Description from the manager

This "Old Nags Head" style Cottage, built in 1931, should be on an Historic Register! The old photos, furnishings and memorabilia throughout the house are just fascinating and remind us of a simpler time! The original hard wood floors & ceilings along with the rustic kitchen and baths add to the feeling; although all the modern conveniences exist! And the views of the ocean and Jockey's Ridge State Park are incredible. So sit down in a rocker on one of the large porches, pour yourself a lemonade and enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean!Amenities Include: HVAC, W/D, DW, MW, CATV, VCR, CFs, Sun Deck, Covered Deck, Deck Furniture.Ground Leve...Read more

My experience was uncomfortable, cold, and non-relaxing

Left on 04/22/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We were excited to stay in one of Nags head original homes but when arrived we were in for something totally different. This house is a "dirty-old" dilapidated home. You can tell that it is not taken care of; furniture is falling apart and sinks/ bathrooms are beyond outdated. I realize that we came to the beach at the end of march and the weather can be different day to day but, the draft was so bad around the doors and windows the temp. inside the home would not go above 58 degrees. The lighting was so bad I could not even see to put my contacts in, in the morning. The mirrors themselves were turning black all throughout the home. Most of the furniture in the home needs to be thrown out and new needs to be bought. The outside shutters were broke and when the wind blew the shutters would bag against the house all day and night making it hard for anyone to sleep. The pillows, blankets, and mattress covers had stains and blood spattered all over them. The deck furniture was wobbly making it hard for anyone to sit in them. My family and I come to nags head 3 times a year and we stay in a different house every time, this house is by far the worst house we have ever stayed in. If we knew what we were in fore when we booked this house we would of never wasted our vacation, time, or money on this rundown, dirty-old, unwelcoming home!!! Very disappointed!!!

      2 full baths? Not quite.

Left on 10/14/2012 for a stay in October 2012

Wile this house has a lot of charm and history, it also has a few quirks that you may or may not want to deal with. One of the two full baths is actually a corner of the upstairs hallway that you have to,walk through to get to another part of the house ( the other full bath that is attached to a bedroom, and another living area with 2 sets of bunk beds). This particular bath really is positioned to serve 4 bedrooms, but it is pathetically small. It literally is the corner of a hallway where someone dropped in a toilet, tiny sink, and a shower stall. If anyone has to get to the bedrooms on the other side while you are in there, you have no privacy.

This house is not for small children. There are a lot of low hanging pictures on the walls and some nails sticking out, as well. The table in one of the "bedrooms" on the lower level that is geared towards a child had old screws sticking out around a corner of it. We also found lots of nails and screws randomly in the sand just behind the house. This is no one's fault...just with storms and old houses they may become uncovered with the sand shifting...just as a part of an old fence did while we were there. Maintanence was very responsive to come out and bury it since it was rusty and sharp sticking up out of the sand.

The pictures make the house look a lot brighter than it actually is. The updated part upstairs is very nice, but the rest of the house is very dingy looking because of its age. And, some if the furniture is very uncomfortable.

We had a great vacation, but were let down a bit when we first walked into the house. After we got used to its quirks, everything was fine.

Also, in the description of the house it says there are no DVD players, but in fact there are two if them.

This home has seen it's better days. The kitchen was a disaster. The dishwasher did not get the dishes clean, so we hand washed everything, once before we used it and once afterwords. Beds were OK, only one bathroom was what I would call nice. One bathroom had no air conditioning vent so it was hot all the time. So was the kitchen. The quaintness wore off afer a couple of days. Would definitely not stay here again.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that you had those challenges with the property. We will be sure to pass on your comments to the owner. We will have to check out the dishwasher if it is not working properly. I didn't see any work orders put in for it. This is one of our most rustic beach homes. We do have people who love it's charm and rent it year after year.

A big, ole rambling house, may be haunted, bring more friends.

Left on 06/07/2012 for a stay in May 2012

I was thrilled with this find! The rep from Rrob was great, the owner accepted my offer and because of the number of beds in this old, rambling house, I was able to invite another family to stay with us over the long weekend. The beds were so comfortable. The house was fun to explore. We came during a noreaster and the wind was ferocious. The kids all decided the house was haunted because of all the noise. We were forced inside a lot and the tables were a blessing for groups to gather. The west deck also allowed us to go outside and be protected from the wind. I loved walking to the pier. The kids walked to the dunes and climbed and also walked to a shopping center with an ice cream shop. The limited number of showers (as we did not use the corner hall bath except for washing faces) was the only "hold up" but the men used the outside shower so it wasn't a big issue. An extra fridge!! We even had a musician to play the piano! The bonus room is really a nice bedroom. Rascoe was fun.

      Awesome

Left on 12/08/2010 for a stay in November 2010

My stay at the Rascoe was exactly what I was looking for in an Outer Banks Cottage. It was like being a young girl again visiting the Outer Banks. If those walls could talk and actually they did. Family photos and history of the house, etc. You could see how the family has loved and enjoyed this house. The only negative thing I can say (and the only reason I didn't rate it a 5) is the living room furniture cushions were very hard and needed some cleaning. That room would be much more comfortable and cozy with softer cushions. Had to walk through a very small bath to access one upstairs sleeping area but that was no problem. Being right on the ocean was fabulous. No dune to cross over to access the beach. I only wish it were available for rental in the summer months after school is out. If you are looking for luxury stay somewhere else. If you are looking for a taste of Old Nags Head you will love it just as I did!!!

Staying at the Rascoe was like living in a museum.

Left on 05/26/2010 for a stay in May 2010

The Rascoe was great in many ways; we especially enjoyed the antiques, the old upright piano, and the family pictures. What can we say about the location? It is perfect with the ocean on one side and Jockey's Ridge on the other. There are a couple things that could use some updating: the living room furniture is not very comfortable, some of the door knobs kept falling off, and the refrigerator in the kitchen did not work.
All of these things did not, however, detract from our stay. Thank you Rascoe family.

Back to the Future Nags Head style

Left on 09/24/2009 for a stay in September 2009

This historical home takes you back to a day of simpler life. From the wood floors to the kitchen on the back of the house. The oceanside covered porch is wonderful. We had so much fun cooking in the kitchen and having dinners on the huge wooden table then fishing right out the front door. Thank you Resort Realty for the ease in us renting this property and making this a special vacation for all. I highly reccomend this property to anyone that appreciates history and old Nags Head style homes. Until next year!

My stay at Rascoe was a little dispointing because we rent the house without seeing it first. It was not as up to date as the other home we rents.I don't think I would rent it again. The veiw was great. I love the fact that I could walk right down to the ocean. If the house was morer up to date I would rent it again.

      ocean front vacation

Left on 07/16/2009 for a stay in May 2009

We rented this home for 2 weeks. We truly enjoyed the location of the home being right on the beach, but the home had many items that needed improvements. We would not rent this home again because much of the furniture was old and uncomfortable. Because of the set-up of the house,
the bathrooms are inconvient because you have to walk through them to get to another part of the home. The home definitly takes you back in time, and we like that because we also own a historical home, but it needed to be cleaner and a little more up to date for a rental.
