We stayed at By The Vines with 2 other couples and all six of us absolutely loved the house. It was furnished very nicely, the kitchen cupboards were neat as a pin and the overall condition of the house was spotless! I have been telling everyone I know to stay here when they visit Niagara-On-The-Lake. It was also so convenient to everything: the shops and boutiques, the wineries and the grocery stores. I'm just sorry we couldn't stay there longer. I will definitely be re-visiting By The Vines and I can't wait!

Barrie, OntarioExtremely convenient rental for a family
Left on 09/19/2012 for a stay in September 2012
Spent 3 days in Niagara-on-the-Lake for a family wedding. Our family included 5 adults (Ggrandmother, Grandmother, Grandfather, Father & Mother) and 3 children under age 7. This house was perfect the perfect size and in the perfect location for our needs. Wedding was held at Notl Gazebo at a waterfront park (<10 minutes drive), reception was at Hillebrand Winery (<5 minutes drive).
House was large enough for 8 plus vistors who dropped in throughout the day. House was very clean, all appliances worked, plenty of dishes and utensils provided and dishwashing supplies were more than adequate. There is large deck in backyard equipped with large patio table, 6 chairs, huge umbrella and natural gas barbeque.
Beds were very comfortable, plenty of towels supplied along with soap and shampoo.
This is the perfect base for a family visiting wine country and the many historic sites in the area (golf course is only 10 minutes away also).
Negatives noted were minor, 1. lawn care could be improved, 2. drain fly infestation in the bathroom on the first night which was cleared by pouring hot water in the secondary ddrain of the wash basin and 3. garage door spring cable let go rendering it unusable for the weekend.
Positive points of this B&B; far outweigh any negative points experienced. I would recommend this location to a friend and will certainly use it again in the future.Response from Scott Webster - 09/20/2012
Owner
Im happy that you enjoyed your stay, i do agree that the lawn did not look very good during yoru stay, i have spoken to the lawncare company and voiced my displeasure, as for the drain flies i am at a loss on this one because its the first time in many years of owning this property that i have heard of this, i have never had this experience myself either. You will be happy to know that the garage door cable was replaced and the door itself was leveled and oiled and is now in perfect working order, its always inconvenient when things like this break but its also impossible to predict when it will happen and i hope it wasnt terribly inconvenient during your stay.

My lasting impression of this place was that it is just the property I should like as a second home if I won the lottery and I could find its counterpart in Nova Scotia (from where my husband comes)! Lovely spacious bedrooms, a huge kitchem and reception room and an enormous basement which we barely touched except to use the computer as it sleeps 8 and there were only 4 of us. I will definitely be back next time we are in the area

Super clean, we had everything what we needed. Wonderful area for cyclists and the house is close to the village.

cleveland, ohincredibly poor customer service
Left on 08/26/2012 for a stay in August 2012
I booked the house for 2 nights in aug 2012 and my credit card was charged a deposit. Approximately a week before our scheduled arrival, I emailed the owner for address/confirmation details. Nearly four days later (and just a few days before I was set to arrive) he replied that he had "no idea" what I was referring to. He let me know that there must be a mistake and he would look into it and refund any money asap. Five days later, after telling me he had no record of my reservation he found my information and was able to refund my deposit. He had very little contact with me during that time and when he did process the refund, did not notify me either.
Needless to say, I had to cancel my trip. I could not find a new booking and Scott was not helpful in that regard. I lost money on travel, tickets to plays at Shaw festival, etc. Not to mention that I also did not get the vacation that I had planned.
I did my research and picked this house based on positive reviews, location, price, etc. I think that all these positive reviews need a little reality check. I informed the chamber of commerce as well, they agreed that this was not suitable and would file a complaint.
My ratings are all one star as a result of the above.Response from Scott Webster - 09/17/2012
Owner
Erin,
Your recolection of the facts is both poor and inaccurate, you did not have a confirmed reservation with us, you submitted a booking request and i processed the deposit at which time it was discovered that my wife had in fact processed another booking that very day which was in fact confirmed, my booking system did not confirm your booking and therefore you were never a confirmed guest, as soon as i discovered the problem which was several weeks prior to your arrival i notified you immediately and offered to assist youy in find another accommodation, you declined my offer and i refunded your money. I am very sorry for the confusion as i previously stated to you and i find it highly regretable that you chose to book tickets etc without a confirmed reservation, had you accepted my assistance in finding another rental i can assure you that you would have in fact been able to enjoy your weekend stay -

We found the home very clean and roomy. There was plenty of room around the kitchen table and the patio table for the 5 us to eat. The gas BBQ was huge. So nice to rent a place that not only sleeps 6 but allows 6 people to have their own space. Having a fruit/vegetable/deli right across the street was convenient as was the nut shop and winery. The grocery store was a 3 minute drive away. It was well located for access to downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Falls, or any where in the Niagara region. The owner was just a phone call away. It really was home away from home.

It was a very nice and clean home unfortunately it is on a main street and very noisy. The location is great as far as how far you have to drive to get to all the wonderful places and wineries.
Response from Scott Webster - 07/26/2012
Owner
I am glad you enjoyed your stay but i was quite surprised to see that you found the location to be very noisy, i personally stay at the property quite often and i have never experienced any noise concerns, and we quite often have guests comment on the fact that they were a bit nervous about the location for noise being on a fairly busy street but that they were pleasently surprised that in fact the noise was minimal at best.

Left on 07/25/2012 for a stay in July 2012
My wife and son stayed at the property mid-week in the summer. The property itself is very well maintained and sufficiently modern. Very open feeling. Everything was clean and ready for our arrival. The only question I had before arriving was whether being on the main road would be too busy. But you barely even notice this from inside at all. In fact, it was beneficial to be in the middle of the Niagara on the Lake area. It made getting to nearby wineries and the falls a little easier. Also great having a grocery store across the street so we could nip across to get some groceries. Loved having a full kitchen (and a bbq outback!) to make our own meals. Woudl recommend this to anyone and look forward to staying there again!

Scott your place was beautiful, clean, spacious, and relaxing. Location of this house is key- especially for families with kids. We were so delighted to arrive and find such a spacious house. There were 6 ladies and not only did it fit us all comfortably, the location was perfect. We needed 2 showers, (which is a must for 6 ladies)so getting ready in the morning was easy, and the great kitchen allowed us to bring in our own food and drinks to enjoy on the patio in a secluded back yard.

We rented the home for 10 nights and had no complaints whatsoever. When we checked in we found the house to be in immaculate condition. It was a very comfortable place to stay, quite roomy, extremely clean, and with everything in working order. The location was very convenient. Niagara-on-the-Lake was a great community to stay in. Everything we wanted to experience in the Niagara Falls area was a short, easy car ride away, but far enough that we were not bothered by the typical buzz and business of tourist destinations.

Left on 01/28/2012 for a stay in October 2011
The house was perfect for our needs: a place for four women to relax and celebrate a friend's 50th Birthday. The location was excellent with Joseph's right in our back yard since we could continue sampling wine once we returned from our booked wine tour on the Saturday and The Old Winery where we had a Saturday evening reservation was only a short taxi cab ride away. The barbecue allowed us to cook up a quick, satisfying meal the night we arrived and the basement area enabled us to watch a movie comfortably. We would definitely consider returning again sometime.

We stayed in this home over the weekend for the Icewine Festival!! We were very happy to arrive after an 8 hour drive to a clean house. Lots of room to sleep, great kitchen and the location was the key for us. The house was very modern and had a beautiful yard and deck, if it was summer when we went, we would of been outside all weekend! Lots of popular wineries on the same street as the house. Nice market with fresh fruits and veggies right in front of the house.
The thing I liked the best was the reasonable price and the location. The only constructive criticism I can give, since everything else was beyond our expectations, is that since we came in the winter and had lots of stuff since we were 4 would have been a cleared driveway from all the snow. It would of prevented bringing snow and mudd in the house!Response from Scott Webster - 01/15/2012
Owner
I am glad to hear you enjoyed your stay! As for the clearing of snow, the snow actually just started the morning of your arrival and even though we do have a snow removal service they typically wait for the snow to stop before coming to clear and if you were parked in the driveway they would have likely skipped clearing the snow until they found an empty driveway!

Overall, bedrooms offer privacy yet there's lots of open living space on the property, which makes it great for entertaining, making this property a much better alternative to a hotel.

I recently took a trip to Niagara on the Lake on a short semi-business semi-getaway trip. I was visting local wineries with the intent on purchasing local wines for use as Christmas gifts for major clients. Rather than going the hotel route, I booked us into this property and I have to say that the experience was fantastic. I would return again in a heartbeat. The location is absolutely perfect and the property itself is immaculate. It is very clean and well maintained, the furnishings are stylish and very comfortable and the service was second to none. It was very much like staying at a home away from home. In addition, my quest for the best in local wines was helped immensely by the property owner who was more than happy to advise me and share his extensive knowledge of the local wine industry. I rate this 5 stars hands down and I will be back.

Both bedrooms contained wonderful queen size beds, so no coin tosses for the best room. It is located right in the districts we wanted to visit and was a short drive into town and the theatre. We Bbqed when not out to dinner. Made our own breakfast, and enjoyed evenings watching movies and chatting about our day's outings. Extremely comfortable, very well equipped, a perfect home away from away. Along with the beauty of the area, and the excellence of the Shaw Festival, this was one of the best vacations of my life. I'll be back next year...and into the future...

Well maintained and comfortable house with the majority of amenities, situated just outside of Niagra on the Lake(a quaint and picturesque town).House is within easy distance from a number of 'must see' things, one of which is Niagra Falls and if you are wine lovers then you are spoilt for choice as there are numerous vineyards.
Having a car to get about is a must.
All in all a fantastic holiday.Response from Scott Webster - 09/04/2011

Left on 09/02/2011 for a stay in August 2011
We rent cottages almost every year, and By the Vines is one of the nicest places we've ever stayed. Loads of pots, pans, dishes, utensils and kitchen tools. Everything was clean and new. The cottage is on a relatively busy main road that leads into Niagara-on-the-Lake, right next door to a winery (handy!) and across the street from a farm market that sells produce, jellies, breads, etc. The only issue we had was that the wifi router did not work, but there was a desktop PC available for us to use. Scott was so attentive to our questions that I'm sure he has fixed it by now. We loved our stay!

lovely house .. but we should have borrowed a sat nav! it was actually really easy to find, but we misswed the turn of the QE2 due to roadworks in the dark and rain and got totally lost in niagara due to being given bad directions and even when we reached virgil we were looking on the wrong side of the road! but 3 hours after leaving toronto we made it and we were very pleased with the house! the children though the pool table was a hoot ... it was small enough to fit on top of the cupboard! downstairs had a bedroom in own mini living area and bathroom and utility ... like a tennage den! The owner provided soap, towels etc in the bathrooms which was really appreciated. very spacious. more or less next door to macdonalds. opposite a market style shop. we didn't notice road noise.
clean (no shoes in doors policy .. just like our own home)
niagara on the lake is actually really pretty (just up the road) -

This place is a home, not a typical rental. It is new and clean and beautiful inside and very comfortable. It is a great place for 3 couples to enjoy - it was really bigger than we needed but cheaper than smaller places. We enjoyed staying here, but wished it was a little closer to the town (maybe this is why the cost was a little less than others). We plan on coming back here in the future.

Nancy,
Thank you for your comments, We pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our property and constantly try to improve, as for the location many of our guests feel we are in the best possible location, a short drive from the old town area and just steps away from many of the local wineries, we are also onyl a short drive from Niagara Falls and many other local attractions, as for the rates, we are much less expensive than most of the properties in the area and i feel we offer much greater value, the rates will likely rise a bit for the 2011 season but we may extend old rates to returning guests.
Thanks again for your comments! -

The location of By-the-Vines is excellent if you enjoy walking. Jackson Triggs is about 15 minutes away by foot, and another 25 minutes will land you in the community of Niagara-by-the-Lake.
The spot is located in front of Joseph's Winery and across the street from an excellent fresh produce market.
It further offers an outdoor patio, BBQ, current movies, laundry, internet access, large kitchen, luxuriant sleeping facilities - which makes it most definitely your home away from home!
I, personally, recommend By-the-Vines as the perfect wine country tourist spot. -

We were 5 adults and a toddler staying at the cottage and had a really nice stay there. We loved the area and would really recommend hiring bikes for a day to explore the recreation trail. We used Zoom in Niagara on the lake. The house was great for us with plenty of space and a lovely balcony. It would have been great to have had a few additional things in the kitchen such as baking trays to put in the oven - it felt like it was kitted out more for people who ate a lot at the local restaurants - we would had loved to, but with a toddler it wasn't so practical. The owner was also very accommodating when we had to stay an additional couple of nights due to the volcanic ash issues. The basement bedroom felt a little cold, so an extra couple of blankets might be good down there. Thanks for a lovely stay

Left on 04/02/2010 for a stay in March 2010
-This house was perfect in many respects: the size, the location, the layout. We have a 2-year old, so we were able to put her to bed early downstairs, but the adults could still enjoy the evening upstairs without having to tiptoe.
-When my parents arrived first, the heat was not working. When they called our host, he said he could not make it out until after 9 in the evening. Thankfully, my father was able to get the necessary parts (batteries) and fix it, but we were put off that the host did not seem at all concerned about the situation; even for the sake of the house itself! The host did indicate he would pay for the batteries when I asked, but when I discovered they cost less than $5, I felt silly about demanding that.
-None of the frying pans in the kitchen were fit to cook with (all the non-stick material was flaking off), so we went out and bought a new one.
-The living room could really use some more light to make it easier to read in the evening.
-Despite the few minor issues, we had a marvelous time, and would readily return- preferably in better weather!Response from Scott Webster - 04/02/2010

I am very sorry that you fealt i was not concerned about the dead batteries in the thermostat, i was infact very apologetic and did call my maintenance man however he was not available until later that evening as indicated, I tried to call several times to make sure you were able to rectify the problem, these things do happen from time to time, I will however replace the frying pans as i was not made aware they were in need of replacing, please accept my apologies for that

Left on 11/10/2009 for a stay in July 2009
With a great pleasure I am writing this feedback. We spent 3 days and 2 nights at 'By the Vines' and had nothing but positive emotions. Before we arrived, I was worried that the place will be in the middle of nowhere (a few miles away from Niagara-on-the-Lake) but location was actually perfect - right in between the town and vineries (5-10 min drive either way). There is a grocery store across the street and quite a few restaurants to please any taste in 5 min drive radius.
The first thing we noticed when we arrived is how clean everything was.
Unlike at some places, everything we need was provided, from house ware and bed sheets to soaps and towels. Though weather was not as friendly as we would hope, we got some sun and were able to enjoy the deck. This was our favorite place whenever we could go out. However when we couldn't enjoy outside we had plenty of room inside, including large table in dining area, comfortable sofas in the living room and lots of games and room to play them in the basement.
We had a great time and the only stroke of dark colors in this rainbow of positive emotion was the camera charger I left in the house when we left.
Fortunately it wasn't lost and Scott, the owner, even drove to the place from Toronto to pick it up and deliver it back to me. This was a perfect finish to a great start. Thank you very very much! -

The Walking/Cycling Trail runs right past the front of the house and does indeed pass right in front of Stratus Vineyards, Jackson Triggs and does take you all the way to the old town area, the old town would be a very healthy walk but certainly not out of the question

We discovered By the Vines by accident after searching the web for a hotel
to stay in at St. Catharines. We found their rates very reasonable for our
family as well as providing a much better living arrangement than any hotel
ever could.
We arrived late at night and everything was ready for us as promised. We
found the home well maintained, clean and suitably equipped. We were
worried a bit about noise from the main road it is on, but surprisingly, there
is little traffic that travels at night, so it was very quiet. We were awakened
one night by a "helicopter" landing.....in reality it was the frost fans running
in the nearby vineyards. However, they never held us back from a good
nights sleep.
Shopping and groceries are all with in easy travel distance as are all the
local historical and tourist sites, not to mention the many wineries.
We would highly recommend By the Vines as a place to stay when traveling
anywhere in the Niagara on the Lake, Niagara Falls or St. Catharines area. -

This house and its location are better than we expected.Beds are really confortable and the kitchen is well equipped .A soap shelf in the showers would be a good investment.
We will certainly return. -

We stayed 2 nights in August so we could visit wineries and the Shaw Festival. The house was lovely, clean and spacious. There was a big deck, and a grocery store accross the road. The location is just ourside Niagara-on-the-Lake and is very close to a number of wineries. There were six of us, and we loved having our own space and kitchen. Thanks, we would highly recommend the house.

The house was perfect. It had plenty of room for our small children and a great backyard. The beds were very comfortable and there were lots of kitchen supplies. Having internet access was a real treat!
The only drawbacks were the glass coffee table (not very child friendly) and no dish towels.
Thanks for a great experience.

We are a family of 5: 2 adults and 3 children. This was the perfect house for our stay at Niagara-on-the-Lake. At night, kids could play or watch TV in the basement while we could relax on the the main floor. Rooms are large, kitchen is well equipped. The house is located outside the village, but at a 5 minute drive from any point of interest (especially vineyards).

We,a family of 2 adults and 2 children ages 3 and 8, spent a couple of nights in this self catering cottage. The standard of accomodation is absolutely fantastic with every conceivable luxury provided including a games room with small pool table, computer with high speeed internet access and patio with barbecue. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen well equipped.
The cottage is only a 3-4 minute drive from Niagara on the lake which is an absolutely beautiful village on the lake front.Response from Scott Webster - 08/15/2009

We stayed at By the Vines for a weekend and found it to be very clean and comfortable. It had lots of room, open concept kitchen was amazing. My kids loved the family room which was equipped with movies and games. We loved the location because it was close to the wineries and Niagara on the Lake. We will definitely book another weekend.

What a comfortable spot to spend a few days relaxing and forgetting about the real world. It really feels like a home away from home and has everything you could possibly need to make your stay enjoyable. Kitchen is fully equipped, and BBQ works great, even in winter. We recommend visiting the winery next door (Joseph's) and also the bakery at the corner of Mary and Niagara Stone Road (Willow Cakes & Pastries) for a treat or even just some great fresh-baked bread. For good take-out pizza, try Stone Road Grille (Rest-to-Go) in the same plaza as Willow Cakes, and you won't be disappointed.

By the Vines is a great place to stay if you are visiting wineries in the Niagara area. It has all the comforts of home, and cost less than staying in a hotel. My husband, daughter and I stayed there with another couple and had a wonderful time.

Cultured in Ontario
Brooklin, OntarioA divine vacation with stunning views and all in my own backyard
Left on 07/31/2009 for a stay in May 2009
In May of 2009 my wife and I endeavored to agree on a vacation spot that was unique and well priced. Very good friends of ours recommended that we search locally as many people do not know the beauty that is Ontario. They further suggested Niagara on the Lake as their destination of choice due to the culture, vineyards, sight seeing and proximity.
Subsequently another couple recommended "By The Vines" as their favourite spot and they highly suggested we contact the properties management.
From that moment onward we were blown away by the professionalism, care and concern and the attention to every possible detail we received.
The service has been to date by far the best we have received.(and we have travelled the world and stayed in 5 Star establishments.)
The home is well situated, nestled into vine country. It is a very cozy and comfortable home that we felt welcome in and very at home. Within a short distance we had access to some gorgeous and famous wineries and stunning immaculate Golf courses (as we are avid golfers). We did not have an opportunity to get to the casino but we did take in a show and spent on day in Niagara Falls.
The only problem is my wife wants to come here twice a year now in the spring/summer and now the fall!!! Heck.....I am game for that....I just don't want her to know. -

Our stay was fantastic, we have stayed in NOTL many times and we were very pleasently surprised when we arrived at by the Vines to see how well maintained it was, not to mention it had everything that we needed, the winery is so close you can just walk out the backyard right into the vineyards! But unless you leave the backyard you dont even know its there! Highly recommend, we will be back for sure, not only is it a great property but also cheaper than many we have stayed at before taht were not nearly as nice!
