Cleveland, OhioA "Home-Away-From-Home"
Left on 10/29/2012 for a stay in October 2012
My husband and I, along with 2 other couples, stayed at The Somerset from October 15th thru the 18th. Since this was my first bed and breakfast experience, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. After our long drive in from Cleveland, we were graciously greeted at the front door by Hilda McKenney who invited all of us to sit down and relax in front of the nice toasty fireplace in the living room. From that point on , I felt like Hilda was a long-lost relative who had welcomed us into her home for a vacation! As a matter of fact, in the evenings after enjoying a full day of visiting the quaint shops and enjoying the wide variety of restaurants that are within walking distance of the Somerset, I found myself saying to my husband...Well,it's time to head "home" because Hilda truly made you feel "at home"!
I also cannot say enough about the amenities. The Master Suite was beautiful - we slept with our balcony door open every night and enjoyed the sounds of the waves hitting the beach. The breakfasts were great, especially Hilda's home-made preserves! We spent many relaxing hours sitting on the back veranda enjoying the beautiful view of the lake, and sampling some of the region's delicious wines.
We are definitely planning another visit with Hilda at The Somerset and have already recommended it to many friends and family members.

My wife and I stayed at Somerset for three nights with our 1 year old daughter in July 2012. It came highly recommended by my parents, but still we were positively surprised. It's a wonderful place in a wonderful location. The rooms are tasteful, clean, and very spacious. Breakfast on the patio with a view of Lake Ontario was one of the highlights of our vacation. Thanks to our host for a perfect stay; we can't wait to come back!

We loved it.
We stayed for two nights in the West Wing, and I cannot wait to go back. I can't write enough good things about this B&B.; There are some great reviews, so ditto. It was magical to be there with my mom & sister, I'll never forget it, it was perfect. Looking out at Fort George, the ocean-like lake, the huge bedroom with comfy beds & living room, just awesome. Hilda is an excellent inn keeper, very professional & welcoming, helpful with our dinner & day plans & made us breakfast both mornings with care.
I've stayed at the Prince of Wales & a bunch of hotels at the Falls...this is a different experience waiting for you.
We loved it.

Toronto, CanadaLa Dolce Vita!
Left on 09/05/2011 for a stay in August 2011
When it comes to vacationing and experiences, there is nothing like staying at a B&B;! Wanting more than a hotel stay, we searched the Niagara-on-the-Lake region for a place suitable for a family of four; with children aged 12 and 7.
I came across Somerset Bed & Breakfast, a place I had absolutely loved when visiting the area in the 1990's — and was ecstatic to find it was still open. Hoping it was available for the days we were visiting the area, I was immediately contacted back by Hilda McKenney. Hilda is friendly, very professional and accommodating to her guest's individual needs. One phone call was all it took to book another stay!
The classic all-white decor can make a parent uneasy, but if your children are older and appreciative of such surroundings, one will absolutely love the location and place to stay. I had always been impressed by the room with the view: upon entering the foyer of this manor, my family was equally taken by the room with the view — the stunning, sparkling blues of lake that meet sky extending before us... the living room view is magnificent and magical!!
We stayed in the Master Bedroom, the largest suite that gave us all plenty of space and privacy. As every parent will appreciate: there was a separate room for parents and another for the children. Hilda went the extra mile by offering an additional comfy cot for our daughter and son; who enjoyed having so much space and a TV of their own.
A private full length balcony: perfect for reading the morning newspaper; sunning in the afternoon or star gazing at night. The nights were special for us, as we curled up with extra wool blankets on lounge chairs, all of which were provided. Coming from Toronto, it was a treat to see so many stars! My door to the balcony was usually open: in the mornings for the sounds of waves reaching shore or calming us to sleep. To awaken to blue lake and sky, feel warm winds softly blowing in through curtain sheers — this room is truly what "la dolce vita" is all about.
Hilda's breakfasts — all 4 days were " * * * * *" (5 stars)!!!
She always took into consideration the tastes of all, including our children; and balanced that with the others who were adults. Tastes of the season including fresh fruit cocktail, pancakes, yogurts, homemade granola... crème fraiche to my husband's delight to go with the freshly brewed coffee! One morning saw the best "frittata", an Italian omelette that would make any Italian mother proud! We would have loved to take Hilda home! My son now keeps a copy of the Somerset B&B; postcard in his bedroom, reminding us often that we have to visit Hilda again one day soon :)
As always, we met two other lovely couples and a family; each morning breakfast had lively conversation and was entertaining. Hilda made each one feel welcome. She offered plenty of advice when asked; including the weather forecast for the day, places to see and wineries to visit.
It's a place we will visit again !!! Maybe this time in Fall :)
Thank you Hilda for a wonderful stay!! -

Somerset is our oasis away from home. The property is beautiful. The view of the river/lake is breathtaking. Hilda is a delight in every way. She is responsive; her breakfasts are so delicious! She meets every guests particular needs and remembers them from one visit to the next. When we arrive we are greeted by our dear friend. We have brought 3 new couples back with us to visit the region. Our original stay involved meeting friends from Dallas, TX. They travel all that way, in part, due to the fact that the Somerset and Hilda are so exceptional.

Left on 08/07/2011 for a stay in August 2011
We discovered Somerset house while bicycling around Niagara-on-the-Lake last summer and immediately made a reservation to stay this summer. We arrived on aug 2 and were warmly welcomed by Hilda (she remembered us by name from our brief stop in last summer) We stayed in the Master Suite but looked in the other rooms and they are all wonderful...bright, very clean, large rooms, and fantastic views. Breakfast every morning was fabulous...Hilda made everything fresh and tasty and served it in a very relaxed fashion. It could not have been better. We have already made our reservations for next year...can't wait!!

Staying at Somerset Bed & Breakfast was a dream come true. It was spacious, airy, and very comfortable. The back patio was available at any time, and faced the Lake. It was serene and beautiful, a very relaxing place to stay. The breakfast table was a sight to behold each morning. Hilda was a very skilled hostess and we enjoyed her hospitality, which was second to none. The bedroom suites were a delight, with very comfortable beds. We loved it so much that we stayed there again in October of the same year. Sadly my husband's mobility has deteriorated a great deal, so we can no longer stay anywhere if the front entrance is not accessible, or we have to climb stairs to go to bed. Somerset House is a place which enhances one's stay at Niagara on the Lake, and one feels pampered the moment one walks through that front door, thanks to Hilda's expertise.

Our party of 4 long-time friends has stayed at Somerset annually for the past 8 or 9 years. The location is perfect for just relaxing, strolling about town, wine tasting, shopping, fine dining or play-going. The innkeeper is a treasure and a splendid cook. We couldn't be more pleased!
