I stayed at Home From away in Newman's Cove for just over a week. The owners, Darla and Tracy Scott, invited me to join them and I am glad I did. It is a beautiful, comfortable, warm, roomy and fully equipped house. I liked the rich colours and decorations, much like my own place. I liked the different woodwork, much of it original, or new material patterned after original design. Darla has hung some of her own terrific pictures so you get a sense of why Newfoundland is so neat and she likes it so much. You experience the sea as you walk up the road to Susie's Café for a great meal and an entertaining time. Newman's Cove is a lovely little outport near several others all with their own character. I was astonished to realize how much the people, the society, the culture in Newfoundland was oriented around the sea. You see this perfectly in little places like Newman's Cove. You can also drive a short way to Bonavista where John Cabot landed in North america in 1497 and where you can see a full-sized replica of his ship, The Mathew. Home From away is great. I recommend it.
