We stayed here for two nights on our fabulous tour of Sri Lanka and weren't disappointed. We were made welcome with a pot of tea and chat with Wolfgang in the rose garden and well looked after throughout our stay by Marcus and the other staff. We had chosen half board and the food was fantastic - far too much and absolutely delicious. The chill was taken off by the fire being lit in the sitting room and we had all the space and comfort we could need. Our teenage daughter was impressed by the provision of wifi. Perfectly situated for visiting the town and tea plantations, I would highly recommend this property to anyone staying in the area.

Senani Bungalow was a welcome destination after 7 hours of driving/touring from Colombo. While it is a little out of the center, our driver was able to get excellent directions from the staff. As soon as we pulled up in our car, we were greeted with warm smiles and offers to help bring in our various pieces of luggage. After introductions we were quietly shepherded into the sitting room and served afternoon tea. That set the bar high for service and it only continued to get better. Our party of eight were meant to feel at home in this English style manor house. Our en-suite rooms were exactly as expected from the website and we easily settled into them to freshen up before dinner. The half-board option is definitely recommended as the food cooked up by the staff is excellent. After dinner, some of us decided to walk to the center of town and were pleasantly surprised that the 1.3km walk was a lovely stroll. We set off early in the morning for the hike to World's end knowing that we had just experienced a great piece of Sri Lankan hospitality. We would have liked to stay a whole week but at least our packed breakfasts served as a reminder for the remainder of the day. Enjoy your stay and get Wolfgang to tell you stories of his 20 years in Sri Lanka.

We are two friends from Serbia staying at this exceptional place for a few nights.Coming from the heat and high humidity from Colombo, we were surprised and thrilled to discover such a oasis of greenery and peace. The special climate of Nuwara Eliya, the warmth and the hospitality of the staff, delicious and healthy homemade food, made us extend our stay for another two days.We over enjoyed Prema´s famous Elavalu Soup, salads spiced with freshly plucked herns from the home garden.
We wish to come again and stay longer and will certainly recommend this exceptional place to our friends.

What an experience! Everything was fabulous. The staff especially Mark were overwhelmingly attentive to the minutest detail. They even provided hot water bottle packs for warming us in bed. We had invited our accompanyiing guests staying nearby bungalow for dinner and the staff put on a feast with such decor and sanctity it was out of this world and will be remebered by all of us for a long time. The cosy and comfortable as well as the freedom to be ourselves urges us to return there for a second holiday.
The host the wolfgang couple were charming visiting us to ascertain our requiremens and offering suggestions to make our stay exceptional.
I will recommend without any hesitation to anyone this place to suit their particular dietary requirements -

8 of us stayed there aged from 4 to 76, a mixed group of Chinese and australians. We all loved the place. The setting was elegant and in very good quality, the staff were supportive and friendly. The location is a little further than we expected from the town (not exactly walking distance), but we still very much enjoyed the experience. Wolfgang suggested us to take a walk to the waterfall which suited our group very well; It was also interesteing to chat to Marcus and learn more about the local's life and perspects. We were traveling with other friends and 15 of us all had a meal there and the food was beautiful, highly recommend to at least have one dinner there.

Senani bungalow was a great experience for me and my family. The service was fantastic and the staff were very attentive and accommodating. The rooms were ocmfortable and well appointed. The bathrooms attached to each bedroom were very nice also. The bungalow is located in a nice tranquil spot overlooking both scenery and parts of the town. For me, the service from the staff is what stood out most. I really felt at home and did not feel infringed upon by the hospitality given. I was even able to have some banter with Marcus(caretaker) over the live 20/20 cricket match between autralia and Sri Lanka at the time oof my stay. Very cool place. ***

We're just about to leave Sri Lanka, after two weeks of touring around, and my last thoughts are of my time at the Senani Bungalow. We had such a wonderful time, and I would highly recommend Senani to anyone staying in the Nuwara Eliya area. There were 9 of us staying and Marcus, Prema and the team, looked after us just as every other review has mentioned ... with care, kindness and without any reservations. We were even lucky enough to meet Wolfgang, and everyone was simply lovely. The accommodation was wonderful with comfortable beds and bathrooms in every room. The Tea was devine, breakfasts huge and dinner superb! We had grandparents, and small children with us and the accommodation and location was perfect for the whole spectrum. If you come to Nuwara Eliya, do yourself a favour and stay at Senani.

I stayed at Senani Bungalow with a group of 6 people in January and it was perfect!!! The house was immaculate and charming. I loved the little personal touches such as hot water bottles in the bed, home-made vegetable soup before dinner, a cosy fire in the living room and endless amounts of tea. Our host, Marcus was very hospitable and informative. The dinner (true Sri Lankan cuisine) was the best meal I ate in my two weeks in Sri Lanka. Thank you for such a wonderful experience in Nuwara Eliya.

Stayed at this property with my partner and friends for one night in early January and it was not enough!
This place is truly amazing. The décor is cute and quaint. The rooms and ensuite are large and comfortable. The wonderful host, Marcus, and the other staff (including the sweetest, mother-like figure of Prema, the cook) made this place so welcoming for us all.
We had a wonderful time there. It was cool enough to light a fire in the lounge so it felt very cosy and home-like.
Do take the full board on offer - Prema is a master chef. Her vegetable soup was one of the best things I tasted on this trip and having her teach me how to make aappas (hoppers) for breakfast was a highlight. Thank you!!! -

We arrived after a long windy trip in the car and were greeted by Marcus and Preema who were so warm and friendly. The house felt very colonial and authentic and true to the vibe of Nuwara Eliya. Preema is adorable and the most amazing cook in any homestay - still dreaming about her soup 3 months later. Bungalow is not walking distance to town centre though if you have a driver not a problem. Very comfortable living areas and picturesque garden looking out over the town. Even had the fire going and Preema had 'Hotties' (hot water bottles) for us to stay warm at night. Highly reccomend if you are looking to relax between long journeys. Kylie Renete, Bondi, Sydney australia

We had a really pleasant stay at Senani, which was quite a different experience to other bungalows we have stayed before. Prema made us excellent food and was very hospitable and talkative, making us feel at home all the time. Location wise it was easy to find. The weather kept fine for us right through thus we were able to enjoy the beautiful flowers in the garden. Seems like the owners are working on more improvements, so maybe we will have an even better place the next time. Christo,Melanie,Arianna, Kevin, Sandra, Danelle, Keiara, Kaelan, Maurice & Rita

We stayed at Senani Bungalows over Christmas 2012 with our extended family (a group of 8). Marcus and the rest of his team could not have been more helpful and welcoming. Throughout our stay the food was fantastic, the rooms spacious and comfortable and the water hot. The house is in a quiet part of town but an easy walk into the centre. All the staff went to a lot of trouble to make us feel at home, including having a Christmas tree and decorations throughout the house, treating us to a fireworks display, lighting a fire in the lounge room each night and providing hot water bottles and endless information about Sri Lankan history and other useful tips. It was a great place to spend Christmas away from home and we can't recommend it highly enough. The rates are very reasonable and the half board a must.

We stayed 2 nights and wished we could have stayed 2 weeks! Marcus, Prema and Namarathna go out of their way to make you welcome! The food is outstanding - the best coconut chutney, mango chutney, hoppers, sambal, brinjal (eggplant)... The list goes on and on! As for their generosity of spirit... We were even welcomed into the kitchen to learn some of Prema's cooking tips.
The rooms are beautiful and big and the garden spectacular - especially the veggie gardens! The fire place in the living room is perfect for the evening chill. Hot water bottles are a special treat too!
Only 15 mins down hill to the town centre. Highly recommended. Email tina at [--------] if you have any questions! -

A small bungalow in a nice quiet location not too far from town. The essence of the character of this building has been maintained, working fireplace and all. The bathrooms have been completely modernized. We were three couples, and we rented the whole house for two nights. The rooms are simple but clean.
Marcus was warm and welcoming, and introduced us to the history of the house. We were there on Thanksgiving day, and we were provided with a sumptuous roast chicken dinner. The breakfast was equally good - hoppers and string hoppers.
At night, Marcus lit a fire, and we sat around having good conversation and drinks around the warm fireplace in a comfortable living room. What more can we ask for!
Truly a nice and hospitable place to rest your head. -

Staying in this bungalow really felt like home. Marcus, the manager, is very welcoming and happy to share his knowledge about Sri Lanka and the history of this 130-year-old house. The food is extremely good and you can spend time in the kitchen learning how to prepare iall the dishes The rooms are kept in colonial style which makes the house so cosy and beautiful. This place is absolutely amazing!! It was well worth the money we spent for booking the whole place for ourselves. It was our honeymoon and we wished we could have stayed there longer. Its so romantic and the manager Marcus made sure that everything was perfect. Great hospitality and we were left to our privacy to enjoy the place. The food was delicious and the portions were more than enough for us. I would definitely recommend opting for the half board otherwise you will never leave this place. I would recommend this place to all couples who want to get away from the bane of the city and just enjoy the peace and quiet and the warmth this place has to offer. This place exceeded our expectations and we would definitely visit it again if possible. No hotel can compare with such an experience or atmosphere. We thank Marcus and his team for looking after us and for the great service provided.

It is a charming place with welcoming hosts and amazing cook who have managed to restore the design of this colonial house and kept a homy feeling. Having reached Nuwara Eliya from Colombo by Rajadhani Express and picked up by the friendly Marcos, who manages the property, we headed towards Senani Bungalow, in the van, under cloudy skies, which made the 5 o'clock look like 7 o'clock. The short distance took around 30 minutes to cover as the roads suited the surroundings and the colonial air that lingered in the area. The bungalow was a sight to with-hold; a lazy beauty sleeping at the foothills of various hills covered with vegetation and some classy British houses in between. After a warm welcome and warmer bath, we were introduced to the owners of the bungalow - Mr. and Mrs. Wolfgang, a lovely and lively couple, who belong to different parts of the European continent but have made Sri Lanka home since ages. They are actually based in Colombo and were on their occasional visit here. We decided to have a barbecue night with lots of fire around as it was chilly weather with a cool breeze - ideal for grilled meat and gallons of Vodka. We set out for the local market to procure the meat, coal etc which was an experience in itself as we captured various local vendors with their produce in our cameras. Back in the bungalow, we divided our chores. While DB set out to get different glimpses of the bungalow with Mr. Wolfgang, and Dusica got busy with marinating the meat and with her special pickles, myself and Sameet settled down in the garden, glasses and all. What followed was an amazing concoction of fun, laughter, good food and spirits. An evening to remember and a night to reminisce. The whole duration was peppered with Mr.Wolfgang's wit and Ms.Dusica's hospitality.
The bungalow is indeed colonial, neat, extremely well maintained and absolute value for money and the hosts treat you with warmth and friendliness, which money cannot buy. Overall an extremely recommendable place if you are planning for a trip around Nuwara Eliya. -

We arrived at Nuwara Eliya at around 3pm, having enjoyed the drive around the beautiful Lake Gregory, admiring the mountain scenery on the way. After a few directions we finally reached Senani, a charming green roofed Up-Country bungalow built during the British period. On arrival we were received with a warm welcome from the owners, Wolfgang and his charming wife Dusica. After being shown to our room we were invited into the sitting room for afternoon tea. During the winter season the late afternoons get a little chilly up in the hills, but this coolness was soon overcome once the log burning fireplace was lit, creating a lovely warm and cosy atmosphere. During our one night stay, there was one other couple with their two children staying. One of the attractions with a home-stay like this is that one can meet other travellers for a friendly chat and to compare travelling notes. The dining was club style in the central hall of the bungalow. The delicious food which included some vegetarian dishes were mainly prepared by Dusica using fresh vegetables and herbs from their very large garden, but generally traditional rice and curry is on the menu when the owners are not in attendance. The bedroom was comfortable and the up-to-date bathroom was to a good standard. After a good night's sleep, a hearty breakfast was served in the farmhouse style kitchen. We were now ready to make our way to Bandarawela, but before leaving, Dusica was keen to show us around the garden pointing out the various herbs, vegetables and flower beds which do particularly well in the cool Nuwara Eliya climate. We highly recommend this place for a homely stay in the Hills.

The surroundings are spectacular, and one can spend hours in the magnificent, carefully tended garden. It is a haven for anyone wishing to escape the hustle of city life even for a brief period. The view from the bungalow is spectacular. We enjoyed so much our stay at Senani bungalow. This is a great place to visit. Location is great. From the top of the hill, outside view was beautiful. The bungalow is surrounded by gardens of roses, herb plants, and blooming trees where you can sit and enjoy serene atmosphere.
The bungalow is so cosy and homely. One has a feeling of old colonial times because it is furnished with real antique furniture. It is spacious and shared living and dining areas are all very comfortable. In a living area there is a fireplace which kept us warm and cosy in the evening. The rooms are spacious and spotless. Modern Wifi is also there and free of charge for all the guests so you can still be connected to the world.
Staff was welcoming and took good care of us. The service was great. And food with the vegetables freshly picked from the garden, prepared by sweet Prema, was delicious.
Our teenage daughters also had great time. They went for horse riding and for cycling at lake Gregory.
There is only one bad thing about Senani: leaving it!
I would highly recommend Senani!

Our short stay felt like visiting long lost relatives or friends in their home. They really care about you! Prema's dinner in front of the roaring fire and long discussions with Wolfgang (the owner) and Marcus (the manager) made for a lovely change from the impersonal hotel experience. Good food & good conversation in warm surroundings are an unbeatable combination! Thanks for a memory that we will always treasure! My only regret is that they have not started the Sri Lankan cooking classes yet.

If you want to go and stay in a $250 per night hotel with carpets, musak and fluffy towels, that is valid, but especially with kids (as we have), small guest houses like Senani are much better for a 1-3 night stopover in Nuwara Eliya. The house is kept in the spirit of the colonial era, both in terms of decor and furniture, although there are concessions to modernity with TV/DVD and such like. The food is excellent. A lovely woman called Prema will feed you like kings. Basically, this place is run with love and is good value, would be a summary of our experience. If someone was going to Nuware Eliya for 2 nights, we'd recommend it. If you do go, spend an afternoon at Lake Gregory cycling and boating.

We very much enjoyed out stay at Senani earlier this year. The bungalow is well situated on the edge of town just a ten-minute walk or a short trishaw ride from the centre.
There are great views down the valley and along the hillside towards the waterfall at Lover's Leap (a 30-minute walk). The bungalow itself is spacious and tastefully furnished and the bedrooms and shared living and dining areas are all very comfortable.
We were very well looked after throughout our stay. The staff were welcoming and helpful and the food - including vegetables freshly picked from the garden - was delicious!

We have been there twice- once with our family and once with another family. The new remodel makes each bedroom independent and cozy; the common areas may be yours alone of yours to share with a few other guests. The bungalow is a short walk away from town and a tuc tuc ride away from horses, a visit to a small lake with a few trails and hikes abound in the area.
The kids love the garden area and outdoor area that surround the bungalow- it's like a small farm right on the edge of town.
The staff who work there are friendly and very accommodating and they'll help you learn some Sinhalese before you depart.
We took the train to the bungalow (it doesn't drop you in Nuwara Eliya, there's a stop just outside- we had a van pick us up) and all four kids loved the excursion. It actually took less time than our return van trip back to Colombo.
If you are looking for a classy, cozy, friendly and memorable stay in Nuwara Eliya, Senani bungalow is your place! -

As far as food was concerned, living outside the country for 40 yrs, since our taste buds like less spicy food, choices were very good. It was exciting to eat fresh veges from the garden. Location is good and is convienet even for foot traffic.

One thing to commend are the clean flooring and toilets. They are much more than I expected. The food is gourmet and tastes delicious. The staff is very hospitable and helpful (Marcus, Prema, Namarathna, and not to forget the dogs -Tina,lassy,lucky who kept us entertained). The fireplace kept us warm and cozy during the cold night with the fm. Oh and the wifi was a pleasant surprise.
This is a great place to visit and much better than any 5 star I've been in so far in Sri Lanka plus the weather is good. Mosquito free! You have to visit this place if you are in Sri Lanka!

Colombo, Sri LankaGreat experience
Left on 07/06/2012 for a stay in December 2011
Me and my wife Niranjela my sister Mane and our son anuhas had the chance to rent the bungalow for 2 nights 27th and 28th December.
It was a wonderful experience, since the staff is very attentife and careing for the guests. We felt "home away from home"
The srilankan food, which sweet Prema prepared with very delicious and plenty. If you stay here to long you might gain weight.
The 2 evenings we had by the fireplace made us feel very cosy and homely, like in the old colonial times. Since most of the furniture in the bungalow is really antique and fits to this 100 year old place.
But modern Wifi is also there and free of charge available for all guests.
Means you are still connected to the world.
we can highly recommend this place to our friends

Although, we arrived late, we had enough sunlight to fall in love with the property. We were like young kids discovering gardens, blooming trees, herb plants, etc... We had a wood fire at night and the best thing of it all was the hot water bag in the bedsheets. It kept us warm untill the next morning. The breakfast was really good. We have enjoyed everyting!!! We went back again in June and everyting was as great as expected!!!

ColomboA lovely house with friendly staff and easy environment for kids
Left on 06/15/2012 for a stay in April 2012
We stayed at Senani in april and thoroughly enjoyed our weekend! The staff were very helpful and the food was delicious!
We had our two kids and our nephew with us, so we were 5 adults and three children ages: 6,4 and 2 years old. We packed in our set of boule and enjoyed playing in the garden with the kids and it was great to be able to feed the kids before us and put them in bed while we had a nice Sri Lankan dinner with no worry about kids and babysitters. The log fire was a welcome retreat after dinner! Who knew we'd be cold in Sri Lanka?!
I would definitely recommend Senani for one or two families for a lovely break from the usual!

Bangkok ThailandDelightful bungalow in the heart of tea estate country, Nuwara E
Left on 06/13/2012 for a stay in April 2012
I can highly recommend this charming bungalow nestled in the hills of tea estate capital, Nuwara Eliya. I stayed here with my family and close friends (08 people in all) during the New Year season (Sinhala New Year april 2012). It was a perfect get away from the humid heat of Colombo.
This bungalow is a home away from home, the staff are brilliant, courteous, well-informed and pleasant. The cook, Prema, has been with the house her whole life and her sing-song voice is so sweet. She is an amazing cook. The manager, Marcus, truly cares about the bungalow, and is a great source of local news and sights. He tends the rose garden and vegetable plots and is happiest showing guests the different crops on the property. My boys were particularly taken by the cherry 'tomato trees' and of course rows and rows of strawberries!
I visited with my pre-teenage daughter and her two schoolfriends, and my twin boys who are under five. There are four rooms, ensuite, two with a double and single bed, plenty of space for us all. The main room has cable tv and a dvd, a fire, and comfortable sofas to relax and read from the library. It is a very quiet location, the rooms are cosy and homely, and there is always piping hot water. The girls were delighted there was wireless throughout the bungalow, and the boys loved running around and eating treats at the kitchen table.
Highlights include: delicious, home-made sri lankan feasts at breakfast and dinner, the best hoppers I have Ever eaten, brinjal salad, tasty sambol and of course, strawberries freshly picked from the garden, with lashings of cream.
I've stayed in several places in the hill country, and this is my favourite by far so far. It has been lovingly restored (3 years to recover and restore furniture, original pieces, and build well equipped and modern bathrooms).
Hope you have an incredible stay :)
