There were a few positives, the top being the general location. It's a very nice beach, not at all crowded this time of year. From the top level deck, the views of the ocean by day and the moonrise by night were really nice.
Just about everything else, however, was incredibly poor. Not to sound like a laundry list of complaints, but it's reality. I've been vacationing OBX since the 1980's, renting homes from Duck to Salvo - this was by far the worst.
The house is in need of so much repair and maintenance it cannot be all captured here. We were greeted by getting stuck in foot deep sand in the driveway. Entering the house there were dead houseflys randomly about and an ant infestation in the kitchen and laundry room. There was a bucket of cigarette buts left on the deck from the previous rental. The furniture is filthy, stained carpet, walls, and ceiling. Many windows not functional or missing screens, including broken screens coming off the frame for the sliding doors upstairs, which I had to keep resetting from the wind all week to keep from blowing away. Plumbing and hardware fixtures were old. The musty aroma on the bedroom level was pronounced.
Prior to booking, in questioning some posted reviews from previous guests from citing similar concerns with Resort Reality, I received a direct confirmation that many of these very same issues were no longer a problem, and in fact maintenance had inspected the house and all was good.
Rr responded to my initial call and dispatched an exterminator and maintenance. The maintenance issues were so significant that not much could be done, the sand was shoveled a few days later. I was promised an adjustment to the rental price. They continually said a "new owner" would be addressing these issues going forward, which is of no concern for my rental week. Many calls, a visit to their office, and 3 weeks later - not even a response yet! I think RR may have been good with a better house - but this one was a miserable fail!
Location is everything!!

We had a wonderful time, we loved where the house was, it was set up well.
The only things we didn't like is the interior needed a lot of work. Furniture was comfortable but dirty. There were some issues with downstairs plumbing.
I know this year was very wet but the shower at end of hall awful! The place needs a lot of updates.Resort Staff Great!
great OBX expereance

Great beach location, beach was not crowded. Location is at end of resort but that puts you out of the congestion. Cottage is very well maintained with excellent view of ocean and beach.
We were not able to stay here

We are so sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. I do see that we had to move you and your family to another home. I trust that you enjoyed your stay at Finch Hill, and we hope to see you again next year.
Great location for ocean front.

The service received was wonderful. The home was nice(could use some updating). What we liked about the home was the layout, liked all bed rooms on same floor.
What we liked best was the location of the property,it is near the location where we fish.
Not a big fan on the drive way and what we had to go through just to park the car.
Great family getaway!

We enjoyed our stay at Seamist for the second year in a row. We did find there were many maintenance problems that we feel should be addressed considering the cost for a week's stay. We like the layout of the home and its wonderful access to the beach. We did have a very leaky downstairs toilet that was addressed during our stay. The porch furniture is in bad shape with several exposed nails/screws that could hurt someone or damage clothing. The dining room window screen is just about detached and there are leaks during a rainstorm. On the upside, we enjoyed the space and the ac worked great! Thanks again Read more

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your rental home. Resort Realty appreciates hearing from our guests, as their comments are vital for us to continue improving our services and the homes we represent. The problems you mentioned have been brought to the attention of our Management staff so that they do not occur again and the leaking toilet was fixed during your stay. The homeowners will also be made aware of your comments so that they may update their home and the outdoor wooden deck furniture. Again, thank you for your time and we hope you will vacation with us in the near future.
The view and access to the beach were wonderful.

The smell was a little damp and the fireplace was a little gross to look at.
The view and the layout of the house we really enjoyed. The house needs a little work.

We stayed at Seamist the week of September 17, 2011. Upon arrival, the house smelled musty as if it hadn't been used in a while although the calendar said it was rented the entire month of Septamber.
The stove was in poor shape. The burners were tilted which made it difficult to cook. Also, the cookware left a lot to be desired.
Also, there was sand in between the sofa cushions which really made the place feel dirty.
We will definitely not stay at Seamist again.
This home was just ok

The house was clean and decently furnished, with a great beach front location. We felt the appliances needed updating and the service was just ok. We did not think we got a value at peak season with this property though, it seemed over priced. A deck to the beach, better appliances and service from the rental company would have made the trip much nicer. Read more

This house is not "rustic" it's rundown and not maintained.

Pay close attention to the description of this house. This house is not rustic, it is run down and not maintained. This house is missing many small basic items and some appliances didn't work.
The view is wonderful and the upstairs layout is perfect!
There is a jack and jill bathroom that is connected to the two queen bedrooms and is awkward and could easily be split into two private bathrooms. It would be a bonus!
If this house rented for $900 a week I would have given it a 5 star value!
I didn't get what I paid for. Read more

Thank you for your review of our property Seamist. The home is described on line as rustic and lists the amenities that are in the home. Unfortunately you did not list what appliances did not work, and by checking work orders for the home we have had no other report of appliances not working. Please know that our maintenance department strives to correct any and all issues with the home and its amenities as soon as notification is received. All of our homes are individually owned by private owners, and they are the ones who choose the décor in the home. We will certainly bring your suggestions for improvement to the owners. Thank you again for your candor.
Great family time in a less-crowded location.

The beach area was not crowded and a great place to spend time with our kids. The house was comfortable, but lacked a little in the kitchen supplies. Bedrooms were clean and just what was described on the website. The house needed a little minor maintenance, like lights and fans that wouldn't work. The location was close enough to the highway that it was convenient, but the area was still quiet and family-friendly.
Great week with the kids and grandson.

Our family has rented 3 different properties from Resort Realty. Each has had its different strengths. We enjoy the spaciousness of our accomodations and proximity to the beachfront. Our only negative in this particular rental was the lack of wifi for our computer/ipod accessibility.
Loved the View
Left on 09/12/2010 for a stay in August 2010 | Gary
great view so even when the weather isn't nice the view is, convenient to the beach, (needs hot pads, more than one dish towel, needs 10-12 inch none stick skillet, ant infestation), fyi- the airhandler appears to be leaking on the structure, the top floor was a little on the warm side, the sheets and towels was really nice. I would have liked to have had a shovel for the sand on the driveway but that's probably just me. A relaxing enjoyable vacation for all.
Sorely in need of updating
Left on 08/05/2010 for a stay in July 2010 | loves OBX
This house is in a great location but was so dirty and poorly maintained I will never consider renting it again in its present condition. The vanities were deteriorating, all the faucets were corroded, exhaust fan in bath did not work, panled walls were coated with dust, the second floor a/c unit did not work, and the furniture was flimsy, Upon arrival we had to wash all the dishes and silverware and call the cleaning service back to scrub 1" of grime out of the drip pans on the stove. Definately not worth the $$ when other oceanfront houses for the same price are far better mainained.
A bit disappointing

This home could use some tlc. It is an older home. It is obvious that the home has been through some amazing storms. The exterior looks new, that's a good start. The inside is in need of repair from what appears to be extreme water damage. The exterior stairs leading up to the hot tub area is in need of repair also. The home is listed as oceanfront - true there is no home in front of it, but the house itself is situated as a second lot home. There is no private walk to the beach and the street access is in horrible shape. There must have been a home in front of this one before because there is exposed rusted rebar sticking out of the sand - our friend backed into it while playing bocce ball and suffered a very nasty scratch to his calf. The home is in an area of multiple condemned homes, so I guess the owner is lucky to have a decent dune in front of the home to protect it. The parking for the house is not good. Sand has completely washed over the driveway making it a total mess, especially when it rains. We had a wonderful week of good weather, though. The home has potential, but it needs a tremendous amount of work. Small things like new mattresses and new comforters would be a quick facelift. The bath connecting what appear to be 2 masters has severe water damage to the floor. The vinyl tile is obviously stained from tons of water. The hall closet is a nightmare - don't open it and look up! The ceiling is falling down. I didn't look up long enough but the owners or rental company should make sure that there isn't any black mold in the drywall that is crumbling. I decided not to store the towels in the closet just in case and we never opened that door again. Read more

Thank you for your response on Flip Key. Communication we receive from our guests is a great way to gauge what we are doing right, be made aware of what we can improve, and in both cases are very much appreciated. We are very sorry you had some concerns and thank you for bringing them to our attention!
We pride ourselves in assuring homes are in proper working order and fit our guests needs. This is an older cottage but considerable improvements were made in the past couple of years. This cottage has been recently updated with new siding, new washer/ dryer, dining room set, mattresses in the adult rooms, flat screen TVs (3 out of 4 TVs are flat screen) and a few other items. We will share this feedback with regards to steps to the cottage and staining on the bathroom flooring with the owners of the property and this may be something to be addressed before the next rental season.
Thank you for booking your vacation with Resort Realty and we hope to see you again next year!

I am sorry to say that this is the first house in our 8 consecutive years of visits that was very disappointing. We found it to be in bad need of updating and a GOOD THOROUGH cleaning. Both sets of glass sliding doors did not lock, there were crickets in the kitchen cupboards, the kitchen supplies (ie dishes, utensils) were sorely lacking and in terrible shape, the outside hose sprayers were broken, the outside shower door would not stay closed, and again, the whole place was uncomfortably dirty and in bad shape.
Like I stated before, we have always had great luck picking out houses on the internet, and while not perfect, they were on a completely different level when it came to cleanliness and amenities.
The only saving grace is the house's location; that was nice.

Prop # 6508, Seamist. Dates of stay - 29 Aug to 12 Sept 2009. Good location to the beach. Arrival day fine. Second day found ANTS on the kitchen counter by the sink. We purchased ant traps. House had obvious water damage inside; no repairs done to the ceiling. Paint chips on the floor were a daily occurrence. We had sand on the furniture, tables and chairs, and floors (both levels) daily from all the drafts (windows, sliding glass doors, entry door). The worse issue was a smell; couldn?t figure out what or from where it came until few days into the vacation. Opened the cabinet door under the sink (right side) & there was a large pot with about 4? of water, pieces of onion, some other things floating & mold! Disgusting & Gross! We cleaned the pot then put bleach in it just to prevent further mold. So, each day we were ?squishing? ants, wiping everything down and vacuuming to get rid of sand and paint chips. Not one of the nicer houses we have rented in the past.
Resort Realty staff has always provided professional and courtesy customer service, and catered to our every need without hesitation. We will be back in 2010 to rent again ? but not this property ? ever.

We had a wonderful time in the Outer Banks as usual, but the rental we stayed in was not top notch. We realize that the salt water is hard on everything, but the place really needed some repairs. There were many locations in the house (around windows and at the roof) where you could see evidence of leaking water.

I would highly recommend this rental. One of the best features for our family was the den. We didn’t need this as a bedroom so it became a great play room for the kids. The adults could enjoy the living room and the kids were right nearby.
We were 6 adults and 4 children and very comfortable in the house, plenty of room.
The beach was so close just out the driveway and we were on sand in a moment.
We found everything we needed for a wonderful family week vacation.
The ocean view was great but the house definately needs some wor

The stove had one burner that was broken. There was a short in the bathroom light downstairs. Dark and dingy inside. The fans were loaded with dust and dirt. The house needs major improvements inside. Paneling was warped in one of the bedrooms and insulation could be seen.
