Disappointed with the furnishings -- furniture pictured in the rental picture was missing when we arrived. We could not sit comfortably as a family around the TV and had to bring in patio furniture(!) Pet friendly, but our dog came home with fleas. Really big roaches (palmetto bugs) invaded kitchen and main floor every night. Not a fuzzy feeling. Smoke detector beeping upon arrival (why didn't clean up crew take care of this?)

This was a nice place to stay, pleaty of room & close enough to walk to the beach. A convienent place for our 3 children & familys to come together and enjoy each other but lots of areas to have some solitude when needed. Lots of toys & entertainment equipment. Seaside staff was very friendly and helpful. Everything was clean, but had some toilet issues. I would definately rent this again if comming to this area.

Some of the statements on the website about this house are not accurate. First, the "beautiful ocean view" is just a sliver of ocean visible between two houses. I think the description was written before some other houses were built. Second, be sure to understand that the "600 feet to beach access" is really 600 feet to a sidewalk that leads to the public beach access. The beach is really about a 5 minute walk away. Finally, the refrigerator is small for a house that sleeps 16 people.

Penguin hill worked out great for our group this year. The house is in walking distance to Beach for the kids and the pier for my fishing in the am.
Location sells this house. Close to everything.
House was clean but you can tell that a busy rental season is taking its toll on house. Showers could use a little more attention.
Pool and hot tub were used everyday. Only wish that there was more room around pool. Pool water temp was great.
When weather gets around 100 and humid the top level will get warmer than rest of house. At 6 pm it will be 79 degrees up stairs until sun goes down,...but is tolable.
Stove needs a little work. Missing handle for top burner.
Refrig first day did not work but we turned off and lowered it and worked fine rest of week.
Large Dining room table works out great!
Rained hard last day and one of the bed rooms leaked a little thru doors and ceiling.
Bring your own towels...Towels provided are like sandpaper.
Also arive early and call Rental facility and let them know you are there and they will call you when house is ready. We were able to ge tin at 11:30 am...Nice.

We actually rented the house the week after beach week and I am not sure if that had anything to do with the condition of the house but there were holes in the walls,the house had a bad smell when we arrived the first day of our stay and we were not able to get in the house until ten o'clock that night because the cleaning company had to come out and clean the house again, the carpet was stained and smelled bad, vomit on the outside pool fence just above the kitchen deck. The filter in the upstairs living room/kitchen area looked like it had not been cleaned in years. Upstairs was very hot in the evenings and I am guessing that was due to the fact that there were no shades on the windows. Overall alot of money for a very disappointing home. Will not rent this home again.

The pictures don't do the house justice. We had an amazing time. SeaSide provided everything we needed and everything was in great condition. The house is close to the beach access right by our favorite pier. Fantastic location. Scenic decks. I can't wait to book this house again!!!

Penguin Hil is a great centrally located OBX house with Corolla to the north and Hatteras to the south. Beach access is a nice paved, landscaped walkway. The large dining table was perfect for our family. The kitchen was well stocked with any utensil we needed. The weather was cool the week we were there in april so we enjoyed the gas logs for cozy evenings by the fireplace.
We also discovered a local ice cream place within walking distance of the house that we fell in love with. We definitely recommend the "Snowbird" for the best soft serve ice cream. The house also has Wi-Fi which was not listed on the property details. We made some great memories at Penguin Hil and will certainly stay here the next time we're in the Nags Head area. -

Was told 3 different things when asked about check in/early check in policy. The company's 4 o'clock check in policy kills first day of the vacation. I would never rent from an agency that has a 4 o'clock check in ever again. When I mentioned that I had been told of a 2 o'clock chek in when I reserved the house, I was told that I was wrong because "no one here would say that." Well their's was the only company that I called this year, so I felt like I was being called either a liar or stupid.
We had maintenance out to check light in pool so we could swim in the evenings safely, the person who came out said they would go out and check, and then never fixed it or told us anything, he just dissappeared.
One of the staff forgot to follow through with one of the payments that I made over the phone using my checking account's debit card, so it never posted to my account. I had to call back the following month to make the payment again. No one could explain what happened, they had the phone call on record, but could not explain what happened to the record of my banking information from that day. That makes me nervous about giving my banking info to this agency.
I did not have a good customer service relationship with this agency. I reserved the property back in January, but as it got closer to summer and I would call to put more money down or to ask a question, they had a kind of cavalier, "take it of leave it" attitude.
I guess they figure we would have no other place to go because the area is popular and places go quick after the winter. In fact, they seemed aggravated with me when I mentioned that my deposite was never deducted from my bank account, and when I asked what the employee who took down all of my banking info did with my debit account info, i never got an answer. I would vacation in the outer banks again because I love the area, but I would go to a different agency.
The house at Penguin Hill was lovely. -

The house was very nice...we had a great time. It was only a few minutes walk to the beach. The only negative was that alot of the"extra" amenities they provided were unusable. Such as boogie boards, bicycles, beach chairs, goggles. They were rusted and or broken. I would rent this place again though.

What a great home to share both with friends and family. It is excellent for young children. The pool and hot tub were a daily must do and the sand in the back yard had our little ones digging for hours. We adults enjoyed the pool table, mutiple bathrooms, and hot tub. The decks were the perfect place for peace in the mornings and evenings; there was no shortage of them! We also appreciated all the kitchen tools, scenic views, and quick access to the beach and local stores. This house felt like home.

We stayed at Penguin Hil Sep 2010 with family and friends. The house is clean and a great floorplan for groups. The one major downside to the house is the pool area. There is literally no space for lounge chairs around the pool (it is fenced-in) and there are no lounge chairs out there.

We arrived late and keys were left in box outside Seaside which was very nice.
Upon our arrival to the rental house, we found the kitchen to be completely and utterly disgusting. I spent the first 2 1/2 hours of my vacation cleaning only part of the kitchen. The cabinets were glazed with cooking grease and some sort of sticky soda or syrup. There were ants all over the counters and floors, the utencil drawer was full of debris and dead ants. The entire week we were there, I washed 75% of all the dishes, cups, pot and pans.
I called management and made them aware of the situation and they were very apologetic and the supervisor of the housecleaning crew called me directly. She offered a free clean upon us leaving the rental.
Overall our trip was great. The house was fully stocked, very quiet and spacious.
I hope this helps the management and housekeeping crew to make sure that the cleaning crews take their time cleaning each house and not to get in and get out as fast as they can.Response from Seaside Vacations* - 09/03/2010

We really liked this house. It is spacious and comfortable - with lots of equipment and things to use left there by the owners, which is very considerate, (it would have been helpful to know some of that prior to the visit.), but very nice. I especially liked that the place was mostly carpeted, except where you would not want it to be. Nice decking. Nice, modest pool, which was very comfortable for lounging with the little kids. Grill worked; bikes did not. Outdoor shower a plus for rinsing off sand from the beach. Short walk to the beach. One slightly annoying point was a non-functional dishwasher; which we reported to the rental office; and someone came out, but we never heard anymore about it. We would definitely rent this place again!

Summer beach combers

House was very spacious. Loved all the various decks and the pool. Hot tub was boxed in, would have preferred it more open. Could have used more silverware and pans. Since there were 12 of us, we wound up buying plastic eating utensils.

I would like to begin by saying that we have no complaints whatsoever with Seaside Vacations! You guys were great. Would we use Seaside Vacations again? Absolutely! Would we recommend Seaside to friends? You bet! Would we stay in Penguin Hill again? Probably not! Now don't get me wrong...it is a nice house. I love the layout, the room sizes, the porches. However this house has some issues...it is advertised as being able to sleep 14 and if all that you are going to do is sleep and go to the beach then 14 or 16 people can stay here comfortably. However, if you plan to spend time together INSIDE of the house...forget it! There isn't anywhere close to enough seating for everyone in any one room. The teens ended upstairs with us every night because there was NO seating in the gameroom area. Our other BIG complaint was the kitchen. Yes, 14-16 people can sleep here but if you cook and eat in like we do 14-16 people cannot all eat. There were only enough plates for 11 people and only enough silverware for about 10! The pots and pans are in VERY sad shape and some of them were even rusty and unusable. There were two coffee makers - neither of them worked! We went and bought one (which we brought home with us). The only thing that we weren't wild about was the proximity to the beach, but that is anyone's fault - we picked the house, afterall. We will just plan to stay closer to the beach next year!

Penguin Hil is a beautiful home, but there are some important potential drawbacks you should be made aware of before renting this property.
1) The "bedroom" downstairs does not have a door. Yes, that means it is wide open to the pool table and creates a lack of privacy for anyone utilizing that room. If your group isn't going to use it or if the guests in that room do not care about privacy, then maybe it isn't as much of a concern.
2) The beds in that same downstairs "bedroom" are very small. It is a pyramid bunk and trundle setup and we had two adults sleeping there. Their legs hung off the edges and this made for an uncomfortable sleep.
3) The most important concern was spotted on our last night of stay. We spotted a cockroach that came in through the kitchen door on the third floor. Whether this is endemic or just a fluke, we don't know, but it is a definite concern.
With all those negatives out of the way, we cannot stress it enough that we truly enjoyed our stay.
1) The hot tub was fabulous and was even usable in the rain because it was shielded by the deck above.
2) The pool was equally fantastic, and the pool table was in great shape.
3) The wet bar in the basement was very convenient as well.
4) The trail to the beach is very close to the house and is well landscaped, making for a pleasant walk to the beach that makes up for the distance.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but we have concerns about renting the property again and would caution others to investigate the issues we had by talking them over with either the landlord or the rental agency (or both). -

So the neighborhood is beautiful and the home location is perfect...but,issues started immediately and became a not-so-funny running joke. This home needs a thorough makeover! Seaside Realty came to our rescue reparing a shower,a new grill and basketball hoop w/in 24hrs which was great, but we had issues all week long - not enuf silverware for the size of the house, no serving platters, a malfunctioning toaster, no bikes as advertised (tho the realtor came to our rescue), poison ivy all over the yard making it hard to play in it, especially with our dogs (this is a pet-friendly home!),outdoor stairwells overgrown with weeds making them inaccesible, etc. The first day we requested that the home be re-cleaned as we could write our names in the dust on the windowsills and some side tables -- when the guy came to dust he informed us "that sort of cleaning was only done once a year" and only dusted the edges of the beds where it was the dustiest. Kinda disconcerting! Only once a year?!?!?! ICK! ALso, there really is not enough seating in the house to watch tv together -- there is only enough couch seating for about 6 people and it is a home for 16! The rec room didn't have a couch -- awkward! The teens had a room to gather in but nowhere to sit comfortably and watch a movie or get out of our hair. That being said, we all had a good time, regardless. The kids loved the volleyball court and played lots of badminton. The hot tub and pool were nice tho not much room to loll around the pool (no decking area). Very easy access to the ocean and to Jockey's Ridge and the 4th of July fireworks seemed like a private showing off the desk of this home. The Nags Head Pier is so close! Lock up your bikes; one of ours that we had brought along was stolen from under the house (we had left it unlocked; our fault). Fun shops nearby and a Sonic for teenagers to drive to for eats! Lots of dolphins and sunshine during our week at the beach. With a bit of updating, it's a great house~

Penguin Hil was everything that we thought it would be. We have rented other houses in the area and really like being between the roads in Old Nags Head Place. It is the perfect area. We could sit on the front porch in the mroning and watch the sun rise and sit on the back deck in the evening and watch the sun set. Being a pet friendly home our daughter's dog had the best time for his first trip to the ocean. The only thing I would change would be to heat the pool. The water was a little chilly the second week in June. It was great to have internet available in the house for those of us that needed to stay connected. Always a favorite being able to see Jockey's Ridge and all the kites.
