Norwich, VermontLocation!
Left on 05/02/2013 for a stay in April 2013
Nci is an incredibly beautiful spot. Removed from the sometimes hectic Florida mainland, this island is a tranquil escape.
The pace of life slows way down once you board the ferry. Golf carts and walking are your only form of transportation once you arrive on the island. The Ncic arranges everything, from parking and luggage transport, grocery delivery... really pretty seamless operation.
When we arrived at the house our belongings had already been placed on the porch. The Lazy Dolphin is not the type of place to stay if you aren't a fan of stairs. With five different levels of living space, there are stairs all over the place. The outdoor spiral staircases are not for the faint of heart, especially as you climb to the "crow's nest", but well worth the journey let me tell you! The view from the topmost deck is absolutely a perfect 360' panorama. Birds soar over your head, at dusk dolphins swim along the shoreline... breathtaking.
With all of that said, the house is in need of some care. Upon arrival the front door key didn't work, nor after having it "fixed" did this remedied the problem. Thankfully the second floor screen door was broken and we gained entry that way (we could have also gone through the 3rd floor screen door for that was broken also). The kitchen wasn't as well equipped as I had hoped (no cookie sheets for one), the freezer door was frozen shut, the refrigerator froze everything no matter what temp. you set it at... could go on and on but have to say the location made up for everything! The pool was delightful, the sound of the ocean unforgettable, the early morning call of the birds memorable. The beaches were stunning and very isolated. Would I return? Definitely, my family had such a great time fishing off the beach, playing in the pool, exploring the island! We searched for coconuts to eat and cooked fish almost every night! If you can make 4 teenagers happy all at once you have succeeded in the planning the perfect vacation!

Lazy Dolphin is a nice house. We stayed there (rented two houses on the same street) in March and loved to location. Arguably the best location of all house of that size.
The house is in a bit of disrepair however. The sliding doors off the kitchen simply do not close, the screen door off the porch gets stuck hitting the floor (like the entire house has shifted a bit), sliding doors on the third level are listed at "do not use", the pool would not get warm (they tried) and the dishwasher was out of service for our entire visit! They looked at it and said it would take a week to get the part. Really? A week for a part? We are hoping to get a refund for that incipience, but who knows... (It was a real drag washing dishes for 10 days with a very large group of people.
Until the house gets a complete going through by the owner (North Captiva Island Club seem incapable of a deep dive to fix things), I don't think it will get better.

Thanks for your feedback. Sorry about the Dishwasher. The part arrived and it has been fixed. The sliders have been adjusted and the house has gone through and all items needing attention have been addressed. Prior to season, the home had a new washer/dryer installed, New living room couch, a couple new flat screen tvs, all decks and railings painted and new pool chairs.

All the employees of North Captiva Island Club were very nice & helpful.
The house is located just a few yards from the beach, but getting on the beach was hard because of beach is eroding away at that point of the island. The kitchen needs to be better supplied, needs a new dishwasher, new pots & pans and really need a 4 slice toaster. We will be back to rent this house again in the future. -

Left on 01/12/2013 for a stay in December 2012
Just loved our brief stay at this charming place on North Captiva Island. There were seven of us, and the spaciousness of the Lazy Dolphin was more than ample, giving all of us room to relax, have some privacy, and revel in the expansive views of the ocean which was less than 100 feet from the property.
Electric golf carts are the primary mode of transportation on the island, making it all the more pristine for visitors. But for those who are athletic, you can jog, hike, kayak, or cycle as well.
This place is a haven for those who want to get away, unwind and enjoy the abounding nature that permeates the island. We saw numerous sea birds during our brief stay, along with a family or raccoons!
Food and drinks at the pool bar were wonderful, although we primarily cooked at home during our stay, the kitchen very expansive, and easy to accomodate any number of chefs who want to get in on the action.
I welcome a return visit in the near future.

This is our 5th time back to the island and as always it was welcoming and very relaxing. We rent a different home each year and normally we are more than pleased with our choice. The location of Lazy Dolphin is indeed just steps from the beach, which was great. The house needs some work though - the icemaker in the fridge worked intermittently and the separate ice maker (stand alone unit) did not work at all. The fridge also could not regulate the temperature and we lost a lot of fruit, vegetables and items such as sour cream and yogurt.

Manager
Hi,
We have done some work to the house, new fresh paint, new linen, repaired the fridge and etc. The ice maker on the the other hand although still not repaired we are working on it. We provide bags of ice over at the club for guests with malfunctioning ice makers. We apologize for any of the inconvenience this may have caused you.

The Island Club staff was terrific and helpful in every way. The house has a great floor plan, lots of scenic decks, large kitchen, spectacular pool and views from the crow's nest, and excellent location to the Gulf. We found the furnishings to be soiled and worn and some of the linens were stained and ragged. Kitchen appliances were not not all in working order or efficient. A rating of 5 stars is hardly possible. For large families not looking for fine amenities, this home is good. We will definitely be returning to North Captiva with 3 other families. Would consider renting this home again if updates and repairs were made as the pool area, outdoor shower and bar were wonderful.

60003Great vacation...just too short
Left on 04/02/2012 for a stay in March 2012
Fantastic island and Lazy Dolphin was the perfect home for our family. The home is literally 50 steps to the beach. There is a tropical, sandy path leading to the beach. We hardly wore shoes this trip. The house has a clean, heated pool and an outdoor shower we used everyday. Lots of stairs but we didn't mind. Well equipped kitchen. Bring all groceries including spices. I just brought a small bag from home of different spices including salt. There are plenty of bath and beach towels. There is a hairdryer although I never used it. You'll find 4 bikes at the home that we used often. After touring the island and seeing the different homes I would stay at this home again because of the location to the beach, the space and the crows nest is one of the highest on the island. Watch the sunrise, sunset and stars at night. The only complaint is the dryer did not work well so we hung everything in the screened porches. Be sure to double check your charges at the end of the trip. They mistakenly charged us but did credit it back when I brought it to their attention. I don't recommend charging to the house. It's too difficult to keep track. Restaurants are expensive. We went for lunch by the pool. 3 child cheeseburgers, a grouper sandwich and fish burrito was $83.
We hope to come back next year and will choose the Lazy Dolphin. -

New Lenox ILPoorly maintained and bad service.
Left on 01/25/2012 for a stay in January 2012
The view is lovely and the floorplan is great for a family. That is where the positives end. It's just a ran down rental on the inside. Everything needs repainted, railings are loose, doors don't slide properly, pool heater didn't work, phones were unreliable, TV didn't work in two bedrooms.
And the worst part is there is no one to talk to regarding the problems. You call into maintenance talk to a voicemail and no one calls you back or comes to work on the problems. You're on your own.
The house would be great if it was just taken care of and there was some sort of reliable repair available on the island.
You don't want to have your vacation interupted by poor service. My vacation was and it really angered me. They burnt me once it won't happen again.
Hopefully you can avoid the same experience. There are many other choices on North Captiva other than the Club. I will seek those out in the future and I would suggest everyone look at other options. As a first timer I didn't realize all of the other choices. Now that my eyes have been opened I could do the trip much better the second time.

The house was in a great location with amazing views and a nice pool. The master bedrooms had old scratchy linens and only one of the tiny TVs worked. The bathrooms were ok, but dated and needed repainting. The kitchen had a missing cabinet door, no dishtowels and a broken ice maker. There is no games table as the rental pictures show.

We had a terrific time at the Lazy Dolphin. The views were incredible in all directions. It was steps from the beach and we had so much fun exploring the Florida shore. We found numerous conch, crabs, sea urchins, and a plethora of sea shells. The highlight was when a manatee swam up and let me pet it's back. What an experience! There was plenty of room for our family in the house. The house was aging a bit(missing cabinet door, ice machine inoperable), but it was clean. We were pleased to have a nice pool that stayed at the perfect comfortable temperature. It was nice to jump in the refreshing water after spending the day on the beach. My son was disappointed that there was no more foosball table and the pool toys were unuseable. Check-in was slow and there was only one person checking in guests. Our golf cart ran out of power on the way to the house and we had to walk. No one answered the emergency phone number we had just been given. A couple of hours later, they brought us another golf cart. Aside from those few things, our vacation was fantastic. We would definately stay at the Lazy Dolphin, again.

Left on 06/15/2011 for a stay in June 2011
Let me start by saying, we had a fantastic vacation and North Captiva is a wonderful place for a family vacation.
While I think the Lazy Dolphin is a great home, with many pluses, there were also many minuses from our perspective.
Carpet - it's seen it's time. Really should update it, or consider doing tile floors. Just so dirty, nobody wanted to stand in any of the bedrooms for very long.
Bicycles and Foosball - for the kids, they were really looking forward to this, as all the info and pics all mentioned and show the foosball table, bicycles for use at the property. Both were non-existent.
Overall upkeep of home - could be better. If we're giving a star rating, I'd call this more of a 3.5 Star home rather than 4 or 5 Star just based on basic upkeep/cleanliness. Most of the ceiling lightbulbs thoughout the house were burned out. Again, not a huge deal, but an attention to detail thing.
Electronics/Media - while the home does have 4 TVs and a few DVD players, they are laughable. Circa early 1990's. We travel with many modern electronics that use the most common Hdmi connection these days. There was only one television in the entire house (a small 20" in the kids "gaming area") with an Hdmi. All others were very old/outdated TVs - thus we could not use any of our devices to keep the kids entertained. Many will say "why have TV at a beach getaway" - well, anyone with kids knows you can't stay on the beach or in the water all day and night - you have to have other entertainment as well.
I would definitely recommend North Captiva to friends, we're planning on coming back again next year, however I think there are better homes available in the same price range. -

Every picture of the home shows a foosball table - there is not one there. The home is in need of a week of maintenance. The screen for the pool is ripped. The kitchen needs some items. The drain for the master bathroom was clogged. The hammock is ripped (cannot use it). Tiles are broken. Pool maintenance was there three of our seven days. House location was a bit deceptive - the closest beach has rocks to prevent erosion. You would be better off staying away from the airstrip. Don't bother using bikes or kayak - our paddle broke twice on the same outing and the bike chain kept falling off. We told them about the problem - someone else had the bike an hour later with the same problem.
The Island is beautiful. -

Overall very satisfied with our week on North Captiva Island. We enjoyed what was available including tennis, golfcarts, bikes, kayaking, fishing trip with Captain Will and a water sports day with Captain Mattius. Marvelous!!
Only a few lapses in service; a delayed shuttle waiting for late arrivals while bags of meats and dairy products got warm; only one of two air mattresses delivered and without pump; golf cart had a flat tire; foosball table was nowhere to be found; automatic function on dryer not functioning. Small enough things to be aggravating but not serious enough to spoil the trip. The most relaxing trip that this extended family has ever had together! -

The Lazy Dolphin is a very functional home although becoming slightly dated. The living space, kitchen, bedrooms and pools suited the 6 of us beautifully. The home is beginning to show some wear and tear, and is in need of some updating, but that did not spoil our visit in the least. It is by no means "run down", just needs a little TLC. Most importantly, the quiet and atmosphere of the island was exceptional. The Island Club was so helpful with transportation and and assistance in planning our trip. The most amazing thing about this particular house which makes it special is the location and the views. The beach is steps away and the views from the crow's nest are unbelievable. Did I mention the views? If you're not overly fussy, this house is hard to beat.

Let me start by saying the house is in a fantastic location with wonderful views all around. There is not a spot on the property that doesn't have a great view. We love the island. No cars and no street lights are a plus in my book. The high chairs and pack n plays for the kids were perfect and we were so happy that we did not have to tote them from home. That is a wonderful plus for the rentals. Towels and beds were fine, pillows a little flat. The bathrooms were clean, and functioned well. The dishwasher ran, but was useless (all dishes came out dirty even after we rinsed them), so we spent a ton of time cleaning dishes. And where was the fuse-ball table? The pool rules stated the the pool would be serviced on Saturdays and Wednesdays between a certain time, however they came on Friday around noon to fill the pool, which was unfortunate because then it was too cold to get into. The pool was heated, but the water was not exactly warm. The pump motor was always on during the day when we wanted to be at the pool and it was extremely loud. We loved riding around the island on the golf cart, and the beach was great, and relatively empty. The beach toys were great, the kids had a blast digging in the sand and shells near the gulf. Sunrise and sunset were amazing during our stay, and the weather could not have been better.
