Strupak Cottage - spoil yourself in Nelson, NZ
Nelson, South Island, New Zealand
What's Nearby:
Additional Location Information
The Wood is one of the oldest and most sought after neighbourhoods in Nelson due to its proximity to the city centre which is a ten minute walk away. Despite this, the Wood is quiet and friendly, a residential area with a heart. Originally the area was covered in glasshouses in which Nelson's Italian community would grow and sell tomatoes - in fact you can still buy homegrown veggies outside a house on Grove St! Within 200m of the cottage there are a range of small locally owned shops: The Organic Greengocer, a local dairy (corner shop), a post office and the Sprig and Fern Tavern who serve their own range of beer and local wines and winner of the 2012 Nelson Hospitality Awards. Next door to the Sprig and Fern is a fabulous fish and chip shop - place your order, head to the Sprig and the staff will bring your fish and chips to you in the pub - it doesn't get fresher than that!
Other attractions around the Wood include the walk to the Centre of New Zealand, Founders Heritage Park, Miyazu Japanese Gardens, the Queen's Gardens and Huangshi Chinese Gardens.
Or wander into Nelson City, browse the boutiques and stores along streets lined with trees and colourful hanging baskets before sipping a coffee (if in NZ it has to be a "flat white") outside a cafe and watching the world go by. Right in the centre of the city is the Nelson Provincial Museum, and atop the Church Steps is Nelson Cathedral. And be sure to plan your stay to coincide with a Saturday when Nelson's famous Saturday Market springs to life with a colourful array of handmade goods including clothing, pottery, food, jewellery, flowers, vegetables & fruit.

We recently enjoyed a very lovely two and1/2 weeks at Strupak where we were warmly welcomed by Roz. She has done an amazing job of decorating and equipping the cottage to make life there very relaxing. The Wood is a perfect location from which to enjoy Nelson - a short walk downtown and an even shorter walk to the Dairy and the best pub in New Zealand! The view from the kitchen window as the sun rises in the morning is stunning. How often can you hear sheep in the distance as you enjoy a glass of wine in the backyard?!

If you are looking for a place to stay either as a couple or single this is ideal. The property has a real homely feel and is well equipped. There is even a garage to park in (for small to medium size cars).
Its a little bit of a walk to the centre of Nelson but then you do get a quiet location. The local even has great beer and food from the take away next door. -

We stayed 9 days over the Christmas period. A well-equipped and spotlessly clean little house with character. Owner was friendly and helpful and we appreciated the little 'extras' eg bottle of bubbly to celebrate our own special occasion. Shops and amenities nearby, a good base for Nelson and surrounds. Thoroughly recommended.

We enjoyed our stay here a lot, Nelson city great for local food & wine of excellent quality. Local city restaurants, bars, cafes just within walking distance, we had a rental car for exploring further afield (Marlborough & Golden Bay). Rental car probably needed in winter or use a cab.

Our stay in Strupak Cottage was great. This quaint cottage was comfortable, clean and provided everything we needed. A short stroll to the centre of Nelson, a fabulous pub and takeaway outlet down the road. What more could you want - it was a home away from home.

The service before and during our stay at Strupak Cottage was exeptional being we were 12000miles away, myself and my wife Sue could not of asked for more from Roz.The Cottage was so Home from Home our experiance staying there was so enjoyable we could not fault it.
With Nelson only ten minutes walk Dairy shop takeaway and pub oppisite what more could you ask for. The location was handy for visiting Pickton car required, also you can now take a Catermeran direct from Nelson to the Tasman & Abel highly reccomended.
To put our stay into words it was Home from Home and could not beleive it when we saw Strupak Cottage and our stay will be a memory to cherish. -

Just love it! My husband and I have spent time in Strupack for the past 3 years while visiting family members. It is so comfortable and Roz makes it feel like home. She is readily available if any problem should arise and also with valuable information to do with entertainment etc. The location is ideal being so near to the town of Nelson. The little garden is a haven of peace and so well kept as is the cottage. We can heartily recommend this little corner of paradise.

Thank you Roz for sharing Strupak with us. It was a perfect spot for our time in Nelson, so close to the city, supermarket, pub, local fish & chips and our daily walk up to the hill to the centre of NZ. We appreciated the extent to which you had stocked the cottage and best of all the bed was very comfortable offering a couple of the best nights sleep in a while. We have shared the link with friends & family and I'm sure you will have them knocking down your door if they are heading that way.

Roz provides quick and accurate informationon on all aspects of your stay. The cottage is well furnished, tidy and spotlessly clean and most importantly has a very comfortable bed. No worries about parking either on street or there is a garage. It only takes ten minutes to walk into the center of the city through quiet and interesting streets. The perfect location also gives easy access to local walking tracks, gardens and sea front. Whether eating in or at one of the many Nelson restaurants the cottage is a great place to just sit back and relax after the meal.

Strupak is a gorgeous little cottage that has been renovated perfectly. It still has the old charm, but is warm and comfortable. Roz has decorated it tastefully, and furnished it with everything you could need in a "home away from home". Right down to laundry powder and glad wrap. She has also provided pamphlets on Nelson, maps and information on the history of the cottage (plus the one next door which we found fascinating)
It's a convenient walk to town, the bed is comfortable, and she uses quality sheets. The water pressure was good in the shower, and the curtains don't let any light in, which is fantastic for sleep ins.
We loved our stay here and Roz was unbelievably lovely and helpful. -

We were there for our honeymoon and it was exaxtly what we required. Privacy. The weather was fantastic, places to walk were all around us. The location was great as we could walk into town, to the marina and bush walks. Bought lovely glass and pottery to rememeber our stay. The people of Nelson so polite. As for Roz what a lovely lady but I must say she needs to come down our way to Dunedin and Central Otago. Roz maybe we could do a swap. Ann and Pete

This cottage was our first bookabach experience and has totally ruined us for all that follow. The cottage has so much charm and character that it feels like home from the minute you open the door. It's fabulous location does it no harm either, and the cutest little pub across the road makes you feel like a local by your first evening. I really can't rate this place highly enough and we will be back, for a lot longer than a week!

Strupak Cottage has tons of character and originality and is in an ideal location for exploring Nelson City (by foot) and it's surrounds (by car). Parking on the road outside of the cottage was never a problem. It's a small, clean and tidy cottage, ideal accommodation for two. Nice fluffy towels and white bedlinen. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans; ideal for self catering. The small private garden (albeit a little overgrown) was great for sitting in on an evening whilst enjoying a glass of wine. Thanks Roz for the lovely Christmas hamper, Christmas tree and crackers and not forgetting the bottle of 'bubbly' left for us to celebrate New Year. We wouldl definitely stay again and will not hesitate to recommend the cottage to any of our friends visiting NZ.

Left on 03/17/2010 for a stay in March 2010
We had 4 lovely nights at Struoak Cottage the beginning of March. It has been charmingly renovated with lots of quirky additons to the furnishings found after lots of prowling in antique shops I would think. All in fiting with the era. Made it very individual. Good quality linen. Everything was there that we wanted as regards kitchen needs etc.The cottage is much larger than it appears, plenty of room and a large bathroom as well as a dining extension at the back.
We did walk into the town, but it would be better suited to those with transport especially if the weather was poor.
We would not hesitete to return and expect to do so in the future.
Well done Roz. -

This is a charming period cottage with modern amenities. It is beautifully kept and we appreciated a personal welcome from the owner. We felt we were with friends. The crisp bedlinen was a real pleasure after our long flight from Vancouver. It is within easy walking distance of the town and harbour with a small grocery store and post office nearby. We are already planning a return visit in the near future.
