Description from the owner
This caboose will accommodate a couple or a small family. It has one bedroom with a double bed and a single daybed in the "great room". Small children could sleep in the cupola with sleeping bags. I have one in the drawers beneath the captain's bed in the bedroom. The caboose has been fully renovated, has a galley with stove, convection microwave, sink and small fridge. There is a full bath with shower. This is a work of love and packs a lot into a small 200 square foot space. The patio has a gas grill and a gas "hobo fire pit". Come and create memories in the "Valley of Virginia" The caboose is heated with a "Mr. Slim" heat pump but the flo...Read more

Norfolk, VAFun in the Caboose!
Left on 10/25/2012 for a stay in October 2012
My 89-year-old dad, who loves trains, wanted to go see the leaves change, so I was excited to find this little caboose! We stayed two nights and then went on to Cass WV to ride the steam trains! Natural Bridge was the perfect stopover point for us - and the caboose was so clean and comfortable! (I was prepared for the shower to be not so great, as often happens in situations like this - but I was very pleasantly surprised - it was great!) We loved discovering all the little details - Tom's Train songs CDs, a great Bose system, a charming train library - how did Tom get all that cool stuff in that little caboose? Ha! And what a hoot to drive up to a flashing RR sign - Tom thought of everything! The caboose was so much fun, and it made the trip so memorable... dad is already telling all his friends about it!

Roanoke, VAThe perfect getaway!
Left on 10/15/2012 for a stay in October 2012
We had hoped for a quick, quiet weekend getaway, and what a great place we found at the caboose! Attention to detail, comfort, convenience - Tom has thought of everything. Despite the chilly evening, we grilled steaks and enjoyed a bottle of wine around the fire pit. On Saturday we went to Lexington Valley Vineyards and had a wine tasting and a picnic. The fact that the caboose and the vineyard are dog-friendly made our stay even nicer, as we don't like leaving our rescue Bichon at home! We hope to return with our granddaughter, who is a big Thomas fan. She will love it!

Chester, VirginiaPerfect anniversary Weekend Getaway!!!
Left on 09/17/2012 for a stay in August 2012
Like to take the road less traveled, off the beaten path then you'll find this lovingly restored Caboose fits the bill!
As our three-year-old grandson would say, wow! and wow! and wow! We hope to return one day with him so he can experience the ambiance, hot dogs and smores from a hobo fire.
Find your way to the nearby Pink Cadillac for some delicious omelets and from scratch homemade biscuits.
We were thrilled by the animal antics at Safari Park -- go early in the day, especially if it's warm, as the animals are more active. Hold on tight to your feed bucket!
Celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary, we wanted something memorable. Our weekend getaway at the Caboose was just that!
Toot! Toot! to Tom!

What a fun experience! We called at 1:00pm on a Sat. for a Sat. arrival, and Tom got the caboose ready for us. My 12 year old loved it. Sleeping in a caboose, smores over the fire pit, and a visit by Jingles. It was perfect. Perfect location for the Natural Bridge, the zoo or safari park!

Left on 05/14/2012 for a stay in May 2012
The caboose is really cozy and delightful for 2 people to stay . We also really enjoyed the outdoor firepit and sat by the fire in the evening enjoying the moments.
Spent the day shopping and antiquing in the area.
Eat at the Pink Cadallac and it was "fun" and filling...
Also had dinner at the Hotel at natural Bridge .It was a buffet was a dissapointment but with all that was going on it town we were limited to places for dinner. Coming back to our caboose and firepit on the patio made up for it. We will eb back. Tom also has a delightful cabin next door and that would be great for 4 people. The couple staying there and my husband and I had "You show me your and I'll show you mine exchange. -

Left on 12/08/2011 for a stay in November 2011
My husband and three year old son were very excited to stay at the Caboose and I have to admit, being eight months pregnant I was a little worried about comfort and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. The Caboose is in such a scenic and relaxing setting and of course hearing my sons squeals of delight only made me that much more happy I decided to join them. You can tell the Caboose was restored with love and great effort. My family will return when we can stay longer and enjoy the amenities of the surrounding areas, if we can get our son to leave the Caboose.
For sleeping, I was very happy with the memory foam mattress, very comfy and the linens were comfortable as well. Only one suggestion for sensitive sleepers like myself is that you may want to bring your own pillow, I was happy I had.
For eating, we grilled our dinner on the grill provided that appeared new and worked very well and we enjoyed the hobo pit for roasting marshmallows. All of the kitchen appliances worked well and we appreciated that they had a supply of eating and cooking utensils, down to the spears for roasting marshmallows.Response from Thomas C. Bradshaw Jr. - 12/10/2011

The caboose is only 2 miles from the Virginia Safari Park and 2 miles from the famous Natural Bridge. Historic Lexington is 15 minutes away and has much to see and do. Great restaurants are in Lexington.

The owners have thought of everything you could need to stay in such a cute, cozy property! Be prepared for tight quarters (it's a caboose, folks!) inside but enjoy the outside as much as you can. Everything has a train theme - kids' books, Dvds, CDs, lighting, throws, etc. We even found marshmellows in the 1/2 size refrigerator to roast on the forks (provided) over the hobo pits (both wood and gas, with split wood provided).
Every nook and cranny has been put to use to provide all amenities - linens, soap, shampoo, cooking utensils and containers, paper towels, extra pillows, blankets, an electric fan, lists of nearby attractions and restaurants - I can't think of a thing that was left out!! Obviously, the owners have traveled extensively themselves to think of all these items!
We enjoyed seeing the actual Natural Bridge and Foamhenge (a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Stonehenge). We also visited several nearby towns for sightseeing. Not sure what we expected when we made the reservation, but I am sooo thankful to Tripadvisor for its reviews to help us choose this wonderful, unique vacation spot!!Response from Thomas C. Nearby, is the Safari Park, Natural Bridge and the Natural Bridge Zoo, all within 2 miles. Just 10 minutes away is the Historic village of Lexington which is a tourist mecca itself. See lexingtonvirginia.com. Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee are buried here. There are museums at Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University. Beautiful Blur Ridge Parkway is nearby. Trails abound in the scenic area as do rivers and streams.

A really great & 'different' spot to stay over, either while in transit (as we were, via motorcycle) or for a brief get-away (from both home & the typical motel/resort type accommodations) -- we'll definitely return & spend a bit more time (than just 2 nights) at some point in the future.

There is much to see and do in our area. Natural Bridge and it's attractions, Natural Bridge Caverns, Natural Bridge Zoo, Virginia Safari Park, Cave Mountain Lake, Blue Ridge Parkway, Trails, Lexington and it's historic sites, The two colleges and their museums. Goshen Pass, and the Peaks of Otter all close by. There is more to do than can be done in a two day stay.

We found that the Kitchen Aide microwave had a problem and promptly replaced it. The daybed in the galley is an antique. As with most antiques, they are not necessarily the most comfortable.

Left on 05/23/2011 for a stay in April 2011
This caboose was a fun place to stay! It was in a convenient location being right off of the interstate, but was set down a country road and you really didn't notice that the highway was near once you were there. It was obvious that the owner put a lot of love and care into renovating it. Everything coordinated with the railroad theme and every inch of space was utilized to make it seem larger than it is. It is a real caboose, so it isn't very big. But the charm and uniqueness made it definitely worth staying there. The owner is very clever. When you pull up in your car, a real Railroad Crossing sign lights up and begins flashing. The patio outside has a gas firepit, which was fun to sit around at night. If you wanted a real fire, there was firewood for that as well. We plan to visit again next year!

Left on 10/16/2010 for a stay in October 2010
Mr. Bradshaw and family:
I cannot thank you enough for helping to squeeze in just one night for Tami and myself now the Mr. and Mrs. Kurt Russell. We were Married on 10/10/10 and for our Honeymoon, we traveled up and down the mountain range from Luray Caverns to Sky Land Resort to Natural Bridge and the awesome Caboose and on to Roanoke. Our favorite stop was at the caboose and we were upset that our stay could not be longer. You have gone out of our way to provide so many things for a passerby such as the gas grill, the gas fire pit and patio layout, all would have been a wonderful place to relax and enjoy an evening around the caboose. I have always been fascinated with Trains from a kid up to my present age 47. I was amazed at the amount of work you have had to do and endure to renovate the old style caboose to make it the most incredible place to stay. I could not help but to look at all the photo's, the books, the magazines and indeed the work to unload and assembly the various parts of the caboose and then to renovate the entire structure. Tami and I very much enjoyed the short stay while trying to take in as many things like the Pink Cadillac, the Natural Bridge, the Wax Museum and the evening light show at the bridge. We will indeed be back for a longer stay and again wish to thank you for allowing us to stop thru.

The caboose has been a work in progress over 10 years. It is now getting a new roof. The hvac system is a Mr. Slim heat pump with two air handling units. The Kitchenaid microwave is also a convection oven. The caboose is getting a new HD TV with a DVD player this week. Many caboose conversions just stick a window air conditioner through the wall for hvac. Many also have a bath separate from the car. The Bose wave radio/CD player is a nice addition. The railroad crossing sign flashing lights that come on when you arrive is a special feature. I have tried to make this unit a very special place for adults and children.

Staying at the caboose was the perfect way to reunite with my friend and her children. The children had a blast playing in and around the caboose, and the ample patio space provided my friend and me a comfortable and beautiful place to chat each night. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the caboose and the ease of staying in such a small space, all thanks to Tom Bradshaw and his vision that came to fruition. Thank you!

Tom Bradshaw was very kind and welcoming. He was there for anything we needed. The caboose was very clean and well kept. The location was very convenient in regards to the natural bridge and other sights. Close to Lexington if a traveler wanted to go into town. While it had a central location the spot felt secluded. Loved the fire pit! We made smore's and grilled out at night. Very romantic and serene!

The Red Caboose is a novelty with value. Despite its small size, it comfortably accomodated 2 adults and 3 children. The proximity of the caboose to all of the Natural Bridge attractions cannot be beat. The patio area was awesome and we enjoyed grilling out and the hobo pit. Feeding the neighbors horses the morning we checked out was a highlight of the trip and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The caboose was fully stocked with everything you needed for a comfortable stay. I highly recommend the Caboose for any, especially train buffs.
