Rochester, New YorkA lovely and private refuge in the woods
Left on 05/28/2013 for a stay in May 2013
We heard about The Hoblet from friends of ours who had recently stayed there and felt we had to experience it for ourselves.
It's a perfect little hidden rustic getaway, just minutes from the Falls and the other nearby attractions. The owner, Petra, is very caring and personable and the place is blessed by her loving devotion to the rescue animals she cares for: donkeys, goats, pot-bellied pigs and a mule. There are so many special touches throughout the place, it's hard to know where to start with a description! All of the animals are so sweet, but we bonded most with George the white goat, and Cuddles the mini-donkey who thinks he is a goat.
The living space is private, clean and well designed with little bridges and walkways and places to hang out with the animals. There is also a sauna for those cool spring days and nights. One night, Mush built a fire for us in the "Circle of Elements" and it was a delightful way to spend the evening. Another great place to relax is on the adjoining patio with a view of the woods.
We did so some sightseeing during the day in Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-lake, but couldn't wait to get back to The Hoblet to enjoy the best spot of all!
All in all, we had a wonderful time at the Hoblet and would recommend it highly to anyone looking to relax and be rejuvenated in a lovely woodland atmosphere.

We loved the location, on the Niagara peninsula, and Petra was wonderful about telling us the things of interest in the area in addition to the Falls. We were treated like part of the family, and very much enjoyed the ambiance of the Hoblet. The rescue animals were delightful.
There were so many personal touches to our experience, we wish we could have stayed longer. We feel we have new friends in Petra and Mush, and when we return you can be sure we will visit them again!! -

If you are looking for a unique experience and total relaxation while being only a short drive from all the activities that Niagara has to offer then this is the place! My spouse and I spent the most relaxing weekend simply doing nothing but enjoying the solitude and beautiful surroundings that the hoblet has to offer. The donkeys, goats and pigs were certainly the icing on the cake for me. It was so nice to have a cup of coffee on the swing and just watch them go about their routine (it was especially entertaining to watch Cuddles playing chase with the goats). Petra and Mush were absolutely lovely and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Although we were familiar with the area, Petra offered some fantastic suggestions on local places worth checking out and I'm glad we did. While they were very helpful and available if we needed them, they also ensured our privacy which was much appreciated (when you want to sit outside and enjoy coffee in the morning with a bed head and not have to worry about running for cover at any moment...thanks!) It was probably the most relaxing weekend we've had all year but if we had wanted to enjoy all the action it was only about 15 minutes away - location is perfect. The hoblet was clean, spacious and cozy. I loved all the rustic features outside yet the very modern conveniences inside...especially the infa-red sauna (this is a must try - dry heat which was far more relaxing and tolerable than the regular sauna experience). The fire pit looked awesome but all the fresh air made us sleepy so we didn't get a chance to enjoy this part...next time for sure! I can't think of anything that would have made this a better experience aside from simply being able to stay longer. One note: the fridge is not full size so don't bring too many items that require refrigeration. Highly recommend and will definitely be back! Thanks Petra and Mush, especially for my extra special opportunity to get hands on with the piggies :)

Our family of four had so much fun at the Hoblet. Who knew feeding goats and donkeys could, literally, entertain a four-year-old and a two-year-old for hours on end? Petra and Mush have created such a special little hideaway--it feels as though you might spy and elf or fairy at any moment in the surrounding woodland.
The cabin itself is simple, clean and comfy, with lots of personal touches. My son adored sleeping on the top bunk in the bedroom, while my husband and I were comfortable on the much larger bottom bunk. The sofas in the living room also convert into beds, but we enjoyed all camping out together in the bedroom. The sauna provided a nice way to unwind, as did the good selection of Dvds. The porch is so cozy and our kids loved the wooden swing. And the fire pit outside the cabin is really lovely--we had a fun dinner fireside (we used the BBQ) followed by roasted marshmallows.
Location-wise, you are in the middle of the woods, but so close to everything in the region. We went to the Falls, the Butterfly Conservatory, and toured Port Colborne. Petra offered plenty of insider tips on great places to visit. We wish we had had more time. However, we could have just stayed at the Hoblet as far as our kids were concerned! My kids really bonded with the animals--especially Cuddles, a donkey who thinks he is a person, or at least a dog (he would let out the most hilarious bray/bellow when we would finally start heading inside after giving him plenty of attention/food).
Thank you, Petra and Mush! We hope to sometime soon.

Left on 05/11/2013 for a stay in April 2013
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hoblet as we visited Niagara Falls for the first time. What a unique and serene refuge, within an easy 15-20 minute drive to the Falls, yet in its own quiet and rustic world. The accommodations were cozy and comfortable, with wonderful amenities like a dry sauna and covered patio for outdoor relaxing. The presence of so many donkeys, goats and other rescue animals created a loving atmosphere in which we too felt well cared for and welcomed by all. Petra can suggest all sorts of places to visit and tips on how to make the most of any stay. Highly recommended!

It was so pleasurable and relaxing to stay at the Hoblet. Thank you for making it what it is! By the way De-Heathly Bakery was a great place to visit as well for Gluten Free foods, what a great recommendation!

Left on 03/18/2013 for a stay in March 2013
I was looking for a place to get away for a few days with my family and stumbled upon this gem. It turned out to be exactly what we were looking for and more!
Petra and Mush are the ultimate hosts - something that is rarely found these days. They are very invested in the enjoyment and satisfaction of their guests - some of the nicest people you will meet.
The Hoblet itself is a lovely, bright place located on a beautiful, scenic property. With floor to ceiling windows and sky lights, you really feel a part of natural surroundings. A lovely fire greeted us as we entered and the lightly stocked kitchen was most welcome. To be able to have a shower and then hop in the infrared sauna felt revitalizing.
And the animals! What a joy it was to have them so close. My 9 year old daughter immediately fell in love with "Cuddles", the lovable donkey (who thinks he is a goat) and spent the majority of her time outside visiting with and talking to the animals. Even my 19 month old son seemed so excited to toddle around and be so close to the animals. All that fresh air...both kids slept so well.
Without a doubt, we will be back again - would love to see this place in the Fall. My daughter has proclaimed it "The best place ever!"
Petra and Mush, thanks for everything. Give the animals some pats from us - we miss them!

Left on 01/23/2013 for a stay in January 2013
I booked a stay at the Hoblet for a birthday getaway in mid-January. I am very glad I chose to stay here. Petra and Mush make every effort to ensure your stay is comfortable, positive and private.
The Hoblet was clean, comfortable and equipped with everything one might need (movie collection included). A major highlight for me was the grounds. Petra and Mush have done a great job of landscaping their property to create a peaceful escape nestled in the woods. The firepit was expertly prepared every night and stocked with more than enough kindling and logs to keep a fire going well into the night. The animals are friendly and fun to interact with. It is obvious how much Petra and Mush care about the creatures they have rescued, and it is interesting to hear the individual story of each animal. It is a nice touch to a peaceful, cozy escape from the city. I would definitely return. -

Arriving at The Hoblet was exactly what we needed. We loved the feeling of having our own little space nestled in the woods. A little bridge and walkway with animals to greet us for our stay and early rise. Having an Infrared Sauna in the comfort of our own room was a special treat to say the least. The circle of stones surrounding a fire pit was an excellent way to wind down our night. This is a very beautiful place to relax, unwind, detox and be in nature. I would recommend a stay at The Hoblet to anyone interested in doing just that. Glad we found it and will be staying here again the next time we are in Niagara.

You have to stay here if you're going to Niagara Falls. It's a woodsy sanctuary owned and tended by two wonderful folks who care about people and the essence of life. The Hoblet is fully equipped,(although it doesn't have a regular oven), spacious and comfortable. The glass doors open to a view of the woods and Cuddles, the rescue donkey and two goats. Is in the country but close enough to enjoy th local attractions, Niagara Falls, wineries, The Prince of Wales hotel, Niagara on the Lake, Port Colborne, Te Welland Canal area, the St. John's Conservation District, and so on. A perfect place for a perfect, quiet, restful vacation. Go there.

Located off the beaten path the stay was more than relaxing. Although its secluded niagara falls is only 15 minutes away. All around the stay was more than I could ask for and I would love to stay there again.

Petra greeted us with open arms when we arrived at The Hoblet. The fireplace was lit as we entered, fresh flowers on the table, a birthday card (it was my birthday), as well as as much advice and information we needed to tour Niagara Falls. The mules, donkeys, goats and pot bellies were very friendly too :) The inside of the cottage is perfectly arranged, quite cozy and a home away from home. Petra is such a lovely, friendly host. We highly recommend this quaint cottage to any visitors of Niagara Falls. Location is in the country but only a few minutes drive to the city. I loved taking my morning coffee outside the say good morning to the pets. The Hoblet is so much better than staying in a stuffy hotel room in the city. Petra, thank you once again for your hospitality and friendliness.

The Hoblet has everything you need to be comfortable and next time we'll make sure we have more time to enjoy our days there. We have three kids (9, 12, 15) and this was their favorite spot we have ever stayed. It is about 15 minutes from the sights, but you feel like you are in a completely remote country setting. The hoblet itself is adorable and unique, complete with grass growing on the roof. The inside is clean and has all the comforts of home. A perfect combination. And the animals were a huge hit with my kids. The 2 pigs were adorable, and feeding them apple slices every day was one of the highlights of the trip for my kids. And the donkeys, mule, and three dogs were great too! Mush and Petra could not have been nicer. They are such genuine, kind, helpful people. It was such a pleasure to get to know them. The fire waiting for us one night in the fire pit was great too. I can't say enough nice things about both the hoblet and its wonderful owners. Can't wait to return!!

My wife and I stayed at the Hoblet while on a vacation and our two days there were a highlight of our trip. Petra, Mush and "the gang" made it extra special - from the friendly greeting on our arrival, unlimited amount of information on things to see and do, the fire going in the fire pit on return from a long day of being tourists to our warm good-byes. The property is unique, rustic on the outside (including the greenery growing on the roof!) and luxury on the interior (how about a sauna to relax after a long day?). Where else can you sit by a nice fire while having a chat with a couple pot belly pigs?? The location is out in the country - but only ten minutes from the falls and all the tourist activities. Private and quiet. I went for a run and only saw about three cars and they all waved as though I were a long-time neighbor. On my return, Petra's rescue donkeys and mules were at the fence waiting for me (and maybe hoping for an apple treat.) We're so glad we found the Hoblet and it would be our first choice on a return visit. If there was a disapointment it was that we didn't stay longer Thanks again to Petra, Mush and the gang for a wonderful experience!

My husband and I stayed here last weekend (September 7-9) and it was absolutely perfect! So serene and relaxing, exactly what we needed! The kitchen was well stocked, the outdoor area was private and beautiful, the little piggies were so cute and funny (Sheldon and Sheck), the donkeys were fun to feed and pet, and the hosts are great"! Petra has such a passion for nature and animals and it shines through in every detail of this little tucked away gem. It was close enough to everything to be able to get out and do things, but it is so beautiful you really just want to spend most of your time here.
We will be back to take in the fire at the circle of elements and say hello to Petra, Mush, and the whole gang of critters!
We loved it and we cannot say enough good things about it. Anyone who would want to stay in a hotel in Niagara Falls over this place is crazy.
Thanks Petra and Mush!

Nestled in a country setting the Hoblet is just a few miles from the attractions of Niagara Falls. The Hoblet is spotless with a wonderful patio looking out into the woods. It was a pleasure to get to know Petra, the gracious and accommodating host of the Hoblet. This is a great place to stay for the animal lover. Petra rescues abandoned and abused animals. She has dogs, pigs, and donkeys. I enjoyed visiting the animals, they're fun and can be quite entertaining. The pigs will even roll over for a belly rub. They have bikes available for relaxing rides on the scenic country roads. We rode for an hour and only saw a handful of cars. I left a shirt that I really like at the Hoblet. Petra was kind enough to email me about this and offer to send it to me. I offered to pay her but she wouldn't hear of it. This was service above and beyond. I really appreciated the whole experience. The only downside was we couldn't stay longer. Can't wait to come back for another visit!

You will not find a place as nice as this in Niagara Falls Canada. Petra and Mush thought of everything...right down to the wine glasses and the soap to wash them. It was a joy feeding their animals. The fire pit was awsome. My favorite part of my trip was sitting on the patio in the morning before the family was awake...drinking my coffee and watching the humming birds feed. Oh and having power their dogcome lick my hand...his way of saying good morning and welcome to my home.

Petra and Mush are wonderful hosts, along with the four legged friends. Lots of well-kept, clean, friendly animals to change-up your day of sightseeing or just lazing around the property. The Hoblet was just fine for 4 college friends from the 70's and we especially loved the roaring fire in the big pit every night.

The Hoblet is a magical place to stay. The cabin is comfortable and well-outfitted, the surroundings are beautiful and the location superb. Best of all, Petra and Mush are friendly and wonderful hosts, as are the four-legged gang who make the Hoblet their home. We spent 3 full-moon nights marvelling at the white donkeys walking through the silvery light as we sat round the fire enjoying the wine we'd purchased during our drive through the Niagara vineyards. Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls are both easy drives away, with all the sights they hold, but lazy mornings and magical evenings at the Hoblet were highlights of each day. Thank you Petra and Mush for providing such a wonderful sanctuary for the animals and for sharing it with us. We hope to come back again soon!

Petra, Mush and the whole beautiful and friendly gang went above and beyond as hosts on our four night stay at the Hoblet! You get the best of both worlds really because you are so close to the falls, a nice country drive (Petra will give you the maps for everything you need) And you get all the modern, clean comforts in your cottage including an infra-red sauna! But in nature, which you really appreciate coming back to after spending a couple of hours doing the touristy things. It was the perfect accommodation to unwind, night we liked to sit around the fire pit which is right next to the pigs which are too cute!
I can't recommend the Hoblet enough, we are already booked to come back! It's so nice to see how happy, comfortable and friendly the rescue animals are with the guests and that's due to Petra and Mush's caring natures, I miss the Hoblet already. -

We always strive to find a unique place for our family. When I came across The Hoblet, I was intrigued. When I noticed that it was a donkey rescue, the first misconception that I had was that aren't donkeys stubborn, unruly, and probably smelly? What we found was just the opposite. These wonderful animals are gentle and loving. This is a very peaceful and smell-free place.
The Hoblet itself is a lovely cottage. It contains all necessities as well as many considerations that have been placed so as to make your stay more comfortable. The owners are on the property, but residents in The Hoblet have total privacy as the cottage is set off to the side with the door facing outward towards the beautiful landscaping and pond. Your host and hostess do everything to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. To boot, they are also splendid and kind-hearted people providing all the details about the surrounding communities.
In addition to the donkeys, there is a set of pigs, and three gentle dogs. For adults, this property provides one with the chance to sit back and take a rest. If you have children, The Hoblet provides the opportunity for your kids to get away from the distractions of life. Sometimes these distractions become routine. It's a chance to bring a family back to the basics of appreciating nature and the beauty around them.
Within a 15-minute drive is Niagara Falls and all that has to offer. We appreciated the fact that we were staying away from this bustling tourist attraction. We visited Niagara Falls three times as well as did downtown Toronto, a safari, various ports within the area, and upstate New York (20 minutes away).
My husband and I and our three kids (aged 15, 12, and 10) had an absolutely splendid time on this trip. Memories have been formed that will last a lifetime. We hope to visit The Hoblet again.

We just returned from our 5 night stay at the Hoblet. It was such a lovely peaceful place that we were all sorry to be leaving. The children had such a fun time watching the frogs, turtles and fish in the pond and feeding the donkeys and the pigs, that they didn't want to go home. The location was perfect for enjoying all the local attractions, and we did many!
The owners Petra and Mush were the nicest people you could ever wish to meet, they welcomed us like friends and were there to offer advise on places to visit and make sure our stay was perfect.
The beds at the Hoblet were comfortable with crisp clean linens, plenty of towels and ample hot water for the whole family to take a shower. The kitchen was well stocked and the living room was nicely furnished. I slept on an inflatable bed in the living room which turned out to be very comfy. It was a super safe location that we slept with all the doors and windows open and enjoyed the sounds of the forest and the cool breeze that swept through. I don't think we've all slept that well in years.
Thank you Petra and Mush for a truly memorable vacation, we would love to return -

Left on 06/16/2012 for a stay in June 2012
The thing about vacations is that you look forward to getting away and then looking forward to going home because home is the comfort zone some say. But " The Hoblet" challenges that notion based purely on the fact that I wasn't looking forward to going home in this case... I was home. A cozy little cabin style home with all the amenities including a relaxing sauna after a full day of the touristy stuff. Petra and Mush were so accommodating that I had no problem starting up a conversation as if I had known them for years and had just seen them yesterday. Great people who will bend over backwards to make sure that nothing is overlooked. And if by chance it is, then the situation is remedied immediately. A fantastic retreat giving you the feeling that the posh, sterile high rise hotels rooms are a bit over-rated sometimes. We're all looking for a little serenity in our lives. Well... this place is a pretty good start.
P.S. Enjoy the porsche Mush. Ask him about that if you visit. But it's a bit of a sore spot just to let you know. -

The Hoblet was a great getaway! Me and my bf stayed for two nights and had such a relaxing time. We had a great Meet and Greet with the animals and absolutely loved them!! Powder and the other dogs are fun to be around and always Gide us around the property. Petra and her husband were great showing us around and helping us set a fire at night. Great hospitably! The Hoblet has great features the sauna was one of the ones we enjoyed the most. The bed was comfy and the living room was big. Petra and Mush were kind enough to supply milk, butter, OJ, yogurt, water bottle, bread and a more which was a nice touch! Such a nice time, we will be back again!!!

Left on 12/24/2011 for a stay in October 2011
Well, we would have liked to have written a Review sooner, but have both been so very busy. But it sure seems appropriate to mention now just how excited we both are to return to The Hoblet next week, to spend the week over New Year's in such a cozy, peaceful, and magical place.
We can't wait to see and enjoy the warm welcomes again, of Petra, Mush, and their family of animals, (especially, Sheldon the pot-bellied pig). The weather and scenery were absolutely perfect back during our first visit in October, 2011. We just know that this trip will be just as wonderful. ... But admit, we would love a little snow on the trees. Oh, what a beautiful white wonderland it would be !!
Thank you Petra and Mush, for creating such an inviting place. We look forward to seeing you next week!
Have a wonderful Christmas! -

The "Honeymooners"
Dearing, Georgia USAThe perfect honeymoon rental
Left on 10/13/2011 for a stay in October 2011
My partner and I decided to rent the Hoblet and visit Niagra Falls after our Commitment Ceremony in October, 2011. We couldn't have picked a better place to stay! Petra offered an airport service, and picked us up when we flew in. She was so warm and welcoming from our first meeting. The airport service was such a relief after such a long day of flying. We didn't have to worry about renting a car at the airport and navigating in a new environment.
Upon arrival we were awestruck by the beauty of the Hoblet and the surrounding property. Petra arranged for us to get a rental car, and left us several brochures and maps highlighting the tourist opportunities at the Falls. She gave great advice on which activities to skip, and which ones we shouldn't miss.
We enjoyed the Falls and the tourist activities, but our favorite part of our trip was coming back to the Hoblet and relaxing in such a peaceful place. We spent hours out in the hammock and around the fire talking and making new memories together. We enjoyed the animals and fell in love with their newest rescue, Sheldon the pot-bellied pig.
Our only small hurdle, as honeymooners, was the bunk bed. But we found creative ways to snuggle and cuddle. After the first few days, we had adjusted and it wasn't even an issue.
As the days of our trip drew to a close, we were sad to have to leave. We fell in love with the Hoblet, the animals, the Falls, and the surrounding area. It was our first trip to Canada, and we had never been somewhere so beautiful. We felt completely relaxed and "at home". Our hosts were very kind and made sure that we didn't want for anything during our stay with them. We had the best week of our lives, and it was a joy to spend it with such beautiful people. Thank you Petra and Mush for everything. You made our Honeymoon perfect! We can't imagine it being any better. We will definitely be back to visit Canada, visit you, and visit the animals. Give Sheldon a big hug and kiss for me. :)

From my first contact with Petra to our parting words she made the stay so comfortable. She is so prompt to respond and is a wealth of information, we would not have felt so at home anywhere else. The Hoblet is a perfectly hidden little charm, tucked away like you are in your own world. I can say there is nothing I can complain about and that was the most surprising to me. I can definitely see ourselves returning to the Hoblet in the future. Thank you Petra.

We stayed at the Hoblet in September, 2011. It is a charming, well-furnished and immaculately clean cabin in a rural area about 15 minutes from Niagra Falls. The location is quiet and a nice change from the bustle in the city of Niagra Falls. The owners are fun and helpful, and had good suggestions for sightseeing that we would not have known about. It was also fun to interact with the animals (donkeys, a horse, several dogs) that the owners have rescued. (If you are not a dog person, they will shut them away from the cabin.) I highly recommend this rental - we would go back in a minute.

From the initial contact via email to our final goodbyes Petra went out of her way to help us. This included advice on airports, booking transport to her house and helping with car hire. When it was obvious I was very nervous about driving in a strange place (with no GPS) on the wrong (to me) side of the road she even had her mom come and give us a guided tour to help me get the "feel" of the place and gain my confidence. I can honestly say whenever I expressed a concern or just general query she was there to help.
The hoblet itself was wonderful, my mum, myself and my 7 year old son all thoroughly enjoyed our accomodation. Seeing the donkeys so relaxed and happy added a special dimension to our stay that I lack the words to describe.
The only disappointing thing about our stay was that we had to leave!! My best wishes to Petra Mush and all the gang. -

Petra knows all the best places to go and gave us many great tips and a lot of super advise that made our visit to the falls area even better. The the fire inside the circle of elements is the perfect place to way to relax after a busy day. My Fiance (sorry had to mention it, got engaged while staying at the hoblett!) and I as well as another couple stayed at the Hoblet for 2 nights while visiting Niagara Falls. Petra could not have been more helpful and hospitable. The hoblet is approximatey a 15 minute drive to the Falls, and as others have mentioned before, it is just wonderful to come back after a long day/night and be able to spend time with friends & family, cooking, listening to music, playing games or sitting by the fire. Note that there is 1 bedroom with a bunkbed, we alternated btw. the bedroom & the blowup air mattress which was not a problem at all. Also note that Petra & Mush live on the property, just behind the hoblett, but once again, no issue here, the best neighbors? one could have! We did not do the "meet & greet" with the animals, but they are on the property so we did get some great pictures. We were traveling up to Toronto following our visit to Niagara and once again, Petra could not have been more helpful offering information and tips. I would definitely recommend the hoblet for anyone visiting Niagara Falls!

Wow - what an enjoyable time we had at the Hoblet for 5 nights with our 2 kids. It was a pleasure each night to come back from sightseeing to a quiet, serene place to relax and play games with the family, and rest up for the next day. We loved riding bikes in the morning and evening on the rural and flat roads (we're from a hilly place!), listening to and temporarily catching the many frogs in the pond (Powder caught one on a more permanent basis), hanging out with and petting the dogs (Katie, Powder and Mutsy), meeting and greeting the donkeys with Mush, and watching the other animals (horse, mules). We used the barbecue for burgers one night, and enjoyed s'mores by the fire in the Circle of Elements another evening. The hoblet was beautifully decorated and had a rustic, peaceful feel to it, surrounded by nature -- which was a welcome change from staying in a typical (noisy, crowded) hotel room near the tourist area. It was nice to have some basic food items already there when we arrived (muffins were awesome). Petra and Mush were wonderful, helpful hosts. We appreciated the tips for what to see/do while there, and for sharing their personal internet hub with us so we could look online for tour info. and let our college son get his daily online fix (ok - we used it a little too...). Our favorite places to go (besides the Falls): The Wet Jet Boat ride, Maid of the Mist, the Mandarin buffet, Timmy Hortons (great sandwiches and iced coffee!), Sherkston Shores and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Thanks again Petra and Mush for everything (especially for keeping us "cool" during a rare Canadian heat spell). We hope to return some day! Will refer to family and friends looking for a peaceful, enjoyable getaway near one of the world's amazing sights.

My partner and I stayed at "The Hoblet" June 13-18 and absolutely loved our stay. Our hosts were so friendly and accommodating - even giving us their internet hub for the week as we needed internet for work. So generous! The pantry was stocked with milk, juice, yogurt, farm-fresh eggs, muffins, cheese, butter, etc. it was such a thoughtful treat. Both Petra and Mush were beaming with kindness and went out of their way to make our stay incredible - and very relaxing. We felt right at home.
The Hoblet is very well appointed, extremely comfortable and spotless! It is very private and a great getaway that I highly recommend. We loved the "circle of elements" fire pit, waterfall, and the lovely view into the woods that surround the property. There are windows and sky-lights galore which, with the high-ceilings, make the space bright and cheery.
We highly recommend it and will be back!

A place to stay if you want to be away from the city to enjoy the sereness of the woods and yet near enough to the main tourist Niagara falls attractions. My husband, 12 year old son & I stayed with Petra, Mush & the donkeys for 4 nights & loved every minute of it-all of us. Petra greeted our late arrival (close to 10 p.m.) with a big smile and a roaring fire in the outdoor fire circle. We met 2 of the donkeys, who were curious about us(and met the others next morning).
Originally conceived as a yoga retreat, the cabin is beautifully laid out, warm, and welcoming, with lovely touches (including a bouquet of absolutely beautiful fresh tulips on the table!) The refrigerator was stocked with 1/2 dozen farm fresh organic eggs, butter, cheese, orange juice and yogurts--and to my husband's delight, real half and half for his coffee (also provided).
The beds have lovely European linens (Petra's mom is German and advised on European hospitality). There is only one bedroom, with a bunk with full-size bed under a twin, so we all slept in the same room (except one night when my 12 year old de-camped to the living room to escape dad's snoring-the sofa's comfy and gives a modicum of separation between kids and adults, if that matters to you).
Petra and her husband Mush provided us with bicycles, helped my son meet and feed the donkeys they've rescued, and let us play with the dogs once we made it clear we were dog people (they were fully prepared to keep the dogs separate if we required it, but three dogs is just right for us!)The fire circle was prepared every evening.
But we had plenty of privacy. The Hoblet was all ours, separate from the main house and far enough from the animals that if we hadn't wanted to, we didn't have to deal with them (but we wanted to).
Caveats for some (not for us): t.v. reception's not great (Petra said; we never tried, too much else to do!), wireless reception for internet was spotty (closer to tourist areas 15 mins away, reception's fine), & there are bugs (it's in a wood, for pete's sake!)
It's just delightful. We'll be back! -

We absolutely would recommend this space to anyone and everyone. We had the the most wonderful and relaxing long weekend trip here. We were looking for something a little more private and secluded to help us relax for our time spent away. We couldn't have chosen a better place. This location was only about a 15-20 minute (very direct) drive from Niagara Falls, and well worth the drive. Imagine enjoying all that you can at the Falls... and then coming home to relax in the forest, with a fire in the fire pit awaiting your arrival. Amazing!!! We had so much room inside and outside of the Hoblet. This was also one of the most affordable spaces we've stayed in. You get so much for what you spend to stay here. This experience was just worth every penny!
We enjoyed the patio for some meals, the sauna to relax, and enjoyed the company of the donkeys, horses, dogs, and of course Petra the owner. We feel so fortunate to not only have found a new destination to travel to, but to have made some new friends. We absolutely love Petra and the gang. Talk about meeting fantastic people!!! We felt right at home as soon as we pulled into the driveway, until we hugged during our fair wells. If you haven't had the opportunity to stay here at the Hoblet, I would absolutely make this a must-see & stay.

The Hoblet is unique, relaxing and only minutes from the hustle and bustle of Niagara Falls and attractions. Petra, Mush and the gang are such wonderful hosts and make you feel welcome.
We stayed 3 nights at the Hoblet and 1 night at a falls view hotel during our trip. I must say that I enjoyed the Hoblet so much better! It is well appointed, had everything we needed and you can't beat the atmosphere! The donkeys, mule, horse, dogs, frog pond, a few stray chickens and sitting by the bonfire listening to the hoot owl and the frogs are something you don't get at a hotel in the city.
Petra's recommendations cannot be beat! Talk to her before you make your plans and find out the secret spots. Not only will it save you money but you will enjoy your stay in Ontario so much more.

A much needed weekend of both excitement and relaxation were in order, and we were so very fortunate to have found that.. and more!
We were greeted by Petra upon our arrival, and felt so incredibly welcomed. After our tour of the Hoblet, we knew that was exactly where we were supposed to be. Petra's incredible attention to detail is apparent, and our every need was met.
On our first night at the Hoblet, we enjoyed sitting by the Circle of Elements, sipping wine, and enjoying the fruit and cheese provided by our wonderful hosts. We visited the animals and as exhausted as we were from our drive from Connecticut, we were able to enjoy the serenity of our surroundings before drifting off to sleep...
Our second day was filled with excitement! Petra suggested we experience the Whirlpool Jet Boat at Niagara-on-the-Lake... spot on suggestion! It was amazing!!! After we dried off, we walked through town, enjoying lunch and the many unique shops along the way. What a picturesque place! The afternoon was spent at the Falls where the mist was refreshing, as it was 90+ degrees at the time of our visit! We returned "home"in the evening to a roaring fire in the Circle of Elements... what an awesome surprise!
We left the following morning feeling lucky to have experienced such a tranquil place. We hope to return in the near future with the children, as they were not happy that they missed all that we described!
Thank you, Petra and Mush for providing such a wonderful place for all to enjoy!! -

I stayed at the 'hoblet' with my wife and her parents, and we were all pleasantly surprised at how perfect this place was for our vacation. We were looking for an affordable vacation home that was a little bit off-the-beaten path and we ended up getting so much more!
Petra is a delightful host - extremely warm and hospitable. When we arrived, she immediately made us feel at home, and made sure that we had everything that we needed.
The property is in a quiet secluded area a short distance from the overly-commercial Niagara Falls area, surrounded by beautiful woods - you can hear the wild turkeys scurrying around at night. When you enter, you're immediately greeted by Petra's rescued donkeys, horses and dogs. There is a beautiful pond and fire pit, and the hoblet is secluded and perfectly set in this picturesque property.
The hoblet itself is so unique - covered in rustic wood panels with the bark still on, and grass on the roof. Just amazing. The interior of the hoblet is very modern and clean.
Our breakfast needs were fully covered - the fridge had milk, butter, cheese, organic eggs; coffee and tea in the pantry, fresh croissants, fresh fruits, etc.
And to make the experience even more perfect; when we came home at night after dinner, we found that Petra had started the fire in the fire pit for us. And it is a beautiful fire pit. What a perfect way to end the day!
I can't say enough good things about this place. Petra, thanks again for a wonderful stay, and we will definitely return!Response from Petra L Cuddy - 06/04/2010

The service that we received at the Hoblet was "second to none." In a nutshell, it was more than excellent. In every way possible way the owners bent over backwords to make our stay a very enjoyable experience!
We loved the Hoblet and the owners! It is a beautiful cottage in a serene and peaceful place that allows you to enjoy the scenic nature of the woods. The cottage has so many "nice-touches" to the place. Everything from the "circle of elements" that has the bonfire pit, to being fully furnished with pots and pans and basic cooking needs, to a semi-stocked fridge and pantry that provides for delicious breakfast and snack foods, a relaxing realistic electric fireplace, and best of all--an actual sauna!
Next, the Hoblet is an excellent choice to support eco-tourism, i.e. to be environmentally concientious while on vacation. The Hoblet comes with an awesome "green/living" roof, an organic garden that you can help with, and an animal rescue mission on site that has rescued a variety of equestrian animals.
Lastly, the Hoblet is an excellent choice for "finding ones-self." One of the owners is a Yoga instructor, and utilizes the Hoblet for her classes. So, along with the beautiful scenery and excellent hospitality, you also get to utilize any of the Yoga class supplements, such as the relaxing nature music, beautiful artistic decorations and plants, incense, and even a yoga video!
So, if you are on vacation to see the falls, or just need a getaway, I would totally recommend staying at the relaxing and beautiful Hoblet.

Petra was a wonderful hostess, hospitable and very accomodating. Having been a tour guide, she was able to provide useful advice on the local attractions and help make arrangements for our stay. She was very solicitous of our comfort and went out of her way to ensure that we had a pleasant experience. The "hoblet" was both quirky and charming, located as it is in a donkey sanctuary. It was ideally situated to take advantage of all that the region has to offer (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Falls, the casinos, family attractions, etc.) while providing a quiet place to retreat and just relax. The "hoblet" was well appointed and clean and had many desirable elements including a sauna, skylights and a wall of glass that opened on to beautiful natural surroundings. The kitchen was generously stocked with wholesome food and there were ample clean linens. Although we were unable to take advantage of it, Petra is a yoga instructor and can suggest a variety of rejuvenating options, including private yoga lessons and massage. We very much enjoyed our stay and would recommend the "hoblet experience".

My wife, one-year-old daughter, and I were recently in search of a perfect weekend getaway. We found everything we could have hoped for at Nature's Energy Centre.
First of all, the location couldn't be beat. Nestled in a quiet forest in rural Ontario a mere 15 minutes from the Falls, the guesthouse was bounded on one side by a babbling brook and hardwood forest and on the other by a moving animal sanctuary that is home to rescued horses, mules, and donkeys.
The private yoga studio, which doubled as our guest apartment, featured a full-service kitchenette, a private bath with infrared sauna, and an electric fireplace. Five sets of sliding glass doors overlooked the surrounding woods while a series of mirrored skylights allowed for abundant natural light by day and hours of stargazing by night.
We couldn't have been more comfortable. Even our typically restless baby girl slept the entire night--a rare but welcome treat!
From the studio, a wooden path led to the property's signature "circle of elements"--a spherical firepit of rock, water, and wood. We found the "circle" an excellent place to de-stress and unwind.
Beyond the "circle of elements" was a working organic garden and greenhouse. Ambitious guests can spend time gardening; a list of daily tasks is provided upon request. We opted to explore the property's ponds, streams, and waterfalls, and to take it easy instead.
Regarding activities, our gracious hosts were well connected to the local tourist industry and able to secure discounts to many local attractions. They are also able to arrange private art classes, yoga sessions, and massages--all of which are given in the secluded comfort of this home-away-from home.
In short, we can't say enough about this place and can hardly wait to return. Like their website says, if you're looking for a unique getaway in an intimate country setting with an emphasis on personal attention and good energy, then Nature's Energy Centre is for you!
