Napa, CaliforniaA good, reputable manager w/ several other rentals in the city
Left on 08/02/2012 for a stay in July 2012
I first wanted to rent this property, but the manager, John at ManhattanBnB said it was unavailable. Instead, he redirected me to his website where there were at least a dozen other rentals available to checkout. I noticed that only 3 of his other rentals were offered on Trip advisor and Vrbo. I wanted something in the East Village because I was traveling with my 22 year old son. And the East village is where it's happening (actually it's nothing like it used to be back in the 70's and 80's--which is a good thing--when it had a huge art and music scene. It looked highly gentrified, just like much of the rest of the east side did. But it was still a fun place to live for a few days).
Long story short: I chose one of their Saint Marks places, and paid through Google (one straight charge--no deposit, no cleaning fee). Received a few emails from them saying I should call so and so on arrival, please provide more info on who's coming, etc. Two days before arrival I received an email from John explaining they had to switch us to another apartment because of hot water being turned off due to work being done in the building. He was going to put us in an "upgrade" apartment a few block away on E.12th St. There would be no increase in cost, and if I wanted, I could cancel the whole thing and get a full refund (which I almost did). I called him and he answered back explaining he was sorry, it was just one of those things. Still, I started feeling paranoid, having just read something on Trip adviser about the illegality of NYC rentals and the possibility of getting ripped off.
(Short story long) Nothing of the sort happened. The place indeed was an upgrade, and we liked the location better. The guy who gives you the key when you show up was very helpful, and even allowed us a late check out time. Sure the place was small, but it was clean. You do have a small kitchenette to help save $$ on breakfast, lunch, snacks, etc. Cable TV and free wireless. So, very pleased with the management company even though the original apartment fell through. I would use them again. -

We stayed at one of John's other apartments also in East Village and had a terrific stay. The apartment was exactly as pictured--no frills, but clean and with everything you need. When we had questions, about our arrival, about the wifi and at checkout, our texts were answered very promptly. We'll be back!

A nice apartment in a pleasant environment. In the vicinity of subway and the fantastic Union Square. The apartment is pleasantly furnished and is a wonderful place to relax after a busy day in the city to come home.

Sydney, AustraliaPerfect spot in the East Village
Left on 07/13/2012 for a stay in June 2012
I loved staying in the East Village in St Marks Place. So many options for food and drink down 3rd and 2nd avenues. St marks place is still pretty crazy but once you climb the stairs to the apt you are in a haven of tranquility. So much better value for money than any hotel of a solar price in manhattan. Clay was there to meet me and very instructive and helpful.
I guess the only drawback would be if you had issues with climbing 3 flights of stairs. I didn't and had a great time. Thanks guys! -

Flint, MI#8 Saint Marks East Village - great deal
Left on 07/11/2012 for a stay in June 2012
We actually stayed at #8 St. Marks a little further from subway, still was an awesome location right in the heart of East Village. Apt had 2 beds in the bedroom which wss nice for my daughter and I. We thought we would cook, but ended up eating just eating breakfast in, since the food and restaurants were too nice to pass up. The place was comfortable and convenient. It was nice to not be in a hotel room at much higher prices and it was even better experience to live for a week in NYC like you live there.
The apartment itself was clean, I felt safe in the neighborhood. The furnishings are adequate - Ikea bargain, but it works. The owners were great to work with, respond quickly to questions prior to arrival and provide information about the area upon arrival. They actually met us when we arrived to show us the apartment and give us the keys. -

This is a one bedroom apartment in the East Village. The price is superior to other vacation rentals and definitely blows a hotel out of the water, especially for an extended stay. The kitchen is well stocked should you decide to cook, but with so many cheap and amazing restaurants around, you'll probably decide against it. The view isn't anything to speak of, but the property is only 1.5 blocks from the closest subway to get you anywhere in Manhattan lickety-split; great central location. Don't be put off by the surrounding storefronts: head shops and tattoo parlors abound. The sofa in the "living room" folds down to a futon, we very comfortably stayed here with 3 people. We texted the owner when we arrived at Penn station and he was waiting at the apt when we got there! Great service and a great place. Note that the unit is on the 3rd floor with no elevator access.
