Experience Nova Scotia island-living at its finest at the Fennel Old House. Our renovated turn-of-the-century home (accessible by car) sits on a spectacular multi-acre oceanfront site, just 30-feet from the water. Bordered by woods on three sides, it overlooks a picturesque rocky cove and wide bay beyond. The only house you can see from our front deck is a mile across the bay! Guests have called the 180-degree view one of the most amazing they’ve ever experienced. Included is a brand new dock where you can tie up a boat and swim.

The LaHave Islands: A Unique Dest...ination

From the minute you approach Crescent Beach, a popular 1.2-mile long beach which leads from the mainland to the LaHave Islands, you know you’ve come to a special place. After driving down the wide beach (or taking the road behind it) you follow a winding road and cross two bridges. You encounter postcard views along every turn -- colorful houses, old fishing wharves and fishing and pleasure boats passing by. At the end of the road you’ll find our house.

Convenient Location

We're a 7-minute drive from the Lighthouse Route, which runs the mainland between Halifax and Yarmouth... a half-hour’s drive from Bridgewater, which is the area’s main shopping/restaurant area... a 40-minute drive from the historic seaport of Lunenburg and tourist town of Mahone Bay... and an hour-and a half's drive southwest of Halifax and the airport.

The Outside

Enjoy the outdoors from our sprawling yard with flower gardens, 4 sundecks (including a roof deck), floating dock, screen house and screened gazebo by the shore. Swim off the dock, catch crabs, pick wild blueberries and raspberries, play croquet and badminton, and swing on our tree swing. Or just relax listening to the seagulls and watching fishing boats in the bay. In the evening, enjoy spectacular sunsets over the cove and light a fire in our outdoor fire pit to roast marshmallows.

The Inside

The Fennel Old House can comfortably sleep seven adults in 4 bedrooms. The master bedroom has a large, attached changing room, which can also accommodate a crib. The other 2 upstairs bedrooms have three twin beds. A downstairs bedroom has a double bed and adjoins the bathroom.

Our home features large-window views, wood floors, period-moldings, wainscoting and tongue-in-groove walls throughout the upstairs. Come home from a day at the beach or touring to warm in front of one of two wood stoves. The first floor also has baseboard electric heating with thermostats in each room, and portable, safe, high-powered heaters on the second floor.

Eat your meals at the dining room table while enjoying a wide open view of the cove and bay through a large picture window. The kitchen is fully equipped with an electric stove, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, food processor, and quality china and flatware. The living room has a 27' TV/VCR, and a stereo with CD/tape deck. We provide bedding and towels, other supplies such as toilet paper and a washer/dryer.

And yes, we have high-speed wireless internet!

The Area

Locally, there are many attractions. Half a dozen beaches are within a 10-minute drive, including Risser's Beach Provincial Park, which has a fine-sand beach with lifeguards, boardwalk along a back marsh, visitor’s center, a snack bar and shower facility. On the island are many quaint paths and roads to walk or bike, a marine museum, community hall, fish plant and government wharf, two churches and a cemetery. On nearby Crescent Beach, people park their cars on the beach, walk their dogs, surf, kite-board, stroll the beach at sunrise and sunset and swim in the waves.

Several fishermen and their families still live on the islands, some who will take visitors out fishing or on island tours (ask us). Locals also love to share their community's history through casual encounters along the road and at events like the Monday morning coffee hour, serving the best home-made scones and sticky buns around. The community hall also hosts guest lectures and other events.

Along the Lighthouse Route on the mainland are lots of craft and antique shops, artist studios, restaurants, museums and historical sites. Take in musical events, county fairs, farmers’ markets, art shows, ox pulls and more. For sporting activities, rent kayaks, golf at several courses, go horseback riding, and enjoy the resort at White Point Beach, where a day pass let’s you use the pools, yard games and boats.

Don't miss the most famous bakery in Nova Scotia, the LaHave Bakery (15 minutes away). Sit down in its quaint dining area and enjoy an amazing breakfast or lunch!

We are located on LaHave Island, one of the LaHave Islands, which is connected to the mainland by a series of islands and bridges. Originally, the LaHave Islands were home to a vibrant fishing community. Today they are inhabited by a combination of local families (many of whom still fish) and summer residents.

Our rental rates are priced simarly to other higher-end Nova Scotia oceanfront homes. Like most Nova Scotia rentals, we rent from Saturday to Saturday. If staying for two weeks or more, the rate is US$100 less for each additional week.

  My husband and I took my active 80- something parents to Nova Scotia for their 64th anniversary. We were fortunate to have stumbled onto this listing on FlipKey and fell in love with the property. It is absolutely everything it is described to be ! My father loved the property and is convinced it is the most serene place on Earth. He has already asked to go back for his 90th birthday when he plans to sit in the gazebo, with a gin and tonic, and watch the birds on and over the water. Indeed, the view couldn't be more stunning. The property is completely secluded and the tranquility is unmatched. The house is comfortable and large enough for a family or group of friends: the kitchen is extremely well-equipped: the large rooftop and water-view decks will accommodate guests and the gazebo is the perfect spot for a quiet afternoon. If you're looking for tranquility and beauty in Nova Scotia, Fennel Old House is perfect !

  A Truly Vintage Experience

  If you are looking to retreat from the chaos of the city life, The Old Fennel house is just what you may be looking for. The Old Fennel House is nestled on a remote Island that offers both tranquility & comfort. Most of the residence of the island are local fisherman and if you ask politely you can easily purchase live lobsters to enjoy a true lobster feast. The house itself was carefully restored keeping its history alive with a wood burning stove and a clawed tub intact. Within the home you will find some handcrafted pieces by local artists, utensils, towels, pillows, fishing rods, life jackets-- even spices for cooking. You simply need to pack clothes and purchase your own groceries to enjoy this place. It is an ideal location for a romantic getaway or to simply experience what the South Shore of NS has to offer. I personally went with family to experience the South Shore of NS. We do not regret our stay in The Old Fennel House but keep in mind, it is a distance from the locations we ventured to. It was roughly an hour 1/2 from Halifax, two hours from Yarmouth and an hour from Lunenburg & Mahone Bay. Nova Scotia is definitely a place where you will meet genuinely friendly locals and the Old Fennel House is definitely a place to find inner peace and to enjoy the ocean.

  We provide our guests with information and directions to many sites/things to do in the area and most are just 10-30 minutes away. Our home is just a 7-minute driveway from the mainland. These guests happened to choose to drive mostly to further destinations, but that’s not necessary to enjoy everything the South Shore has to offer. Also -- a correction on the time it takes to get to Lunenburg – it’s only about 45 minutes, not an hour. These guests took the long way to get there.
