Additional Location Information
What’s so great about Rosetta and the Midlands?
Having owned Jolo Farm for some twenty years we moved down here in 2010. Certainly different from our Sandton home but different in a positive way, people talk of quality not quantity; well there is certainly plenty of quality in this neck of the woods. Working life is different, we farm Angus cattle and run these most wonderful guest cottages which has been exclusively praised by all our guests, most rewarding.
On a great day:
We love to go fishing, there are so many great places, Jan at Wild Fly books some great water for us and advises on what’s attracting the fish. A hike at Highmoor is a must and getting so close to the Giant on a really clear day is just awesome. There is always a possibility of game sighting at Highmoor, Eland are not uncommon and there are plenty of other buck and of course the birdlife is wonderful and at the right time so are the wild flowers.
Mountain biking is also great, there are plenty of quiet dirt roads but if you want real exhilaration then visit the Sappi forests at Howick. There are many great single track trails here which will really test your ability and courage.
If we are in a motoring mood I get out either my 1952 MGTD or my Triumph Daytona polish them up and get out on the Kamberg Road to Giants Castle, beautiful farming scenes wonderful mountain views, avenues of old Oaks ,a nice twisty road, then cruise back through Mooi River and back to our favorite breakfast spot at Blueberry Hill. If we feel the need for a little more adrenalin we cruise down the R103 into the heart of the Midlands Meander stopping off at Abingdon for some great wine produced on the estate and a little lunch, little if we can hold back.
If we feel like a day out we take a Picnic to either Kamberg or Highmoor. A stroll to shake off the cobwebs, breathtaking views with great birdlife, Jackal Buzzard, Woolly Necked Crane, Long Crested Eagle, Fish Eagle, Cape Vulture, the odd Bearded Vulture and plenty of those LBJs which defy identification.
If we want some history
We love the battlefields sites for both the Zulu and Boer wars. Local Museums tell the story of some of this history. There are great Museums at Fort Nottingham ,Mooi River and an excellent one at Ladysmith. A visit to the Nelson Mandela capture site including museum is worth some time for more recent history.
What about Culture
We really had not appreciated that we would be exposed to so much culture. Clearly the Midlands Meander Arts and Crafts is legendary but a visit to Barbz Café on a Saturday night to listen to a musical extravaganza by Cat Simone and Paul, is great for the Soul and often also a jolly good laugh. Plays and other artistic features at the Michaelhouse Theatre are fantastic and the Hilton College Arts Festival is an absolute must.
If we are feeling hungry
Breakfast at Linger Lapa is a great, or just watch life go by at Sapore, Barbz, Maggie’s ,Café Bloom or catch up with the Rosetta locals at the Wine Cellar. Lunch is also good at Sapore and to mingle with some more Midlands locals we drop in to the Nottingham Road Hotel, an old Coach house over a hundred years old still looking the part. Have a great curry at Rawdons Hotel, I guarantee it! A visit to Caversham Mill on the banks of the Lions River is fantastic. Well what about supper, our favorite spots are La Lampara, The Cooking Bear, Skye at Fordoun and Sapore which has a lovely affordable variety. If we really want to spoil ourselves for that special occasion then we go to Cleopatra
If we are feeling in a sporting mood
Golf at Gowrie is fantastic, the course is challenging and always in great condition, Mooi River Country club and Boshoek are also worth a visit. There are plenty of other events, Midmar Mile for those that swim and many Mountain and Road bike races ,too many to mention, take place throughout the year. Comrades marathon takes place in May and attracts athletes from all over the world, we prefer to sit this one out but laud those who participate.
If none of this appeals on the day
Well there are so many other things to do, off to Chocolate Heaven or to indoor archery with the Grandchildren. Spinning and Gym at Fordoun, a quiet run into the mountains, shopping at the farmers markets at Lions River and Karkloof. Attend a cattle auction at Mooi River, Nottingham Road or Lions River.
We have attended some beautiful weddings down here in the Midlands; people come from all over the world to get married in this beautiful place.
And to rest
Well there is so much to do it can be exhausting so at the end of the day we just relax with friends with a glass of good red wine or a classic scotch either on the Stoep or around a friendly log fire. By ourselves we rest with a great book a pair of binoculars and of course a glass of something memorable.
Well that’s what we like to do but there are lots of other attractions , things to do and places to of interest. Check out the Midlands Meander Web Site to see what appeals to you and your family.
Come and visit us, you will have a really great time and return home with great memories and a yearn to return sometime soon.
