    Additional Location Information

Newbiggin-on-Lune is set at the foot of the Howgills, which form a triangle of mountains between the communities of Ravenstonedale, Tebay, and Sedbergh. The Howgills make for peerless walking terrain. Wainwright considered them some of his favourites. They are still relatively undiscovered, and you can walk here for miles without seeing another soul. These hills are notable for their rounded summits and long ridges – and are frequently compared to elephants lying down. Newbiggin is by the northern edge of the Howgills, underneath the distinctive and graceful dome of Green Bell. The northern edge of the Howgills is notable for three great valleys and the ridges between them. These valleys are Weasdale, Bowderdale, and Langdale, and each of them has a hamlet named after it at its foot. Aside from these settlements, the valleys are lonely, with barely a tree, never mind a road or farmhouse. There are some tracks, occasional tumbledown sheepfolds, sheep, and fell ponies – and that’s about it for signs of the human touch on this land. If you want solitude (and Wainwright loved it), the Howgills are your place.

Perfect Blend of Historic Charm and Modern Comforts

Left on 05/01/2013 for a stay in April 2013

I am so glad we got the chance to stay in Kirkby Stephen at the Cranesbill Barn. I only wish we could have stayed longer!

Jeanette and alex were gracious hosts and made sure we had everything we needed during our stay. The house is beautiful inside and out, and very comfortable. It's a great home base for exploring the Lake District, surrounded with acres of beautiful countryside and ancient sites. I hope we'll get to come back for a longer visit and stay here again!

Very Comfortable stay, ideally situated for the Lakes and the Hi

Left on 04/30/2013 for a stay in October 2012

We had a very enjoyable week at Cranesbill, Newbiggin-on-Lune is ideally situated for exploring both the lakes and the hills and easy access to the M6 makes it travel to and from Cranesbill easy. The kids loved the "upside down" layout with the bedrooms on the lower floor which makes best use of the natural lights and views across the back garden to the Kids play area (where the kids enjoyed burning off some energy). The furnishings are a pleasingly eclectic mix of new and old with all the facilities needed for a family break. Possibly not suitable though for older guests due to the stairs in the building though.
