Description from the owner

Situated in a quiet and peaceful location on the edge of the Forest of Dean and over looking the River Severn estuary, Hamstalls is one of two adjacent holiday cottages. It has recently been converted to a high standard and is run as “sustainably” as possible. It has under-floor heating from a ground source heat pump, a log burner, a small private garden, patio, barbeque, and parking for 2 cars. The cottage is on a single level, is suitable for wheel chairs and is graded Mobility level 1. Hamstalls has one double bedroom with ensuite bathroom with shower over & one double or twin bedroom (zip and link beds) with ensuite wet room. There...Read more

    Additional Location Information

The cottage is close to several footpaths including the Severn Way footpath which follows the river and is one of the longest footpaths in England. There is easy access to the river which can rise as much as 10 metres when the tide comes in and provides interesting conditions for surfers and is always an amazing sight. The ancient village of Awre with its 15th century pub and Norman church is in easy walking distance across the fields and boasts local farm butcher, a cider maker and a potter. From the cottage, the picturesque village of Newnham can be reached either by a 3 mile car journey or a very pretty walk along the river, while in the other direction, Blakeney gives access to a scenic rouet through the Forest.

Cosy cottages on banks of Severn with warm welcome.

Left on 03/20/2013 for a stay in February 2013

On a cold February weekend these wooden cottages were well heated by an underfloor system. We also had a god supply of dry wood for the log burning stoves, which added an additional level of cosiness. The location is in the precincts of the owners' old farmhouse and ther is another farm close by. Other than that they are entirely secluded, quiet and free of unnecessary outside lighting. The welcome pack mentioned in other review is indeed a splendid thing. Each cottage had a large loaf of home-made bread, bottles of local cider, locally made jam, butter and eggs. The owners were also welcoming and attentive.
My only negative comment would be that the price demanded on enquiry was significantly above the "from ÂŁ.." prices quoted in this and their own website. We paid ÂŁ378 or something within ÂŁ10 of that sum for the two cottages together at the end of a week that was half term in some parts of the country. That was for two couples, two young adult children and a baby.

      idyllic spot - brilliant hosts

Left on 10/29/2012 for a stay in August 2011

Stayed for 4 nights with my partner - greeted by a lovely selection of local food / cider
The river is visible from cottage, at the bottom of the owner's garden with access to the river walk - this is an ideal spot for the bore - although not the narrowest part of the river it shows off the multicurrents to their full and it's quite exciting to hear the rush of the bore in the evening - also not far to travel for more popular bore sighting locations.
Local walks are amazing - beautiful contryside. Cottage is comfortable, well equipped, there is a barbecue and private patio and an orchard out the front which the sheep frequent. Ian Cowan was very helpful / friendly - highly recommend this property and hope to be able to return soon

      Excellent Cottage

Left on 10/18/2012 for a stay in September 2012

Hoolet was the perfect place for a quiet getaway. We (young parents and 3 month old baby) especially enjoyed the beautiful views of the Severn and the proximity to the Forest of Dean. The cottage was environmentally friendly, comfortable and well equipped. Ian and Tricia were excellent hosts. Very highly recommended.

Exceeded our expectations, excellent find, very welcoming!

Left on 02/26/2012 for a stay in February 2012

This cottage exceeded our expectations, great location, reasonably priced and very modern.

We were treated to a surprise welcome pack, which made our stay extra special - which included local cider, eggs, bread and butter.

The owner kept us well informed from start to finish, from directions to local services available in the village!

We wanted a base to explore the forest of dean, including Symonds Yat, Go ape and the forest - we could not have been more pleased.

The river severn is a stroll the down the garden which is spectacular.

It felt warm, cosy and was well equipped. I will be sharing the great find with friends and family.

We hope to return one day!!
