      Beautiful hotel- great location!!

Left on 03/29/2013 for a stay in October 2012

I'm so happy I decided to stay at Sanctuary during my stay in NYC. Located right in the heart of the East Village- you're in prime location for easy access to many restaurants, bars, and activities in the city. You're also really close to the subway- which makes jumping around the city incredibly easy. Their yoga studio on the first floor of the hotel is top notch. They are also pretty involved in the community-- they participate in a program called Food for Life at Tompkins Square, where they actually invite their guests to go with them to help feed the homeless. The staff is very welcoming and will go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. If you are wanting a fun place off of the beaten path in Nyc- this is the move!!

      Superbe appartement idéalement situé

Left on 03/26/2013 for a stay in March 2013

      Living as a local

Left on 03/25/2013 for a stay in June 2012

My amazing adventures in New York City could not have been made possible without Sanctuary Guest Suites. I have stayed at Stanton Street and 73rd apartments and had wonderful experiences at both locations. In fact when anyone mentions New York I think of the east village and SGS. The friendly staff at SGS has made my stays without a doubt the best experience possible. Zach made me an entire itinerary with recommended events and spots to see on my first day as I wasn't sure where to start. They help you at the door when you arrive and are readily available if you have any additional questions during your visit. While staying in Stanton I attended a Yoga class in their own ground floor studio and a food for life program that is partnered with SGS!
Location: The east village in my opinion is one of the best attributes of the city. You will not find any chain restaurants but instead unique settings to eat with endless options. At night you can enjoy nearby live music halls or hide away in your own quite apartment. The subway access is great and you can be anywhere in the city in minutes.
Apartment: The apartment is clean and has a great layout which makes you feel comfortable and right at home. It's rare to travel and feel like a local. I love the hustle and bustle of the city and when I return to the SGS apartment I feel as if I'm returning home as a local New Yorker. I would never go back to a hotel in NY after experiencing SGS.
I highly recommend SGS to anyone trying to experience Manhattan.
      Sincerely,
      Govi allin

Although we had to climb a couple stairs to get to our room, the suite was set up to make you feel at home. Full of amenities, including a kitchen, made you think you were in your own apartment. The suite was clean and beds were very comfortable...but best of all was the East Village location with numerous restaurants and bars to keep you entertained!

From looking at the suites on-line we were a little worried that the pictures didn't match the reality, far from it.

The room we rented had heaps of spare for 3 girls with huge suitcases, full size fridge to keep cupcakes in and lasting hot water.

Location is great - Subway stop only 2 mins away and coffee is close by. Kat's Deli is only 2 blocks away. Make sure you go to Russ & Daughters for the bagels - yum !!!

perfect sanctuary for a stay in Manhattan

Left on 06/22/2012 for a stay in May 2012

I had the fortune of staying in one of the suites for four nights while visiting Manhattan. The space was perfect - it had a spacious, peaceful feel, with everything I needed, a true retreat to come back to after a hectic day. The place was beautiful and felt truly comfortable to me - much like my own apartment. As someone who generally doesn't like hotels, especially the over-priced ones in Manhattan, I was at home in the building, as it felt like my own apartment. This is definitely the place for an independent traveler who prefers to support small communities rather than large corporations. I was excited to bring friends over to see the place, and when a friend spent the night one night he commented that it was better than his pricey hotel room. The staff was very kind and generous, and I appreciated that they run a food kitchen in the local park, which made me more happy to support the establishment. The location is to die for - prime east village location, short walks to my other favorite lower Manhattan neighborhoods. This is where I will stay from now on whenever I visit NYC! My only hope is that it will not become too popular and that there will be a room available! ent. My 13-year old daughter and I stayed here over Easter 2012. While it isn't quite as plush as it looks on the website it was spotlessly clean and very comfortable, and had a really lovely atmosphere. The street was pretty quiet at night except for Saturday, and the position is great, very close to a subway stop and within easy reach of uptown and downtown. Mario and the team were delightful and really worked hard to make sure we had an enjoyable stay. We'd certainly go back.

Great rental because of three factors: price, apartment, locatio

Left on 03/05/2012 for a stay in September 2011

We visited NYC for two weeks in September, two couples, age range 30-40 years old and stayed in the Sanctuary apartments during this time.

For those who want the bottom line: we would heartily recommend staying here to anyone looking to stay in NYC as a local. It's clean, it has everything you might need (wifi, ironing board with iron, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, etc.),it's very well located and close to subway station.

For those who don't mind reading a bit more, here is the detailed review:

We found the place on the CraigsList and believe it or not, it was one of the rare rental ads which was not a scam! They really exist, they're honest and they require a small deposit up-front for reserving the place for you (it was around $ 200 for 4 of us, for the 2 week rental). Also the conversation with them both by phone, SMS and email was flawless - they responded quickly and with all the information that we asked for.

As for the apartment - it has everything that you might need in an apartment: a dishwasher, a fridge, a coffee machine with free capsules of tea and various coffee, a microwave, two air conditioners, etc. Also there are (coin operated) cloth washing and cloth drying machine in the ground floor of the building.

Union Square and Little Italy are 15 min away by foot. Neighborhood is very colorful and vibrant, the location is close to a the subway and bus stops. One couldn't that the neighborhood is quiet, but it's Manhattan! And it's nice and safe.

The only thing that we didn't like is the breakfast, which is quite basic. On the other hand, for the price paid breakfast can be considered only as the bonus and extra effort on the management side, so we didn't consider it to be a real minus.

We (5 adults between 25 and 30) stayed in the Hamsa suite for a week! The service we great, the location fantastic, the apartment clean beautiful and well kept, and the price simply unbeatable (25$ per night per person with a complimentary breakfast!)

The apartment is situated in a lovely part of New York and is about 2 blocks away from the subway, and close to most of the main attractions New York has to offer!

All the staff were friendly and helpful!

We were all very satisfied of our stay and if we come back to New York we will definitely come back to sanctuary guest suites!

      A Great Place to Stay!

Left on 02/24/2012 for a stay in February 2012

We really enjoyed the relaxed and friendly welcome. The atmosphere of this place is very accepting and nurturing. The accomodation is sound and comfortable. It is lovely and warm - maybe too warm! But the windows open all round. The street is an interesting one - with a diversity of people. There's a great cafe on the corner (The Bean), and there's a huge thrift shop at the other corner too! It's also within easy reach of the subway (under 5 mins) - as well as 15 minutes walk across to the West Village.

I would have given it 5 stars other than the outworn-ness of some of the utilities. For us, however, this is not an issue at all. We will be back!

      Thanks,
      Steve

      Sad to depart!

A Full apartment, A Great Location, & An awesome Price

Left on 11/29/2011 for a stay in October 2011

My travel partner and I are on a year-long road trip across the us. So as you can imagine we've stayed in all kinds of places and spaces. Sanctuary Guest Suites (Sgss) is one place we can't stop talking about.

While we were in NYC for a week we stayed at Sgss for about a week and it became our home away from home. For an extremely affordable rate (especially by NYC standards) we had a full bath, a kitchenette area - complete with dish- and silverware - a very comfortable living room area with a TV and fold out futon, a bedroom with a large bed, free wifi, and a washer and dryer. Good luck finding "real" apartments in NYC that are this nice.

Aside from the amenities the location is absolutely wonderful. We were within walking distance to a number of vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants (on a vegan food focused road trip, this is a must :), just a few blocks away from great night life, a few blocks from a Whole Foods, a late-night snack food/beverage store, and teeny juice stand (my favorite!) - where we got our morning juices each day. It was absolutely perfect.

The best part of our stay was being given the opportunity to help Sgss with their weekly Food For Life support at Tompkins Square Park. Every Monday and Wednesday they go to the park and hand out food to those in need. The fact that they invite Sgss guests to join them is simply wonderful. In many cases it's a life changing experience and we felt honored to be a part of it.

I do hope you'll consider Sgss during your next (or first) trip to NYC. It's worth it in so many ways.

We have stayed three years in a row at the sanctuary and have the the apartments, clean, well run and most convenient being a few blocks from the subway and one block from the bus. The East Village/lower east side is a happening place and we could not go back to an ordinary room after the space and freedom of a full apartment. The sanctuary is not an ordinary rental, rather the owners create an atmosphere of serenity and peace in the midst of New York. This is a remarkable achievement.

great value for money in an ideal new york location

Left on 10/29/2011 for a stay in March 2011

We stayed at sanctuary guest suites last march and had a fantastic time - we were in New York for a week and wanted the opportunity to get a real taster of living in the city without the formalities and blandness of staying in a hotel. We stayed in one of the penthouses at sanctuary and it surpassed all our expectations - with a private roof terrace with views over the city to the empire state building, and all the amenities that we needed it proved the perfect base to explore the city. We loved the location itself, as we had easy access to all the amazing coffee shops and vintage clothes shops of East Village while also being able to get to all the tourist sites of New York in very little time. We couldn't have asked for more from our accommodation, especially for the price, and we are already planning a trip back to sanctuary for next summer! I would highly recommend to anyone staying for more than a few nights in the city that would like to get more of a taster of the real New York.

Even with a 7 month baby we easily walked to China Town, Little Italy, Soho, East Village and alphabet City. No matter how long your stay, there are far too many choices of where to eat to try them all.

We enjoyed relaxing so much when in our apartment that we didn't even use the cable or wi-fi. Do yourself a favour, forget about hotels. 10 out of 10.

East Village Charmer - 73 East 3rd St.

Left on 10/19/2011 for a stay in October 2011

We enjoyed the location of this special East Village get-away apartment. It is situated on a quiet street yet close to buses, taxis, and the subway. You can also find lots of interesting restaurants a short walk from the Sanctuary. Our room looked similar to the one advertised (actually a little more attractive). We had a nice kitchen area although we hardly used it. The bathroom was small but clean and quite satisfactory. We didn't have a TV but that was a welcome relief. We enjoyed the downstairs breakfast room where we met travellers from all parts of the world. The breakfast was simple but nourishing. No elevator (we were on the 5th floor) would definitely deter some people but it meant a good cardio workout and it was great for the legs! We loved the roof garden and deck with the view of the city, particularly in the early morning and with the night lights.
Overall the place is clean, comfortable, with simple amenities, away from the tourist rush and noise, and a good price by New York standards. The staff were friendly and helpful.
The Sanctuary definitely enhanced our New York experience.

One of the best, most affordable Inns in NYC. Without a doubt!

I had no idea how awesome our stay at SGS was going to be. For starters the size of the room was incredible for the cost. The rooms range from $100-$300 a night but these rooms are friggin' huge for that price. There were only two of us but our room had 2 queen sized beds, and a full futon. We could have easily fit 6 people in this space... that would've been only $50 per person, per night. In NYC?! Awesome!

Not only is there plenty of room but you get a full kitchenette and a very clean bathroom. I don't know but these surely beats any hostel or cheap hotel I've stayed in, in NYC.

It truly felt like a home away from home; like I was just at my NYC apartment for the night. It was perfect.

The location is awesome too. With a Whole Foods around the block, a fresh press juice bar on the corner, and a 15 minute walk to SoHo, it was perfect for us!

Regarding the comfort -- as I mentioned, the location was perfect and it felt safe. There were no sketchy people hanging around and we felt completely comfortable walking around, near the hotel at night. Bonus!

Let's see -- what else -- the bed was very comfy, clean sheets, clean bathroom, a welcoming gift bag (with chocolates!), and kitchenware (post, plates, utensils). Oh and if you're not feeling like making breakfast, they serve a breakfast in the main lobby every morning.

All in all this was a great experience and I most definitely plan to go back the next time I'm in NYC!

The staff was so friendly, and helpful, and went way out of their way to help us enjoy our stay. The location was perfectly situated in the east village very close to the subway, bus and shopping and 100s of restaurants. The rooftop terrace is magical at night, the views are awesome. Thank you to all the staff at Sanctuary Suites.

This is my favorite place to stay in NYC. The Sanctuary Guest Suites are located in the Lower East Side filled with great restaurants and an array of small bars and intimate music venues. Besides the immaculately clean spacious apartment, the building also offers a beautiful rooftop with views of the Manhattan skyline and a breakfast spread offered daily in the office lounge. The staff at SGS are accommodating and friendly and I look forward to seeing my new "friends" each time I visit my home away from home. As a Long Islander I look forward to my weekend trips in the city and will most definitely return to Sanctuary Guest Suites. I highly recommend this property to anyone interested in a weekend getaway or an extended stay.

If your looking for a place to stay in NY look no further this place is amazing! The view alone from the rooftop terrace added a bunch of good memories to my trip. This was my second(and not last) time staying at the Sanctuary Guesthouse, I love staying there because the rooms are always clean, well decorated, and comfy. The staff are also very helpful and incredible nice. It's always a comfort to not just have a room to stay in, but an apartment, so that when I come back at the end of the day I feel like I'm coming home and not just to some hotel. I cannot say good enough things about this place, I rate it high not only in comfort, but atmosphere, location, reasonable pricing, and service.

This is a great place to stay with kids. It's convenient to everything downtown, and right by the subway. The apartment was clean and comfortable. Don't expect good service - it's pretty much leave and be left alone. But there is an office downstairs if you need something.

Be prepared for the four floor walkup.

Good Location, nice rooms, not a great experience

Left on 01/28/2011 for a stay in January 2011

My wife and I stayed in one of the guest suites which was on the 3rd fl - no elevator. My 1st impression was panic as no one answered the buzzer, no signage and only got in because a resident in the building let us in. The breakfast area is nice enough but don't expect any spread of any kind...mostly just coffee which you have a coffee maker in your own room. The room was way too hot so we had to constantly turn on/off the steam radiators. They seem to randomly ask people for $20 key deposit and then upon check-out had no one to refund so my wife and I had to go out to breakfast and come back.
Other than location, cost of room...no reason to stay here

The queen was in a 2nd level (a space 3 ft tall, no exagerations, over living area) & the singles in a separate room.My husband & I slept in the queen bed. We could not even sit in the bed, we had to crawl in the bed, obviously there was no space to get dressed. There was no space to put our cloths, we kept them in our luggage opened in the living area.We had to keep curtains closed bec street level

We can't say enough about Sanctuary Suites. We found them online by chance when looking for an affordable way to stay in New York. The staff provided a wonderfully tranquil studio suite, attended to our occasional needs, and even babysat our daughter for us (introducing us to Yo Gabba Gabba in the meantime). All in all, it was an unambiguously positive experience and we would recommend it without hesitation.

I have enjoyed my stay at the sanctuary guest hotel so much that when I'll visit again NYC (I hope soon ;-)) no doubt I will make the same choice. The place makes you feel like a newyorker in some respect. For me it was like being part of the neighborhood. A few things require being open to. Breakfast is not served: the guests have to help theirselves (which I prefer) and walking stairs up to six stores (if I recall it right) if you go for the penthouse. The hosts are friendly and supportive.

Sanctuary guest suites was great, i was staying in NY for 3 weeks for work and the thought of staying a hotel for that length of time is enough to sully any-ones trip to the fantastic NY city. I stayed in the penthouse suite which was very nicely decorated and had great natural light (although up 5 flights of stairs). The apartment is fully decked out, wifi, tv, dvd, washer dryer, dishwasher and all very modern. The location is excellent for those wanting a true East Village experience. A note to anyone actually wanting to cook in the kitchen, it is great for simple meals but don't expect to be able to cook a 3 course dinner.
