Birmingham, United KingdomCouldn't Have Wished for Better! Amazing!
Left on 07/31/2012 for a stay in July 2012
Having never been to New York before my friend and I were unsure as to where to stay; most people would recommend mid/down-town, however due to budget restraints we opted for this charming apartment in Harlem. After our stay - we have both said categorically that we couldn't have imagined staying anywhere else! Like most people we had heard mixed reviews of Harlem and although there were gatherings of people on the streets, we found them all to be relaxed, friendly, warm and inviting. Even as two females we didn't feel unsafe at any point walking around the local area or talking with the locals. The tube station was also only a 5 minute walk away, which connected us straight down town to the hustle of mid-town Manhattan in 5 minutes.
The owner (Julie) was fantastic prior to our arrival and answer my numerous questions about the local area, how to get around etc. I have no doubt that she would have answered any question I could have thrown at her! Julie happened to be out of town on our arrival, however to ensure we were well looked after she made alternate arrangements for a family member to meet us who also was incredibly friendly, helpful and informative about the local area. Julie did however make an extra effort to ensure we were introduced during our stay and was very friendly and approchable, as was the maintenance man for the building.
The apartment was as described; modern inside with a beautifuly clean and well-maintained mini courtyard on the outside. There were two of us (friends) staying in the same apartment so one of us took the bed and one on the sofa bed - both beds were extremely comfortable made with clean bedding. Kitchen and bathroom were well-equipped and spotlessly clean. The free Wi-Fi was definitely an added bonus which we both found useful!
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed staying in this apartment and when we return to New York later this year, we will most certainly be returning here. -

This place really is perfect. I was a first time traveller to the states (NY included) and it was such a painless, and easy process.
Julie is an absolute delight, so helpful, and ready to answer any questions very promptly. The apartment is such a good base for do anything really. Felt like a local, with all the freedom we were provided.
All the furnishings are first class. Also very clean. The bathroom is modern, so too the kitchen. Both beds where comfortable. Loved all the furnishings. An extra note for those needing internet access while away, this place has excellent wi-fi.
As for location, it was again excellent. 116th station is only a couple blocks away going up town and downtown. Only about 10 blocks from North Central Park. We took the subway up to the bronx for a yankees game and got there in 20 mins. Downtown to time square in about the same time. To brooklyn for a concert in about 40. It was excellent.
Also great soulfood place 'Amy Ruth's' down a couple blocks and finally, for those looking for food on the way back from big/late nights, theres a store that sales awesome greasy take away near the station as well. Laundromat and groceries are also very close by.
Felt very safe, and had such a great time.
For young travellers, it's a great base to get to know the city for the first time.
Such an electric experience! Can't wait to come back :) -

I travel a great deal and routinely stay in hotels. For my vacation, I was looking for a cost effective alternative for a week in New York. I found it in this lovely Harlem studio. This was my first time ever using a vacation rental and must admit I was a little leary because there are so many scams and a lack of truth in advertising. Not so with this place. Julie was always quick in responding to my questions and concerns during the booking process. The studio is perfectly situated (quick 15 minute ride) from amtak station downtown . I traveled solo and felt safe walking the neighborhood, even at night after a evening show at the famed appollo Theater. Lots of great restaurants! I particularly enjoyed Settepani, Uptown Vegan Bar, and Cafe Lattee on several occasions. After my week, I really felt like a local - can't wait for my next trip!

186361Felt unsafe in Harlem
Left on 06/17/2012 for a stay in June 2012
Having read the previous reviews, we decided to stay here. The booking process was good and Julie greeted us on our arrival. She explained where the shops and subway was and showed us where her handy man lived in case we needed anything fixing. Julie was most helpful answering any queries we had prior to our arrival including telling us the cost of a taxi ($45 flat fee + toll + tip from JFK) and how long it would take us to get there, etc.
As we had arrived by taxi, our first impression of the area was OK. However, when exploring the area and visiting the supermarket, we became uneasy but put this to the back of our minds. We asked our tour guide about the safety of Harlem and he explained that there are good parts and bad parts.
The apartment was clean with the exception of the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. The bathroom was very modern and clean with lovely fluffy white towels. The bed could only be accessed from the bottom as one side was against the wall and the other side had a shelving unit right up against it. We were able to crawl up the bed from the bottom but this may be an issue for someone with restricted mobility although they could make up the sofa bed. The kithen was sparcely equiped with 4 knives, 4 forks, etc. and the tiny wooden chopping board was broken.
One evening, at about 6.30pm, when returning from a busy day sightseeing, we were approached by a young man just outside the apartment who began spinning us a story that he was due to be deployed to afganistan and hadn't eaten for days and asked us for money. As we had already given a beggar at the supermarket the last of our cash, we told him that we could not give him anything. He then became very abusive and we felt threatened especially as he knew where we were staying. On our last night, the couple in the apartment above or below argued loudly all night until she left to go to work.
As I'm not from the us, I do not know which areas of Harlem are safe or not but I definately did not feel safe here.Response from Julie K. - 06/24/2012
Owner
We feel very sorry that our guests felt this way: this is our only "3 stars" review and the only guests out of hundreds of our visitors, who felt unsafe in Harlem.
please read more reviews about the Studio and the surrounding area here:
http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/146726
I feel that I also need to leave a couple of notes re the details of the review:
first, the panhandlers are very common in any urban area, New York is not an exception, and one can be approached on Times Square, Greenwich Village or anywhere in the world - it is not a Harlem-specific feature.
As for the "dirty dishes" - this is an especially hurtful detail, as we go out of our way to clean and wash absolutely everything after each and every guest - from mattress covers to shower curtains.
This particular unfortunate incident happened when previous guests who were supposed to leave the very same day, at normal 11 am check-out time, asked to keep the luggage in the apartment till their flight in the afternoon. When they returned to collect the luggage - not only they took the luggage but they decided to eat in the completely cleaned Studio and stuck the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. I couldn't see this coming and I didn't have enough time to check everything before the arrival of the next guests the very same afternoon, but this was clear oversight on my end and I apologize for this. -

The studio was presented cleanly and as shown and is situated close to subway, laundry, restaurant and local grocery. The owner was very attentive in all stages of the process and provided helpful information throughout including assistance when one guest fell ill. Well priced and a great alternative to a hotel. I would definitely stay again.

187244Authentic, quiet, historic, convenient, peaceful: a true vacatio
Left on 12/30/2011 for a stay in December 2011
We have been many times in New York city, most often in big hotels. This time we decided we would try something different, more authentic, historic, even romantic. Not an easy goal. Downtown was too busy, Queens too far. It had to be a close-by neighborhood. Either Brooklyn or Harlem. We finally picked up Harlem, and we don't regret it.
When we arrived there, we knew we made the right choice: old historic street, very quiet, very pretty building facade. The kind of street you would want to shoot a movie about new york city in the 1900's.
Old outside, very modern inside: kitchen looked all brand new to us, all modern amenities were as announced. More importantly, everything was very clean. One little critique (I have to mention it to remain credible ...) : the main bed mattress was not the most comfortable I slept in, but that was a very minor inconvenience.
The place is incredibly well located: while it's very quiet, it is 5 minutes from the subway, four stops from Time Square. So in 20 minutes, you go from the most peaceful neighborhood to the busiest place on earth!
Let talk a bit about safety. As tourists, we had a few cliche in mind about Harlem. Not enough to discourage us from trying though. Fortunately ... Because we felt totally safe in this place. Not a single problem. Nada. One night, 1pm, we took the wrong line to come back home, and had to walk 45 minutes from Columbia university. Again, We did not feel a bit of insecurity.
A word on the neighborhood. It is both convenient (many stores around) and worthwhile. There are several Jazz places close-by (we did not have time to spend an evening there, which will be a good reason to come back), restaurants, gospel churches, park, etc. We did walk a couple of time from there up to Central Park (15 minutes) and then through the park to downtown (1 hour). Very cool promenade.
I cannot conclude the review without talking about Julie, the property manager. She was just incredibly friendly and helpful all along, waiting for us on the porch when we arrive, providing good hints on the neighborhood, even reserving the taxi when we left.
We would certainly be looking forward to come back. No more hotels after that! -

Amazing flat, very clean, quiet place and where we had a very pleasant stay.
The clean up was done just before the check in.
It was perfect for a week spent in New York.
The flat is 5 minutes away from the closest metro station.
The area is very safe. We were pleasantly surprised about that.
Many facilities and food markets around. Therefore, we could buy what we needed for breakfast. We were at the flat mainly for sleeping. We spent the rest of the day away, walking through Manhattan.
We strongly recommend this place. We will probably stay there again next time we come over to NYC !
