      Wonderful

Left on 04/21/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We stayed at Hobbit House to start off our 25 years dreamed of Hawaii vacation, and what a way to start. Darlene and Bill are amazing, super friendly and informative. As for the Hobbit House, what you see is what you get! It is so relaxing and comfortable, and the views, I'm not sure there are words to discribe them! Although it is a bit of a drive from the airport, HH is in the perfect location as you are centrally located for most activities. If we ever make it back to Hawaii, we will definitely be in contact with Bill and Darlene, hoping to stay in their Whimsical Hobbit House:)

      Rooms with a view

Left on 02/19/2013 for a stay in February 2013

We've been to the Big Island several times but never had an experience as positive and serene as we had at the Hobbit House. Its off the grid in an idyllic spot that exemplifies Hawaii. It has a really large living area compared to everywhere else we have been and very clean. It was fun staying in touch with the natural world and how it all interacted with the solar cells and windmill. The outdoor area was manicured with grassy areas to sit and read on, and lovely trees blooming that supplied us with fruit. I knew as we traversed the road straight up to the Hobbit house that we were in for an incredible view. Sure enough the first day we were there we were so transfixed by the incredible view and surrounding area we forgot about the agenda and sat on the couch and let ourselves be mesmerized. The combination of Darlene and Bills craftsmanship and glass art work was such a treat. It was custom and fanciful and just added such a wonderful ambience to the stay. They were the most gracious hosts supplying all kinds of information about best locations for anything you could want to do. We recommend this location to anyone looking for a unique, inspired, totally relaxing vacation. Oh, and did I mention the stars in the night sky which can be viewed in almost total darkness.

      Unique, relaxing retreat

Left on 01/20/2013 for a stay in January 2013

We had the pleasure of staying at Hobbit House on our first trip to the Big Island, and our stay surpassed our expectations.

Bill and Darlene are excellent hosts, full of knowledge and genuinely kind, fun, generous people. They manage to occupy the top half of the house while respecting your privacy and gladly help you with whatever you may need (suggestions, beach equipment, first-aid, etc.).

Hobbit House is a whimsical, unique property that uses off-the-grid energy and is surrounded by lush, beautiful trees and Darlene's garden. It was such fun to pick grapefruit off the tree and forage for avocados. Also, the hosts have a macadamia nut processing business through which they offer the best macadamia nuts you have ever had in your life (don't miss out! Those other ones you've been eating all this time are nasty!).

Don't be deterred by the distance up the hill to Hobbit House. Regular cars can make it and if you're patient, it's no problem navigating the road. After you see the stars at night and can hear only the roar of the ocean from below, you'll realize the trip was worth it. Thanks, Darlene and Bill!

If you stay here, we highly recommend the black sand beach at Punaluu (minutes away), Volcanoes National Park, South Point, and the Punaluu Bake Shop in Naalehu (Fabulous malasadas, try the passionfruit). What a great vacation.

      Unique and Unforgettable accommodation

Left on 04/17/2012 for a stay in March 2012

This is one of the most unique places our family has ever stayed. The home is large, beautiful, well-equipped, spotlessly clean, quiet - everything you would want in a place to stay. But what makes it truly unique is the home itself. Curved windows, a bathtub that seems to float above the floor (trick with mirrors), gorgeous stained glass, lights strung in eucalyptus branches, everything powered by alternative energy. I can't say enough about the surprises that await the curious. Darlene and Bill offered great advice on nearby places to visit, where to buy groceries, but then went beyond the call of duty, bringing out their telescope in the evening so we could star-gaze - saw the moons of Jupiter - offered us citrus fruit from their garden - showed us several of Bill's inventions, which my 11-yr-old son loved. If you are an intrepid traveler who dislikes cookie-cutter-styled hotels and resorts, this is a place I would recommend without reservation!

Dream about amazing views, tranqulity and Macnuts?

Left on 05/29/2011 for a stay in October 2010

Then this is your place! After working for a few weeks in Honolulu, I spent 1 week with my wife and little daughter (2 years old) here. The stay couldn't have been any better, our hosts were lovely, the house is amazing and the views couldn't be better. If you want to be away from it all and experience the Hawaii off the beaten track, then this is the place. best with a 4-wheel drive to explore the surroundings (normal car is good enough to get to the house without any problems).
Restaurants are a bit far away, so best stock up with supplies and cook yourself (or have lunch during the day on excursions).
And don't forgot to try the Macnuts - they are awesome!!! And we are from australia, so we know what we are talking about...

Peace and tranquility, high above the Pacific

Left on 02/17/2011 for a stay in December 2010

If you prefer a cookie-cutter experience, the Hobbit House is not for you. However, if you'd like to stay in a place that's full of character and rich in detail, then step right into this storybook home. The location is perfect for exploring the magnificent Ka`u coastline, which is my favorite part of Hawaii. Also, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Puna coast are within easy reach. Interested in alternative energy? The Hobbit House is one of the greenest homes on the island, as all power is derived from solar and wind. A toast to the hosts, Bill and Darlene, for allowing us to enjoy their piece of old Hawaii. A hui hou.

      Hobbit House Heaven!

Left on 09/21/2010 for a stay in September 2010

So..much to say about this special unique piece of heaven.
Upon arrival, Bill and Darlene greeted us and the aloha feeling was huge! They were great hosts and very knowledgable about the island. The Hobbit House view was spectacular! Best view I have ever seen!! Sweet sun and breezes dancing around me with coastline view took my breath away. The HH was amazing inside and out! How adorable yet such high quality construction. You can see it in every section of this home the love and hard work that went into it. The stained glass was stunning, the wood work detail blew me away! What a unique place. While staying there we were comfortable in our cozy clean room. We had our own full kitchen, private back porch, beautiful view, jacuzzi bath tub and comfy bed. Every night we slept so..peacefully. We loved how we are the perfect distance to the next town, tucked away up the hill. We are the only guests there which is a bonus! They only have one guest there at a time:) Such a quiet place to retreat to. If you're into sustainable living or eco-tourism in a comfortable setting ,this is for you! The solar and wind energy works so awesome that you can't even tell the difference! We highly recommend this heavenly place!
How blessed I feel to have been to the Hobbit House!

      Relaxing Stay

Left on 09/21/2010 for a stay in May 2010

Bill & Darlene are wonderful hosts always there when you need them and very helpful friendly couple. Enjoyed making friends with the couple. The Hobbit House is definitely a very unique home with a beautiful veiw. The picture window with the bench seat in the lovely living room is the perfect place to watch the sunset or relax read a book. The bathroom has a large soaking tub which is surronded by beautiful stain glass windows with a beautiful view the bathroom also has a large walk in shower.
If you are ready to relax and really get some rest I recommend the Hobbit House you won't be sorry.
The Hobbit House has some many different features that I could not stop looking around to see if I missed something. I cannot wait to return the lovely property
