, pawpaws and taught us how to grate our own coconut. A short walk down the hill (not too steep) brings you to Muri lagoon, restaurants (don't miss Stephano's and Miro's) and shopping. Muri Retreat provided the tranquil setting in which we could go "troppo" learning about the land, the culture and the people of this beautiful island. We can't thank Phoebe and Steve enough for their warm and gracious hospitality!!!
Anyone looking for something more than the typical resort experience will not be disappointed at Muri Retreat. We'll be back!! -

First, we can't say enough about the hosts, Steve and Phoebe, who were exceptional. The apartment is lovely with plenty of fully screened windows/patio door. Tucked in a lush tropical hillside, the view was great and the location private. Privacy doesn't mean inconvenience as the property is a short walking distance from Muri beach and village. We highly recommend Muri Retreat.

Auckland, New ZealandFabulous place, fab hosts
Left on 09/08/2011 for a stay in August 2011
We stayed at Muri Retreat apartments for 10 days in august 2011, and enjoyed ourselves immensley, as all our requirements were very adequately met. We arrived in the middle of the night from NZ, and the taxi-driver showed us our apartment ('Onu'), which was very welcoming - with little bouquet's of sweetly-scented flowers arranged in various places around the room, and gentle lighting. The bed was really comfortable and shower hot and powerful. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our own meals (from the fabulous fresh produce available). If we needed anything, Phoebe and Steve were really helpful, and friendly. They were a mine of information about the Island. When we awoke in the morning we found the sun streaming into our apartment, and stunning views of the surrounding environment, including glimpses of the lagoon - a gorgeous twinkling blue. The garden was lovely and restful, with plenty of private decking, outdoor furniture including a large umbrella, a small, refreshing swimming pool, and plenty of parking for our hired scooter, and those of the other residents. Everything was very clean and tidy.
A laundry at the back had a washing-machine and washing powder (no extra charge to use), iron and there was plenty of clothes lines and pegs. Phoebe and Steve were only a phone call away, and they visited us almost daily, often bearing gifts: fresh banana, coconut or papayas. The property is located up a hill only 10 minutes walk above Muri lagoon. It was very quiet and serene, and afforded some protection from the cool onshore wind. We would definitely go back and stay here, and highly recommend this lovely place. -

Wellington, New Zealanda flurry cocktail of niceness and beauty
Left on 08/24/2011 for a stay in August 2011
due to being double booked by muri shell bungalows, we ended up desperately going for muri retreat last minute. man, we could not have been more satisfied about that twist of fate. even if we aimed for beach side and muri retreat is a five minute walk from the beach, it's got so many other benefits. because it's up a hill, the views are fantastic and because you're away from the main drag, you can sleep with screen doors, which makes for a lovely, fresh sleep, broken only by the sound of hoarse roosters greeting the morning (?) at 2 am. bring earplugs. the apartment itself (we stayed in no 4), was lovely and fresh and equipped with everything we needed, including a very comfy king size bed. phoebe and steve were such friendly, generous and hospitable hosts.
if i would have to say one "bad" thing, it would be that if you come with the bus, it's a fair bit to drag your bags up the hill. if you're not too fit, go for the transfer. without bags and for anyone not morbidly obese, the walk really isn't an issue at all.
general tips and tricks: buy your tax free in raro airport when you arrive. many people suggests bringing food if you're on a budget, but we found it really wasn't that much more expensive in the avarua supermarket (except fruit and fresh food, but you can't bring that anyway.) the side of muri beach that's just below muri retreat is beautiful and empty, but we actually had a strange but harmless encounter with a flasher (this is of course something very out of character for cooks and the locals knew straight away who he was, but just a little heads up if he's still out there).
i'd love to go back, and if i did, i know exactly where i'd stay. you should too. -

Would highly recommend this place to everyone. A delightful, funky place which is clean & comfortable & close to Muri Beach. The best part; the owners Phoebe & Steve who are warm & welcoming & will go out of their way to help with any aspect of the holiday. they even dropped off fresh fruit from their garden & told us how to make the best fruit smoothies ( yes there's a blender) & took us with them to do Zumba dancing! Pheobe and Steve were fantastic hosts whether it was dropping off fresh papaya, showing us a night out in town or answering any questions or queries we had. The unit was very clean and perfect for a young couple. It had everything to cook with and the blender for fresh fruit smoothies was fantastic. We used the bbq quite alot and the balcony was great for relaxing, eating, drinking, and looking out over the lush green landscape and out onto the ocean. We hired push bikes for the week which made the whole island accessible. The main supermarket is around the other side of the island so we stocked up once and then bought local fruit daily. definately bring your own snorkel and mask. fruits of rarotonga was our fav spot.

San Francisco, CaliforniaReally private and comfortable stay !
Left on 04/03/2011 for a stay in March 2011
It was really private, well located (specially when you have rented scooter). We had apartment located on the second floor with balcony and a exceptional sea view. We were lucky as we had all house for ourselves (shared it only with few friendly but shy geckos running on balcony).
We loved the place as it was so private and distant – it felt like it was our summer cottage in that lovely Island.
Only entertainment (beside ourselves) was radio with one local station playing local music and news – it was so real! For a week you don’t need more than that!
Nearby activities.
It was convenient to spend time in restaurant Sails (15min walk or few minutes with scooter), where is great view, nice food and service (also WiFi though, its really expensive like it's everywhere in Island – anyway you shouldn’t connect to Internet while you are there :) ).
Also nice cafe/pizzeria close by (also in Muri village) – just on the corner of the entrance to big resort. Good and reasonably priced salads and service with a smile.
The nearest store is at the small petrol station at Muri village, operated by friendly Chinese man (locals said only Chinese living in Island - who is working every day, all day! He should take some time off as well! :) ). From him you can buy also local newspaper “Cooks Island News” – really informative!
Thank you Phoebe and Steve!

We stayed at Muri Retreat for a week in February. What can I say, it was perfect! We had a top floor apartment that had everything we needed, even a blender for our evening cocktail! The gardens are beautiful, and we spent many afternoons at the pool.
Steve and Phoebe are wonderful, very welcoming and will assist you with anything you need. Steve made sure we had fresh fruit every morning picked right from the trees on the property.
The apartments are at the end of a beautiful garden lane, about a 10 minute walk from an idyllic beach and maybe 15 minutes into town. If your considering going to the Cook Islands stay at Muri Retreat, we would go back in a second!!
Thank you Steve and Phoebe! -

This was our third stay at Muri retreat and our seventh in Rarotonga in as many years. Words fail us when we look back and consider the great times we have had. The accommodation is well positioned and provisioned and the hosts Steve and Phoebe are now friends that we treasure. They go out of their way to ensure that you are comfortable and satisfied with everything. We hope to return some day as this place really is our home away from home!
