With a spectacular white sandy beach and estuary, this popular beach is among the best that New Zealand has to offer. Great for families or relaxing getaways, discover the Mermaid Pools at low tide, fish off the bridge for dinner or simply enjoy an ice cream from the local store.

A short drive or a walk via Matapouri Bay will take you to Whale Bay, named because it was an ideal location for Maori to launch their early whaling missions. This idyllic white sandy beach is great for swimming and snorkelling with calm, clear blue water. Grab a picnic, your mask and snorkel and enjoy a peaceful walk with stunning views through native Puriri, Pohutukawa and Kowhai trees.

Matapouri also has a playground, tennis court, parking and toilets nearby.

Free things to do in the Area
• Take a walk to the largest kauri tree remaining on the East Coast, Tane Moana
• Fishing off the beach for supper
• Try your hand surfing at Sandy Bay
• Bring a picnic and spend the day at Whale Bay, a picturesque white sandy beach protected by native bush
• Take your camera and enjoy breath taking views of the Tutukaka Coast via a short stroll to the William Parata lookout (access via Dolphin Place).
• Climb Kukutauwhao Island to get to the Tutukaka Lighthouse – expect a pumping heart and mind blowing views!
• Let the kids tire themselves out at Whale Tale Park, a children’s playground located in Ngunguru
• Take a short stroll behind the community library in Ngunguru to feed the ducks (and the occasional greedy eel) and pick some figs when in season
• Pick pipi’s in Ngunguru Estuary (daily limit is 150 per person)
• Enjoy the views from the Whangaumu lookout - turn right at the end of Tutukaka Block Road and follow the road to the end where you will see the walkway sign posted
• Stretch the legs with a bushwalk – turn left into Lawson Drive (almost at the end of Tutukaka Block Road) and follow the signpost at the end of the road.
• Fish off the rocks at Whangaumu Bay
• Bring your ski’s and either jetski or waterski at Kowharewa Bay
• Bring you mask and snorkel and explore Whangaumu Bay. Walk in from the beach and look for stingrays, flounder, juvenile crayfish, snapper, eagle rays and turtles which have been spotted!

• Enjoy a horse trek amongst fantastic native bush with stunning coast views
• Visit the Poor Knights Islands, a spectacular marine reserve with world class diving and snorkelling and see the World’s largest sea cave.
• Dive the HMNZS Tui and HMNZS Waikato

• Hire a kayak and explore the harbour and local bays
• On Sunday’s there is often a fish market offering a selection of fresh fish at J Pier (on the berth below the Whangarei Deep Sea Anglers club)
• Try your hand at golf or bowling at the Ngunguru Sports Club
