The best thing about this house was the elevator. There are stains all over the carpet, there are tears in the carpet with tacking nails sticking out. The kitchen is small, and the house is laid out weird.
I did not feel comfortable having my children stay on the bottom floor, right by the entrance which did not have a dead bolt. There is also not a way to keep children from getting out the back door to the pool.

Rented thru OBX Blue. Best service we've had in the 17 yrs. of going to the OBX. No check in just go directly to house is a very good deal! Also, problem with hot tub was rectfied same day after 1 phone call. A new gas grill was also delivered that same day. Location of The Sandman was great. Lots of things were within walking distance. Most of amenties were good with just a few minor issues. There wasn't enough silverware for everyone in the house. It sleeps 16 and we had that many and had to clean forks for everyone to eat. We like to help keep house clean but the house didn't have a vaccum sweeper. Owner may want to look at carpeting near kitchen area, getting somewhat worn. None of these issues were big deal and overall it was a pleasant stay for our entire group.

My extended family spent a week here recently. Folks in the house ranged from my 78 year old mother to my three month old daughter. The elevator was essential for both my mother and mother-in-law, as was using the public beach access (fewer stairs than the typical dune walk). My nieces and nephews loved the pool, hot tub, and billiards. You can't beat the location regarding shops, restaurants, and activities. The keyless entry was also great.
That said, there were cigarette butts stuck in the boards of the decks. The kitchen sink should just be replaced and some of the knives had broken from their hilts. There was sand in many of the showers. There were hair ties that did not belong to our group left by the hot tub. Tiles around the pool were cracked and broken. The external lint trap to the dryer must be completely clogged because it took 2 - 3 dry cycles to actually get something dry. The carpet in the great room is shredded. There is not a fully-functioning, unbroken set of blinds in the house. Few of the outdoor chairs were not broken and a significant number of the indoor chairs had broken parts. There was a high chair, but the portable crib was truly disgusting and we were thankful that my mother-in-law traveled with her pack'n'play so that my daughter had a safe, clean place to sleep without making a run to K-Mart.
In short, as long as you prioritize location over appointments (or even cleanliness), the Sandman does the trick.

We were hesitant about this house because some reviews had not been extremely good. I was pleased to find this house was perfect for our family! Very clean, neat and in the perfect location. Kitchen was well stocked with all we needed. There were 9 adults, which was a perfect fit for this home. Bedrooms were just great! The home is located next to a public beach access which did not bother us a bit. We enjoyed watching the surfers that showed up during our stay. May is a great month to visit the Outer Banks and we certainly recommend Outer Banks Blue and The Sandman!

We stayed the week of 9/12 - 9/18. I will highly recommend Outer Banks Blue. I'll explain. The Sandman was a very nice house. It had all the amenities that we were looking for - pool, hot tub, oceanfront, pool table and elevator. The elevator was especially important for my father who can't do stairs well. Unfortunately, we had some issues with the electric and with the pool and hot tub. However, each time we had to call Outer Banks Blue, they were very quick to respond and had someone out to fix the problems within one hour of contacting them. They were incredible to work with. They were very professional and very kind. They never got upset, even after having to call them a 3rd time.
As far as the house itself, as I said, it was very nice and suited our needs. However, its needs to be upgraded - a lot! The bedding was very dated and showing wear and tear. The bedrooms were quite small. Some were very difficult to move around in. The carpeting in the living room and rec rooms was starting to fray and run. And the furniture needed to be updated too. And it needs a bigger or upgraded water heater because a lot of us took cold showers most of the time.
We also liked the location of the house. Some people didn't like the public access right next to the house. I do think the outside stairway from the 2nd floor to the outside of the house's fenced in area is a bit of a security risk. Any stranger could easily have come up those stairs and walked in through any of the doors on that deck. We took extra care to make sure those doors stayed locked.
I'd say the best thing I liked was it had everything we were looking for @ the right price. It was priced very reasonably. My least favorite thing, I suppose, would be that it needed some updating. But, the fact that we got to spend the week together with family and friends, we had a blast together and we were able to relax. That was the best. Nobody wanted to go home!
I will use OB Blue again!!!!
Beautiful home but the oceanview dune hinders the view!

The house itself was great; however, the large oceanfront dune hindered the oceanview and caused quite a bit of sand in the pool. Being next to the public beach access and not having our own dune deck was another issue.
Other than those issues, we thoroughly enjoyed the set up of the house and its amenities, especially the recreation room with the poot table and extra refrigerator. It enabled us to keep drinks and snacks on the lower level for easy access from the pool area. The pool was a nice size and we enjoyed the hot tub as well.

We stayed in the house next to the Sandman 4 years ago and had a
wonderful experience. Because of this, we were excited to come back to the
Sandman thinking it would be the same. Here is a list of things that we
were not happy with.
1.The downstairs windows looking out to the pool were very dirty, you
could barely see the pool. We bought windex ourselves to clean it.
2.The pool and hot tub were filled with sand and the pumps were not
working. We had to wait until Tuesday before the pool got cleaned.
3. Two lawn chairs and three chairs were broken and did not receive new
ones until Thursday, two days before we had to check out.
4.The grill had left over food and foil in it, and we had to use a knife to turn
on the grill because there weren't any knobs.
5. The Air Conditioning in the 3rd floor was not working the second night
we were there and the temperature was 87 degrees while trying to sleep. It
was reported and fixed the next day.
6.Towel racks were broken in the downstairs bedroom.
Overall we were very dissappointed in The Sandman and will not be
returning to either house.

This is our third time at the Sandman
There were technical issues when we arrived but the staff was responsive....Broken toilet, VCR was broken and downstair (basement) ceiling was leaking from somewhere internal.... things that we could adjust to and work around.....
Thanks for heated pool even know the heater broke on Thursday and never was repaired !!!....we understand.....We really like our pool heat as we are from Florida (Pools must be at least 88F)or people don't get in them !!
Hope to see you again next year....provided the pool heater gets fixed !

This was our 6th year staying in OBX for our vacation. The location of the house could not be better...very convenient to stores, Fat Boyz ice cream at the end of driveway, food, you could basically walk everywhere you wanted to go.
Of all of the houses we have stayed, this one was the least equipped. The kitched was sparcely supplied. Also the pool and hot tub were not cleaned either before or during our arrival.
The other issues were resolved by handyman Tim...who was very friendly and accomodating..altho, it begs to say he was there a few times, as the children were always excited to see Mr. Tim!
All in all a great value for the money, but improving those few things will go a long way! :o)

The Sandman is in a great location. This is the 8th year we have done a fall vacation with 4 other couples. The house was clean and adequate for our needs however 2 of the queen bedrooms on the 2nd floor are a bit on the small size. You had to crawl over the bed to get to the bath room. Our stay was for 2 weeks and we were remarking that the Outer Banks Blue rental company was perhaps the best we have rented from as they responded very promply to 2 of our calls for service then on Friday of our last week the electric went out in the top floor (Master Suite and 1/2 bath and kitchen)we called at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. When we left on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. it was still not working in the master suite and bath.
Other than the electric problem with no response from rental company the home was fine. All things considered I would recomend this rental agency and home.

For $7200.00 a week you expect to walk into at least a clean home. The bathrooms were not clean and the pool and hottub were full of sand. One of the bathrooms backed up with water when you took a shower. The pool people came out three times, however, they did not clean the pool until Thursday (we were leaving on Saturday). The dryer squeaked so bad, we had to have someone come fix that. The basketball net they advertise unfortunately did not have a net attached. All in all we have 5 service calls for the property. The realtor did try to accomodate us, but you have your personal property and all your belongings in the house, so we wanted someone at the house when personnel came to fix things. I wouldn't stay there again, and the owner would not reimburse us any money. Spider webs in the corners, the refrigerator had food stuck in it. The kitchen sink was totally discolored. Maybe a little bleach would help. The outside shower was totally unusable as the sand was 3 inches thick and you had no drain for the water so it sat with you. I will say it was close to everything, but for $7200. a week, you expect things at least to be clean. He owns twelve properties, so make sure you check out it, before you rent it. I'll go elsewhere next time. Read more
