Description from the owner
We call the cottage Bufflehead after the small black-and-white ducks on the pond. The house is small, 1100 square feet. It faces west to an osprey pole and 767 acres of conservation land across the pond β Ram Pasture and Sanford Farm. Itβs 1000 feet from the Atlantic ocean at the foot of the pond, which you can see from the deck and hear if there is surf. An osprey, mute swans, a snowy egret and Canada geese are usually visible on the pond. Thereβs often good surfing at nearby lifeguarded Cisco beach, 1000 feet on a dirt road or by kayak on the pond. Downtown Nantucket is an easy 3-mile, level bike ride, mostly along the new Hummock Pon...Read more

Additional Location Information
The cottage, "Bufflehead," is on Hummock Pond, which is two miles long. Bufflehead faces west to an osprey pole and 767 acres of conservation land across the pond β Ram Pasture and Sanford Farm. Itβs 1000 feet from the Atlantic ocean at the foot of the pond, which you can see from the deck and hear if there is surf. An osprey, mute swans, a snowy egret and Canada geese are usually visible on the pond. Thereβs often good surfing at lifeguarded Cisco beach, 1000 feet down a dirt road or by kayak on the pond.
Enjoy the solitudeβviews, birds, quiet, napping in the hammock, smelling the sea breeze, reading a good book. Thereβs also room for activityβswimming, body surfing, surfboarding, shell collecting, kayaking, fishing, jogging, biking, hiking and nature, wildlife and architecture photography. There are often striking sunsets over the pond. Downtown Nantucket is just three miles away, an easy bike ride. Nantucket is an authentic 1840s whaling village, with a 1686 house, windmill, and superb whaling museum. Itβs also an arts center with three theater companies and dozens of artists, sculptors, photographers and writers who call it home.
There's off road parking at Bufflehead for three cars. You can bring your own car on the Steamship Authority ferry, or you can bike and walk and use taxis, and the Nantucket Regional Transportation Authority busses, or rent a car on the Island. Cape Air and Nantucket Air serve Nantucket from Boston, Providence and other cities.

Left on 03/14/2013 for a stay in July 2006
Bufflehead has been for my family, in a word, heaven. Its creature comforts, layout and style, together with a sublime location (right on a freshwater pond, steps away from the atlantic and a gorgeous Cisco Beach, and across from acres and acres of undisturbed nature), guarantee any guest instant serenity, bliss, euphoria and delight. We have stayed at Bufflehead 11 times beginning in 1998 -- which speaks volumes of how much we love it -- and can't wait for our next visit this year. The photos Peter has posted just tell part of the story. You have only to hear the sounds (the surf, the lapping pond, the birds on the wing), feel the breeze on your face, see the hundreds of stars at night, and gaze on the deck at the magnificent sunsets to more fully appreciate the charm and gifts of Bufflehead. It provides the essence of the Nantucket experience and I most highly recommend it.
