Additional Location Information
"Master songwriter Irving Berlin summed it up rather succinctly, "Everybody ought to have a Lower East Side in their life." A neighborhood so diverse and culturally rich undoubtedly deserves the recognition. After all, society owes an invaluable debt of gratitude to the onetime slum. Much of our nation is descendant from those who passed through here. Not to mention the innovations birthed in this historical doorstep community. The area spawned creative institutions like Yiddish Theater, Vaudeville, ice cream sandwiches, Punk Rock, and certain slang-speak still in common parlance (e.g. "Jonesin'," "On a Bender," “Chum,” “Kick the bucket”). But enough of what was. What is, is a neighborhood composed of a gung-ho populace, and one that continues its evolution in eclectic ways. For the last decade, new architecture has hastily replaced the pre-war tenement standard, thus paving the way for contrasting streetscapes. For instance, trendy glass hotels are flanked by low-rise residential living; upscale hair salons and galleries sitting side-by-side with unisex barbers and tailor shops. Such drastic change also serves as catalyst for nightlife. Restaurants and bars - the old standbys and popular new destinations alike - continue to attract ballooning crowds from across the tri-state area. Of course, it’s hard to ignore the vibrant street art scene on the Lower East Side. For decades, some of the city's finest have graced gates and facades with colorful murals (Chico, Lee Quinones, Keith Haring). These days, graffiti writers near and far paste and paint their part. The iconic wall at Bowery and East Houston, for example, is a coveted space, hosting a revolving door of artwork, including recent placements by Os Gemeos, Kenny Scharf, and JR. Our ancestors couldn’t wait to escape. Now their descendants can’t wait to gain entry!" ( Neighborhood description provided by "Bowery Boogie":http://www.boweryboogie.com/)

We stayed here for just over a week in December-Jan over New Year's, and it was great. The apartment is in an awesome spot on the Lower East Side, and pretty central and easy to get to everything. There's heaps of restaurants and pubs in the area and the metro is really close. The apartment itself is very cute; we used the bed and the couch and no probs at all. Everything was good within the apartment; kitchen, bathroom, TV, radio, internet, etc. The owners were extremely lovely and not only waited for us into the wee hours of the morning when our flight was delayed, but also extended our stay when we needed the place for a few extra nights - no worries at all. Highly recommend this apartment, particularly as it is much cheaper than a hotel/hostel and there's much more to it! :)

I have now stayed in alexandra's apartment for two consecutive years and have had nothing but positive experiences. Alexandra is very helpful from start to finish and straight away you feel in safe hands.
The apartment itself is not luxury and nor does it try to be. It is a renovated are gallery so has a welcoming lived in feeling as opposed to a cold clinical feeling I sometimes experience in hotel rooms.
The apartment is clean and well equipped but let's be honest, if you come to NYC to sit in an apartment then you are in the wrong city! Situated bang in the middle of the Lower East Side you can pretend you are a real New Yorker and avoid all of the tourist traps of Midtown and Times Sq whilst drinking coffee by day and cheap beer by night! I used it as a place to lay my head and that was about it.
If I had to find one negative then I would warn you that the air conditioning is noisy and if used will probably wake you up in the morning. Even if not used, the apartment above has a dripping air Con unit which also has a habit of dripping onto the window ledge. These are really minor issues and would not stop me from staying here again!Response from Alexandra Catalan - 06/01/2012

I am so happy you enjoyed your stay and you are welcome back anytime. It is superb you felt like a real New Yorker as this is exactly the atmosphere we try to create in the apartment.
I was unaware of the the aircon dripping so thank you for your input. I will definitely have that checked out and fixed.
Thanks again ! -

Alexandra is very very kind and openminded.
Smoker allowed!!
The neighborhood is full of bars, alternative shops and restaurants, and very animate by the week end!
The metro is near and you are in Manhattan so close to everything you want to do in NYC!!
Had a really good time there!
Thx alexandra!Response from Alexandra Catalan - 04/01/2012

I am so happy you had a wonderful time!
Just to clarify for other guests: the apartment was once a gallery/boutique and was cleverly converted, consisting of two rooms; one is a living room with sofa bed (which is used as a sleeping area for a third) and a bedroom with a comfortable queen size loft bed. There is also a small, but pleasant kitchen area with fridge, stove top, coffeemaker, and microwave--its perfect for preparing your morning coffee to have with a freshly baked croissant available just down the street, or perhaps a genuine New York bagel from the area that made bagels a household word.
Many artists around the world rent the space and exhibit their work, in addition, art lovers and worldly travelers come to the trendy apartment to experience the eclectic life of a New Yorker.
It was so nice to meet you all and you are welcome back anytime! Hope everything is great in Milan!

Alexandra's apartment on the Lower East Side was exactly what I was looking for during m short-term stay. It's in the heart of the most happening neighborhood, close to tons of tasty restaurants, trendy boutiques and bars, and right next to the subway! Needless to say, navigating the streets with my heavy bags was much easier than anticipated :)
Would definitely recommend this place to anyone coming into the city! -

It was pleasure staying at alexandras place. The apartment was quirky, clean and comfortable, in a great part of the lower eastside. The neighbourhood felt safe and friendly. Problems were fixed really quickly like the toilet flush, and the service before, during and after impeccable. Slight issue on arrival with cards not being accepted at checkin but we worked around this. Definitely plan to visit and rent again. Great value for money. Thanks again for making our stay feel special.

Me and my teenage son spent 6 days here during Summer. We were out at 9am and back in around 10PM. Got what we wanted in basic sleep and shower comfort. Couple of nights it got loud till 10:30PM but quiet after that. Great eat and shops near by. Easy 2 block walk to subway. We liked all the club people at night. It made us feel very fun and safe at night.

This little gem is in a great location, coffee shops, restaurants, sub way stations, walking distance to everything cool and funky.
The owners were able to meet us at any time for the key drop and helped with all our requests. They were alos very quick to respond to emails in the lead up to our stay which made arranging our trip very easy.
This place has everything you need, internet, kitchen, TV, all the bits and bobs, plus its in the best location we could have hoped for.
It really made our NYC stay -

The lower East side is a very nice location for a few days or a week in Manhattan. The space itself is great if you don't want a boring old hotel room, and the accommodations are way more complete than you would find in any "suites" type hotel.

my partner and i stayed here for two weeks and from the moment we checked in, the service and apartment were absolute perfection. very close to everything you can think of (laundro-mat, Restaurants, Subway grocery stores, delis etc) the highlight of the apartment would have to be the loft bed with the t.v mounted at the foot of the bed it made the nights that we spent in so comfortable it was like we were home. i plan on visiting new york again soon and will definitely be staying here again.

The apartment was of a good size for 2 people.
The kitchen and bathroom had everything you needed. Great shower!
Fridge was stocked with milk and juice which was great.
Fantastic location, very central and close to subway.
Only negative points were noise- remember to bring your ear plugs!
Also there was a strong smell of cigarette smoke coming from either next door or the alley way next to the apartment.
Alexandra was very efficient and helpful.
All in all, a great place to stay! -

Northern New York stateJust what we were looking for!
Left on 08/16/2010 for a stay in August 2010
The apartment seems to have been a store/gallery in a previous incarnation as it does have a store front in the living room. However, as there are huge curtains that can be swept across the entire front of the apartment, this only added to the charm. The apartment was very clean, the television and two aC units worked well, there was a pc and printer, and the frig had a few eggs, milk and OJ to welcome us... As we spent most of our time out sight-seeing and shopping, the apartment really met our needs well. Location-wise, we were only one block from the F metro line which was tremendously convenient! We would definitely stay again!

I loved staying here!!! My girlfriend and I even extended our stay because it was so wonderful! The neighborhood is exciting: full of art and culture and food and daylife and nightlife. Also, we took a tour "native tours" given by one of the owners one day and another with another native of NYC. They showed us the treasures of NYC.
The apartment was perfect: in the heart of the neighborhood and not on a busy street so we had peace and quiet too!
I would recommend Norfolks.Home to all ! Young and old!Response from Alexandra Catalan - 07/26/2010
